Now It Can Be Told: Ronald Reagan Was Prepared To Give The UK An Amphibious Assault Ship During The Falklands War

That's the story of then Secretary of the Navy (and current Romney naval adviser) John Lehman.

Had the UK lost one of it's two carriers, Reagan was prepared to give the UK the use of the USS Iwo Jima, an amphibious assault ship that could handle the Harrier jets the UK flew.

“We agreed that [Weinberger] would tell the President that we planned to handle all these requests routinely without going outside existing Navy channels,” Lehman said in a speech provided to the U.S. Naval Institute he made in Portsmouth, U.K. “We would ‘leave the State Department, except for [Secretary of State Al] Haig, out of it.’”

Reagan approved the request without hesitation and his instructions to Weinberger had been simple, “Give Maggie everything she needs to get on with it,” Lehman said in the speech.

Ah for the days of the Special Relationship.

One reason the State Department was to be cut out from such a transfer is that Haig was basically pushing for the UK to give in gracefully to the Argentinians.

John O'Sullivan writes about the internal deliberations of the Reagan team as seen through recently released NSC meeting minutes.

1. Reagan stuck to a distinction between sovereignty over the Falklands (on which Washington was neutral) and armed aggression to settle the question (on which Washington sided with Britain);

2. Within that distinction he allowed his Cabinet secretaries considerable leeway to pursue their own interpretations of U.S. policy;

3. Defense Secretary Cap Weinberger and CIA Deputy Director Bobby Inman used that leeway to push military and intelligence aid to Britain, and Secretary of State Haig used it to push Britain toward diplomatic concessions that amounted, in his own account to the NSC, to “camouflaged transfer of sovereignty.”

The US' "neutrality" during the war always seemed odd and was really de facto support for Argentina. While it was some what understandable in terms of hemispheric relations, it's nice to know based on Lehman's telling of it, that if push had come to shove we'd have been on the right side of history.

By 2020, nearly half of the crude oil America consumes will be produced

from the Middle East to North America “could almost be nonexistent,” the
Organization of Petroleum Exporting Countries recently predicted,
partly because more efficient car engines and a growing supply of
renewable fuel will help curb demand.

91 For some reason this made me think of PJ O'Rourke discussing going to Paraguay and noting that it was oddly full of Germans.

So's the American heartland.

92 "Retardation. Is that even a word?"

Holy shit, man.

You go, retarded dude!

94 The UK would have impressed the crew and munitions, just like they did to our sailors before the War of 1812.

Well then we'd just have taken military action against Brit's...hopefully they wouldn't have burned down Washington again.

HOLY SHIT! I was stationed onboard that ship then.

We'd just finished a year long yard period... so was in pretty dang good shape...

Never even heard a rumor about this...

96 Reminds me of a joke about the Argies: A bunch of Italians who speak Spanish, act French, and wish they were British.

JFKY - Just spitballing here, but the ship's company (ship drivers) would've remained US and a Brit air wing - if they had any assets left in the UK - would've embarked. Log support would've been a nightmare, though.

97 Wouldn't Nassau (LHA-4) have been more appropriate?

98 "You go, retarded dude!"

Hmm...no answer. Poverty of thought? It's a serious symptom of psychological disorder.

What say you, asshole?

This was the day of NATO ops... communications suites were compatable with a little bit of tweaking...

Radar suites could have been run by contractors... same with the Steam plant...

Probably would have taken off the SLQ32... guns were WWII vintage... only missles were Sea Sparrow... IFF was NATO compatable...

And just like the US Navy, they had more Harriers than they could embark on their existing Carriers...

The technology on that ship was pretty simple and antiquated... it wouldn't be like them trying to Man an Aegis cruiser or Burke..

100 The retarded asshole will not answer.

Victory is indeed sweet.

Probably a deployment consideration.... the Iwo was just coming out of theYards... so any conversion could have been done as we finished up... then refit... then workup....

True and valid. Just the thought that lending HM a ship named for the US' first overseas operation against her great-great-great-great-great uncle several time removed (the crown having passed sideways at least once since the German Georges) would have been ironic. In a good way.

103 Sempi == Semper

(My father spent some part of 1946/47 invading the Carolinas and Puerto Rico as an HA with the Marines)

104 I think the Iwo Jima would have been sheep-dipped to something like HMS Queen Elizabeth.

106 Current British military on or around the Falklands per Wiki: a destroyer or frigate on station, four RAF Typhoons permanently located, a rotating infantry company (regular), a local infantry company, a VC-10 for refueling...(of course, they don't report on what MI-6, SAS, SBS, SRR are doing about Argentina and the Falklands)

I'm assuming that even if the UK had aircraft carriers, the UK wouldn't be able to keep one off the islands all the time.

The question is can Argentina organize an effective attack against the Falklands before the British know enough to start sending reinforcements?

107 #50, they built a new Essex- it's LHD-2. Since we're naming carriers for hack politicians, all the WWII carrier names are going to helo-carrying gator-freighter baby flattops.

#70- the USNI article at the link says there was a plan for "civilian advisors" to aid in the transition. That Iwo (LPH-2) joined the fleet in '61, and was basically updated WWII tech in many respects. The Brits wouldn't have had an issue after a trainup period.

Hell, at the time there were still WWII Essex-class carriers in mothballs. USS Shangri-La was still in Philly through '84. She was a mess, but it could have handled Harriers no problem.

109 Drew, if you only knew whats still not confirmed, denied, discussed, alluded, ...commented in a post... ...just saying you are usually accurate in your posts but missing a lot in this post. Way more committed than the IJ. Falklands was a done deal from the get go. Email me in 2018.
