Hysterical: Dana Carvey On Dennis Miller's Show

Dana Carvey is just about the funniest guy in the world. That HBO comedy special (Critics' Choice, I think) is flat-out hilarious, featuring, at the end, Carvey's impression of Burt Lancaster sodomizing Kirk Douglas. (Also, Johnny Carson and Jimmy Stewart having sex.)

He's on fire here as he impersonates George Bush and George W. Bush as they realize Rosie O'Donnell has seen through their schemes. (The opening is marred by a bad connection, but it gets better.)

BTW: Given that Carvey is a comic from San Fransisco, he's strangely... I don't want to say conservative. Let's say oddly centrist. But that could just be his own admitted need for adoration restraining him from offending any possible adorers.

His show was supposedly hysterical, but it didn't seem to attract an audience. Apparently Steven Colbert and Steve Carrell were both on it before being swiped by the Daily Show.

2 I think I know what you mean. He sometimes gets into this cutesy mode that features a lot of repetition.

But man does he make me laugh when he's on, which he usually is.

5 I still maintain that Carvey's impersonation of H. Bush was the greatest thing to ever come out of that presidency.
Nawt....gunna.....doit.
Scary! Scary!

6 i've just seen him tank a few times on late night talk shows. i get the impression occassionally that he has no idea what will make the audience laugh. but agreed, once he finds the pulse of his audience he makes it work.

7 Dana Carvey is just about the funniest guy in the world.

Really? I never thought he was funny. He can do a decent impression, but he then beats the concept to death and never really says anything all the humorous. It's like Rich Little, doing impressions without any real jokes. "Okay, now I'd like to do a little Richard Nixon for you now....Hey, look at me! I'm Richard Nixon!"

8 He was in Blue Thunder, too.
I agree, that HBO special was about the funniest thing I've ever seen. "Well that's a real pleasureable senSAtion." Can't find it anywhere, though.

9 His show was on very briefly before it was cancelled. Damn, it was funny, though.
I have always thought that the late 80's "class" of SNL was the best. (Carvey, Phil Hartman,Dennis Miller, Jon Lovitz, AdamSandler, Jan Hooks,Chris Farley...I think that they even had David Spade and Chris Rockon as kind of 'mascots'. Loved that group.

10 Carvey is from San Mateo - 20 miles south of SF. His dad was a teacher in San Mateo and his mom is the funny one - he got it from her. The teachers at San Mateo unified school district used to have a group of people who went camping together ( mid 60's to early 80's) and Carveys parents were in that group for a while- my mom said Mrs. Carvey was a naturally funny woman. I was too young and don't remember camping with them so it had to be pre 1972-ish

San Mateo used to be a very conservative city/county.

11 Somebody needs to upload the sketch where Carvey, as Bill Clinton, breast-feeds a bunch of kittens and puppies. It's a fucking riot (and was probably what got him canceled, or at least it didn't help).
