| The Planet's Got A Fev-eh... And The Only Prescription Is More Carbon Offsets![]() "The first thing I want to address is the science of global warming as portrayed by the vice president's film, 'An Inconvenient Truth.' This is something that I think we absolutely have to get right. Even the mainstream media, Mr. Vice President, are now noticing that global warming science is uneven and evolving. We need to be deliberative and careful when we talk about so-called scientific facts," Barton, the ranking member of the House Energy and Commerce Committee, said. "In your movie, you display a timeline of temperature and compared to CO2 levels over a 600,000-year period as reconstructed from ice core samples. You indicate that this is conclusive proof of the link of increased CO2 emissions and global warming. A closer examination of these facts reveals something entirely different," Barton said. Barton said a Science magazine article he was submitting for the record shows that historically, increases in CO2 concentrations actually lagged temperature changes by up to 1,000 years. "The temperature appears to drive CO2, not vice versa. On this point, Mr. Vice President, you're not just off a little. You're totally wrong. And it's not just this one article; the president of the National Academy of Sciences agreed, under oath, last summer in an Oversight and Investigations Subcommittee hearing on this very point," said Barton. Barton also noted that "historically, and repeatedly," CO2 levels have far exceeded concentrations now being reported, which are in the range of 380 parts per million. "Indeed, CO2 levels in the past have exceeded 1,000 ppm, and average earth temperatures have been much higher then than they are today. We know these things. … [I]t remains a fact, and is clear from the data we do have, that for hundreds of thousands of years, CO2 levels followed temperature rise, not the other way around, as you preach," he said. "You've also asserted that global warming will cause sea levels to rise by over 20 feet. The recent Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change report indicates a rise of at most 23 inches. "You state that there will be more and stronger hurricanes because of global warming. The IPCC report does not support this claim. You also state that malaria has been exacerbated in Nairobi because of global warming. The World Health Organization report does not support this allegation. In fact, malaria is not exclusively a warm weather disease – inhabitants of Siberia have long experienced malaria outbreaks," Barton noted. Thanks to Alex. Gore Refuses To Consume Less Energy: Energy use is going to destroy the world, but Al won't give up his heated pool for the cause: t has been reported that many of these so-called carbon offset projects would have been done anyway. Also, carbon offset projects such as planting trees can take decades or even a century to sequester the carbon emitted today. So energy usage today results in greenhouse gases remaining in the atmosphere for decades, even with the purchase of so-called carbon offsets.Reduce his actual, real "carbon footprint"? Please. Al Gore won't even try to reduce his meatloaf footprint. "Good For Her!" A CNN reporter says "Good for her" under his breath in response to Barbara Boxer's defense of Gore. Comments1

Joe Barton called Gore out pretty well, but only WorldNetDaily seems to be publishing his remarks, and it's missing Gore's response. http://worldnetdaily.com/news/article.asp?ARTICLE_ID=54808
The news outlets that did mention Barton (see ABC News) just gave a snippet of a conclusory-sounding quote from him ("you're not just off a little, you're totally wrong"); didn't include Barton's explanation of why Gore was wrong (citation of evidence that temperature rises preceded rather than followed carbon increases and other evidence); and spun it as Barton "attempting to discredit" Gore's arguments. Unbelievable. Actually, no: totally fucking predictable. Posted by: Alex at March 21, 2007 04:39 PM (fgyj8) 12
Too bad the republicans are all such nimrods who can barely think on their feet.
Gore: "The world will end in 50 years because of Glowball Warming." Dipshit senator: "Uhhhh... remember that time we went on that boat trip?" I'm not kidding. That's about how it went. Here's what I would have said: Gore: "We have to end all capitalism to save the world from Glowball Warming." Senator Fugazi: "Mr. Gore, can you explain why my constituents in Michigan were covered by a mile thick sheet of ice 12,000 years ago? Who was driving all the SUV's back then? The Gieko cavemen? Also, if the planet is in such a crisis, why did you personally use 20 times the average American's energy last year?" Posted by: fugazi at March 21, 2007 04:40 PM (pjOs6) 13

It has been said: When you politicize science, it is no long about science. It's about money and power.
This is what Al Gore is all about. He won an oscar and this is supose to vindicate and legitimize him. But how? Who voted to award him with the oscar? The members of the academy and how many of these people have Phds. in a field of natural science? None I would suspect. They were making a "political" statement. The attacks on this pseudo-science have to continue but talking about the heavy snowfall in anytown USA ain't gonna cut it. The attack has to be political as well. The point has to be made that even if a portion of the recommendations that Al Gore has proposed are put into law it will be the end of capitalism and put so much power in the hands of the federal government that the founding fathers will be spinning in their graves. The personal lifes of the citizens in this country could be controlled to the extent that life under communism in the old soviet union would be liberal in comparison. Posted by: Nice Deb at March 21, 2007 04:55 PM (CX6/b) 18
I don't get it. The hatred this man inspires, yet the message seems real. Why did over half of EPA employees sign a petition to get the administration working on the issue? Why do nearly all scientists agree on this and the few that don't seem to be funded by entrenched energy interests? Why are at least 12 states suing the EPA over this? Why are animal and growth patterns changing? Why are winters warmer? Why is this a conservative or liberal issue? What is the issue? Keeping the world healthy or keeping business as usual? Why not develop new businesses that benefit all of us? Is that a conservative or a liberal mindset? Is it wrong to be concerned about the issues at hand and not be labelled as a Gore grandstander? OK. Shoot the messenger. It's Gore. But who will stand, identify the problem, and ask that all of us work together? Will you step forward and rather than float emotive arguments, try to make the world better? Why roll the dice on the only planet we have?

He has been saying the same thing all over the country. I hear he even put it in a movie or something. But apparently, Republican Senators need advanced notice to nitpick his statement which is supposedly based on fraudulent science. A statement, mind you, which contained not one surprise. Advised,
The problem is simply this. The far left have made this political instead of scientific. If you don't think this is about money you are kidding yourself. We all care about the earth. Most of us are willing to look at data that says the earth is warming, but there is no real proof that I have seen that it is human causing it. I'm willing to do what I can to keep this earth clean and be environmentally aware, but I will not listen to hypocrites like Al Gore tell me how to live my life when he lives an extravagent lifestyle. I will not listen to scientists that have a political agenda either. Posted by: Rightwingsparkle at March 21, 2007 05:10 PM (ZLSG3) 26

Someone should conduct an environmental impact analysis of a typical big-budget Hollywood film. I'm sure that we'll find that all the petroleum used, electricity consumed, water contaminated, water consumed, and explosions sending toxic fumes into the atmosphere has a very big carbon footprint.
We should gather these statistics for all of the movies that Leonardo Dicrapio has been in and present him with the report to see how he responds. Hey, seattle, if Gore is worried about the environment, why isn't he directing his testimony to the world's biggest, by far, polluter, China?
Has Professor Gore or any of the other scientists even mention China in their testimonies? You recently wondered how anyone can make a political issue out of the Global Warming scare. In other words, you thought, like Lt. Horatio Caine, that Global Warming should concern us all. This entire scare was manufactured by Progressive activists to give their party something in which to believe. They recognized that Democrats and the Left stand for nothing. In order to fill that vacuum, they've embraced Global Warming. It's a sham. A political stunt. A propaganda tool to rally the troops and gain recruits. Why did over half of EPA employees sign a petition to get the administration working on the issue?
To paraphrase the question: "Why do thieves rob banks?" "Because that's where the money is." Apologies to Willie Sutton, but it's too good not to use. Or put it this way: How much grant money would you award to somebody who tells you "The earth is in a minor period of warming, well within historic norms, and it is most likely caused by solar activity?" Somehow, "you've got to give me money to solve this now or we're all going to die" just sounds more alarming. Posted by: MarkD at March 21, 2007 06:01 PM (CZzWE) 51

Will you step forward and rather than float emotive arguments, try to make the world better?
How's this for an emotive argument: "The planet has a fever. If your baby has a fever, you go to the doctor. If the doctor says you need to intervene here, you don’t say, well I read a science fiction novel that tells me it’s not a problem. If the crib’s on fire, you don’t speculate that the baby is flame-retardant. You take action. The planet has a fever." That was Al Gore, dismissing Barton's counterarguments (linked by me above, partially reproduced by Ace in an update to the post) while utterly failing to address a single point that Barton made. Barton didn't cite a "science fiction novel," he cited Science magazine, the president of the National Academy of Sciences, and reports from the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change and the World Health Organization -- all of which made points that were inconsistent with Gore's sensationalistic scaremongering. Gore replied with handwaving and, yes, emotive arguments about cribs on fire, just like you're doing. In essence, he and you are both saying, "Just join with me in doing something" -- anything -- but neither of you think it's appropriate to question, before taking drastic actions, whether or not the problem is actually as dire as Gore claims or whether the actions he advocates will even make any material difference or will be worth the costs. "The planet has a fever. If your baby has a fever, you go to the doctor."
And Al Gore is the doctor in this situation? Perfect. "If the doctor says you need to intervene here..." First of all, if the doctor is explaining the negative side effects of smoking while sucking back three fat Cubans (cigars, in this case, not cabana boys), you tend not to take him seriously. Second, if you find that the doctor has a financial interest in the drugs he's prescribing, you tend not to take him seriously. "...you don’t say, well Iread a science fiction novel that tells me it’s not a problem." But if you've read the reports that Barton cited, then maybe that's exactly what you say. "If the crib’s on fire, you don’t speculate that the baby is flame-retardant. You take action." Well, you demand that other people take action, at least. The Gore "Iced tea" defense was used because Global Warming, and in this particular case, Global Deep Frying, had made it so hot outside that Gore needed an emergency IV of Lipton. Posted by: benrand at March 21, 2007 08:03 PM (Ira3w) 90

it's not just the house. For decades, Gore's been exchanging favors with Occidental Petroleum, and growing rich off of that dirty, filthy oil company money, even while bad mouthing the oil bidness.
http://www.corpwatch.org/article.php?id=468 But if some "denier" scientist got some indirect funding from an oil company, once, decades ago, then his opinion is tainted. Posted by: stace at March 21, 2007 09:46 PM (A56/D) 95
You know, after last night's train wreck, I wasn't going to mention WP tonight for fear of getting him started again, but ... I've been thinking for some time it's a shame he didn't join in the fun on the Garrison Keillor/gay marriage thread. Or the fucking the dead deer thread. Now, just for a second or two, just imagine what life would have been like had Al Gore WON that election? Mandatory carbon credits deducted from your earnings like taxes. Manufacturing jobs lost overseas because of Global Warming Prevention regulations too tough and too expensive to meet. Saddam still in power in Iraq, funding international terrorism, killing anyone he doesn't like and selling oil right under the UN's Oil-for-Food clueless noses. Iran with an already-developed nuclear device thanks to the help of France and Russia, with someone being awarded a Nobel Peace Prize as a result. Hezbolla allowed to make war on Israel unchecked (oh wait, that happened without the help of the Goresicle.
Thankfully, "President Goresicle" never happened. BTW-can we finally get someone in the MSM to recognize that firing 8 Federal Prosecutors is NOT a story? I realize that's a tall order for a group of journalists who routinely IGNORE any fact, no matter how big, which doesn't agree with their "story". Goresicle goes to England, entire British Isles socked by freezing cold and snow. Goresicle comes back to the US, story repeats, only it's not NEWS worth printing, according to the MSM. I'm sick and feverish, and the cause is Global Warming all right! I'm sick of having to hear every single wild-ass environmentalist claim grandstanded around the MSM as fact, and ANY CHALLENGE to Goresicle either derided, diminished, or simply completely ignored, as was "the Great Global Warming Swindle". If the CO2 is really linked to the temperatures of 500 years ago, then we're living with the CO2 spike from around the time Columbus sailed the ocean blue! Chew on that thought for a minute. Posted by: Photobot at March 22, 2007 12:17 AM (rmPMB) 98
The thing the global warming zealots don't seem to comprehend is the damage having this idiot as their spokesman does to their cause. Whatever validity or logic their point had has been utterly lost in the ridiculous hype, the crass hypocrisy, and the outright lies. Al Gore is screaming wolf at the top of his voice with a bullhorn. What happens when everyone agrees he's full of crap?

There's a reason environmentalists are called "Watermelons" -- they're green on the outside and red on the inside. By using a universal emotional appeal (Mother Earth, Gaia, and all that), they are intent in bringing about a fully collectivized world.

The point of off-sets is to allow those of us who are not Ed Bagley Jr. to still live on the grid, but to at least recognize that we are screwing up the environment and allow us to do something about it. Posted by: Judd at March 22, 2007 12:34 PM (K92ee) 102
The point of offsets is to make some companies richer off the gullibility of some, and for those gullible ones to feel better about themselves while not making any real difference in their lifestyles.
