Happy, happy Thursday.

Each of these stories will probably end up full-blown posts today, but I'm passing them on now so you'll start your day with a smile.

First, the DNC is pulling its horse ads and expressing regret (though not an actual apology) for mocking Ann Romney's dressage horse, the one she trains with to help her MS. The DNC's horse preoccupation was petty and pointless and, in light of this decision, apparently hurting them more than it was helping. After Palin, Democrats got into the habit of attacking GOP women in politics, even when the woman in question isn't really in politics, but only married to a politician. Voters, though, they know the difference.

Second, TPM (I know) has highlights from Justice Scalia's interview last night on Piers Morgan. One thing of interest, Scalia says there's been no falling out with the Chief Justice.

Third, and most likely to put a big ol' grin on your face, the CBS News/New York Times poll of registered voters released last night is exceptionally good news for us. Sure, the top-line number is a statistical tie, Romney 47% to Obama 46%. But dig down and Obama is in deep doodoo. Among independents, Obama is deeply underwater, with only 28% saying they have a favorable impression versus 52% who say not favorable. Independents seem to slightly favor Romney, 32% to 31%. Among all voters, Obama's favorability went from a slightly bad 42%-45% in April to 36%-48%.

That's just astonishing. After a month of unanswered Obama attack ads, with the campaign uttering smear after smear, as Obama makes targeted panders on gay rights and immigration policy, Obama's favorability dropped six points!

On Monday, I wrote about the conservative voices claiming that Romney was blowing it by not "going on offense." I said they were having a crisis of confidence, that Obama's attacks were not working, and that Romney should stay the course. I'm feeling pretty good about that post now.

1 Good Morning Morons. Today is Thursday, July 19, 2012. On this day in 1553 Lady Jane Grey was deposed after only 9 days of reign. She was later executed for treason at the ripe old age of 16. It didn’t take much in those days to be executed for treason. Privy Council, hum???

34 "That's just astonishing. After a month of unanswered Obama attack ads, with the campaign uttering smear after smear, as Obama makes targeted panders on gay rights and immigration policy, Obama's favorability dropped six points!"

Not at all astonishing, nor even surprising. This is summer. The people who actually vote in elections (married folks in their 40's, 50's and 60's) are busy with summer stuff or they're desperately trying to find or retain employment and still are busy with summer stuff. They're not paying attention to the Obama attack machine.

The gay rights thing is a net negative for Obama. For every gay liberal reporter on the coasts who's swooning with glee over that pitch there are half a dozen working class folks in the heartland who are disgusted with it.

If you believe the media you'd think the entire country supported Obama's immigration pander. Well, the media has an agenda, not actual facts. The immigration issue is not so cut and dried. The other elephant in the room is that immigration is a giant red herring outside of a very few select states, three of which (CA, TX, NY) already are spoken for and one of which (Fla.) has a Latino demographic that's far different and far more conservative than the South and Central American demographic that's represented in NV, CO, NM and AZ.

Lastly, the final elephant in the room -- which for obvious reasons is not featured in the media -- is that the economy has been tanking over the past several weeks. The job market went from weak to in the crapper. Growth noticeably has slowed down. It's the stupidity, economy, not the media's memes that'll decide this election. Unless conservatives themselves give it away.

36 An IAF C-130 Hercules aircraft landed in Burgas, Bulgaria, Thursday morning in order to retrieve the Israelis injured in Wednesday's terror attack. By noon, the plane was en route to Israel, carrying 32 of the wounded.

Three of the Israelis, who suffered serious injuries, are hospitalized in Sofia. A second C-130, carrying Magen David Adom specialists landed in the Bulgarian capital in the early hours of the morning, in order to evaluate their condition and ascertain whether it is safe for them to fly.

A military source on the mission told Ynet that it includes military medical personnel, members of the Air Force 669 Search and Rescue Unit, Home Front Command officers and a cadre of IDF officers.

"We are working with MDA officials on the ground in order to facilitate the rapid transfer of the wounded to the planes and then to Israel," he said.

Meanwhile, a plane provided by the Bulgarians landed in Ben Gurion International Airport, carrying about 70 Israelis who escaped the attack

Some 24 ambulances and medical teams are making their way to the airport ahead of the plane's planned arrival in the early hours of the afternoon.

According to MDA, once in Israel, 11 of the wounded would be transferred to the Soroka University Medical Center in Beersheba, seven to Haemek Medical Center in Afula, six to Laniado Hospital in Netanya, two to Assaf Harofeh Medical Center in Zerifinm, Edith Wolfson Medical Center in Holon and Sourasky Medical Center in Tel Aviv each, and the remaining two will be admitted to Rambam Medical Center in Haifa and Western Galilee Hospital in Nahariya.

Israel moves Heaven and Earth to care for it's citizens and victims of Terror. And just for the record, Bulgaria has been a good Allie of Israel and a Good friend for many years and in no way should be blamed for this tragedy.

38 Good morning, 'rons and 'ronettes and thanks for the news, Gabe and Vic. You may call it a 'crisis of confidence,' Gabe, but as I said before, it's shell shock from McStain's abortion of a campaign. My confidence won't return until I hear the words "so help me God" from Romney just before he orders the Secret Service to arrest the dog-eating Indonesian Idiot for treason.

Well, a man can dream, can't he?

Anyway. . .today is the birthday of silent star Lily Damita, but nobody remembers her. They do remember her second husband, Errol Flynn, though. The two had ason, Sean Flynn, whodisappeared (and was most likely executed) in 1970 while working as a freelance photographer during the Cambodian civil war.

It's also the day in 1918 when Beverly Bayne married Francis X. Bushman. They were an extremely popular screen couple back in the day, seeing each other secretly becauseBushman was married to another woman. Bayne is mostly forgotten today; Bushman had a lease on life when he was cast as Messala the Roman opposite Ramon Navarro's Judah Ben-Hur in the 1927 film. He also, towards the end of his life, appeared in a Batman episode as a collector of silent films; I've searched, but can't find it on YouTube. He owned and lived onan extensive parcel of land on Hollywood Boulevard, which is now the site of Grauman's Chinese Theatre.

When Ben-Hur was remade in 1959, Charlton Heston had many difficulties learning how to drive a chariot, and said, "The only man in Hollywood who can drive a chariot is Francis X. Bushman - and he's too old!" (Parenthetically, I've always wondered why they didn't cast Bushman as Quintus Arrius in the remake; he would have been great in the role.)

Hope you all have a wonderful day.

Gabe,

Regarding the horse ads being pulled, I think Obama put his foot down. He doesn't want to open Michelle to ridicule, and it would be all to easy to contrast Ann Romney's dressage horse with Mooch's expensive vacations and shopping sprees.

The contrast: Ann Romney paid for her horse with her money. Mooch paid for her vacations with OUR money.

Don't misunderstand what I am saying Robert;s decision was awful and it may very well have been to various reasons cited and he may very well have changed his vote because of the venerability issue. But, no one justice has come out and publicly stated

48 Also worth noting is that the CBS/NYT's poll gives the Dem's an ABSURD +6.5 point advantage over Republicans.

As most will recall, the party id split betwixt D's & R's in 2008 WAS around 7 pts, but in 2010 it was an even 35/35 split.

So CBS/NYT's expects people to believe the Dem. party now enjoys the same advantage it did in 2008. This is simply delusional.

Gabriel is exactly right: these poll results are HORRIBLE for Team Obama and this is AFTER they gave the Dem's as big a weighting advantage in the sample as they dared.

PS - anybody else notice in weighting the samples the Dems went from unweighted Dems 341 to weighted Dems 350 a GAIN of +9, while they went from 304 unweighted Republicans to 274 weighted Republicans, a DROP of -30?

How in the world do they justify that?

Then in the weighting of the registered voters they go from 302 Dems unweighted to 292 weighted, a drop of only -10. Republican reg. voters go from 275 down to 237 after the weighting, a drop of -38.

Remember the Dem's actually STARTED in the weighting with a +9 gain.

With all these tricks they can't massage this damn thing to get the answers they want. If this is what they are forced into in July just to keep Obama afloat, the REAL fun is coming around the end of August. They'll likely go back to giving Dem's absurd double digit leads in the weighting just to keep Obama from drowning.

62 There are two "commie camps". Kinder Camp in upstate NY and Kinder Ring in MA. Kinder Ring used to be at the NY location but in the 50's there was a falling out with some wanting the camp to be just socialist, and others wanting to be totally communist. The communist faction moved the MA location, while the socialist faction stayed in upstate NY. The two camps reconciled their differences in the 70's and are now both full on commie.

The labor nominee sent her kids to the more hard core MA camp, which sent people to OWS. Great place for kids.

So, to sum up, the labor nominee sent their kids to the more hard-core commie version of commie camp. Super.

If forced to pick between the two, neither of which sounds all that desirable, I'd say the open civil war will probably be more favorable to our side. We're smarter, WAY better armed, and in the right. Most casualties will not be ours. And if the new leader for life isa Rightist who purges the Lefties and subjects them to a vigorous pogrom, so much the better. Then we could begin to undo the root problem - severe cultural damage and degradation that the Left has fashioned over the years. Without them choking the various institutions things could be put right again.

Whereas if we go the convention route, we maylose outright, or have to compromise away so much to keep a few core freedoms that in the end it will be self defeating. It will give the Left a legal fig leaf to cover them when they institute full blown dictatorship. Of course - this assumes that something comes out of it at all- I still don't see much that any 2/3 of the various state reps will agree on. We're too evenly split between right and left.

The best solution is a peaceful split up. We should divide up the territory and go our separate ways.

Yes, the old fogies (as opposed to mere curmudgeons) always complain about progress. I would say "Go look at Abilene, TX" but they got rid of their old fogy Mayor and City Council a couple of years ago and are experiencing a relative boom.

The fact is that the Commies don't really like anything about the "rural" lifestyle any more than the rest of us, but it's a lot easier to control people when they don't have as many modern conveniences: they have to be more concerned with day-to-day survival (or at least maintenance) than on pesky things like philosophy and politics.

That is because you can jot have either without a strong central government with almost absolute power. Sometimes that takes the form of an all powerful oligarchy such as congress and sometimes it takes the form of a one man fits all dictator such as FDR, Lenin, Hitler, and Mussolini.

This will continue to be a problem with Academia until Conservatives take it back over. And even then we'll have to have constant vigilance, because they sound (on paper) like they are equal. If the real world didn't intrude, or there really was no such thing as objective, knowable truth, they would be equal.

On paper communism sounds superior to capitalism. That's because, on paper, it ignores inconvenient things like finite resources and human nature.

On paper fascism sounds superior to capitalism. That's because, on paper, it ignores inconvenient things like competing national interests and human nature.

On paper anarchism sounds superior to capitalism. That's because, on paper, it ignores things like competing personal interests and (you guessed it) human nature.

Amonix closes North Las Vegas solar plant after 14 months, heavy federal subsidies

The Amonix solar manufacturing plant in North Las Vegas, subsidized by more than $20 million in federal tax credits and grants, has closed its 214,000-square-foot facility about a year after it opened.

Officials at Amonix headquarters in Seal Beach, Calif., have not responded to repeated calls for comment this week, but the company began selling equipment, from automated tooling systems to robotic welding cells, in an online auction Wednesday...

142 WASHINGTON (Reuters) - The number of Americans filing
new claims for unemployment benefits rebounded last week, pushing them
back to levels consistent with modest job growth after a seasonal quirk
caused a sharp drop the prior period.

Initial claims for state unemployment benefits
increased 34,000 to a seasonally adjusted 386,000, the Labor Department
said on Thursday. The prior week's figure was revised up to 352,000 from
the previously reported 350,000.

Unemployment claims up = modest job growth. FORWARD comrades

144 My mother also adored Heston. My wife and her were at a political rally with Mr. Heston and were getting their picture taken with them. My mother was fumbling with her purse and Heston said to her, "Let me position you". My 70 year old, 5'2" mother looks up beaming said,"Honey, you can position me any way you want." My wife is blushing blood red in the pic.

145 On Monday, I wrote about the conservative voices claiming that Romney was blowing it by not "going on offense." I said they were having a crisis of confidence, that Obama's attacks were not working, and that Romney should stay the course. I'm feeling pretty good about that post now.
Posted by Gabriel Malor at 06:59 AM Comments
I still disagree. In my view, Romney can't employ a purely reactive, counterpunchingstrategy as he did in the primaries and expect to beat the Chicago Machine. President Obama made a grave tactical error by moving Left rather than going for a Clintonesque play for the center, but the reason his class war-oriented Bain attacks didn't work wasn't because of anything Romney did; the Bain attacks didn't work because there wasn't any there there. The logic of the Bain attacks was too hard to follow, the details too convoluted. The Democrats forgot to keep it simple. Right now, the Obama campaign is probing, throwing out jabs, looking for an opening, and as long as they stay on the offensive, they set the tempo. That opening wasn't Bain and it isn't Ann Romney's horse, but if they're allowed to keep the initiative, they'll find that opening eventually.

151 "“I think, as I think the framers thought, that the more speech the better. Now, you are entitled to know where the speech is coming from. You know, information as to who contributed what. That’s something else.”

This is a bit of a concern...ok a lot of a concern. You AREN'T entitled to know where the speech is coming from; some of our founders wrote with Pen names to disguise who they really were.

I doubt Jefferson, Madison, et al, would agree you are entitled to know who donated what - that's a receipe for mischief: 'Oh you donated to Republicans last cycle, well the CEO is a staunch Democrat, you're fired', or how about the REAL incidences of SWATting we have seen?

Talk about chilling free speech...

157
"A certificate of debt, found in a regional archive, attests that
Mittenwalde lent Berlin 400 guilders on May 28 1562, to be repaid with
six percent interest per year.

According to Radio Berlin Brandenburg (RBB), the debt would amount
to 11,200 guilders today, which is roughly equivalent to 112 million euros ($136.79 million).

Adjusting for compound interest and inflation, the total debt now lies in the trillions, by RBB's estimates." http://tiny.cc/l77ohw

159 I wonder if the Russians and the Chinese would even veto a resolution to secure the chemical weapons storage facilities in Syria. Why don't we go for something simple like that, instead of trying for the whole enchilada of intervention and sanctions every time. Gives me the creeps to think of that stuff getting into the wrong hands. Maybe we will get some motion out of the braindead U.N. if the regime goes insane and uses that stuff against a population center.
