Ron Paul's Former Aide Announces Intent To Challenge Him In Next Election

...on Red State.

I have spent the early morning scanning the major political blogs, and news sites. It's unanimous. Ron Paul got slammed by Rudy Giuliani last night for suggesting that we - the United States of America - are to blame for the attacks on 9/11. He even had the audacity to cite Osama bin Laden.

While everyone is hailing this as a "Great moment" for Rudy Giuliani, I think just as importantly, it was a horrible moment for Ron Paul. My former boss looked like a complete nutcase. He looked frail. His hands shaked. He showed his age. He was completely unprepared for Giuliani's romping response.

He's calling on three or four other Republicans to challenge Paul but, in absence of such a challenge, he'll run.

Ron Paul's Biggest Fans: ...seem to be our own rho, Andrew Sullivan (who writes that only two candidates are acceptable to him, McCain and Ron Paul, and then (scroll up) dedicates his entire day to defending/boosting Paul), and of course the very-reasonable, very-conservative "Alternate News Sources:"

Fox News Rigs Entire Debate To Savagely Attack Ron Paul

Posted on May 16th, 2007 (3 hours ago) by blogger

Texas Congressman targeted by Giuliani, Hannity & Colmes as pre-screened audience applause torture and warmongering, Fox limits post-election polls to three hours and no Internet voting yet Paul still successful.

In a sickening display of cronyism and as a consequence of the sheer terror elicited amongst the establishment after his previous success, Fox News rigged last night’s entire presidential debate in a crass effort to smear Ron Paul - yet the Texas Congressman still beat Rudy Giuliani in Fox’s own poll.

If you thought the MSNBC debate was somewhat unfair towards Ron Paul, then this was an absolute debacle.

The audience for the debate was clearly pre-screened and pre-selected to include only mainly geriatric 75 year old plus Fox News viewers who are scared of their own shadow. How else can the bizarre applause for warmongering and torture, which polls show are both clearly opposed by the majority of American people, be explained?

...

Are these audience members robots or did Fox News dub the audio to include the applause?

Giuliani clearly endorses torture and the mindless drones in attendance rapaciously lap it up!

Ron Paul seems to excite the excitable. Count the exclamation points in that bit -- must have been a fire sale on 'em.

More Debate Round-Up: From Hugh Hewitt and Dean Barnett.

Hewitt criticizes the Fox panel for not allow the candidates to debate Ron Paul's absurd claims about the motivations of Al Qaeda. I'm of two minds on that. The FoxNews team did a good job of pushing hard questions on the candidates and provoking them to separate from each other on the issues, not merely pledge devotion to the spirit of Ronald Regan. (Chris Matthews and the Politico's guy couldn't do this, as they are so dyed-in-the-wool liberal they have no idea what to ask a conservative, the same way they have no idea of what would be an intelligent question to ask of a monitor lizard.) If the Fox team had permitted that particular debate to go on, the responses from nine of the candidates would have been predictable and similar (and correct, of course, but nine guys merely stating the obvious in different ways doesn't really allow voters to differentiate between them).

On the other hand, some times the obvious needs to be said, and small differences to make an, um, difference. Plus it really wasn't entirely fair to let Rudy Giuliani, and only Rudy Giuliani, take a big swing as this high hanging curveball that never curved.

Then again, the candidates were more than willing to avoid the questions posed to them and answer questions they wished they'd been asked, or revisit questions posed to someone else that they'd like a crack at. So everyone on stage could have, if they wished, taken the time to ask Ron Paul if he believed the bombing of Iraq was the cause of the 1993 World Trade Center bombing, or if the Khobar Towers bombing, etc.

On the third Beebroxian hand, allowing that to go on would have elevated the crank crackpot simpleton Ron Paul more, and given him additional time to expound on the philosophies of 40s and 50s legislator Robert Taft, and basically diverted the debate away from those who deserve to be on stage and are qualified to be President to a doctrinaire fool who doesn't and isn't.

Subcontracting Our Foreign Policy To Al Qaeda: In a long, thoughtful, well-cited rebuttal, Allah notes that Ron Paul's foreign policy basically boils down to submitting our goals to an Al Qaeda review board and acceding to their veto.

Which is strange in and of itself-- after all, Ron Paul insists, along with every other left-wing ninny, that Osama bin Ladin wants us in Iraq. If Al Qaeda wants us in Iraq, why are they always propagandizing for us to depart? Shouldn't they be trying to keep us there, since they want us there and all?

And also, if our foreign policy is, as Ron Paul asserts, exactly what al Qaeda wants, what sense does it make to, as he suggests, craft a foreign policy more amenable to Al Qaeda, less likely to anger them?

His fundamental starting premise is that we already have just about the optimum foreign policy from Al Qaeda's perspective; what additional measures is he thinking of when he calls for us to try to please Al Qaeda more in our foreign policy decisionmaking?

Before the latest edition of Ron Paul bashing commences, I have to say that I can't help but thinkthat we should be spending our energy elsewhere. Is he worth all of this attention? What's the point?

With that said, have at it, morons, and have fun.

2 In some ways, Bart, it's part of the function of the primary process. With any luck, the piling on of criticism will hasten his departure from the field, lending increased credibility to the remaining GOP'ers who no longer have to share a stage as a "pretend equal" to a loon.

It's sort of like a counter to the Rontards spamming online polls to give their guy the appearance of support.

Plus, it's just so much fun.

3 It's absolutely worth the energy, lest we on the Right end up with our own bunch of Truther morons to deal with. Imagine how much more rational our political discourse (at least on foreign policy) would be had the Dems had the will to smack down Trutherism in its infancy.

12 I ran a little test at my blog last week - I was curious about the way they seemed to be trying to dominate the Internet dialog on the Republican candidates. So I wrote a post that was mildly derogatory toward Ron Paul and waited to see how long it would take for his followers to find it and comment. Less than 10 minutes for the first hit and comment. No more of his guys commented after that, but I got 9 more hits through the day (a large number for my teensy blog). All were through Technorati.

I imagine that today they're pretty busy with damage control, so it'll take them a while to cover the blogosphere today. But I'll bet they're trying.

16 I wish Rudy would have responded to Paul more substantively.  A lot of viewers were probably left with the impression that Ron Paul was "on to something" because Rudy's response came across as an emotional, rather than logical, one... sort of a Rudy "doth protest too much" type thing.  He should have pointed out the myriad other countries that were targeted by AQ, and cited the words of bin Laden, et al.

I don't know why everyone thought Rudy scored so big on that.

Ron "Truther" Paul fanatics are complaining of a conspiracy to keep him down?  Imagine that.

The irony is that they engage in their own little conspiracy to spam polls, then cite those same polls to claim he "won" when he did even worse than lose the debate- he committed political suicide.  He's what- 1% in legitimate polls?

1. Don't you think if Ron Paul is ignred, the faster he'll disappear? It takes two (or more) for a dialogue, you know.

2. These Paul "supporters" are confederates. They are phonies with the sole purpose to instill division and strife among the Conservatives. And their ploy seems to be working.

You guys seem to be less willing than I am to believe how extensive and how determined these Progressives to put a Dem in the White House. They are pulling out all the stops, throwing everything at you, and taking advantage of every single opportunity no matter how small.

The latest opportunity is Ron Paul. They noticed your reaction and they are seizing on it. They put the hookin the water and you guys bit the bait. I'll chalk this up as another distraction by our political enemies. Seriously, none of you feel the strings on your back being pulled?

I know the election is far away, but when are we going to go on the offensive against the Democrats? There's no time like the present to get the infamous Republican Attack Machine© running, I say, (as toothless as it is).

21 DaveS,

Do you really think among normal, thinking human beings Ron Paul came out the winner in that exchange?  Rudy's clip is everywhere today.  Sure the die hard nut jobs think Paul did just fine (or are trying to spin his words to something not noxious to most Americans) but no mainstream Republican thinks that.

You can't go through that BS step by step in 30 seconds and quite frankly, it wasn't worth a thoughtful response. Paul was so far outside the Republican mainstream that he should have been dismissed as the crank and nut job he is.

Posted by: Drew at May 16, 2007 03:40 PM (gNyUT)

Don't you think if Ron Paul is ignred, the faster he'll disappear?

I wish you were right but if you had told me at the end of 2001 how wide spread this truther crap is, I would have thought you were nuts.  By dismissing them as cranks and not shouting them down and writing them out of the national debate it has only grown.

Sure, there's a danger of giving a fuck like Paul a bigger stage than he deserves but I think ultimately he needs to be taken down and written out of the party and conservative movement.

Leave the whack jobs to Democrats.

I've just finished Ayaan Hirsi Ali's book where she lays out exactly what caused 9/11, and what's wrong with the Muslim world.

What Ron Paul said is downright evil, considering that appeasing the terrorists will lead to a few more decades of oppression of women and genocide of religious/ethnic minorities.

Although I'm for smaller government, Hirsi Ali's book makes a good case that we have a moral obligation not to put up with Islam's bullshit any more.

Drew, I think it's a mistake to lump Ron Paul in with the Truthers. Not for Paul's sake, but because it helps the Truthers get more attention.

Ron Paul has a misguided opinion as to the "why's" about 9/11, but he knows that Al Qaeda and bin Laden hijacked the airplanes and flew them into the WTC and the Pentagon. That's the distinction that is missing from the Truthers and it's an important distinction that seperates Paul from them.

Now they can ride into the national debates and the national stage on the coattails of Ron Paul. How did that happen? It happened when everyone started acknowledging Ron Paul as a Truther.

Look, I'm not trying to defend Ron Paul. I'm trying to show everyone that were heading down the wrong road. If this is our strategy to pick a great candidate for the White House, frankly, it sucks. This distraction in no way benefits us.

I don't think Paul is a full on truther (though he flirts with them and not in a ghey way). I was using the growing acceptance of truther BS in normal discourse. Paul's 'they did it because of what we did' is more dangerous than truther shit. We need to be honest about the enemy we deal with and Paul offers a false cure...come home and stay out of the world's business.

That's what needs to be confronted.

Posted by: Drew at May 16, 2007 04:20 PM (gNyUT)

32 I didn't watch the debate, but the questions, according to some accounts, were less than evenhanded. The big candidates got better and more questions than the little, lesser known ones, which seems a bit unnecessary and pointlessly slanted - like giving Michael Jordan friendly calls by the refs, as if he needed the advantage.

What I can't understand is the odd notion that because Ron Paul is so obviously crazy that he has to be removed from the debates. Surely if you let his crazy shine it will only help the other candidates. Witness Rudy--without his Ron Paul moment he's widely regarded as having a middling performance.

No, best to chase him off. Great Conservative Index numbers; principled small-government advocate; not a fan of inconsistent and often contrary foreign policy. Clearly he's a nut.

In any event, Ron Paul is a simpleminded crank who is harmful to the party through his endorsement of ludicrous left-wing talking points on foreign policy.  It's harder to say that Republicans have a difference with, and advantage over, Democrats on foreign policy when this douchebag is out there trumpeting the Reid/Murtha/Pelosi/Moore/O'Donnell/Sheehan line.

40 Leftists like Paul purely because he's anti-war. Just like righties like Lieberman because he's pro-war. It's not that complicated to understand.

Regarding the assertion that Ron Paul wants to cede our foreign policy to bin Laden, it takes a pernicious and disingenuous interpretation to come to that conclusion. Paul is on the record as opposing ceding our national interests to the UN--so you think he intends to let Al Queda set the agenda?

Nonsense. Jonah Goldberg's interpretation was particularly offensive, since he suggests that Paul quoting bin Laden is ceding foreign policy, but when McCain does so, it goes unremarked:
After we lost the war in Vietnam, we came home, they didn't follow us home. You read Zarqawi, you read bin Laden, you read al Qaeda, they'll tell you they want to follow us home.

I've asked this question before: are you prepared to claim that our wishy-washy, inconsistent, and unfocussed foreign policy over the past several decades have no bearing on how America is viewed by terrorists? 'Cause that's an odd argument to make.

Of course it does. And of course Islamofascist ideology also is a factor. The question becomes, are we going to be safer or not if we continue an aggressive, interventionist foreign policy? It's not crazy to suggest we aren't. Iran is even now getting close to a bomb. So do we invade Iran? Are we going to fight a three-front war? Are we really?

41 I rarely ever get over to Sullivan's blog anymore, so does anyone know why his choices are McCain or Ron Paul?  McCain has gone over to the religious right on gay issues which makes Sullivan supporting him quite surprising.  For that matter, why doesn't he like Giuliani?  He's more moderate on social issues but promises to appoint conservative judges and seems to be tough on defense.  In the absence of Fred Thompson getting in the race, Giuliani seems to be the best choice to me.

43 It's torture and gay marriage.  McCain may be anti gay-marriage on paper, but does anyone really believe him?  I'm sure Sullivan doesn't.

I agree with Kensington -- he's going for the most leftward, anti-Republican Republican candidates because they share his belief that Republicans basically suck and that "true conservatives" are social, fiscal, and foreign-policy liberals.

(Yes, fiscal liberals too -- Sullivan's always railing about Bush's spending, but when he bothers to comment on domestic spending programs, he seems to favor an awful lot of them -- expensive ones, too, brand new big spanking new entitlement programs and social spending.)

59 Ron Paul's Biggest Fans: ...

My pet turtle is big on Ron Paul...but then again he's just a fucking turtle.  What do they know?

Bart does like to preen.

Also, prance.

He's a little dandy that one.

61 I'm just here for the decrepit D&D and Monty Python references. Oh, and the lies. I love the lies and falsehoods. And the references to Filipino whores.

And the 2,037th reference to Val-U-Rite vodka. Can I get one of those? I never tire of them.

Posted by: rho at May 16, 2007 10:23 PM (8eBMH)

62 rho,
I'm sad that you have no life and choose to infest a website where nobody really likes you.

Posted by: Pity de Blog at May 16, 2007 11:19 PM (wTSkN)

63 Odd, why do you even come here if its so painful, not entertaining, and so beneath your vastly sophisticated comedic standards?

Posted by: Christopher Taylor at May 16, 2007 11:28 PM (wmgz8)

64 And the references to Filipino whores.

That's Thai tranny whores to you, buddy.

1. Don't you think if Ron Paul is ignred, the faster he'll disappear? It takes two (or more) for a dialogue, you know.

Wow.  He was invited to a nationally televised debate by Fox and treated as a "legit" candidate.  I would say that prohibits the use of the "ignore him" strategy, don't you ?

Good lord I am amazed at how obtuse people can be.

66 Are you people crazy? got to www.gwu.gov a very reputable school and type in cia afghanistan and lesson in the search que. Declassified government documents linked to there, prove that the C.I.A. and parts of the D.O.D. had very clear and disturbing invlovments in Afghanistan in the late 70's and early 80's. Every single one of you are so convinced by everything FOX says that you allow the spin doctors to distract you from the fact that certain parts of our government made secret decisions that caused the founders of the Taliban to hate us. I am a republican voting for Romney in the election but i still know for a Absolute fact that blowback caused, at the very least, the attacks of 9/11.
