Obama Goes Off Prompter

For such a supposedly fantastic speaker, it's sure hard to bring to mind any outstanding Obama quotes. I remember nothing from his big post-racial race speech, his inaugural, his state of the union addresses. What I remember is when he goes off teleprompter.

"Why can't I just eat my waffle?"

"I've now been in 57 states -- I think one left to go."

"The private sector is doing fine."

"At a certain point, you've made enough money."

"The Cambridge police acted stupidly."

"I bowled a 129. It's like -- it was like Special Olympics, or something."

"They get bitter, they cling to guns or religion or antipathy to people who aren't like them."

"We're the country that built the Intercontinental Railroad."

"I think when you spread the wealth around, it's good for everybody."

"You didn't build that."

So this, to me, is great news:

President Obama is weaning himself off his teleprompter.

At recent campaign events in Pennsylvania, Virginia and again Monday in Ohio, Obama spoke to crowds in high school gymnasiums and at crowded outdoor events without his teleprompter, instead using written notes.

The difference is dramatic. Instead of turning in his characteristic manner from right to left and back again, reading from the two sloping, clear-plastic planes of his teleprompter, Obama has glanced down at pages in a binder on his podium.

I have to believe that the writer wrote that "difference is dramatic" paragraph with tongue firmly planted in cheek. Instead of wagging his head back and forth, he bobs it up and down? Shyeah, dramatic.

It’s only good to go off the teleprompter if your opinion more
closely resembles the feelings and principles of the people rather than
your advisers. Obama’s go farther away than his advisers. Conversely,
Romney’s opinions actually go closer to his base than his advisers
opinions (thanks GOP insiders!). So his off prompter moments don’t hurt,
but they help.

Someone else went off prompter, and against his advisers: Reagan at the Berlin Wall. That worked out well.

GIBSON: All right. You have, however, said you would favor an increase in the capital gains tax. As a matter of fact, you said on CNBC, and I quote, "I certainly would not go above what existed under Bill Clinton," which was 28 percent. It's now 15 percent. That's almost a doubling, if you went to 28 percent.

But actually, Bill Clinton, in 1997, signed legislation that dropped the capital gains tax to 20 percent.

OBAMA: Right.

GIBSON: And George Bush has taken it down to 15 percent.

OBAMA: Right.

GIBSON: And in each instance, when the rate dropped, revenues from the tax increased; the government took in more money. And in the 1980s, when the tax was increased to 28 percent, the revenues went down.

So why raise it at all, especially given the fact that 100 million people in this country own stock and would be affected?

OBAMA: Well, Charlie, what I've said is that I would look at raising the capital gains tax for purposes of fairness.

117 I was wondering yesterday how FDR won reelection in 1936. The US was still in a depression but FDR won easily.

Part of the '36 strategy was to again run against Hoover as a scapegoat. The other reason why FDR won was the Republican candidates were all half-assed progressives.

But still FDR managed to win reelection during a depression with shitty policies. Meanwhile in Europe in '36, those assholes were in tough economic times and Germany looked to Hitler as a savior.

The people bought into FDR's crap, is all I'm saying. And the Republicans realky thought they had a good shot at winning in '36.

The point: The Anerican people can be dumb shits, sometimes, which is nothing new. The difference today is that people are even dumber.

More importantly, the "context" about how successful folks make use of bridges, fireman, etc. is just a long-winded way of saying "You Didn't Build That".

So even if he meant to say you didn't build the bridges, roads, and whatnot, the point is still "you didn't build that".

One of the greatest off-teleprompter moments of President Bush's time in office: Bullhorn Speech

http://bit.ly/aMTUuz

President Bush: Thank you all. I want you all to know -- it [bullhorn] can't go any louder -- I want you all to know that America today, America today is on bended knee, in prayer for the people whose lives were lost here, for the workers who work here, for the families who mourn. The nation stands with the good people of New York City and New Jersey and Connecticut as we mourn the loss of thousands of our citizens...

Rescue Worker: I can't hear you!

President Bush: I can hear you! I can hear you! The rest of the world hears you! And the people -- and the people who knocked these buildings down will hear all of us soon!

Rescue Workers: [Chanting] U.S.A.! U.S.A.! U.S.A.! U.S.A.! U.S.A.! U.S.A.! U.S.A.! U.S.A.!

==========

Serious question... has Obama ever said anything which has provoked a crowd responding with chants of 'USA!'? I know his idiot followers respond with "Oh-baaaah-maah!" a lot. But has he ever gotten a "USA! USA!" chant?
