Minor Update On "Scott Thomas"

I'm trying to verify my source, which is tough, because he or she (I honestly don't know which) would like to remain anonymous. For what it's worth, I'm becoming convinced that he or she is exactly who he or she doesn't say her or she is.

What I mean is that this person seems in a position to know stuff. I'm trying to get that proof; once I do, I'll go with what I'm being fed.

There are two stories here. One is the one I called a "bombshell" earlier -- since there's chatter about it online, I don't think I'm giving anything away by simply linking what is already out there. This from Sean Gleeson, posting at discarded lies.

I've been picking up a lot of "chatter" on the Internets this afternoon along these lines. Somebody knows something, or at least somebody knows somebody who knows something. I betcha a nickel Scott Thomas is outed by the end of the day tomorrow, at the latest.

"Hints" are being dropped in a lot of places.

Ultimately, though, I don't know how important it is to know who "Scott Thomas" actually is. From what I gather, he is definitely in Baghdad and definitely a soldier, so the "who" only confirms that part of the story. (Which, of course, was already widely assumed to be true anyway.)

There is some question about the "how" of it, how he came to be TNR's one and only Man in Baghdad, but that too isn't huge. There is an angle there, to be sure, just not a huge one.

As I've talked to my source -- who isn't big on revealing the "who" anyway -- I've begun to think that maybe I shouldn't really be focused on that, but rather on what's going on inside TNR, which seems a more interesting avenue and also isn't just a one-day revelation. (Which my source isn't super-psyched about in the first place, again.)

Since beginning this post I've now gone up to "near certainty" on this source, which seems enough for TNR, so it's good enough for me. (Another blogger just vouched personally for the source.)

I'll see what I can and can't write and then hopefully will have some stuff. Not the bombshell of the who, probably; that might be broken by tomorrow morning by someone else. At this point it's just a race and I think just a matter of time.

Update: I've now been informed by a blogger he "knows" the name, and is thinking about writing up a post for tomorrow, after getting comment from TNR.

Not a sure thing he'll run with it. But he says he knows, he's been told. The source was more open with him than with me. I got the basics of "Scott Thomas'" identity, but he got the actual name.

Just Got Off Of Google Chat... with "Gracie." I'll post it tomorrow after cleaning it up and confirming one thing. (Like, her identity, which I have "near certainty" about but I'm going to go that extra mile that TNR doesn't bother with.)

I don't know the name of Scott Thomas and in fact asked almost nothing about that (I imagine it might already be broken before I'm even awake, so why bother?). So nothing on that score, but some stuff is kinda interesting.

1 I hope this somehow ties in with the plastic turkey.

2 You're taking too long Ace.  The people want to know, so I'll tell them.  Scott Thomas is really Harold Reid.

Posted by: Kevin at July 26, 2007 01:01 AM (1cRKV)

3 Which is difficult, because for some nutty reason his/her emails are not getting to my box. So it's this goofy three-corner affair now, with emails going through a third party.

Dude, your chops are so kill on so many levels (even if your taste in movies is questionable):  It's long past time you NERD UP on something as fundamental as e-mails.  This is not a problem anyone trying to do biz on the internet should have past more than the first e-mail.

Especially when your adoring fans are waiting with baited breaths and their pants around their ankles for your multi-data-pointed absolutely near certain bombshell revelations.

You're right about the inside baseball at TNR being possibly at least as interesting as Scott Thomas's ID - POSSIBLY.  It might depend upon how many and which details come with said ID - or how juicy the TNR stuff is.  .

4 The most interesting thing is your comment about the "hints" being dropped. After this is over, I hope that you explain this one and what your source has been leading you to.

5 As Sean says, there's a lot of "Chatter" on the internets.  This source isn't exclusive to me.  He/she is out there commenting.

He (we'll call him 'he") has probably told me and some other bloggers more than what's out there, but he isn't being very guarded about this.

As for the explaining:  I don't think the secret will hold more than a day.  I know how to find the name (even though I don't actually know it yet -- I just know "who" it is in the sense of, well, "who" this person is in relation to all the other players).

Further, I am definitely not the only one on this.  And if this person is putting this out on blogs, I have to imagine the MSM is getting wind of it too.

That's not such a big story, though, really.  The name will be random, one you never heard before, and won't matter all that much.   Even if I find it, I'm questioning whether I'll run it, as I don't know if I want to be the guy who got this other dipshit court-martialed.  We don't *know* he's lying yet, after all.

6 My money's on Jeff Gannon.

Posted by: quiggs at July 26, 2007 01:14 AM (TGXr3)

7 There are three reasons this isn't running yet:

1)  The source only knows it via hearsay.  It's a secret, but people are openly mentioning the "who" in the office.  But that's not direct knowledge the source has.

2)  The source won't go on record.

3)  There is I think only one source, not the necessary two.

Add those together and outing this guy's name is a dicey proposition.

Which is why I'm hoping to segue this more into a fly on the wall deal, which seems more interesting, and is less problematic running on one source's say-so.

wow, an actual soldier?  I would like to think that someone there would at least get things right.

What I learned from reading Jarhead is that even active duty folks are above taking a bunch of cliches and stuffing them into their memoirs.

But, this guy seemed to witness/take part in a lot of unsavory stuff.  Or he made up a bunch of stories to hurt his unit.  Either way, I doubt his stories on several levels, so it will be interesting to see this guy back them up.

9 Ace, I really wish I could give you more help on this, but I can't. I'm really hoping that Foer will come clean in the next issue, which goes to press on Friday and goes on sale Monday, 30 July. But if he doesn't come clean, then he really deserves some prodding from the outside.

So Ace, given what you've heard from your source, do the stories seem more likely or less likely to be true? And does it seem like TNR did the necessary fact-checking before hand or are they scrambling at the moment?

13 There's the source.  Not the real name, by the way.  I'm only mentioning this because I know it's a psuedonym and because he doesn't seem to be hiding it.

Did you see my email about what is fit/not fit to post?

Posted by: ace at July 26, 2007 01:46 AM (1UCRY)

14 >>>So Ace, given what you've heard from your source, do the stories seem more likely or less likely to be true?

Really most of the talk has been centered around trying to figure out if the source -- "Gracie" --  was legit.  Which he seems to be.

As far as the "who," it only slightly bears on this.  One can question, based on who this is and how he got the gig, if he was really the most qualified person to be given free reign to write without any fact checking at all.

>>>And does it seem like TNR did the necessary fact-checking before hand or are they scrambling at the moment?

They seem to have done no fact-checking before, because they "trusted" this guy.  They're doing some now.

Only the thing about "trusting" him comes from the source.  The rest of this is just what is already known-- obviously they did no fact-checking before or they wouldn't have to be doing it now.

15 Hell of a note when we have to have secret sources to get the truth out of the freaking media.  And we all thought the cosa nostra were secretive.

Posted by: corvan at July 26, 2007 01:51 AM (16gju)

16 And of course Foer isn't going to come clean in the next issue, Gracie.  Sheesh!

Please accept my gmail invitation so I can google-chat you questions -- not about the name, I'll leave that for others.  But about general impressions, the mood of the office, the politics (Peretz tearing Foer a new ass?  Office dividing up for and against Foer? etc.?)

This email dealio isn't working.

Posted by: ace at July 26, 2007 01:53 AM (1UCRY)

17 If anyone missed it, "Gracie Bomme" above is the psuedonym of the source.  So, if you want, you can try directing questions his way.

I wouldn't bother with the "who" stuff because he doesn't seem to want to reveal that, not explicitly, at least, and besides, it's not going to be a secret much longer.  So it's a waste of time two different ways.

Posted by: ace at July 26, 2007 01:56 AM (1UCRY)

18 I can answer that.  Yes, I did.  You can be absolutely near certain of that.  I won't reveal it, however, except to Scott. who'll be back from his 21-hour mission shortly.  It was going to be a 20-hour mission, but they were going to stop for some Bradley basketball.  That's where they teams of BFV's bounce live dogs through hoops made of Iraqi children's rib-cages, with burn victim cheerleaders in tan uniforms.  I should shortly be able to reveal when the youtube is going up.

19 Oh well- since this seems to be Ace's back-channel, I'll stop having fun here, and won't even explain what I meant - I do actually appreciate this live give and take.  It's fun to watch it develop.  Early on, in an e-mail to Goldfarb, I suggested that he find someone who knew the state of discussion at TNR.  He was more interested in Glocks, but that's no criticism.  So far, Goldfarb's the hero of this piece.

27 Something tells me that if a group of TNR reporters and editors went to lunch in DC  and someone with AIDS sat at the table behind them and one of the TNR folks started making fun and jokes about the person with AIDS, the staff wouldn't feel the need to keep that persons identity secret. Why is the disfigured women treated differently by TNR?   Would TNR still keep his identitty secret if he had admitting to following her back to her barracks and raping her?  Just how far does TNR let their writers go with abusing people to make good war stories?   Sexual harrassment, public embarrasment, disgusting jokes addreessed to the women is OK by TNR, but rape wouldn't be OK?

The Plank (http://www.tnr.com/blog/theplank) has a statement from Private Scott Thomas Beauchamp admitting he is the diarist, and not much else:

I am Private Scott Thomas Beauchamp, a member of Alpha Company, 1/18 Infantry, Second Brigade Combat Team, First Infantry Division.

He also says this:

That being said, my character, my experiences, and those of my comrades in arms have been called into question, and I believe that it is important to stand by my writing under my real name.

Gee Scott, it seems to me that YOU were the one calling the character of your comrades into question.

Du bist Meine Mutti? Into the Corpse, Away From the Tribe

I walked away from my tribe
and into my corpse
the architecture of myself was whispering
"Wash ventricles up on the bank of the Main
Send the heads of irises down the Danube
wash my hands in the Rhine"
A place where you can sleep away
seperate from the tribe
and re-read hatemail from your mother.

I walked away from my tribe
and into the corpse
into myself with a distended smile...

I watched her walk away with me
when we threw sunsets at each others eyes
you made this
and I made that for you
this world is possible
and the voices of hunters
chasing the squeal of small animals
disappear with our new problems
to kiss the enemy on the skyline.

We walked away from our tribe
into the corpse
into ourselves
with upended smiles...

54 Most of the people criticizing Private Beauchamp are actually defending the integrity and reputation of soldier.  Many of them, including me, served and raelize that since Beauchamp has been the army at least for a year and a half, he must have been reduced in rank at some point.

Most of his claims are completely impossible, such as a Bradley driver eatching dogs get caught in the vehicle's track (just can't see the track while you dfive).  Etc.  This guy never reported the atrocities he claimed up the chain of command because they never happened.  Looking athis myspace and his pal's myspace, his unit is very unprofessional, handling weapons like gangters, etc.  The commander of his unit needs to be relieved for that alone.

Leading soldiers is tough work.  If you are to nice to your unit, then the jackasses like this guy will do really stupid things.  You have to keep a tight leash because so many Privates simply haven't matured yet.  People come into the army because they need the guidance, but one commanding officer didn't straighten this guy out.  Obviously someone tried to at one point, which is why he was demoted.

At least many of his claims are not possible.  One more claim on his myspace about Iraq was made while he was in Germany, so he has a penchant for lies.
I can't help but think back to that NYT article about soldiers raping eachother that was later proven to be fiction.  How many soldiers are dying today because out press keeps making shit up in Al Qaeda's PR war?  Remember that free speech is coming a high price that people are paying in blood as we speak.

This Private is killing his friends so he can get some fame and fortune.

Uh, no, it's not, even though that's what Franklin Foer and, apparently, you, would would like it to be.  Rather, the main question is, and always has been, whether or not the events "Scott Thomas" describes in the articles he wrote for TNR actually happened as he described them, or is he just making stuff up?  His actual identity is a secondary question.

So far no one at TNR has offered corroboration for any of the content of the Scott Thomas articles, nothing, zip, nada, zilch.  And if the hints ace has been dropping are correct, it looks like Foer is doing his fact-checking after publishing the articles, rather than before, as is customary.

You got nuthin'.

Here's what Ace wrote earlier:

http://ace.mu.nu/archives/234789.php

That goalpost-moving means you, scarshapedstar.  You're so predictably dishonest.

Posted by: sandy burger at July 26, 2007 11:21 AM (8HJYT)

59 Please note that TNR's only defense up to this point has been:

a) we're nearly certain "Scott Thomas" is an actual soldier serving in Iraq

and

b) we have seen nothing to indicate his articles aren't true.

This is pretty thin.  I'm mean, we're talking "Rathergate" thin here.

60 Who the hell is Foer?

Franklin Foer is an editor at the New Republic magazine. I don't know how high-ranking within that organizationhe is. From what has been indicated, he was responsible for publishing the articles by Scott Thomas.  So if this all blows up in their faces, Foer will have some serious 'splaining to do to TNR owner Martin Peretz.

Laugh now, pal.  Now that this guy outed himself, he's going to have a very bad day, followed by a few bad weeks.  Now that they know who he is, it makes his stories that much easier to refute.

The question was never about whether he existed or not, but whether he was telling the truth.  Very soon, we'll know and I don't think it's going to go well for Beauchamp or TNR.

Speaking of "career assassination" Mr. Thomas said this:

I think she’s f*****g hot!” I blurted out.

“What?” said my friend, half-smiling.

“Yeah man,” I continued. “I love chicks that have been intimate—with IEDs. It really turns me on—melted skin, missing limbs, plastic noses . . . .”

“You’re crazy, man!” my friend said, doubling over with laughter. I took it as my cue to continue.

“In fact, I was thinking of getting some girls together and doing a photo shoot. Maybe for a calendar? ‘IED Babes.’ We could have them pose in thongs and bikinis on top of the hoods of their blown-up vehicles.”

My friend was practically falling out of his chair laughing. The disfigured woman slammed her cup down and ran out of the chow hall, her half-finished tray of food nearly falling to the ground.

If I was in Beauchamp's squad, I know what the rest of the platoon and I are doing tonight.

Towel?     CHECK!

Bar of soap?      CHECK!

JD Johannes over at Outside The Wire had Beauchamp pegged right down to his company commander.  He correctly guessed his exact unit.  He also says that he'll be back at FOB Falcon in a few weeks.  Hehe...what I wouldn't give to see what happens.

67 After reading the fey little douchebag's myspace postings (via Malkin) the only words that come to mind are... Fey Little Douchebag.

Maybe he'll get a job as a military advisor on John Edward's campaign.

Since liberals are very fond of made up stories, I'd like to report that Scott Thomas Beauchamp raped my cat.

Where's my bookdeal?

EC,

I am quite ignorant on this matter, but what exactly will his platoon do with the towel and soap?

75 [from imdb.com. warning: contains Caine Mutiny spoilers]

Lt. Barney Greenwald: I wanna drink a toast to you, Mr. Keefer. From the beginning you hated the Navy. And then you thought up this whole idea and you managed to keep your skirts nice and starched and clean, even in the court martial. Steve Maryk will always be remembered as a mutineer. But you, you'll publish your novel, you'll make a million bucks, you'll marry a big movie star, and for the rest of your life you'll live with your conscience, if you have any. Here's to the real author of the Caine mutiny. Here's to you, Mr. Keefer.

77 Wait, I thought this was a mad frenzy to prove Scott didn't exist.

It's always cute when leftists try and think. They never quite get it right but that doesn't stop them from pontificating like preening schmoes.

Anyone else wish they were are fly on the wall when Private Dickhead had to answer to his chain of command today about these 'incidents' and if he can't offer any evidence to support them (and he won't be able to) why he thought is was okay to smear his fellow soldiers and by implication them?  Yeah, that must have been fun.

Ok, it's officially after 12 noon on the east coast where Ace (I think?) lives.  He's usually good about updating his blog in the early afternoon.

Where are you, Ace?  What's the scoop you have about "Gracie" and Pvt Audie Murphy?

Note that he even looks a little like Jake Gyllenhal

Note that he does seem to have a small coterie of army buddies - probably possuers like him (I think they're smarter than everyone else in the unit).

Does the military have the authority to get rid of him? Nothing "permanent" -- he just doesn't really belong in the armed forces. He's a detriment to the mission.

At the very least he's going to be a very uncomfortable guy, now that he's outed himself. He's got a lot of 'splainin' to do.

(Also, you're right about the huge gaydar cross section.)

I just realized something......

Isn't Beauchamp the kind of soldier that the lefties usually attack and smear as representative of the entire US military in general?  A heartless douchebag that enjoys making wounded people suffer, etc.

Well then, why are they rushing to his defence?  Beauchamp is the typical army soldier "just following orders" right?  Could it be that he has a highly nuanced thinking that makes him suddenly a hero in their eyes?

The crochet boots online retailer also knows bargain-hungry shoppers are scouring the Web for discounts, and its UGG Classic Crochet rivals are more than happy to provide them. So it is putting coupon codes on ugg classic crochet that customers can use to save money on its site.
