TB Passenger Allowed On Plane By Inspector, Who Waived The No-Fly Warning As "Discretionary"

RCL compares and contrasts:

A globe-trotting Atlanta lawyer with a dangerous strain of tuberculosis was allowed back into the U.S. by a border inspector who disregarded a computer warning to stop him and don protective gear, officials said Thursday. The inspector has been removed from border duty.

The unidentified inspector explained that he was no doctor but that the infected man seemed perfectly healthy and that he thought the warning was merely "discretionary," officials briefed on the case told The Associated Press. They spoke on condition of anonymity because the matter is still under investigation.

Republican presidential candidate John McCain on Wednesday defended the immigration legislation winding its way through Congress, saying the measure is needed to protect the country from terrorism.

"People who grew up in London, people who have spent most of their lives in the United States, have somehow become induced to be terrorists and that argues strongly for accounting for and bringing under control a situation where 12 million people are in our country illegally," the Arizona senator said during one of several conference calls with reporters from early voting states where he is vying for support.

Plainly our customs and immigration officials are on the ball when it comes to this sort of thing. I mean, just imagine if this guy had tried to enter the country with an exotic, infectious, and deadly strain of a disease.

Oh wait, that's what did happen.

I guess I have to note the obvious. Readers are emailing me pictures. I suppose when stopped by customs, the fact that his wife looked like this...

image002.jpg

... may have swayed customs inspectors. Although I'm not sure it's a good idea for our national security apparatus to have an I'd-hit-that exception to the no-fly list.

Walt Disney must have seriously warped me as a child, because I'm sitting here looking at that duck-bill thinking, Hot.

That's from this ABCNews article in which TB Guy defends putting large numbers of people at risk.

Selfish bastard knew he was sick, landed in Canada and crossed the border by car to avoid being yanked aside and quarantined.  Put hundreds at risk.

I don't know what you could charge him with, criminally, but whatever it is, it ought to happen.

"Please forgive me".  Fuck you, asshole.

7 Oh, screw Daisy Duck! I just heard her crying on the radio that she begged the government to sent a military or maritime ship to bring them home and they wouldn't. You should have hired a private jet and paid for it your self. I hope the government and people exposed to your husband sue you to recoup their losts.

8 Selfish bastard knew he was sick, landed in Canada and crossed the border by car to avoid being yanked aside and quarantined.

Oh, you reminded me:  Didn't he refuse to go to a hospital in Italy because he was didn't want to be quarantined in Italy?

9 He's a lawyer?  That figures.  I'm interested in knowing if he supports Kerry, Kennedy and Carter.  That would explain his attitude towards the rest of the world.

10 Wasn't the problem with the plane ride that others would be breathing the same air?  So why didn't he just take a cruise home?  Evidently this illness wasn't so time sensitive that he needed to skip his vacation; would another week or two matter?

13 Evidently this illness wasn't so time sensitive that he needed to skip his vacation; would another week or two matter?

My guess is that he was worried that the longer it took to get back to the US, the greater the likelihood he would be detained and quarantined out of the country. Again, it is all about what he wants and everyone else be damned.

16 In a hospital under armed guard according to the radio (BBC on XM).  From what I heard yesterday this guy was contacted while on vacation and urged to check into a hospital and refused so the Europeans issued an arrest warrant and thats when he hopped on the plane home.

Posted by: chad at June 01, 2007 10:45 AM (WNcvq)

17 So why didn't he just take a cruise home?

That sounds like a great idea -- I've never heard of massive outbreaks of disease from a week or two in the tightly confined space of a cruise ship.

I have no idea if TB would spread that way, but I'd also rather not find out.

It would be a damn shame if that duck's tits got sick.

I hate to break it to you, but we are just about to give 20 million folks with God knows what disease legal status.  That will make this dink liberal personal injury lawyer with daddy's connections look like a drop in the third world bucket that America is becoming.

Not to be dramatic and doomsday, but it is too late.  We have changed the culture, and the dream that America used to be will be longer.

Then again, those tits were pretty nice.

I think it would be hilarious if his wife has big buck teeth behind that mask.

Also, here is a question. Let's say he did infect those closest to him. It is my understanding that the passengers closest were notified and they went to the Doctor to be tested. Doesn't that possibly infect the people at the Doctors's offices?????

23 Folks,
1. The guy is a DIVORCE lawyer. Google him.
2. The CDC sent a representative to Italy, who told the guy not to fly home. They guy then asked that the CDC send it's jet (yes, the CDC has a jet dedicated to carrying folks who need to be quarantined) and the CDC refused. This despite the fact that the father of Ms Duck Bill works for the FREAKIN' CDC as a TB researcher.
3. Blame the guy if you like (I do), but what was he supposed to do? Die in FREAKIN' Italy?
4. This entire thing, including the CDC and the nimrod border agent who disregarded the guy's passport warning is a devastating condemnation of the CDC, the Border Patrol and every other aspect of Homeland (in)Security.
5. Eyes on the prize, folks. If the government can't deal with a shlep with an infectious disease, how are they going to deal with a guy with a suitcase nuke?

31 Look, tb is not that infectious. The problem with the new strains, is that they are treatment resistant.  So, if you are one of the few to be exposed and get sick, you're fucked.  And why do we have treatment resistant strains of tb? Because assholes would not take the antibiotics they were given for the entire time they  needed to do so. It use to be if you had tb you were given your meds and became non-infectious within days. You were required to take the meds for 6 months and not drink (meds + alcohol tough on the liver), and then you were cured. But that is too much to ask of asshats. Modern science has discovered all these life saving treatments and they get ignored.

As has been mentioned (somewhere, but not enough), we are seeing a resurgence in diseases we nearly eradicated in this country, and they are making a comeback.  Only our guard is down and our susceptibility is up.

After working with the Fulton County District Attorneys Office and the Oconee County District Attorneys office, he chose to go into private practice so that he could represent injured people in personal injury cases. He concentrates his practice in personal injury litigation and family law.

47 What I want to know is: How'd he get it?  My understanding is that most people who get drug-resistant TB are drug addicts who often get infections and then can't/won't follow through on their course of anti-biotics, thereby allowing the germs to develop immunity.

I've also heard that there are some strains lurking in hospitals that are immune to almost all anti-biotics.

So what gives?  Is he a junkie?  Did he contract this in a hospital? (and if so, which hospital and how?)  Was it from some kind of new gay sex fad?

If the fact he has it is now a matter about which the public has a right to know, then surely how he got it is at least as important.

Enquiring mysophobes want to know.

48

Part of his explanation/apology roadshow yesterday was that when told in January he had TB, he was 1) asymptomatic, and 2) assured by his doctors that he wasn't contagious or a risk.

Really?

If you're asymptomatic, why get tested for TB, unless you've been knowingly exposed to it (like the passengers on his flight are being tested now)?

I suppose we should thank him that he has stirred up such public concern over a problem that has been brewing for years.
