Politifact: Mitt Romney Claims Unemployment Fell to 4.7% During His Term. Official Government Data Says Unemployment Fell to 4.7% In His Term. We Rate Mitt Romney's Claim "Half True."

Wow.

Actually: Actually, I'm going to cut PolitiFact some slack here -- but only some, because I think they are being unclear about their rating.

Their headline says they're rating the "claim" (fact) that unemployment fell to 4.7% under Mitt Romney's governorship.

But then their article purports to rate an ad claiming this fall can be attributed to Mitt Romney.

I think it's much, much more defensible to say Mitt Romney's claim of ownership of this is "half true." Then you can add in questions about whether a governor really controls the state economy, and so on.

However, their headline says that the naked fact of 4.7% unemployment is Half-True.

They can either change the headline (the statement being reviewed) or the rating.

The claim "Mitt Romney suggests his stewardship propelled Massachusetts to 4.7% unemployment" could, I suppose, be fairly rated as "Half True."

But that's not what the headline says -- the headline says (for immediate use in Obama political ads) that the naked fact of 4.7% unemployment is half true.

This is like a movie reviewer deliberately inserting "THRILL RIDE OF THE SUMMER" just so the movie ad campaign will quote him.

Obama needs headlines like this to suggest that Mitt Romney is lying about the 4.7%. PolitiFact rides to his rescue, proving just such an ad-friendly headline.

But then the article changes the entire topic under discussion.

Clean up your act, PolitiFarce.

Politifacts schtick is to verify verifiable facts, not involve themselves in opinionated discussion. You can't say "Mitt Romney suggests his stewardship propelled Massachusetts

Great point and analog. Politifact must acknowledge that Obama killing Osama is only a "Half Truth" given Barack wasn't actually, physical doing it, nor even having operational control -- that having been handed over to Adm. McRaven.

Thus, the case can be made that Gov. Romney's "half-truth" of having reduced unemployment to 4.7% is at least as true as President Obama's claim of having killed Osama bin Laden...

a 'half truth' which I like to think of as a "half lie" or ¬ truth, the logical compliment of truth.

246 Front page of Yahoo:

People are usually reluctant to admit their real feelings in surveys, but there's no doubt that our experiences and our prejudices play a part in the way we vote. In order to figure out whether racial bais
affected Barack Obama's results in the 2008 presidential election, Seth
Stephens-Davidowitz, a doctoral candidate in economics at Harvard
University, passed over easy-to-manipulate surveys and looked at data
from another source: online searches.

"You may have typed things into Google that you would hesitate to admit in polite company," he writes in a New York Times article "I certainly have. The majority of Americans have as well: We Google the word 'porn' more often than the word 'weather'."

"The results imply that, relative to the most racially tolerant areas in
the United States, prejudice cost Obama between 3.1 percentage points
and 5.0 percentage points of the national popular vote,"
Stephens-Davidowitz points out in his study. "This implies racial animus
gave Obama's opponent roughly the equivalent of a home-state advantage
country-wide."

302 287 Whats with all the McCain interviews? Is FOX trying to re-balance Romneys chances by brining in that dolt as a spokesman? Hey McCain, STFU also!

Posted by: Up With People! at June 11, 2012 06:14 PM (iYvMQ)
----------

Perhaps McCain is about to launch a new book...."Lessons in Losing".

It is my hope, that whatever advice McCain gives to Romney....Romney turns around and does exactly the opposite.

303 I believe this issue came up the other day when Ace was agonizing over the issue of anger, and how it was sinful.

I hope Ace reads this and posts his take (or judgement) on the issue.
It's about an angry father.
"Justified", IMO.

305 Speaking of Romney

"I don't know what he meant, I only know what he said. He said the private sector is doing fine and that's not the case. I mean, you need time lapse photography to detect any movement in this slow-growing economy," Romney senior Eric Fehrnstrom told MSNBC's Andrea Mitchell on Monday afternoon.

That's a good 1: "you need time lapse photography to detect any movement in this slow-growing economy"

That must have burned Mitchell's ass. Horrible, horrilble woman that she is

306 >>>It's about an angry father.

If he had been able to control his temper in that situation, he'd be up for canonization.

So... it is only half true. Does that mean the rate was half of 4.7? 2.35% under Romney? Wowee! That should be a headline.
If you speak in Newspeak... others will think in Newspeak.

308 I fought these bozos for 2 months over Obama's use of signing statements. I had video evidence of his promise not to use them, and video evidence of him using them just after the election. They finally relented, but only rated it a *compromise*. They are NOT non-partisan.

310 Regarding your update:

Obama claims he created 4.3 million jobs.

Would Politifact also call this a half-truth?

No, they wouldn't.

313 MAD Magazine explained it decades ago.

The movie critic writes, "This was the worst movie I've seen in the last five years. When it was over, I went to the projection room, knocked the projectionist out and set the film on fire. I felt so good watching it burn to a crisp!"

What the ad for the movies quotes:
"I felt so good watching it..!"

314 Check the Politifact right under that one.

Romney said he outsourced call center jobs to India.

Citibank outsourced call center jobs to India, not Romney. Romney just chose not to BAN the process from being allowed.

Therefore... also HALF TRUE?

Romney, in PolitiFact's eyes he gets half the credit for good things done as Governor, and half credit for bad things done buy ANY COMPANY IN THE STATE while he was Governor.

I don't see giving them credit for shit after that.

316 I dunno--this actually kind of frightens me. When you have so much disconnect that you can do this without any cognitive dissonance....this is not Sgt. Shultz material, this is pathological. I can see people that lap this up having no difficulty calling for the establishment of martial law if things don't go their way, and I HATE conspiracy theories.

But this makes that crap sound plausible.

Off to clean the bang-bang stick again.
