Head Injuries and Collision Sports (tmi3rd)

Hi, Morons…
So, in the news, we’ve had the death of former San Diego Chargers LB Junior Seau by suicide. He is the eighth member of the 1994 San Diego Chargers football team (made a Super Bowl run) to die.

Seau’s is the only death from this group by suicide- there were deaths by plane crash, lightning strike, and natural causes.

Especially given the press that concussions and Chronic Traumatic Encephalopathy (CTE, or the atrophy of brain tissue as a result of concussions) has had lately in the press, there was an immediate rush to judgment by the media that Seau’s death was because of CTE, Slate is hosting a debate as to whether football should be banned, and ESPN is wringing its hands about “the tawdry culture of football” (links are below).

I apologize in advance for the length of this- there wasn't any good way to do this in a short version.

Former Raiders WR Tim Brown jumped into the fray to tap the brakes on that notion. He was friends with Seau, and he pointed out in an interview that there was more going on in Seau’s life than CTE, and that he felt like Seau was having a hard time adjusting to life without football every day.

So what are we seeing right now from the media and from the collision sports industry?

Well, first of all, there’s no helmet made or makeable that’s going to give you complete protection from concussions. Concussion has no set definition medically, but is accepted as trauma to the brain, not always from impact. You can get concussed from being hit in the head (no, really!), but you can also get a concussion from whiplash injuries. The brain moves around in the skull hard enough to compress or bruise it, and voila, you’ve got a concussion.

One couldn’t even really prevent whiplash concussion injuries by securing the spine, and that’s neither practical nor really possible. You’d have to basically immobilize the spine to prevent any sort of torque along it, and you don’t need me to tell you how much that would screw things up. Tack onto that that you have guys in excess of six feet tall and 200-300 pounds hitting each other at moving-car type speeds, and the risks are apparent. The other thing is, if you hit your head on a hard surface (falling on ice, or onto the concrete beneath FieldTurf), you’re still moving fast enough to knock your brain around.

The NHL (quietly leading the Big Four Sports in concussion research) and the NFL (leading the Big Four in visibility) are underwriting lots of research into various types of concussions and what causes them. Furthering that, the NHL has sort of jumped ahead in terms of concussion treatment, including requiring evaluation in a “quiet room”, and so forth. The response is far from perfect, but they’re the leading edge of treatment for concussions at the moment.

In the meantime, though, there’s a crusade going on in the media that really ramped up with the New Orleans Saints’ bounty scandal, and is peaking yet again with Seau’s death. You had initial calls for former Saints defensive coordinator Gregg Williams to be banned from the sport for life (and those calls have mysteriously disappeared, by the way), and you had this incredibly crappy column from ESPN’s Howard Bryant talking about the game being too violent for today’s culture. Equally absurd is the hand-wringing from Grantland’s Charles P. Pierce (who writes also for NPR) in this piece.

What is this?

I asked a few NFLers and a couple of Arena Leaguers what they thought about this (off the record, because there are legal considerations in both directions), and the responses were largely something to this effect: Football is a physical sport, and hard hits are a part of the game. We know quite well how badly we can be hurt long-term by playing football at this level, and nobody’s making us play the game we love.

So I asked some of my friends who do sports journalism what they thought. There were two distinct camps in this group. The ones who had actually played sports of any form largely were of the opinion “Sure, you keep researching the effects of this, but you can’t take the serious physical play out of the game without changing the game in ways that folks aren’t going to want to watch.”
Then you get to the ones who’d never played any sports, but somehow wound up in sports journalism. They objected to the barbarism of hitting people in the first place. “You couldn’t get away with doing this on the street; why should it be legal within the field of play?”

When pressed, these folks had had hard times at the hands of the athletes they’d grown up with, and were never in a position to stand their ground against their athlete adversaries. I heard a great desire for revenge in this group of people- once again, bathing in the emo-prog identification by victimhood.

So here, yet again, we see another manifestation of the nanny-state-ophiles… they can’t compete with these folks, so they want to see them eradicated. There are all sorts of subtexts to it, as well… “Jocks are too stupid to know what they’re getting into…”, “These kids who grow up in the ‘hood have no other choices in life, so they have to go beat their brains in just to have a chance…”, “The evil corporate NFL never told them how badly they could get hurt playing this barbaric game…”, blah blah blah… you could make a hell of a Twitter hashtag game out of it.

These are the same idiots who think that soccer is a non-violent game. Chelsea’s Petr Cech (goalkeeper) wears a soft rugby helmet when he plays because he sustained a depressed skull fracture from taking a knee to the head.

Anyway, you get the idea… it’s certainly in both sports’ best interests to make sure that its players are kept as safe as possible. USA Hockey, in conjunction with Hockey Canada, has made prevention of both concussions and spinal injuries key points of focus in coaching. The websites of the two organizations have tons of information and coaching tips about not hitting people from behind, putting STOP signs on the back of jerseys, and players KEEPING THEIR HEADS UP (skating with your head down is a sure way to get knocked out).

It is widely agreed in football that we’re seeing guys lead with their heads when they tackle (the Steelers’ James Harrison keeps getting fined for it, fairly or unfairly), and that is certainly a contributor to head injuries. As many of you who have played remember, a good form tackle involves keeping your head up, getting a hold of the other guy’s legs, lifting him up, and driving through him. USA Football is now working on coaching form tackling back into the game.

Unsurprisingly, I want kids playing collision sports like football and hockey. Both sports were very good to me, and taught me a lot of key life lessons. With the nanny-state crew out there, they seem unwilling to let the sports police themselves, or look out for their own best interests. This is a battle we’ll be fighting throughout the 21st century.

When it comes down to it, it’s incumbent upon me as a hockey player to play smart and look out for my own best interests. As a parent and as a coach, it’s my responsibility to monitor my children and keep them properly coached in how to take care of themselves. With the professional athletes I know, the attitude seems to be similar- they’re smart enough to make informed decisions in their own best interests and about their future.

9 My kid started playing football when he was 9 and played clear up through his first year of college when he got deployed. He could have started at age eight but I was too chicken to let him. Big mistake on my part. Football was the third best thing that ever happened to him.

I credit football with keeping my son alive. He played quarterback. To play quarterback you have to have a good head on you shoulders, be able to quickly size up the field, scan your players and their positions, see various scenarios and make a quick decision. These are the very same qualities that kept him alive during two tours in Iraq.

He also never once got injured in football. Baseball - he injured his rotator cuff but football - nada.

Football makes good men.

17 The irritating thing to me is how the players, via their union, want to be on both sides of this. They want more compensation (and less games), but they also expect to not be punished when they make dirty hits. So eff them.

And even the old timers. Jeezus, if the current well-off players and former players can't step up and take care of their own, what the heck does that say about them?

I enjoy the physicality of both football and hockey (the checks not the fights, I find those boring). It'll be a shame to neuter those games, particularly when sports like boxing and that UFC stuff are still going on.

22 For once I am a conspiracy nut:

All part of a plan to make us "global" and play soccer.

Bit me, wusstards.

No, there should never be a bounty. Good sportsmanship demands no less.

There are already helmets that can help. And mouthpieces help, too. There need to a few players who step forward and start wearing the right stuff and wearing the stuff right and some of the concussions will be avoided. However, physics is a bitch and there is no getting around the fact that players are bigger and stronger now--and the game is more complex. There are simply more chances for high impacts. Some of the changes the NFL has made in its rules are already having an effect. Receivers can damn near run unimpeded across the middle now, so scoring is and will be increasingly up. The running game is now less important. I'm also pretty sure that in a couple of years, we're not going to see kickoffs any longer.

Having said that, the mewling coming from some corners is almost comical. If you think what the Saints did to Brett Favre was bad, I'd like to see someone parade through Pittsburgh or Green Bay or Tuscaloosa and call for a ban.

42 My son plays high school football and got two concusions last year. One was minor, in a pre-season scrimmage against his teamates, which held him out for two weeks until they were sure he was fine.

The second was pretty scary and serious. He was badly disoriented for several hours (loss of memory for the whole game, etc.)and took weeks to fully recover. There was no dirty play involved, just hard hitting and the second time he got knocked down in a running play by a halfback 60 lb heavier than he was (my son was 145 last fall as a freshman, the running back was 205).

Teams have to watch out for their players and hold them out when the get a concussion. The doctor who treated my son told him that getting another severe concussion after the first severe concussion can be either crippling or fatal. Playing too soon after a diagnosed concussion can be terribly unhealthy for the player at any level. You can't neuter the game, but you must protect the player who is hurt and allow him to completely recover before the risk of another head injury. The players in the NFL are so valuable to their teams, both for their skills and their contracts, the teams get conflicted about allowing a recovering player to get back into the game too soon.

86 The current theory, as I understand it (and I could be wrong) is that brain trauma shakes and stretches the brain. The brain squishes and stretches like jello and as a result some small % of the neurons dendrites and axons get stretched to the point of snapping, severing connections within the brain, often causing that neuron to die.

We all lose neurons as we age. The redundancy of the brain and neuron connections mean we can still functions will some % of neurons and connections lost.

Suffering head trauma and concussions appears to be, for some people, killing a greater % of neurons at a younger age.

So when these people hit middle age and start suffering age-related neuron loss, they have less redundancy. So they experience early onset dementia.

People with higher IQs who lead mentally stimulating lives have higher neural connections than dumber people and show greater resistance to dementia.

And where you lose neurons determines the symptoms you have. Neuron loss in some regions is much more devastating than others. Which is why some people with dementia can be happy, but forgetful, while others become angry and violent.

That's my current understanding. I am not an expert at all. I could well be wrong. There are huge unknowns and hopefully more research will determine exactly what is happening and find ways to repair and reverse the damage.

A while back I read an SI article about the post-football life of one of the greatest ever, Walter Payton, "Sweetness." Afterward, I wished that I hadn't read it because it shed light on a deeply imperfect man who quite simply couldn't bear life without football and the glory it brings.

The journey of a pro athlete must be an emotional roller coaster. Imagine being coached up through high school, college, and then spending more than a decade in the pros with your every move scrutinized, with fans cheering one minute and jeering the next, with more money in the bank than all your ancestors have ever earned, and suddenly....poof!...it's over.

It's no surprise that some cannot handle the loss.

116 The WWE guys problems probably are do much more to head trauma than steroids.

One problem of cognitive decline is that it leads to impulsive behavior -- which makes drug and alcohol abuse much more likely.

There are psych studies that can predict future drug usage in pre-school age kids. They leave some candy out and tell the kid if they wait 5 minutes and don't eat the candy then they'll get 2x as much when the teacher comes back. Some kids just can't resist. And those kids are much more likely to abuse drugs and commit crimes when they grow up.

Steroids really aren't that dangerous. The WWE guys mainly die from drug and alcohol abuse, and I think the head trauma is a pretty direct cause of that.

Bodybuilders harm themselves more from the diuretics they take to lose water than the steroids to gain muscle. The super shredded look is not especially healthy.

As somebody who actually worked in professional sports, most of this hysteria over player suicides is just that, hysteria.

First of all, men are 4 times more likely to commit suicide than women. Secondly, once men get into their twenties the rate of suicide increases, peaking when they get to their 40's, dropping, then rising again in their 60's. Third, alcohol and/or drugs seem to play a part in them.
They probably commit suicide for the same reasons that other men in their age groups do: depression, job loss, financial problems, drug/alcohol abuse.http://www.suicide.org/suicide-statistics.html#2005

I'm about as libertarian as they come and hate nanny state BS, but even I'm beginning to wonder if that's a good idea. Not because of 'the violence', but because it just seems like a bad idea to have you people with developing bodies wailing on each other. I'm 31 and several people I went to high school with are fucked up in some fashion from playing football. Stuff like that only tends to get worse as you age.

Also, the scandal in the NFL isn't something to be sneezed at. Offering bounties to players to severely injure opposing players is downright evil and contrary to everything that is decent in sports. Anyone who does that at a professional level should be banned for like IMHO. It's absurd to ban a player for betting or taking steroids but not for intentional trying to destroy the ACL or another player to earn 10 grand.

154 Also, the scandal in the NFL isn't something to be sneezed at. Offering
bounties to players to severely injure opposing players is downright
evil and contrary to everything that is decent in sports. Anyone who
does that at a professional level should be banned for like IMHO. It's
absurd to ban a player for betting or taking steroids but not for
intentional trying to destroy the ACL or another player to earn 10
grand.

I love hard-hitting football but would like to kick those involved in the bounty hunting in the fucking nuts.

To willingly, worse, for pay, seek to injure another human being...to cripple him, IS barbaric.

Suspending the players for a few games is horseshit.

156 "It is widely agreed in football that we’re seeing guys lead with their
heads when they tackle (the Steelers’ James Harrison keeps getting fined
for it, fairly or unfairly), and that is certainly a contributor to
head injuries. As many of you who have played remember, a good form
tackle involves keeping your head up, getting a hold of the other guy’s
legs, lifting him up, and driving through him. USA Football is now
working on coaching form tackling back into the game."

This. The head wasn't always a weapon. Back in the '70s, good youth football leagues taught good form tackling (and blocking) as a religion; I played in one in Akron, Ohio. The primary concern at the time was spinal injuries, because we were pencil-necked kids, but the coaches didn't want us getting our bells rung on a regular basis either.

The size, strength, and speed of the players (I think) contributed to the change in technique. Historically the best athletes went to the offense, when 2-platoon came into vogue. Guy like Earl Campbell, you form tackle him and he might rip your arms off with his thighs (exaggerate to make a point). So defenders started trying to blow up guys instead -- dump more kinetic energy into him than he does into you. Any means available (veering into speculation, a little).

I would love to see proper technique come back. Football and hockey are my favorite sports, and I want to enjoy them for a long time to come.

Claiming to be “one of the most skilled snipers of his era,” Brian Leonard Creekmur has everything you would expect of a retired Navy SEAL. Memorabilia and old uniforms decorate his home, and he even possesses what seem to be the photos and military discharge papers to prove his claim.

Creekmur even managed to fool CNN‘s Soledad O’Brien, it seems, after he tweeted about the all death he witnessed in combat and she re-tweeted to her 140,000+ followers. More significantly, The Daily Mail reports that Creekmur was regularly in contact with the network to offer his so-called expertise on various news stories.

But after a month-long investigation by News Channel 3, following a tip by a suspicious woman Creekmur was courting on the internet, the man has been outed as a giant fraud.

170 The "pros" may understand fully the risk, even if they don't understand the science behind the risk. And, as you note, most if not all of them accept those risk. Yet, at the end of it all, plaintiff"s attorneys will insure those same players will be listed in the "et al" on the cascade of lawsuits we'll see over the next 10 years.

If you could stop Seau at the moment before he pulled the trigger, and offer him the opportunity to go back in time, knowing the ending before the beginning, I'd venture to say he'd still strap the helmet on at age 8 or whenever he first played.

Having said all of that, the NFL died st the moment Seau did. It won't matter if his death actually had nothing to do with CTE. It will likely take some time, but the peak has been reached and the only thing left to determine is how precipitous the fall.

174 I coached youth football for 8 years and tackling technique was the lynchpin of everything we did. We would not let kids tackle with their head down and launching themselves for a missile tackle was straight out. If any of our kids broke form we would sit them down until they saw the light. My biggest problem was the parents of these kids. Their MVP's were not meant to sit on the bench doncha know. Drove me nuts. Changing over to a soft helmet would encourage better form and also be good for player safety.

Because the gear limits the immediate effects of bad form or a really hard hit, players think (naturally) that they're protected while making such hits, when they're really just hiding the damage.

Modern running shoes do much the same thing: encourage bad form by eliminating the instant feedback (pain) you body would normally send to say "hey, that hurts, retard, knock it off!"

long newyorker quote

“So the Golden Gate was the spot. I’d heard that the water
just sweeps you under.” On the bridge, Baldwin counted to ten and stayed
frozen. He counted to ten again, then vaulted over. “I still see my
hands coming off the railing,” he said. As he crossed the chord in
flight, Baldwin recalls, “I instantly realized that everything in my
life that I’d thought was unfixable was totally fixable—except for
having just jumped.”

Kevin Hines was eighteen when he took a municipal bus to the bridge
one day in September, 2000. After treating himself to a last meal of
Starbursts and Skittles, he paced back and forth and sobbed on the
bridge walkway for half an hour. No one asked him what was wrong. A
beautiful German tourist approached, handed him her camera, and asked
him to take her picture, which he did. “I was like, ‘Fuck this, nobody
cares,’ ” he told me. “So I jumped.” But after he crossed the chord, he
recalls, “My first thought was What the hell did I just do? I don’t want
to die.”

its the liberalism that tries to show us how "un-cultured" we are as in regards to soccer. dont believe me? look at the spike in soccer games being shown on ESPN etc to go along with all the negative news concerning the NFL.

euro-liberalism wants us to entrench ourselves into "the world sport" and if we just did...theyd leave football alone.

228 I don't think the head trauma was the cause of his depression. It may not even have contributed to it. But if your brain is not working and you ARE depressed, how the fuck is reading the Bible (as suggested by Dr. Lowandslow) supposed to keep you from killing yourself? What part of "his brain may not have been functional" do some of you not get?

This isn't about making Seau a hero or "excusing" his actions. The latter is for God to decide. But it is tragic, imo, when anyone throws their life away. And it is terrible for his surviving family, especially his mom. Out of compassion for her, I would think folks would hold off on being so eager to judge her son.

234 We judge everyone on their character or lack of it everyday, anyone that says they don't is lying. We don't get to make the final judgement but this horseshit that judging people based on their actions is un-Christian is just that, horseshit. That what's makes our culture, he set the boundaries of right and wrong, what's acceptable behavior and what's not. Liberalism is all about breaking down those boundaries and some of you have bought into it big time.

235 i never really played sports and i disagree with the flippant comments about people that think violent sports should not be allowed. First, i never liked violent sports because i got enough violence at home and since the people hitting me were much bigger, rolling into a ball was all i could do. I still do not like violence.

but,... i learned that violence is not a choice we make in life, it is a choice made by others and our reaction has to be more than rolling into a ball when the person hitting you is not limited by the etiquette not getting blood on the kitchen floor. I mean this literally, and figuratively; on a personal level, and on a national level as it relates to foreign aggressors.

I still don't like violent sports, but i think they are good and necessary (for boys especially) to learn not to roll into a ball.

I think liberals roll into a ball figuratively when faced with any aggression. Coworker wants to out compete your for a promotion -- join a union where you are protected. Competing firm develops a new product that will shutter your most profitable division --- hire a lobbyist to make it illegal. Boss is an a-hole -- go on the check. Spouse is a jerk -- get a divorce.

Life is full of hard choices, and one of them is to stand your ground and take the hit. Then get up and hit back with everything you have left.

242 LOLz @ Breitbart. Turns out Warren isn't even 1/32 Cherokee. That "half-Cherokee" x-grandfather, Preston Crawford, may not ever have even claimed to be half-Cherokee; but he had a brother - William - who claimed that their mum was Cherokee. So that's where the family lore comes from; except that William was the only one of the two to raise this to government attention. Either Preston kept this within the family or else "uncle William" dropped by Preston's home to deliver the sittingbullshit to his impressionable nephews.

But wait! Preston's mum listed herself as "white", and her father was... a SWEDE.

So Warren is 1/64 Indian at most, but most likely not Indian at all. If any of her ancestors, male or female, ever had Cherokee in them it was because that Cherokee nailed him or her in the butt.

But if Preston told the same fibs his brother did, then Warren is 1/32 PATHOLOGICAL LIAR. So there's that.

Yeah, this shouldn't be that difficult. The helmets are causing the head injuries. You ever notice when a boxer gets in a bar fight he break his knuckles?

They need to gradually decrease the amount of padding so the players and lower levels adjust over time. If it's done at the right pace head injuries will be very rare and the game won't suffer.

Broken teeth and noses? yeah, we'll see a lot more of those. I guess that's the question. Is this pussy ass culture of ours okay with broken noses or would it prefer we only play touch football?

I didn't get that impression, at all.

I think it should be remembered that it is important that suicide be looked down on by all society. It should be looked at as one of the worst things a person can do that is not an attack on another. Suicide, whether you have feelings for the situation or not, should never be given any excuse by anyone - no matter how great the person was who committed suicide.

This is tough love and it is the only kind that should be dealt to the "reasoning" of the suicide. Unless someone wants to be telling kids, "Sure, suicide is fine, if things are terrible, ...". When someone contemplates suicide, they should know that it is an offense to existence. They can still do it. No one can stop someone who really wants to kill himself - it's just too easy to do. But a sane and decent society would never look to mitigate the terrible effects that accepting suicide in any way would have. It degrades society and allows nihilism to creep in.

It is weak, and it is selfish. My uncle was schizophrenic and he killed himself while inside a mental institution. I don't blame him because he had no concept of reality, but I saw what his suicide did to my grandparents.

If you have the mental capacity to understand that there aren't any little green men telling you to stab your room mate, and you decide to kill yourself, you are a selfish jerk.

You will absolutely destroy everyone around you. Your mother will refuse to get out of the car at your funeral because she can't stand to see her little boy put into the ground. If anyone is thinking that the world is better off without them, he's wrong. Putting a bullet in yourself does more damage to your loved ones than if you put it in them instead.

While the act itself should be looked down upon, so should the act of judging a man who at his most desperate moment, committed an almost unspeakable act. People in their right mind do not put a bullet through their chest.

or others might see it as you have treated another , measure for measure etc..
anyway, I will presume an idea if i do not fully understand a persons choice to kill themselves that i have to go to the next thought which might be because i cannot fully understand the despair or illness that one might have felt and leave it to be measured by the deeds of his life ?

I have no idea if Seau believed in Jesus or not. I believe that his commiting suicide doesn't factor in his eternal destination. Its whether he believed that Jesus died for his sins (John 3:15-17). When Jesus was at the Cross he had 2 criminals on either side of him. One asked Jesus to remember him, the other mocked him. Oneisspending eternity with Jesus, the other isn't. Neither deserved salvation. None ofus do. But God loves us so he sent hisSon to be the ultimate sacrifice for our sins. Wow, I do ramble so I'll quit. I missed that part. But if the person is dead (by his own choice) then I don't think the insult is going to hurt him. And it should be understood that normal people have every right to be totally disgusted by suicide, no matter the circumstances. You can't give the suicidal person the benefit of the doubt and then come down on someone commenting about it (no matter the terms) when suicide is unacceptable to our society and should remain totally so.

I didn't know anything about Seau or the situation, but to me it just doesn't really matter. It is the unacceptable nature of suicide that must remain. THAT is the most important point - to me.

30 years later, at my grandmother's funeral, my grandfather stopped to put flowers on my uncle's grave. "The poor little thing," he said "he was only 23." Then he quietly walked away crying.

That is the damage that you will do. The pain that you cause people you don't even realize care about you will last forever.

That is why suicide must be forever shunned. I won't even get into the damage that you do to yourself and your soul by choosing to take your life. It should be enough to know that you will cause a black hole that will suck in everyone who ever cared about you.

Well done. I have had three friend kill themselves, two because of constant pain for injuries, which is sort of OK. One on his 21 birthday for no damn reason that anyone to this day, 40 years later, can figure out.

It is selfish and rude. Everyone gets depressed, but you can not let your family or friends, or GOD down.

Well, no theologian, but the following are on point:

Mark 3:28-29
Corinthians 6:19-20
1 Corinthians 3:17

Then of course the 6th commandment, which tells us though shall not murder. This of course applies to ourselves as well.

So it seems pretty clear that according to the Bible our lives are not our own but a gift from God, and not one we are supposed to waste.

Not sure if that helps or not, I hope so.

353 As a Catholic, I was told that suicide fell under the "Thou shalt not do murder" commandment--i.e., murdering yourself.

The benefit of the fear of hell was that it made suicide not an option--as much as a person might feel they're suffering, if they believe that suffering _won't_ be ended by them killing themselves, they may find a way to help themselves.

I don't know if suicides actually do go to hell, and it's not for me to judge. As for people with genuine terrible mental illness or intractable physical pain, that may not stop them. It may, however, stop an idiot emo teenager who doesn't know that mental anguish is temporary and there's more to life than what the douchebags in high school say.

People do that every day, probably every hour, without ever committing suicide.
That's the definition of sin - doing your own will contrary to the laws of God. Suicide, while a sin and a horrible insult to God and those in one's life, is a sin. However, the Bible does not teach that it is an irredeemable sin that sentences one to everlasting separation from God. That comes from Church tradition, not specifcally Biblical teaching. For those who follow Christian traditions that are not based on Catholic doctrine, this view of suicide as the unforgivable sin is not taught. At least in my church background.

379 To those of you who think God absolutely condemns suicide, I'd ask that you think about this.

I don't propose to know what God thinks. I also know that as the imperfect father that I am I can't imagine anything one of my children could ever do that would make me stop loving them.

So if God is a perfect Father, I guess he could forgive us nearly anything. I think it's pretty well spelled out in scripture.

God doesn't condemn us - we condemn ourselves. God doesn't turn from us, we turn from Him.

Again, no theologian here, but I happen to believe that the key here isn't that God can or will forgive us - personally I think the whole point of the crucifixion was to prove to all of mankind exactly this point. That God could forgive us of anything. The key I think is that turning from God is a conscience, deliberate act on our part and that even in death we are given the chance to accept Him and turn back.

Again, just my two cents. YMMV.

NOTHING separates you from the love of God. Personally, I cannot fully comprehend this. Because Hitler was a christian and forgiven by the catholic church. 395 Because Hitler was a christian and forgiven by the catholic church.

Umm..hmm.. might want to research that a whole lot more. Hitler gave Christianity some lip service in a speech or two, trying to get political support. That was pretty much it. Mostly he was a narcissistic amphetamine junkie with delusions of grandeur.

He was not a practicing catholic. That is total bunk and misinformation. Nor did the Catholic church ever assist him, in fact the exact opposite was true. Look up the words of Albert Einstein or Golda Meir if you don't believe me. The Catholic Church actually put itself at tremendous risk helping to smuggle Jews out of occupied Europe. Hitler also killed close to a million Catholics in his death camps.

So no, not a Catholic myself - but I really get irritated when people distort history.

Exactly. If someone considered....even if they held the gun in their hand...and decided not to do it, then they had a clearer mind and greater will and/or suffered lesser despair than the one who actually pulls the trigger. Therefore, they do NOT know what it's like to be in their shoes.

It's not the act as much as what the act represents, as your final earthly act you are destroying God's gift and rejecting Christ and salvation. When we go against God's will in other ways we aren't exactly giving him the ultimate finger the way suicide does.

425 There are theologians that think that Jesus' death on the cross reconciled humans with God and that all sins, past, present and future are forgiven. Richard John Neuhaus was one.

In my gut I understand that there is no redemption without repentance.

Some think that you can repent after you are dead. I am not buying that either.

Suicides are in deep trouble, if I am not mistaken. If you cannot repent after death, and you kill yourself, logic dictates the result.

428 This is what solves the problem. Kinda like a mix between rugby and aussie rules football. Take the weapon away and you can't use the weapon. Take the hard helmets away and use a soft helmet for whn players bank their heads on the ground or get mugged by a limb. If you hit someone above the head you shall be ejected and fined. Take the hard "pads" away and make them real pads. If you take the hard plastic off these guys there would be less injury. No one would lead with the head or use their pads to injure another player unless they want to get hurt themselves . You don't hear of concussions in rug y or Aussie football because they use their bodies to tackle. The kicker cannot be touched and he will not allowed to tackle. Shit give the mixing team 13 players and the kicker is just that a kicker. No fake punts/ kicks by a kicker. Problem solved. It wi be men tackling men and pussies using their equipment to hurt the other player. Fuck the ray Lewis like killers.

446 "Equally absurd is the hand-wringing from Grantland’s Charles P. Pierce (who writes also for NPR) in this piece."

Ahem.

First, as to name-calling: Pierce isn't "Grantland's"; he writes a daily for Esquire on politics (containing lanolin, riboflavin & huge liberal flames of heck), & only once in a blue moon gets asked to contribute to Grantland (which puts him alongside about eleventy-thousand other writers from all over the political zoo & otherwise, & mostly not at all, being that sports writing tends to be mostly politically oblivous.

Second, Pierce also doesn't "writes for NPR" (with all the cheese-eating surrender monkey implications that 'information' presumably holds). Instead, he shows up every Saturday in a 5 minute guest spot on a sports show out of Bahstin called Only A Game, in which his role is basically Amuse Oreilles (like Amuse Bouche only on radio) with Chuckles, which has the all the rock 'em-sock 'em non-stop LMAOs of a typical Readers Digest "humor" section (& no politics; look, you don't have to trust me: go check the online archive for yourself; Pierce sounds right of host, but we only get to judge that on the basis that what the host* calls "football", with that sneering elistism we all know, actual people, including Pierce. call "soccer".

Third, & to the point, it ain't "hand-wringing" when a writer calls for whatever drastiocity necessary, including prohibiting oblong ball. Hand-wringing is like, Oh lawdy me ain' it all teddible whattawe gonna do; banning shit is radical.
