The Weirdest Pro-Fascist Progressive Fantasia You'll Ever See?

@verumserum was just discussing this film. It just played on TCM -- but you can actually watch the whole thing below.

It's... creepy.

Gabriel was the brainchild of media titan William Randolph Hearst, whose "yellow journalism" helped start the Spanish American War. By 1933, Jonathan Alter explains in "The Defining Moment: FDR's Hundred Days and the Triumph of Hope," "Hearst believed that the country needed a dictator but he wasn't sure FDR knew how to fill the role." So with this film, Hearst "set out to show Roosevelt the way."

Gabriel's fictional president, Judson C. Hammond, begins as an unflattering amalgam of Warren Harding and Herbert Hoover, a party hack more interested in bedding his comely assistant than in dealing with his country's economic woes.

But after Hammond is gravely injured in a car crash, the archangel Gabriel visits him in the hospital and imbues the comatose chief executive with the holy spirit of presidential activism. Hammond awakens as a man transformed. "I think, gentlemen, that you forget I am still the president of these United States," he tells Congress, "and it is within the rights of the president to declare the country under martial law!"

Hammond dissolves Congress, forcibly implements a ban on foreclosures, and creates an "Army of Construction" giving a job to every unemployed American.

He authorizes a special army unit to fight gangsters, several of whom are convicted via military tribunal, then shot by a firing squad with the Statue of Liberty visible in the background. "We have in the White House a man who's enabled us to cut the red tape of legal procedures," the presiding general notes approvingly.

...

Then, with his work on Earth done, the president ascends into Heaven.

FDR was delighted and wrote to Hearst that "I think it is an intensely interesting picture and should do much to help."

@verumserum says it's as weird and creepy and prog-porn as it sounds -- he says he kept waiting it for it to get less weird (I guess-- to explain late in the film that fascism is not, in fact, a panacea) but it never does.

The column I linked above notes the "unholy" fusion of secular religion and progressive politics.

Good thing we're more enlightened than that, now.

I haven't watched it yet; I don't know if I can devote 1:25 to this piece of fascist shit, even as a curiosity.

This curiosity, though, does demonstrate how close we are to fascism at any time. It's such a temptation for those without an appreciation of The American Way.

But, again: Thankfully we're more enlightened than that now.

Bigger version here.

Some clips via @verumserum:

Post-kangaroo-court execution of the bad guys.

The angel Gabriel turns the corrupt, inept president into a a pro-fascist progressive.

Now progressive fascist president declares Jeffersonian Democracy and also martial law.

40 I'm almost done with The Second World War by Antony Beevor. It's an exhaustive accounting of just about every facet of the conflict. FDR's portrayal in this work is mind-numbing. The man almost idolized Stalin, in many respects. And his cold and calculating opportunism, coupled with a healthy dose of ego-fueled elitism makes JEF/TFG look like a piker.

43 "But, again: Thankfully we're more enlightened than that now."

Not really sure which way you meant that, but anyways... (it depends on the definition of "we" and "enlightened" -- and "'re" I guess)

Nothing more enlightened than throwing enlightened words like "Fascist" and "creepy" around.

In fact, that's all that the Enlightenment consisted off. People shouting "Fascist" at each other, and passively-aggressively critiquing everything they didn't like as "creepy." Or "sexist." Or "homophobic."

Nowadays, "fascist" is just a name you throw out there (if you can even fucking spell it, which most of us cannot -- I presume that it's discrimination based on looks that's meant by "facism"?). But it had its adherents, before the war. In Duh Yerp, you were the one or the other, that was it.

The nazzies had the goods on Lindbergh, as he found twoo wuv there and fathered some children to prove it. I can't say whether he was enthusiastically pro-Hitler, or just rubishly anti-international-bankers, which you could pick up anywhere in the twenties, like from Hank Ford or the inventor of the Royal Silent-Flush.

94 The Ultimate Decree was not the same thing as the Dictatorship. The UD authorized the consuls to take whatever steps necessary to secure the safety of the state. It was for dealing with immediate problems like riots or Cataline's conspiracy. The Dictatorship was an emergency office of state that that over ruled all the other offices for a term of six months, when one was appointed the consuls and the praetors had to surrender their lictors and were only allowed whatever authority the Dictator gave them. Traditionally the Dictator was for dealing with military emergencies* and would leave the city magistrates in charge of the civil operations in the city while he went and took command of both consular armies.

After the war with Hannibal the office of Dictator fell out of favor and the Romans didn't resort to it again until Sulla named himself Dictator for Life. Sulla took the opportunity to kill the shit out of his opposition and then retire in peace. Caesar got the title for himself and tried to win hearts and minds.

* Sometimes a Dictator would be appointed to preside over elections if both consuls had died in office.

Posted by: the guy that moves pianos for a living.... at September 21, 2012 08:10 PM (BF5Y9)

95 The Roman Republic had a mechanism for this sort of thing. The Senate would pass an Ultimate Decree declaring a man dictator for the term of one year. His lictors would then put axes in their bundles of rods (fasces). It did cut through the red tape and saved their shit a handful of times.

A lot of people seem to have trouble spelling Communist/Socialist. Look, it was even in Hitler's stupid party name: National-Socialist German Worker-Party (which is the correct translation). And that's too long, so you call them Nazis (from NAtionalsoZIalisten or National-Socialists in English). But that sounds stupid, and you want to come off as "sophisticated" and suck Comintern/Leftist cock so you call them "fascists."

History has been de-emphasized purposefully so that we will forget that the desire to control large populations only leads to the gulag or the gas chamber. Equality emphasized over liberty can only lead to a nation of equal slaves living under a more equal overseer class who must take upon themselves the burden of control for our greater good.

Ok. 134 I am a democrat because I believe in the Fall of Man. I think most people are democrats for the opposite reason. A great deal of democratic enthusiasm descends from the ideas of people like Rousseau, who believed in democracy because they thought mankind so wise and good that everyone deserved a share in the government… The real reason for democracy is just the reverse. Mankind is so fallen that no [one] man can be trusted with unchecked power over his fellows. Aristotle said that some people were only fit to be slaves. I do not contradict him. But I reject slavery because I see no men fit to be masters.

145 It was Antony that really wanted Cicero dead. Cicero had executed Antony's father (or step father?) during the Catilinarian crises and then had denounced Antony's attempts at securing the city after Brutus and Cassius had been driven out to the provinces. It was Cicero that backed the young Octavian and put him in a position to wreck Antony's own plans for supremecy.

If Cicero had stuck to his escape plan and made it to Sicily he probably would have been amnestied by Octavian in the general pardon following the treaty with Sextus Pompey.

Henry Ford fellow-travelled for a while: he sent the complete Model T plant, complete with supervisors(!) as a gift to the Soviet bipples, when he was done with it. Then he got some nice medals from von Ribbentropf, so he's a little hard to pin down.

Studebaker, American as they ever got (and headed during the Difficult Times by a gentleman from Huntsville, who couldn't face reorganization and shot himself neatly), had a family-sized car called a Dictator. 180 From reading "Liberal Fascism", I understand that Mussolini, who was a socialist in his youth, invented fascism as a "new, improved socialism". He sought to combine the strengths of socialism and capitalism and put private business in the service of the state.

Mussolini took power in 1922, and both Hitler and Roosevelt copied his methods in the 1930s.

The Nazis and Soviets formed an alliance in 1939, but when Hitler double-crossed Stalin and invaded Russia in 1941, it was Stalin who promoted the meme that fascism was the "opposite" of communism. Communist parties throughout the West parroted that line, and the idea that fascism/nazism was "right wing" began.

The word "fascist" eventually became an epithet that leftists used against anyone who disagreed with them. Nixon was a fascist, Reagan was a fascist, bush was a fascist. It conjured up images of armbands and jackboots, but in reality it is an economic philosophy. But the word lost all meaning through misuse and repetition.

The truth is that socialism, communism, fascism, and nazism are all forms of collectivism, and are thus birds of a feather. They are all anathema to the American concepts of limited government, individual liberty, and free-market capitalism.

Today fascism is on the rise all over the world. The only place you see doctrinaire Marxists today is in academia. Despite keeping the trappings of communism, today's China is fascist. The People's Liberation Army owns and operates businesses. Obama is also a fascist. What we now call "crony capitalism" is basically a euphemism for fascism.

Obama didn't start it, either. It's been building for years. Ayn Rand said beck in the 60s that America had elements of both of socialism and fascism. Fuel mileage standards for automobiles are an example of fascism, since the government presumes to dictate to auto manufacturers how they should build cars. It has become absolutely pervasive.

217 157 fyi, the Fascists were also socialists.

Yep, Ace...they were.

I still get amazed, when I see people try to argue about this.

Small 'f' -fascism...was sold to people, as being 'Unifying'.
But it was basically, forced unity...and the forceable repression of any dissent...totalitarianism, sold as 'Unity'.

The word, 'fascist', comes from fasces...or a bundle of sticks.
The bundle of sticks, or rods...was an ancient Greek icon for "In Unity, Strength'.
The two things are unrelated, politically...but the Fascists co-opted the old meme of 'Strength in Unity', to force their will upon people, as socialists often do.

Large 'F' -Fascists...practiced forced unity, in a totalitarian fashion....taking it upon themselves to proclaim what constituted 'Unity'.

So it really betrays someone's knowledge of history, when they try to declare that 'fascism' was just a political party.
There is more to it, than that.

So sayeth, wheatie.

257 There's a pleasure I've noted, that really needs a word, in "having things you already know affirmed."

This is largely why people watch Shark Week. They know what there is to know of Sharks; they just enjoy having it said to them again, knowing that they already knew that.

I have no patience, however, for fucking morons who attempt to derail conversations in this fashion. Just so they can hear it affirmed, once again, that the National Socialist German Worker's Party was in fact Socialist and in support of things like Volkswagons and Mediterranean getaways for German WOrkers.

This is one of the few things this moron has in his thimble-sized brain and GOD DAMN IT if he will let you mention "Fascist" without repeating this to him.

He needs that affirmation. It's the one thing he knows, so he wants to hear it.

In contemporary discourse, Fascist is a synonym for/allusion to Nazi, just as creep is an allusion to mental illness.

The knowledge that the Nazis were Socialists is indeed as common as "the sun has a gravitational field." Which is to say, the average person comprehends the implications of both those propositions about equally.

264 I am sure many are aware of this but if you really wanna see the correlation between Nazism and Socialism look at the German Labor Front. When the Nazis came to power they abolished separate trade unions and then forced everyone to join one super union if they wanted to work in Germany. In essence, the NSDAP was a far-left socialist party with a hard-on for, among other things, bankers, stock exchanges, capitalism, and lending at interest, all of which of course became convolved with anti-Semitism. The socialist aspect was feathered after the Night of the Long Knives, when the SA leadership was arrested during a gay orgy and wiped out.

The SA had to go because it was the wellspring of the far-left sentiment, and scared the shit out of the industrialists (and also the Army, which it dwarfed), who insisted that the SA be reined in before they would support Hitler (as opposed to the Communists, the KPD, which was effectively the only alternative).

Roehm, head of theSA,was (IIRC) the only Party member who treated Hitler as a peer (the familiar "du"), could have been a rival for power, and adamantly opposed Hitler's efforts to move away from pushing hard-left policies.

Posted by: zombie at September 21, 2012 08:52 PM (+cx5n)

The replacement of the political axes of "free vs. control" for economic and personal liberties was always off, IMHO. zombie presented a decent replacement.

In particular having one of the axes be "immutal human nature" vs. "Rousseau-esque maleability of a tabula rasa was excellent, and shows how the left is on one side (e.g. the enlightened will shape mankind to perfection), and the right (a more Burkean belief that humans will always act lke humans).

However, I always thought the "extent of government" axis ought to have been replaced with a "individual" vs. "collective" axis. It is the difference between believing that the government is derived from individuals and that the government ans no powers it was given, and believing in a Le dieu fals la Volonté Générale from which individuals are endowed by the state all things and freedoms.

Also, good job zombie! Keep it up!

Atone time, fascism was considered the wave of the future. Many Americans (including FDR) were highly enamored of it. "Government-business partnership"just sounded so ... sensible. Hell, you'll often hear the phrase today, especially among leftists.

Of course, they then rail against "big business," apparently not realizing that there is no point in the government partnering with every dry cleaning place. If a business isn't big, it doesn't have enough economic clout to be worth bothering with.

Yeah. In a weird way that would be unkind to them. But, more importantly, if would pass Barry along with yet more unearned praise instead of an honest appraisal.

TFG is just a pastiche of FDR or Wilson. Remember the stories that came out about how TFG wrote a figurative (or was it a literal?) check next to the economy box after he got the stimulus bill through?

It's not that he believed as Wilson or FDR did that the spending would be a benefit to the economy. I don't even think he was cynical in thinking it would gain more power for the State. He just checked it off incuriously because that's the image he had in his head and the image he wanted to portray. He wanted to be like FDR and that's what FDR did.

The Greeks used the 'bundle of sticks' as a symbol of their Unity.
Put an axeblade on a bundle of rods...to use in battle...to signify this.

The Romans used this same symbol....to *force* unity on their conquered lands.
That is how it first started to have a negative connotation.

I thought he was great as the lecherous preacher in "Rain."

"Rain" was made the same year as "Gabriel". Early version of Sadie Thompson, with Joan Crawford. Good movie.. he's great as usual in it.

As a Walter Houston fan I also love "Kongo"-1932.. remake of "West of Zanzibar" made four years later tries to outdo the Lon Chaney original in morbidity.

He succeeds!

I don't want to shit on anyone's efforts to be healthy, and if you people enjoy running or plan to compete because that's your thing, then that's fine.

However, you should know that endurance training is not healthy. It damages the heart and joints; it creates a tremendous amount of oxidative stress and inflammation, and it conditions your body to shed weight which gives you shitty body comp and a malfunctioning brain.

And, in my opinion, it's boring as hell.

You can do interval training and get the same VO2 gains without all the damage. You will get much better body comp (look at sprinters vs endurance runners) and you'll get in done in 1/4 of the time.

483 Here's one fun thing:

France had stolen all the land from the Church to pay their massive debts. But how they did this was interesting; because they couldn't sell all the land at once, they created paper currency, assignats, based on the ultimate net value to one day be realized of all land seized.

So it was currency but sort of backed (sort of) with, in theory, a fractional piece of the ownership of confiscated land.

Anyway, the government of COURSE began inflating the shit out of this money, because the "people" demanded it.

And then people who used silver and gold (like merchants, who traded with farmers, silver for wheat ) would say "No, there's no way I'm giving you a bushel of wheat for one assignat; the money's been inflated to the point where it's not worth one fifth that."

So the government, of course, passed a law that said you HAD to sell the wheat for the supposed "value" of the assignat, even though it was greatly diminished in value.

So what happens is that merchants cannot actually cover their own costs -- they're receiving low-value currency but paying high-value currency for the wheat -- and they resort to the black market and stuff, and of course they get arrested and then beheaded as criminals against the state.

It's wild stuff, man.

Pretty much all the Really Bad Ideas we are still vexed by all started there.

502 Assignats were paper money issued by the National Assembly in France from 1789 to 1796, during the French Revolution. The assignats were issued after the confiscation of church properties in 1790 because the government was bankrupt. The government thought that the financial problems could be solved by printing certificates representing the value of church properties. These church lands became known as biens nationaux (“national goods”). Assignats were used to successfully retire a significant portion of the national debt as they were accepted as legitimate payment by domestic and international creditors. Certain precautions not taken concerning their excessive reissue and comingling with general currency in circulation caused hyperinflation.

Originally meant as bonds, they evolved into a currency used as legal tender. As there was no control over the amount to be printed, the value of the assignats exceeded that of the confiscated properties. This caused massive hyperinflation. In the beginning of 1792, they had lost most of their nominal value. In 1796, the Directoire issued Mandats, a currency in the form of land warrants to replace the assignats, although these too quickly failed.

Doesn't everybody know that???

506 >>>runninrebel, what kind of interval training do you recommend?

I typically do foot sprints once a week for health. But I'm mostly centered around powerlifting and I don't want intervals to cut in on that.

But basically you can do interval training with weights, in the pool, sprinting, on the bike, it depends on your skill level in any of those activities. If you are just going for general health or weight loss then it really doesn't take much, like 2x a week. Diet is 80%.

Most importantly it should be something you enjoy doing and can do forever.

But if you're bored, you're doing it wrong. The workouts should only be 20 minutes or so but you should be wiped out and heaving, near 90% heart rate.

521 So what happens is that merchants cannot actually cover their own costs -- they're receiving low-value currency but paying high-value currency for the wheat -- and they resort to the black market and stuff, and of course they get arrested and then beheaded as criminals against the state.

And no, the officer's name wasn't 'Flashman'. He always came out on the right end.

>>>Holy crap--so that basically explains in better detail why when they were out of bread--

>>>Marie Antoinette's--"let them eat cake!" answer must have been all the more infuriating.

Well... hmm, I forget when they started this money thing... I know they seized the land when Louis was still on the throne, and at some point they were then imprisoned (later, guillotined).... I don't know if one leads to the other, though, or if they were already well out of power (and headless) when the hyperinflation began.

I think the hyperinflation was a later event.

Although we're talking about six years here so it's hard to keep it straight.

I think the inflation stuff happened later, though, after they'd already been to the guillotine.

The trouble with wheat set this whole thing off. Two bad things happened at once:

First, liberals had been pushing for a long time to liberalize trade in wheat, so that farmers weren't banned from selling to foreign countries and required to sell to Paris (at a lower price).

They finally got that. And it would have all worked except there was a disastrous wheat harvest the year before the revolution (or two years before). So what happened is that the people blamed the liberalized trade laws for the lack of cheap (mandated cost) wheat.

Now we end liberalization and go back to state control.

She probably said that (or is alleged to have said it; she didn't really say it) during that period.

It went like this:

Napoleon took over the 1st Republic and turned it into the first Empire (though it was still a "Republic"...).

After Napoleon got defeated, Louis XVI's brother became Louis XVIII (the royalists considered the Dauphin to beu Louis XVII).

Then Napoleon came back for his "100 days."

Then Louis XVIII got the throne back. He died and was replaced by Charles X.

The people hated him, so the trone was passed from the house of Bourbon to the house of Orleans, and Louis-Philippe took over.

Then the French kicked him out and set-up the 2nd Republic. They installed Louis-Napoleon Bonaparte as President for life. Louis-Napoleon then declared himself emperor to create the 2nd Empire.

After the 2nd Empire fell due to the Franco-Prussian war, the people were inclined to go back to a King, but infighting between the houses of Orleans and Bourbon (which still goes on today), lead to the 3rd Republic.

This lasted until WWII, when the Vichy government was set-up.

After WWII, the 4th Republic was set-up but collapsed in the late 50's and was replaced by Charles De Gaulle and the 5th Republic.

There is a wall of lies built so well and so strong that I don't know if we can get through it.
The public never knew FDR was sick. I just realized how big a conspiracy it took to hide from the public that FDR couldn't walk and that at the end he was dying. But the media hid it. They hid it and he died and there was no protest over the hiding. Why wasn't there a public out cry by the people for being decieved? Why didn't they care?
If they could do that then. Why didn't I realize that they can and will keep Obama in office and there is probably nothing we can do about it. They own the perception of truth. They create the illusions and it doesn't matter what is happening in the world. The news is controled to show only what they want them to know.
No matter how much dirt there is. No matter how many Ambassadors die. They have their slaves so drugged on a Friday night and the millions of non-thinking zombies living hellish lives and convinced to vote for more of it... They control the knowledge. They control the history. They control the people with no brains of their own.
They taught them how not to think. And the people thank them for not making them think.
We thought we were free but were not. They control everything.

595 14 "...It's filmed in that cheap stagey way so it's basically a radio play with pictures anyhow."

Ace has a little ways to go before he's in Ebert territory.

For the entire period from the first talkie to Citizen Kane, pretty much ALL Hollywood movies were blocked out to be staged like a play. Walter Huston, the actor playing Judd Hammond, came to be among the dominant 'moral presence' stars of the early talkies BECAUSE he had guaranteed "stage presence" [Huston, father to John "Chinatown" Huston, grandfather to Angelica "The Grifters" Huston, was born Canuck ... no doubt another 'aHA! factor for the Doughy Pantload theory of political germination.].

Ace, you'd maybe know all this if you actually WATCHED, because, for it's time, it's pretty good (bearing in mind that once Orson Wells brought European art film sensibilities to Hollywood, the 'stagey' period was done), and it actually does a great job of exploiting a lot of the ideas from the era just after Black Friday, as well as the understandable related fears.

I'd be particularly interested in knowing WHICH parts of the script Frank Roosevelt worked on, regardless of whether those parts made it into the screen version.

But Ace: you and verumserum both are being simplistic as hell about all this. Obviously, once you've ASKED or DEMANDED dictatorial powers from Congress and received them, as President Judd Hammond does in this fiction, by definition you're a dictator. But Roosevelt didn't do that, indeed no president, of either major party, has acted as a dictator, even though at least several (I think most) acted fraudulently on repeated occasions, and at least 3 committed provably criminal acts ... but for Nixon's Caveat.

The reason I bother to raise all this is because, having been in and around the edges of this blog for almost 6 years now, I've never seen a better opportunity to illustrate the folly of the Right's great Obama fable about use of fiat power. What you've done here, Ace, is to illustrate why Obama is essentially unbeatable, at least by Republicans, and would become another FDR but for the 22d Amendment: because he DOESN'T pursue dictatorial power, at least not in domestic non-national security areas. What he does is invite his opponents to argue and reason with him, and early on, the Republicans having done that a couple of times and learned from those experiences that it pretty much only worked to limit their ability to deliver on promises to their funders, effectively ceded prima facia CREDIBILITY to Obama on a wnole range of issues he otherwise wouldn't have been able to gain without spending decades in Congress.

This is also why Romney's 'last best hope', the debates, is a pipe dream. There probably isn't a single person in the entire country, certainly outside the Dem party in which he's most vulnerable, who can beat him in the presidential election game. Tell the truth, Ace: you KNOW damn well that this is why every other CREDIBLE GOP presidential nominee sat this one out and ceded the nomination to a guy no one likes, and for a lot of very sound reasons.

I went yetanother direction (working with another), and have the two axes as "Secular vs. Divine" (believing that "ultimate" morality can be defined by humans versus believing that "ultimate" morality is already defined by an external source and can only be interpreted by humans) and "Exclusive vs. Inclusive" (believing that those who do not follow the "one true path" do not "really" qualify as human beings versus believing that everyone always qualifies as human being, even when they embrace another, absolutely contradictory, belief system).Further, it should be understood that as a political system derives from an ideological system, an economic system is created by a political system in accordance with the definitions provided by the ideological system. That approach provides not just the "whats" of the varying views, but the "hows" and "whys" they exist.

Cicero got whacked by the Second Triumvirate, Octavian, Anthony, and one other of Caesar's generals, and there was no formal one, it was an informal term to describe 3 powerful men who collaborated to dominate government politics.

The first Triumvirate was the Populare political alliance of Caesar, Cassius and Pompey, the 3 of which totally dominated Republican politics and were able to consistently choose successive Consuls because of their combined clout.

The second Triumvirate was a mock-up of the first and political of course, but really more of a military alliance really. It was created in the midst of violence and open factional civil warfare after Caesar's assassination by the Senate, a good dozen years after Cassius's death sparked the breakdown of the alliance between Caesar and Pompey which led to civil war.

Read his thoughts on Julius Caesar and Sulla. Before Mark Antony, he was pretty ardent in opposing them

Read Cicero: The Life and Times of Rome's Greatest Politician by Anthony Everett.

Cicero's private writings show he was something of a hypocrite, certainly he was a master of rhetoric who posed as a moderate and flirted with populare rhetoric, but he was optimate in aspiration. He was basically like Jonah Goldberg's "Shirpa Populare". He wrote lovely treatises (which were heavily edited), but in practice it seems his MO was to reconcile populare rhetoric with optimate privilege.

He certainly loathed Caesar, but I think it was as much or more a matter of culture, and social/tribal affiliation as anything. Cicero yearned to be a part of the Smart Set socially, the Betters, the aristocrats with dignified family history, which he could never quite be a part of or respected by because of his own parochial heritage. Caesar was the social reformer, who was born into that aristocrat line and then renounced it for prominence of the self-made variety.

In the end, Cicero himself came to view the Optimates as no different when it came to the reasons he ostensibly hated Caesar, and a tyrannous Pompeian dictatorship was no less likely than a tyrannous Caesarian one, and his own political visions were damned either way. I think he overestimated Caesars inclination toward tyranny, but up until just before the very end he certainly underestimated that of the Optimates. Cicero hated and feared many of Caesars Populare allies and associated Caesar with them, but Caesar was fairly moderate and famously consensus-seeking in his own right, and went out of his way throughout his entire life trying to win over Cicero, whose political philosophies he seemed to be quite a fan of on paper.

At any rate, that book (among others) accurately portrays very significant differences between Caesar and Sulla. Sulla was an optimate and damn near killed Caesar, who spent his childhood in exile hiding from Sulla. Much of Caesar's dictatorship was in stark contrast to Sulla's dictatorship and the practices associated with it. Caesar was always very eager to prove he was no Sulla and never would be.

599 Specifically though I think it was Anthony that whacked Cicero, and Octavian probably simply consented to it. The other dude ended up being pretty inconsequential. Octavian and Anthony would end up shortly becoming co-consuls and co-dictators, until Octavian eventually whacked Anthony along with Cleopatra and declared himself Emperor.

600 Sorry so late, and no one will probably se this, but it was a very entertaining thread, but wanted to relate the first thing that occurred to me, I read through to see if anyone had pointed out that the Archangel Gabriel was the same one who is credited for dictating the Koran to Mohammed.
