| Obama Goes Off PrompterFor such a supposedly fantastic speaker, it's sure hard to bring to mind any outstanding Obama quotes. I remember nothing from his big post-racial race speech, his inaugural, his state of the union addresses. What I remember is when he goes off teleprompter. "Why can't I just eat my waffle?" "I've now been in 57 states -- I think one left to go." "The private sector is doing fine." "At a certain point, you've made enough money." "The Cambridge police acted stupidly." "I bowled a 129. It's like -- it was like Special Olympics, or something." "They get bitter, they cling to guns or religion or antipathy to people who aren't like them." "We're the country that built the Intercontinental Railroad." "I think when you spread the wealth around, it's good for everybody." "You didn't build that." So this, to me, is great news:President Obama is weaning himself off his teleprompter. At recent campaign events in Pennsylvania, Virginia and again Monday in Ohio, Obama spoke to crowds in high school gymnasiums and at crowded outdoor events without his teleprompter, instead using written notes. The difference is dramatic. Instead of turning in his characteristic manner from right to left and back again, reading from the two sloping, clear-plastic planes of his teleprompter, Obama has glanced down at pages in a binder on his podium.I have to believe that the writer wrote that "difference is dramatic" paragraph with tongue firmly planted in cheek. Instead of wagging his head back and forth, he bobs it up and down? Shyeah, dramatic. CommentsPosted by: Waffles, Cajun Carrot's dog at July 19, 2012 10:29 AM (UZQM8) 2
Him being a gifted speaker was always a lying myth promulgated by the MFM. The only people who believed that were Democrats and fools, but that is redundant.

It’s only good to go off the teleprompter if your opinion more closely resembles the feelings and principles of the people rather than your advisers. Obama’s go farther away than his advisers. Conversely, Romney’s opinions actually go closer to his base than his advisers opinions (thanks GOP insiders!). So his off prompter moments don’t hurt, but they help. Someone else went off prompter, and against his advisers: Reagan at the Berlin Wall. That worked out well. Posted by: Jay in Ames at July 19, 2012 10:33 AM (UEEex) 13

April 16, 2008, Democratic Presidential Debate moderated by Charlie Gibson
GIBSON: All right. You have, however, said you would favor an increase in the capital gains tax. As a matter of fact, you said on CNBC, and I quote, "I certainly would not go above what existed under Bill Clinton," which was 28 percent. It's now 15 percent. That's almost a doubling, if you went to 28 percent. But actually, Bill Clinton, in 1997, signed legislation that dropped the capital gains tax to 20 percent. OBAMA: Right. GIBSON: And George Bush has taken it down to 15 percent. OBAMA: Right. GIBSON: And in each instance, when the rate dropped, revenues from the tax increased; the government took in more money. And in the 1980s, when the tax was increased to 28 percent, the revenues went down. So why raise it at all, especially given the fact that 100 million people in this country own stock and would be affected? OBAMA: Well, Charlie, what I've said is that I would look at raising the capital gains tax for purposes of fairness. Posted by: Count de Monet at July 19, 2012 10:52 AM (BAS5M) 95

The 'Bamster has been talking about how his failure is the result of good policies without a good narrative. Given that 'Bammy is not only always wrong about everything but as wrong as wrong can be about everything (sorry Chris Matthews, somebody had to say it), I wonder if his "you didn't build that" speech wasn't an attempt to create aforesaid narrative.

"Right now . . . if a family care physician works with his or her patient to help them lose weight, modify diet, monitors whether they're taking their medications in a timely fashion, they might get reimbursed a pittance. But if that same diabetic ends up getting their foot amputated, that's 30,000, 40, 50,000 dollars immediately the surgeon is reimbursed.

I was wondering yesterday how FDR won reelection in 1936. The US was still in a depression but FDR won easily.
Part of the '36 strategy was to again run against Hoover as a scapegoat. The other reason why FDR won was the Republican candidates were all half-assed progressives. But still FDR managed to win reelection during a depression with shitty policies. Meanwhile in Europe in '36, those assholes were in tough economic times and Germany looked to Hitler as a savior. The people bought into FDR's crap, is all I'm saying. And the Republicans realky thought they had a good shot at winning in '36. The point: The Anerican people can be dumb shits, sometimes, which is nothing new. The difference today is that people are even dumber. Posted by: soothsayer at July 19, 2012 11:03 AM (SljXf) 118

FDR's economy sucked, but it was growing incrementally until after the election. It bottomed out in '37. And Alf Landon sucked. The federal prosecutor brought in to reform the embattled Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives in the aftermath of the Fast and Furious gun scandal distributed a videotaped message to employees this month warning there would be “consequences” for reporting wrongdoing outside their chain of command.
The video, obtained by the Washington Guardian, immediately raised alarm among agents in the field, members of Congress and whistleblower advocates. “Choices and consequences means simply that if you make poor choices, that if you don’t abide by the rules, that if you don’t respect the chain of command, if you don’t find the appropriate way to raise your concerns to your leadership, there will be consequences,” Acting Director B. Todd Jones told the employees in a video distributed July 9 by email and closed-circuit TV and obtained by the Washington Guardian. Posted by: E Howard Hunt at July 19, 2012 11:17 AM (e8kgV) 160

Obama is more than just stupid. I'll bet he's also brain damaged. The pattern of verbal gaffes suggests he's had an injury to the part of the brain controlling executive organization and language. Off prompter he sounds like my many female relatives who've had Alzheimer's. In his case, tho, iit's probably the effects of too many drugs on an already tentative brain function.

109 And the 'You Didn't Build That' is NOT a gaffe.Well, yes, as the Reason article in the sidebar notes, that's what leftists actually think. Elizabeth Warren said the same thing not that long ago.
--------- More importantly, the "context" about how successful folks make use of bridges, fireman, etc. is just a long-winded way of saying "You Didn't Build That". I think you folks miss the point of the "you didn't build that" thing. It's not just generating resentment of success, although that is key. The real important part of the whole thing, is to provides relief and comfort to those folks who never even tried in the first place.
