Explorer’s Rare Scotch Returned To The Antarctic
Talk about whisky on ice: Three bottles of rare, 19th century Scotch found beneath the floor boards of Antarctic explorer Ernest Shackelton's abandoned expedition base were returned to the polar continent Saturday after a distiller flew them to Scotland to recreate the long-lost recipe…..Bottled in 1898 after the blend was aged 15 years, the Mackinlay bottles were among three crates of Scotch and two of brandy buried beneath a basic hut Shackleton had used during his dramatic 1907 Nimrod excursion to the Antarctic. The expedition failed to reach the South Pole but set a record at the time for reaching the farthest southern latitude. Shackelton was knighted after his return to Great Britain.I remember reading about them finding the scotch some time ago. I didn’t realize they were going to take it back to the Antarctic after analyzing it. That seems like an awful waste 100+ year old scotch. Jesse Walker of Reason isn’t optimistic.
These days Morris and McGann churn out a book or two a year, most of them disposable tracts that affect a populist pose. They're aimed at an audience of angry Americans who feel screwed and fleeced and ready to revolt—hence the books' titles, such as Screwed! and Fleeced and Revolt! The duo's efforts bear roughly the same relationship to dissent that an ambulance-chasing attorney has to medicine. It isn't clear who exactly buys the books. Morris is best known these days for that sex scandal and for a long series of wildly inaccurate political predictions. (He and McGann also wrote a book called Condi vs. Hillary: The Next Great Presidential Race. It appeared in 2005.) How do you transform that into an aura of expertise? Morris' ideal reader must be someone who vaguely remembers seeing him on TV but doesn't recall why.

And yet… The other day we were in our old neighborhood. We’ve been married 10 plus years and there’s still nobody I’d rather be with than her. We started renting the bottom floor of an old (18th century) house in Havre de Grace, moved from there to a rented row house in Dundalk, then to another rental row house in nicer Parkville, and just this past year moved into a 4 bedroom, two and a half bath mortgage on a half an acre in Towson. In all ways it’s been the best decade of my life, and by any traditional measure I should be looking at a reasonably content second half of life. I just can’t help but feel that just when I’ve made it, gotten everything I ever wanted, the whole rotten structure is about to collapse. Scratch that, I know it’s going to collapse, and so do all of you. To paraphrase Sir Edward Grey “"The lamp that is America is going out, we shall not see it lit again in our time". I get the sentiment behind LiB, and agree in many ways, but when in all of history has anything other than a totalitarian regime taken over after a collapse? Americans are exceptional in so many ways, but we’re also only human, and a burning followed by a re-establishment of our core principles seems to me to be highly unlikely (although devoutly hoped for) outcome.
Maybe I should have posted this in a DOOM thread rather than the ONT.
Oh well, life is good now, the beer is cold, family is sweet and I’m still a free citizen of the greatest nation ever established by man. I shall therefore take to heart the words of Matthew 6:24 (Take therefore no thought for the morrow: for the morrow shall take thought for the things of itself. Other than sports, HBO has the only television worth watching. They have a ton of great series subscribers can watch at their leisure. If you haven't seen Band of Brothers, you should rent it. Rome, John Adams, Treme and especially The Wire are all great too. If I could cancel every other channel and still watch the sports I like,I would.

Yeah, the Coors price is a couple of cents difference. The Bacardi/Castillo can add up. About an eleven dollar difference on 1.75l bottles.

Two people hit by pellets and the deputy's hand was "slighty injured", I'm guessing Deputy Dawg was holding the shotgun by the barrel and got a burn and two folks standing in line got peppered when the pellets bounced off the hard surfaces but I don't know for sure. What we were told as we walked out was that Cletus dropped the mag out of his pistola and showed Deputy Dawg it was unloaded by shooting himself in the hand, but that's what you get when you listen to stories. At least there was a hand injury involved, but nothing else was as we were told.

Voting I would say pass a civics test (bare minimum, tell me how many senators and how many congressmen represent you to the US Government and what are their names), but short-circuiting Darwin by IQ testing Cletus only eliminates one of the ways he can take himself out of the gene pool. Besides, who gets to set the minimum IQ for gun ownership? Do not assume (political) powers for yourself that you would not want your enemies to have, because when the pendulum swings they are the ones that will be in charge.

Although my SIL (who got me the Keurig) assured me you could use the portion cups twice- you can't. I only use it when I oversleep and have to get some caffeine in me quickly so I don't drive my car into a tree getting to work. Otherwise, I rely on the old Black and Decker coffeemaker.

Yeah, that's what I'm saying -- and then they say he had two additional knives. And WTF was that about straddling him and hitting him with fists? What did they think this was, MMA? The one old duffer looked like he had the right idea and was about to feed him a laptop until it came out the back side of his neck, but got pushed aside.
At a minimum, the beating shouldn't have stopped while he had functional eyes and hands -- and they shouldn't have the waiters lead him away afterwards, he should need a gurney.

So I'm working a little on my railroad today, I've built some turnouts
and was going to try to see how to install them and their actuators. I
tried drilling a hole through the throwbar and the damn thing is way too
thin, I broke right through it. I had to order some wider PC tie
material and the railroad building will have to wait till it gets here.
No reason really for posting that, just that things are going a bit slow.

Psychedelic. It's a pretty good LP. Better than Sgt Pepper, I think, as a psych album. Apart from "A day in the Life", which is really good, there's not much on Sgt. Pepper but some 2nd rate (for the Beatles) songs. It's a B grade "Revolver" with extra sound effects. If you're going to go weird, "Gomper" and "Sing this Altogether" is the way to go. Plus it's got "2000 light Years From Home, "Citadel, "She's a Rainbow" and "2000 Man" on it. It's more a "Pier at The Gates of Dawn" thing, than Sgt. Pepper.

The one I'm working on right now is a double loop oval with a couple of sidings; one siding feeds a coal chute to fuel the locomotives and the other siding on the other side of the layout is the locomotive fuel track. It is destined for a coffee table some time, it is just practice for working with Nn3.
The real deal, when it gets done, will have a mining theme based on the Perry County PA railroads; the standard gauge Pennsylvania and Susquehanna River and Western (formerly Perry County) Railroads and the narrow gauge Newport and Sherman's Valley, working on the premise that the NSV's tunnel through the Conococheague Mountain was successfully completed and opened untapped coal seams. That's going to have to wait for a while, I have to disassemble my starter standard gauge N scale railroad first to make room.

Gardiner's approach reflects how instruments really sounded BEFORE modern instrument manufacture turned them all into flawless synthetics; in Beethoven's day, a musician simply could not hold the note long enough to smooth the sound into muzak.
