| Saturday Night ONTWhat’s up suckaz! Looks like you are stuck with me tonight. Let’s see, where should we start? *digs into bag of content* Can You Guess What Happened Next?![]() As You May Have Heard, The NHL Season Started Today Explorer’s Rare Scotch Returned To The Antarctic ![]() Talk about whisky on ice: Three bottles of rare, 19th century Scotch found beneath the floor boards of Antarctic explorer Ernest Shackelton's abandoned expedition base were returned to the polar continent Saturday after a distiller flew them to Scotland to recreate the long-lost recipe…..Bottled in 1898 after the blend was aged 15 years, the Mackinlay bottles were among three crates of Scotch and two of brandy buried beneath a basic hut Shackleton had used during his dramatic 1907 Nimrod excursion to the Antarctic. The expedition failed to reach the South Pole but set a record at the time for reaching the farthest southern latitude. Shackelton was knighted after his return to Great Britain.I remember reading about them finding the scotch some time ago. I didn’t realize they were going to take it back to the Antarctic after analyzing it. That seems like an awful waste 100+ year old scotch. If you want to read more about the sensory analysis of the scotch, you can do so here. Dick Morris Has A New Book And It Sounds Awful Jesse Walker of Reason isn’t optimistic. These days Morris and McGann churn out a book or two a year, most of them disposable tracts that affect a populist pose. They're aimed at an audience of angry Americans who feel screwed and fleeced and ready to revolt—hence the books' titles, such as Screwed! and Fleeced and Revolt! The duo's efforts bear roughly the same relationship to dissent that an ambulance-chasing attorney has to medicine. It isn't clear who exactly buys the books. Morris is best known these days for that sex scandal and for a long series of wildly inaccurate political predictions. (He and McGann also wrote a book called Condi vs. Hillary: The Next Great Presidential Race. It appeared in 2005.) How do you transform that into an aura of expertise? Morris' ideal reader must be someone who vaguely remembers seeing him on TV but doesn't recall why. Increase Your Vocabulary With These 50 Collective Nouns Some of my favorites. See the rest at the above link. 1. Business of Ferrets The Time Bomb Within Obamacare I'll have what George Will is drinking. I wish I could agree with him, but the left worked too hard to get this passed. They aren't going to lets laws or "the market" get in their way. I can't really excerpt the article. You have to read the whole thing for context. It's short and worth the minute it takes to read. The Debt Crisis Debt is just a way to leverage growth. Businesses use debt all the time. They also use cash, and equity. Debt is just an arrow in a quiver to stimulate growth. In times of war, the US would not have survived if not for the use of debt. The Revolutionary War would not have been fought had the US not persuaded countries to purchase debt obligations. World War Two saw a massive increase in debt/GDP ratios, but we were fighting for our survival as a country.Archer Is Back! Kreiger is my favorite character. I hope he plays a prominent role this year. Monty was talking about Beethoven's 9th Symphony last night and I realized that I'd never listened to it the whole way through. Now seems as good a time as any, wouldn't you agree? Follow me on twitter. Tonight's ONT brought to you by Caterday ![]() Comments1

Love the car. My friends are on watch to make sure I do not become Crazy Cat Lady. I live alone and really don't like cleaning up after one cat, so more than two is not any kind of possibility, because it's just too... unsanitary. And who wants to have a house that smell like cat?

So I’m sitting here on the ONT. I’ve got cold beer, a crackling fire, and I’m re-reading Righteous Indignation (God, I miss Andrew. And I didn’t personally know him. As I said in an obituary that Ace declined to print because I’m not a cob, for many of us, Andrew functioned as a proxy for us-we didn’t have to be out there publicizing the fight because he was. I sometimes wonder how much vote fraud Andrew would have found had he still been around in November). Wife decided on the spur of the moment to go to the Mall in DC where she was dismayed to find herself surrounded by Obots, she had forgotten the inauguration is this weekend (*spit*). I just tucked little into bed with snugs and kisses. Life is good.
And yet… The other day we were in our old neighborhood. We’ve been married 10 plus years and there’s still nobody I’d rather be with than her. We started renting the bottom floor of an old (18th century) house in Havre de Grace, moved from there to a rented row house in Dundalk, then to another rental row house in nicer Parkville, and just this past year moved into a 4 bedroom, two and a half bath mortgage on a half an acre in Towson. In all ways it’s been the best decade of my life, and by any traditional measure I should be looking at a reasonably content second half of life. I just can’t help but feel that just when I’ve made it, gotten everything I ever wanted, the whole rotten structure is about to collapse. Scratch that, I know it’s going to collapse, and so do all of you. To paraphrase Sir Edward Grey “"The lamp that is America is going out, we shall not see it lit again in our time". I get the sentiment behind LiB, and agree in many ways, but when in all of history has anything other than a totalitarian regime taken over after a collapse? Americans are exceptional in so many ways, but we’re also only human, and a burning followed by a re-establishment of our core principles seems to me to be highly unlikely (although devoutly hoped for) outcome. Maybe I should have posted this in a DOOM thread rather than the ONT. Oh well, life is good now, the beer is cold, family is sweet and I’m still a free citizen of the greatest nation ever established by man. I shall therefore take to heart the words of Matthew 6:24 (Take therefore no thought for the morrow: for the morrow shall take thought for the things of itself. Sufficient unto the day is the evil thereof.). As my Jewish friends say *raises beer* L’chaim! Posted by: Weirddave at January 19, 2013 10:38 PM (aH+zP) 139

OK morons. Since you all brought it up, I'd like to pitch a business proposal. Remember the sidebar story the other day about treating Clostridium difficile diarrhea with a feces transplant (or more accurately, a feces enema) from a healthy donor? Well, I mentioned this to a doctor friend of mine today and he said, "Eww, gross! I'd rather save some of my own while I'm healthy for future use if needed."
So, now I have an idea for a business. Instead of a blood bank or a sperm bank, it would be a fecal bank. One could freeze the samples and store them in cryonic deep storage for decades. I'm thinking of calling it "Poop-sicles". Whaddya think? Riddle me this. Why are so many pro-level cheerleaders fugly? That chick needs make-up applied with a trowel. Stat! Posted by: Sean Bannion at January 19, 2013 11:24 PM (x78Lm) Very common. They're looking for the body/body type they want, personality, skill set to do the dances. they have them tryout in "full game make up." and if they aren't hideous with make up on, they don't care. Posted by: BCochran1981 at January 19, 2013 11:27 PM (GEICT) Plus when they are on the field they are 10 yards or so from the fans, so all the drunks in the front row see are the boobs and the hair. They then use their "spank banks" to fill in the blanks. Posted by: MrCaniac at January 19, 2013 11:38 PM (Zd/NW) 353

t-bird, I was just going to post on Stan the Man's passing.
When I was in little league, summer after 4th grade, the kids on the team who hadn't missed a practice were given a hitting instructional albulm at the end of the year. It was Stan. There were stories and such interjected. Going from memory (stop laughing) and I haven't heard the thing in at least 45 years, a couple of lines from Harry Carey's broadcast of a millstone. Here's the stretch. From the belt. And the pitch..... Line drive there it is!!! Into left field!!! Hit number 3000!!! Musial rounding first on his way to second with a double!!! Holy cow he came through!!! (someone) hands Musical the ball. He turns and throws it into the dugout. Here's the photographers out on the field.... I still have the album. I still love the game. I have a gun report. I went to the local (huge) pawn shop to check out pricing and stuff. They had lots of guns, just no EBRs. But their pricing seemed otherworldly. A crappy looking used 1911 that might have been used as a hammer some time in its past was tagged at $1295. The cheapest semi-auto handgun in the place was $400. I'd never heard of the brand.
Holy fuck. Most of the ammo was gone too, but what was left I just didn't have the heart to check prices on. The used finer print on their tags than lawyers do on disclosure statements. I did see a few 50 round boxes of 7.62 x51; they probably wanted a fresh human kidney per box. Posted by: GnuBreed at January 19, 2013 11:44 PM (cHZB7) 366

Because i read yesterday that when you're silent when people say stupid leftist shit (because you're just trying to be polite in a crowd) they take it as an assent or admission of their viewpoint. I'm done with that- I've spoken up twice in the last two days, including contradicting at length a black man in Watts. Liberating.

The only good thing is he was aiming down towards the ground, so the bullet didn't pass through his hand and then hit someone else. If it had he would have broken all four of the rules, although I'm guessing his non-violation of Rule 4 (be sure of your target and the backstop) was more by accident than design. Posted by: Barack XVI, taking Air Force One out to get some deep-dish pizza at January 20, 2013 12:43 AM (FcR7P) I was working the GrassRoots NC booth, we were collecting signatures to send to our elected representatives to tell them not to support any of Oblamo's gun control bullshit. One lady told me she didn't believe in gun control but "nobody needs thirty bullets to hunt deer!" I told her "Ma'am, 30 round magazines are not for hunting deer. They are for hunting tyrants." She didn't sign our petition for some reason...I believe she thought I was an extremist nutbag (I'm basing that on her calling me an extremist nutbag as she stomped off). So, I worked the GRNC booth for 3 hours and got about 15 minutes of looking around before they started clearing the place out thanks to Cletus's shenanigans. Everything was going for 1.5 to 2x what it was going for a couple of months ago except for 30 round AR mags which were only going for 4x what they were going for a couple of months ago. I asked about 6.5x50 brass at a couple of places that had brass and they looked at me like I had sprouted tentacles out of my head.
So, that was my very first gun show experience. Like I said, not likely to go back on purpose. Posted by: GGE of the Moron Horde, NC Chapter at January 20, 2013 12:55 AM (yh0zB) Posted by: lou's a girl at January 20, 2013 12:55 AM (EAAfY) 487

How The Progressive Left Creates Voters
The “American Freshman Survey,” which has measured the characteristics of incoming college Freshmen, including their own self-evaluation. The most recent survey has indicated that far more than half of students believe they are above average. In effect, college students are thinking more and more highly of themselves, despite actually performing worse, doing less studying, and being increasingly unprepared for the real world. What we have is a bunch of self-obsessed narcissists who believe they are more aware and more enlightened then everyone else. They believe that they deserve awesome and fulfilling careers that involve no word because they are just so awesome. I am more of a dog person, but I like the kittehs. I had a great orange tabby once named Thea (this was before I became very allergic to all cats, not just long-haired ones.) The thing that bothers me about cats(besides my allergies) is what was mentioned above: they can get in places you really don't want animals to go - like countertops.
Thea wasn't too bad, but I remember helping a guy with 5 cats move. We turned up at his place on moving day and found out he hadn't packed up the kitchen. I was wrapping up coffee mugs - and found cat hair in them. Dogs may be dirtier animals - but you don't find dog fur in coffee cups. Of course, the guy was kind of a slob, which made a difference. He was moving in with a friend of mine prior to their marriage. She was a neat freak. The marriage lasted 2 years. I asked for a French Press for Christmas last year - and got a Keurig instead. I barely use it. Those little Keurig portion cups are seriously overpriced. Although my SIL (who got me the Keurig) assured me you could use the portion cups twice- you can't. I only use it when I oversleep and have to get some caffeine in me quickly so I don't drive my car into a tree getting to work. Otherwise, I rely on the old Black and Decker coffeemaker. The Dude: You can buy a Keurig portion cup on Amazon and fill it with your own coffee, which is a bit more economical - the problem is you end up with grounds on the bottom of your cup. The Keurig impressed me the first time I saw one at a friends house, because of the quickness of it. But after owning one - I'd say, get a French press instead.

Apart from "A day in the Life", which is really good, there's not much on Sgt. Pepper but some 2nd rate (for the Beatles) songs. It's a B grade "Revolver" with extra sound effects. I can well understand, however, why N at narrow gauge would be pretty fragile -- that's getting down there. Posted by: cthulhu at January 20, 2013 03:59 AM (kaalw) Yep, uses Z scale track. Not bad if you are using commercial (Marklin) turnouts, but they have their own problems. I know but I lost my Rossini CD on the highway years ago from an errant gust of wind through the passenger side window. To this very day I imagine that some Mexican road worker has discovered the joys of...naw, who am I kidding!

I'm partial to "They Were Expendable". One of the finest war movies ever made. Absolutely superb casting, script direction, acting. Unforgettable. Posted by: Tuna at January 20, 2013 04:44 AM (M/TDA) 657

What's the theme of your layout?
Posted by: cthulhu at January 20, 2013 04:40 AM (kaalw) The one I'm working on right now is a double loop oval with a couple of sidings; one siding feeds a coal chute to fuel the locomotives and the other siding on the other side of the layout is the locomotive fuel track. It is destined for a coffee table some time, it is just practice for working with Nn3. The real deal, when it gets done, will have a mining theme based on the Perry County PA railroads; the standard gauge Pennsylvania and Susquehanna River and Western (formerly Perry County) Railroads and the narrow gauge Newport and Sherman's Valley, working on the premise that the NSV's tunnel through the Conococheague Mountain was successfully completed and opened untapped coal seams. That's going to have to wait for a while, I have to disassemble my starter standard gauge N scale railroad first to make room. Damp Rimfire.
What did the idiot think would happen to him if he totally succeeded in his attempt - that the gun had succeeded in actually firing? Was he thinking he was going to waltz out of there holding the angry barbarian (see video) crowd at bay with his very small pistol? Posted by: MoJoTee at January 20, 2013 05:12 AM (e1kfW) 676

Ben -
1. Taking your Obamacare prognostications from George Fucking Will is really taking them from a wish list of Worst Case Scenarios brewed up at the Heritage Institute - which is, as we all want so desperately to forget, WHERE OBAMACARE CAME FROM (okay, via Massachusetts Mittenscare, but the Romnetic 2002 took it from Heritage, which came up with it to respond to Hillarycare). Consider the source; depending on the source, you can find a "We're doomed ... DOOMED, I tells ya" scenario for everything. 2. Jeffrey Carter has a totally politicized view of "debt", not an economists one. He's a hack. 3. Once you've listened to John Eliot Gardner's version of Beethoven's 9th, you find yes you CAN go back -- Gardner uses ancient instruments played by classic romance era music academics -- but no you can't -- you'll never want to listen again to the drek you've posted. Gardiner's approach reflects how instruments really sounded BEFORE modern instrument manufacture turned them all into flawless synthetics; in Beethoven's day, a musician simply could not hold the note long enough to smooth the sound into muzak. Here, just a taste: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fx827bYPBNw Like a bat out of hell, yes no? Posted by: Rex the Wonder God at January 20, 2013 10:54 AM (21TJo) 680
As much as I like the Ninth (my favorite [not necessarily the best] is Bernstein at the fall of the Berlin Wall), I think the Seventh is more rewarding to listen to, especially in different conductors and ensemble's performances.
You can hear in that, especially the second movement, how the conductor makes a difference. Posted by: Otto Zilch at January 20, 2013 01:14 PM (eEa5w) 681
The assassin was taken down by security, the old guys jumped in for the fun of it. FUN STUFF TO WATCH FOR: notice the guy with the umbrella, the guy with the briefcase, and my favorite; the lethal butt slapper - he went back for seconds.
Also, the target was the head of the minority Muslim party which is presently in the middle of an inner-party power struggle. Also, an interesting little factoid. The target is a former agent of the Bulgarian secret police when they were ruled by the Communist party. Must be a wildly popular guy in Bulgaria.
