Now That It's Out...

He was 18 at the time. Correction: HotAir notes he was 17 during some conversations, 18 during others.

This doesn't make it right. It does, however, turn it from a case of the criminal to a case of the strongly socially disapproved. It's a firing offense (or, here, a resigning offense), to be sure, but not a criminal offense-- but boy, did the MSM present it as the latter.

Does this mean Mark Foley isn't a scumbag? No, he still is, and he's still an embarrassment to the party. However, the page in question's age has now crept slightly closer to the age of Monica Lewinsky, whose affair with a sitting president, we're told in no uncertain terms, was no one's business but their own.

PoliPundit notes, now that ABCNews has already flooded the zone with erroneous information, that the "boy" here was actually a "young man."

Radar jumps on the fake blog story, and notes it seems connected to the Daily Kos, through a poster calling himself "WHIntern."

Dan Riehl points out that Kos has WHIntern's IP, and could break a little news if he wanted to. But of course he won't, because WHIntern is most likely a DNC hack or a gay liberal blogger.

As far as I can tell, the Passionate American put all this together first. At least that's where I first saw it. I didn't mention it (sorry), because he mentioned the name of the young man involved, which I thought was dicey.

But it's out there now, and there's hardly any point pretending anyone doesn't know the name, or can't quickly get it if they so choose.

Again, Mark Foley's behavior was, to harken back to the 90's, "simply reprehensible." However, that's hardly a reason to juice the story up further than the fact will support.

And... This is important, because without any clear criminality or anything approaching pedophilia, it limits what Denny Hastert could have reasonably been expected to do.

1 Were any of the dirty e-mails sent when he was 17? Or were those all sent when he was 18? Should we believe what ABC tells us at all? I need a different source.

Hey, thanks for being honest with us, ABC--you hacks and liars.

2 A quick perusal of the MSM shows they are still stuck on the original storyline.

Posted by: Slublog at October 04, 2006 10:50 PM (zJ/lR)

3 From what I have read, the talk about going to his house for a drink was when the guy was 17.

But the sex during a House vote was when the guy was 18.

ABC has some explaining to do.

4 Man, am I already tired of all this. I think some other scandal is going to dominate the news before we get to November. This one seems to be running itself into the ground pretty quickly.

5 Folks, they are the DRIVE BY MEDIA

"The mainstream media … are drive-by shooters. This is exactly what they are. They pull up to a congested area; they spray a hail of bullets into the crowd, causes mass hysteria, mass confusion, mistakes and misinterpretation. Sometimes people or their careers actually die. The mainstream media then smirks and pats itself on the back, says, "Look what we can do," and they ride away unnoticed in the excitement. They are never blamed; they are never held accountable. In fact, they are lauded, they are held up as heroes, mostly by themselves. But they are. They just troll around looking for any issue they can to get everybody all worked up, creating hysteria. It is like a drive-by shooter. It's like road rage every day. That's what the mainstream press has become."
-Rush Limbaugh

ABC is just a bunch of liars. What disgraces! This wasn't some slip or error, this is ABC taking effort they should be into gathering and disseminating information and instead putting it into trying to put one over on you. They put EFFORT into it.

7 Foley's office and the Republicans should probably get some of the blame for the information problem. After all, they presumably knew the page's age. They've handled this terribly. PR gaffes that cost votes make me CRAZY! They're stupid, avoidable mistakes.

8 Doesn't matter,

The broadcasts, and the 24 hour news networks have focused on this, other than Fox, wich PROVES they are conservative, or rather not obsessive schills for the left, but Fox is a conservative arm, because they like to VALIDATE salacious material before reporting it, but thats the same as they being right wing HACKS, as far as the unvalidated information that the left shares with the media, and ODDLY ENOUGH! the media, other than fox shares it as though it's fact.

Who'd'a'thunk?

Chris Matthews spent 3 nights, consecutavely focusing on foley, after he spent 9 nights consecutavely on Macaca.

Yeah, the media is focused on "Truth" not the aristotlean concept of truth, but FUCK THAT! Aristotle didn't win any elections in the last 20 years.

12 Yes, we get it, "maf54@aol.com," Foley is a scumbag.

An honest media, however, would look at all aspects of this story.

Unfortunately, it seems we don't have one of those.

Stuff comes back to haunt you.

14 I'm seriously intrigued - has anyone actually read the stuff on stopsexpredators.blogspot.com? Seriously looked at the language? I'm telling you now, it's either a Glenn Greenwald sockpuppet writing on that site or he's got a doppleganger out there.

Analysis of the writing style is pure Glenn:

"I have been reading with interest various discussions"

( passive backing into the lead - a journalism trick to lend credibility to the message)

" with regard to Congressman Mark Foley. I am a White House Intern"

(I've written a Best Selling Book too... Glenn's posts are notable in how he boxes shadows - as if he's got to put his title up front because he knows deep down he's unworthy)

"I was shocked by what I found."

(Yes, SHOCKED. Good DAY sir! Feigning strong emotional response. Again, shadow boxing)

The language, word choice, bizarre self-loathing behavior requiring specific oddities in language construction, etc. all scream Glenn.

Is it possible our favorite conservative-gay loathing sockpuppet freak has struck again? Read those posts and go look at Glenn's posts one more time. It'll creap you out.

18 If the guy's 18, a little naughty IM is nothing. It's not like there's a stained blue dress or hide-the-cigar in the Oval Office here.

Hell, even at 16 he's at the age of consent in a lot of places.

Posted by: TallDave at October 04, 2006 11:25 PM (H8Wgl)

19 Could we maybe get rid of the guy posting the IMs?  We've all stipulated that Foley was a dirtbag and reposting them adds nothing to the discussion.

Posted by: Slublog at October 04, 2006 11:29 PM (zJ/lR)

20 Further digging... Greenwald is acting coy on this. His latest update shows some steering of the media and definite "sitting back and enjoying the roaring fire we started" observations:

http://glenngreenwald.blogspot.com/2006/10/various-foley-scandal-items.html

The silver bullet is that Greenwald is apparently torching Republicans for defining the age of consent at 18, not 16 as Greenwald feels it should be. Per Greenwald's own writing:

"Republicans drew the line of age of consent at 18 when, with overwhelming support, they enacted the "Adam Walsh Child Protection and Safety Act of 2006," which the President signed into law (with Mark Foley standing behind him). By definition, then, they consider the acts in which Foley apparently engaged to be criminal. They even enhanced the penalties for this conduct. For those purposes, it doesn't really matter what states have designated as the age of consent because House Republicans have declared it to be a federal crime to solicit or discuss sexual acts with someone under the age of 18."

So Republicans are going to learn the hard way not to mess with Greenwald? It wouldn't be a crime, except you Right-Wingers had to make it one, so now you'll learn? Serves you right for being Gay and Right?

We need to keep digging on Greenwald... his handwriting is all over this one. Read how close he is to the issue - just as an arson investigator is quick to examine those who are unusually curious about the fire, Glenn's proximity and knowledge has some explaining to do.

30 The sexual encounters generally occurred in or near the private study off the Oval Office -- most often in the windowless hallway outside the study.(36) During many of their sexual encounters, the President stood leaning against the doorway of the bathroom across from the study, which, he told Ms. Lewinsky, eased his sore back.(37)

Ms. Lewinsky testified that her physical relationship with the President included oral sex but not sexual intercourse.(3 According to Ms. Lewinsky, she performed oral sex on the President; he never performed oral sex on her.(39) Initially, according to Ms. Lewinsky, the President would not let her perform oral sex to completion. In Ms. Lewinsky's understanding, his refusal was related to "trust and not knowing me well enough."(40) During their last two sexual encounters, both in 1997, he did ejaculate.(41)

He touched her genitals, both through her underwear and directly, bringing her to orgasm on two occasions. On one occasion, the President inserted a cigar into her vagina. On another occasion, she and the President had brief genital-to-genital contact.(42)

A lot of discussions about my job, when I was trying to come back to the White House and then once I decided to move to New York. . . . We talked about everything under the sun."(61) On 10 to 15 occasions, she and the President had phone sex.(62) After phone sex late one night, the President fell asleep mid-conversation.(63)

Out of concern about being seen, the sexual encounters most often occurred in the windowless hallway outside the study.(113) According to Ms. Lewinsky, the President was concerned that the two of them might be spotted through a White House window. When they were in the study together in the evenings, he sometimes turned out the light.(114) Once, when she spotted a gardener outside the study window, they left the room.(115) Ms. Lewinsky testified that, on December 28, 1997, "when I was getting my Christmas kiss" in the doorway to the study, the President was "looking out the window with his eyes wide open while he was kissing me and then I got mad because it wasn't very romantic." He responded, "Well, I was just looking to see to make sure no one was out there."(116

41 Fear of discovery constrained their sexual encounters in several respects, according to Ms. Lewinsky. The President ordinarily kept the door between the private hallway and the Oval Office several inches ajar during their encounters, both so that he could hear if anyone approached and so that anyone who did approach would be less likely to suspect impropriety.(117) During their sexual encounters, Ms. Lewinsky testified, "[W]e were both aware of the volume and sometimes . . . I bit my hand -- so that I wouldn't make any noise."(11 On one occasion, according to Ms. Lewinsky, the President put his hand over her mouth during a sexual encounter to keep her quiet.(119) Concerned that they might be interrupted abruptly, according to Ms. Lewinsky, the two of them never fully undressed.(120)

Also, Fordham is possibly tied to blackmail issues in which he resigned from his other cong staff position.  And that blackmail possibly tracks back to Aravosis and Rogers.

63 Ace: To recap the Foley scandal: A  6 term Republican congressman known to be gay decides to retire but is asked by the House leadership to run again in 2006 and does so. He is then kneecapped by Democratic operatives late in the election scycle (typical October surprise) who have either been black mailing him or attempting to black mail him (Gatewaypundit, com). The kneecapping is acomplished by revealing internet chat  conversations that the Democrats stole by getting the congressman's internet I.D. from another gay Republican staffer. These internet conversations were characterized as "molesting/ sexual harrassing" and of course criminal. It then becomes obvious that the "boy victim" was actually 18 at the time of many of the  internet conversations and that no molesting actually occurred. The MSM deliberately misrepresent the age of the "victim". The MSM and Rahm Emmanuel (head of the Democrats Congressional reelection committee)knew about the internet chats for many months before revealing them 4 weeks before the election.  Some commentators say the  withholding of this information is possibly a criminal matter (why I don't know). Have I missed anything in this story? If I haven't, then how is this  Foleygate scandal any less bogus that the Dan Rather Bush national guard memo scandal of 2004?  Isn't this just a repeat of the phony manufactured scandals that the MSM are becoming infamous for?  Am I missing something here?

Posted by: pendelton at October 05, 2006 02:20 AM (NQSCc)

64 Pendleton:  Looks like you got it to me.  Except to add that it seems there will be more "outings" over the next several weeks and the dems and msm will again pop the oven door open on their souffle and it will collapse in a heap of shit.

Posted by: Stephanie at October 05, 2006 02:56 AM (6YRS5)

65 Even if he wasn't 18, what was the age of consent in the jursidiction where the IMs occurred? What is the drinking age where this occurred? The only impropriety (as opposed to a crime) may have been inviting someone under the drinking age for a drink.

I have to say there is a double standard for hetero and homo in regard to what is considered perverted when speaking of age. I'm speaking of course of the only looking and not touching category.  How many blog discussions were there in regard to the Olsen twins and a countdown to when they would turn 18. Most playboy centerfolds are 30 to 40 years younger than the men who buy the mag.  Britney Spears, Christiana Aguilara, Jessica Simpson were pre 18 when they first became 'sex' symbols.  I'm sure older homos have the same sort of attraction to this age group. Its when the line is crossed from innocent fantasy to a pursuit of physical contact when issues arise. Is that pursuit more prevalant in gay community?

In the case of Foley he attempted to cross that line and more troubling for me was he was using his position of power to do this. Is the same happening with female pages?

Posted by: roc ingersol at October 05, 2006 09:26 AM (m2CN7)

67 Predictably, the Democrats and MSM (but I repeat myself) are totally overplaying their hand on this.

68 It was if, all at once, the voices of a million democrats screamed out and then went silent.

Studds would IMit.

69 O.K., but will someone clue in Pelosi. She and her worldly wanker accomplices pervert the Constitution daily by usurping authority that legitimately belongs to the GOP *true majority* elected by we the people to set policy and lead.

Posted by: shark at October 05, 2006 10:05 AM (0tqZT)

70 Isn't the real damage here that if the GOP lose the majority in Congress they'll believe it's because of Foley and not their betrayal of their base? I really could give a shit about the GOP, frankly, but if they take the wrong message from a November defeat, that would be a tragedy.

Posted by: spongeworthy at October 05, 2006 10:20 AM (uSomN)

71 You've got that right, Spongeworthy.

Posted by: Nice Deb at October 05, 2006 10:51 AM (9ftXk)

72 They're mostly clinically retarded.

If they loose in November they'll probably take it as a sign that they need to negotiate surrender to Iran.

If they win in November they'll probably take it as a sign they need to negotiate surrender to Mexico.

Posted by: Entropy at October 05, 2006 11:04 AM (m6c4H)

73 Asking what a GOP politician might randomly decide to do is kinda like asking how my dog would react if I took a pencil eraser and shoved it up her ass.

We really won't know until we try.

Whatever happens I don't expect it to be logical or predictable.

Posted by: Entropy at October 05, 2006 11:07 AM (m6c4H)

74 If they retain congress I figure they will continue to pass the tools needed to fight against terrorism over the democrats objections. They probably will also extend the tax cuts while fighting off any attempt to nationalize healthcare. Hopefully they will also be in a position to push through Bush's next nominee to the SC if or when that happens. They may be retards but they are retards that are mostly on my side.

Posted by: roc ingersol at October 05, 2006 11:49 AM (m2CN7)

You got that right, Roc.

Posted by: Nice Deb at October 05, 2006 12:02 PM (9ftXk)

76 The joke is pretending that there was only one page here. We know there was multiple pages that Foley went after. The fact that not all of Foley's communications occurred before the page turned 18 does not excuse those that did. Furthermore, we know of other times when the page was under 18 when other emails or IMs were sent. Several sources now say the the Leadership was told two or three years ago about Foley's inappropriate approaches of underage children.

And if you want to go back to the 90s, the House did alot without 'clear criminality' then.

Posted by: PantsB at October 05, 2006 02:32 PM (98CTC)

77 the talk about going to his house for a drink was when the guy was 17.
But the sex during a House vote was when the guy was 18.

ABC has some explaining to do.
Posted by Jane at October 4, 2006 10:54 PM

Er no... that'd be you doing the explaining.
Specifically WTF is there a number in that sentence for ? Is it mentioned because it has significance ? If so what is it ?

I mean after all, there may be dozens of congressmen interrupting house votes to beat off in front of their computers without any assistance from internet partners. If we could just nail this down they could all be free to engage a certain age bracket of internet user for assistance in reaching the climax of legislative responsibility.
