| Friday Night ONT [Ben]Before he absconded with a bottle of whiskey and a single sock, CDR-M informed me that today is Star Wars Day. I don't know much about Star Wars. I've watched the movies, but I don't consider myself an uber-fan. I do know that Orthodox Star Wars Day isn't for another two weeks.![]() ![]() Ranking the Complete Works of Stephen King I didn't realize how few Stephen King novels I've read until I went through this list. I remember my father giving me The Night Shift when I was 10 or 11. It was a collection of short stories and the cover was a drawing of a bandaged hand that had eyes on it's finger tips. I was transfixed as I read The Mangler, Battleground, The Man Who Loved Flowers, Sometimes They Come Back, Night Surf(loosely related to The Stand), The Boogeyman, and The Lawnmower Man. I don't think I've ever read any Stephen King books since then. After going through these, I've decided to add several of these to my ever growing reading list. Here is a list of 7 through 3
The movie version of IT scared the crap out of me, so I've put it atop my list of Stephen King books to read. Thanks to Slublog for the hat tip. When is a Pregnancy a Bad Thing? I've read plenty of Stephen King, though I went off him when he started to get political.
His best book is Salem's Lot. Then The Stand (but don't get the updated version). Then The Shining. After that there's room for debate. I'd go with The Drawing of The Three, but YMMV. Posted by: Splunge at May 04, 2012 10:08 PM (2IW5Q) 16

I used to love me some Steven King books. They activated my imagination like no others. Heck, I even liked the corny screen adaptations of some of them: Needful Things, Pet Sematary (first one...sequel was for shite), Christine, etc. recently read The Dome. Good premise, shaky ending. However, since he's gone off the political deep end, I will ever read another word of his. Dennis LeHane is in the same category after reading his latest with multiple political sucker-punches. F'em both.

The Stand was the first King book I read and things pretty well went downhill from there, although the Dark Tower series had some good moments (until the end when the idiot wrote himself into the story).
Pet Semetary was good, but I swear I had it figured out in about 50 pages. If you can find it, read King's own account of writing that one. Cool language learning Chrome extension called Language Immersion. The cool thing is it replaces words in the browser with words in your target language (ie Spanish, French, Chinese, etc). It has a sliding scale from novice -intermediate - fluent. At novice it's just a couple words every paragraph or so.
Clever way to practice and keep up your language skills. So when you are reading Ewok porn it just throws in a little Spanish or German. .. And Stephen King freaks me out. Read one book in high school and got nightmares. Life is too short to intentionally give myself nightmares. Good writer. Too good. Posted by: Muhammad's Left Nut at May 04, 2012 10:29 PM (ZPrif) 103

Stephen King recycles a lot of stuff. One thing I haven't been able to forget since I noticed it was how often the hero has an injured leg while trying to flee towards the end of the book.
That shows up in Christine, The Tommyknockers, Cujo, Misery, etc. Misery is how Steven King sees his fans, forcing him to write trashy bestsellers they'll buy. Especially after a fan outed him as the author of the Bachman books. The Dark Half is King's fantasy revenge on the fan who outed him. Popular author gets outed as writer of darker books, and stops writing them. Dark hero of the books rises from the grave and kills the fan first thing. I always felt King's best work were the early story collections, and collections of novelettes. Other than that, Christine, Cujo and The Shining still showed the tight work of an author who wasn't too big to be edited. It and The Stand were middling work. Pushed too far even for King. That's why his short stories worked even then. Because the short length alone helped keep him under control. Posted by: Looking Glass at May 04, 2012 10:41 PM (2J6Jv) 159

There's a great little three part show based on three of King's short stories. Hosted by Sebastian Cabot IIRC. One story had a guy stuck on a window ledge by his prick head boss, the second had a cat that killed a tiny monster that was terrifying a child and the third had a toy company executive open a box mailed to him full of toy soldiers that came alive and killed him. It was very good. Most of his short stories were very good. The Stand was for the most part excellent, but got too PC at times. Kratos, waaaay back in HS, I might or might nothave been involved in an incident with a balloon and an acetylene/oxygen mix. Another miscreant had some lame-brained idea he would "prove" the mixture heavier than air.
Somewhere in the experiment (conducted not in the science room but in the metal shop) a lit torch strayed a might close to the balloon. It was no larger in diameter than 10-11 inches. The ensuing pop (heh) blew about three panes out of the shop windows but amazingly harmed no person. A teacher down the hall heard all that and ran down to search for survivors. By then one guy went out of the shop into the adjacent classroom and pretended to read the daily paper. The teacher ran in and asked, "What was that explosion?" and this guy responded, "What explosion?" Classic. Posted by: L Rob in OK at May 04, 2012 10:47 PM (7yvLv) 180

theres this oddball media-bashing going on towards the NFL. actually its been going on the past couple of years or so, and ive also noticed how soccer is trying to once again be spoon fed to us by the sports networks....hmmmmm
with that being said, the major media outlets boo- hooing about the saints bounty system got little to no attention from the fans in general, i kinda find that funny. it'll be the FANS that save the NFL. Ummm I think some aggregating website like the chive or something. There was no back story on it. Had there been one, I would have linked to it. I thought it was really cool. That's why I posted it. It made me think of a kid I knew in highschool. He had a goldfish that was like 13 years old. Normally kids get them and they die within a few weeks, but every once in a while the kid(or parents) take care of the animal and it reaches a ripe old age. In the case of the turtle pictured, it's still really young. If someone qas socking me I would be the first to challenge it assome of the long timers might realize. When I was pretty new to the site I copied and pasted a letter from a teacher that turned out, unbeknownst to me, was somehow associated with Ron Paul. I was evicerated by some of the Morons. To this day, as a stand alone letter it was okay. I didn't care about getting slapped around but someone changed my words and began posting in my name. That pissed me off. I jumped some folks back for that. A few Morons knew of me a little and things were settled down. Even apologies were offered and it was put to rest. Hopefully you know and accept my bonifides.

In re: to that EU president thing -
I recently came across the "Anti-Federalist Papers" on Kindle. I downloaded a sample but it seemed to let me read the whole thing. Fascinating read by people who were down with the Articles of Confederation and not so hot on the Constitution. They actually made some compelling arguments (in lieu of current times especially) against having a President, or allowing longer terms for Senate and congress people since it would lead to an "aristocracy". Reading through it seems eerily prophetic. Posted by: ArcadeHero at May 04, 2012 10:54 PM (zt7SE) 209

Oh, yes. Paint + children can be bad. ONE child painting a room, left unsupervised for a moment is usually fine, but kids lose their damn minds with their friends. At the last sleepover, my guy thought that since our boys are generally civilized and normal around our backyard firepit, the whole gaggle of boys from their classes would safely enjoy roasting hot dogs and marshmallows. That got stopped when their friend, The Ringleader (who is a good kid, with good parents, and who behaves himself quite well in one-on-one situations) fired the first Nerf arrow across the pit, convinced he could get flaming arrows going. I broke out the movies and the pizza early, or I was afraid we'd have Lord of the Flies going on. Posted by: jenny tries too hard at May 04, 2012 10:55 PM (snRY5) 214

They also didn't use the tips much, at least the Jedi didn't. This is highlighted in Timothy Zahn's "The Last Command" during the sequence where Luke is giving Mara some Force usage tips. She immobilized the remote via the Force and then struck it dead center with her light-saber. Luke then remarked that he had never been taught to use a light-saber like that and Mara retorted that the Emperor taught her to utilize every advantage possible. Saw The Avengers tonight. Thought it was very good. As for the typical Marvel teaser at the end of credits bit, there is an actual teaser after the "graphical credits" before the scrolling credits start. And then there is another teaser at the very end, which honestly if you want you can skip and look it up online after you see it. Kind of funny but I don't really think its worth sitting through the credits to see.

Posted by: DC in Towson at May 04, 2012 11:21 PM (I/cLr) Corran Horn actually uses this technique somewhat against the Yuzhan Vong. He has a blade that will double in length so one time he has it on and makes the length double to take down a Vong faster than it can react since it didn't expect the blade length to increase. A separate time he shuts off his blade in a fight to throw off his opponents balance and gets the hilt right against him before reactivating it. The Cat's Eye sounds pretty close to what I saw but it must have been re edited from an earlier film. The first story was about the guy on the ledge -- the other guy tried to wash him off with a fire hose but in a turn of play he ended up on the ledge himself. A pigeon kept pecking at his ankle and he fell off trying to kick it away. The second story was about the cat, the parakeet, the troll and the turntable. The third story was the weirdest of all -- a toy company executive got a Christmas present that was full of toy soldiers that came alive. They shot him from helicopters, with artillery, recoiless cannons mounted on jeeps, tanks and infantry. He locked himself in the bathroom to hide and the toy soldiers finally killed him with a tactical nuke. Since each story was introduced by Sebastian Cabot It must have been one of the earliest things King got put on film. The third story was really bizarre and a really great short story. I dunno about nipples, but I know that for a fact a part of the body you don't want to get sunburned is the tops of your feet. Spent a long summer day at the beach walking with the girlfriend at the surf line. Have fair skin and irish heritage so I put sunblock all over. Walking in the surf washed the stuff off my feet and they got burned bad. I mean by that night they had swollen up like over stuffed sausage casings. Couldn't walk, had to crawl around apt on all fours. Couldn't wear socks much less shoes so I was out of work for like 2 days. Un believable pain. Never let the tops of your feet burn...ever.

15 I've read plenty of Stephen King, though I went off him when he started to get political.
His best book is Salem's Lot. Then The Stand (but don't get the updated version). Then The Shining. After that there's room for debate. I'd go with The Drawing of The Three, but YMMV. Posted by: Splunge at May 04, 2012 10:08 PM (2IW5Q) That's my top 3 for Stephen King as well. I'd probably go Salem's Lot, The Shining, and The Stand for 1-3. He was an excellent writer 20+ years ago. Most of his stuff since then is pretty lousy. (His political stuff is a train wreck.) Other great Stephen King: Pet Sematary, Needful Things, and The Dead Zone. Most of IT is amazing but the last 200 pages are completely retarded. Still worth a read for how good most of it is, though. Hosted by Sebastian Cabot IIRC.One story had a guy stuck on a window ledge by his prick head boss, the second had a cat that killed a tiny monster that was terrifying a child and the third had a toy company executive open a box mailed to him full of toy soldiers that came alive and killed him.It was very good. Most of his short stories were very good.

Posted by: Purple Avenger at May 04, 2012 11:29 PM (digLc) Israel got very lucky in '73. They should have lost. The arabs had them. That was the second near loss since the inception of the State. Eventually, given enough opportunities, the arabs will win. It's just a matter of Bernoulli trials. I tried to impress this on my (left-wing) Israeli friends while I was there but I used to get responses of the sort (to my recommendations of serious war against the arabs, bombing cities, etc.) "You're probably right, but I don't want to be around if we have to do that." 167, 319: Most of stories were taken from King's Night Shift collection. the one about the guy on the ledge is called, funnily enough, "the Ledge". the one about the toy soldiers is "Battleground". The one about the guy who quits smoking is "Quitters Inc." The one about the cat is the only one that I don't think was in a book.
I really enjoy the first 4 sets of King's short story collections, and almost all of his work up until "It". Coincidentally (or not), he quit drinking and coke (he admits that he pretty much spent the years from 1980 through 1986 in a constant state of intoxication) , and his work started to go downhill. After he got run over, he really turned to shit. He rushed out the last books of the Dark Tower simply to get them done, as he was made keenly aware of his mortality. The last 3 books are simply awful. His last book, "11/22/63", was actually pretty good. I was skeptical that it would be a long screed against "right wing hate" and crazy JFK conspiracies, but other than a little lefty snark I found it to be politically neutral. I will read it again. That's my top 3 for Stephen King as well. Yes, we are definitely on something like the same wavelength here. I admit that The Dead Zone is stunning, and Needful Things is great in some sense. Hell, I even liked Insomnia, despite its taking a side I would not take in the baby-killing debate. Here's a strange coincidence...I just got to my US mail pile and I have King's newest book, "The Wind Through the Keyhole: A Dark Tower Story". It looks to be set between book 4 and 5 ("Wizards and Glass" and "Wolves of the Calla", respectively)....about the point where I felt that the main story went off the rails. I'll take advantage of the trial period and send it back if it's no good.

Posted by: Damn Sockpuppet at May 05, 2012 12:00 AM (fiXQh) Thanks. Battleground is etched n my brain. You just have to see it. The Ledge and the one about the cat named General were in the same episode as Battleground. It's probably the most frequently re broadcast episode of the series, appearing every three to five years. It's kind of like a plastic anti-laser, you spend energy collimating light, then attach a device that un-collimates it. It's like the Park Sabers, or the Ultrasabers, or the less-bright official Force FX sabers, which are all based on LEDs (except the handful of lamp-based ones). It is all via Netflix and the like, isn't it? I hate having to sign up for some subscription service just because I occasionally want to watch a movie or two that isn't recent enough to be at Redbox, I know if I signed up for Netflix I wouldn't get my money's worth because I might only watch a movie once or twice a month.

They have no weight, and slice through anything instantly. Little known
fact, only 1 out of 100 Jedi trainees, or younglings, survive Yoda's fencing school. Not instantly, based on what we've seen on screen (it took time for Obiwan to cut through the TF door). The lack of weight shouldn't be a huge issue, considering that normal blades are lighter than most people think. The real issue comes when you consider that the blade is omnidirectional, which means that if you touch it you're in trouble. This complicates basic swordsmanship where you keep the blade between yourself and your opponents blade. Posted by: Alex at May 05, 2012 12:54 AM (EnhSM) 411

I used to be a huge Stephen King fan in the 80's and 90's. I remember reading IT when I was 12 years old late into the night, and then being scared as hell to turn the light off. I had to jump out of bed, flick the switch, then jump back into bed as quickly as possible, tucking in the covers around my legs. I used to get the latest Stephen King book every year for Christmas when I was a
kid, but that stopped sometime when I was in college, when I lost interest in his writing. The quality of the stories really dropped off at that point, in my opinion, and I never went back to see if it got better again. I still have a few of those Christmas books on my shelf that I never finished (Insomnia, Desperation, The Regulators - I can't even recall if I started those). I can only speak intelligibly about iTunes. You have a period of time once rented to download and watch the movie. The two do not have o be done at the same time, so that you may be sure you have the whole movie before you watch it. Posted by: MikeTheMoose Troll Hunter! at May 05, 2012 01:04 AM (GE1+K) 423
Chemjeff, you can "rent" movies through Amazon streaming. You could probably even do it through the AoS amazon link and give them their kickback. I think rentals cost around $3-4, depending on the movie. I've only ever bought TV shows through them, though, so I'm not familiar with the details of how renting works (how long it is available).
We recently cancelled our Netflix subscription because we weren't using it that much. Our plan is to rent movies through Amazon when we see something we really want to watch. Posted by: not the mama at May 05, 2012 01:04 AM (96Kco) 424

Oh, and for the lightsabers, the "real" toy ones have sounds, and the more expensive ones are reprogrammable.
The headlines on the Wicked "lasersaber" are pathetic. I really hate misleading headlines anyway, and this is just a fine example of it. It's not a lightsaber. It's a toy. A toy you're only allowed to wave in the air, and only then with everyone present wearing special safety glasses. I think that sounds more annoying than fun myself, but what the Hell do I know, I don;t write headlines. Posted by: Merovign, Dark Lord of the Sith at May 05, 2012 01:07 AM (bxiXv) 429
King's "Bachmann Books" collection is pretty entertaining. It's a set of 4 stories that he wrote before he hit the big time, and had published later under the pseudonym just to see if he could sell books without his name attached.. The stories are "Rage", "The Long Walk", "Roadwork" and "The Running Man".
The original collection is hard to find since King pulled the "Rage" from publication after a kid tried to mimic the story...it's about a high-school loser who snaps, takes his class hostage, and holds a psychological purging session. "Long Walk" is sort of a precursor to the "Hunger Games"...100 teenagers volunteer for an annual forced march, last one standing gets anything he wants. "Running Man" is what the Schwarzenegger movie was based on but the book is almost completely different. Again, in a typically bleak America of the future, a man signs up to be hunted down. If he lasts for 30 days, he gets a huge cash prize. This is probably the weakest of the 4 stories, it foreshadows King's bad habit of using the deus ex machina at the end of his stories. "Roadwork" is one of my favorite short stories of his. It was written in 1973 during the first gas crisis, and deals with a man who cracks after his neighborhood is slated to be demolished for "urban renewal". Again, these are not great stories, but I found them entertaining and memorable. Posted by: Damn Sockpuppet at May 05, 2012 01:08 AM (fiXQh) 430

No matter how much I disdain how he got to where he is (affirmative action/quota, thug politics, racial chameleon , etc) I guess you could argue that he had successfully worked the system to get to where he is. Problem is, anyone who can successfully "work the system" is more likely to not hesitate in working YOU over, should you be foolish enough to put him in charge of the system. So, I went dancing on Sunday, and afterwards went out to eat with a girl that I met there. We made plans to go on another date on Friday. Wednesday she calls me at about 10pm, and after a few minutes of talking she mentions that she has an hour to kill while waiting for her roommate's flight to get in. I suggest that she join me for a drink at the bar. She agrees and drives about 30 minutes to meet me. We have a drink, talk, joke and seem to have a good time. I walk her out to her car, we hug, and then we kiss for a few minutes. She seems to like it, because shes making that goofy grin that women do when you kiss them, and she keeps nuzzling my nose with hers.
The next day she sends me a text message: "I'm not interested in going on another date with you." WTF? Posted by: Alex at May 05, 2012 01:45 AM (EnhSM) 455

Don - Upon hearing my hubby was Jersey-bred, someone wanted to pick his brain on desirable neighborhoods, seeing as he was getting a job in NYC and needed to relocate. That someone started to say he thought Elizabeth looked like a prospect---and wasn't allowed to finish that sentence. Much scorn on Elizabeth thrown as prelude to a 20 minute travelogue. I also remember hubby lived at Guttenberg at one point and had a certain fondness for that time. But of course his data is at least a decade old. Still, I could ask him tomorrow if you wish and post the results in the next ONT.

No, i think that's about right, it's an even race at this point with Obamass probably having a slight edge. Whether we like it or not he's going to run on the war on women nonsense and a lot of people are going to buy into it, he'll gin up whatever daily outrage he can and a lot of people will buy into that too, hopefully Romney can keep steering the narrative back onto Obamass record, if he does that we win, if not we lose. Posted by: the new, improved arhooley -- now with 10% more cynicism! at May 05, 2012 02:13 AM (xqug+) There's a lot of very rough times to live through. America needs to have a strong sense of itself to make it through. When the Fed has to finally unwind their balance sheet, the chaos is going to be quite unbelievable. I don't think people really understand what we're in for and what we have to live through to get out of this mess. Most people prefer to pretend that the Fed will never have to drain liquidity and that interest rates will never go above .000003% again for a 200 year bond. We have been borrowing "free" thanks to the Fed, but that debt service will have to be made and it will have to be made at interest rates 3 to 4 times higher than they are now. That spells something like $1 trillion/year in debt service. An America that could watch 3 years of the dog-eating retard fucking up everything in sight and acting, generally, as no American ever does, and still contemplate voting for him is a very weak country that will turn back crazy on a dime. America cannot survive like that and will not. Either Mittens wins by something like 8% or more or America is just taking a slight respite on the downward spiral. If America doesn't soundly reject the Indonesian Retard then this really isn't America. Posted by: ThePrimordialOrderedPair at May 05, 2012 02:20 AM (X3lox) 500

Soooo, here are our genuine dissertation titles from Black Studies programs:
“‘So I Could Be Easeful’: Black Women’s Authoritative Knowledge on Childbirth” by Ruth Hayes. “Race for Profit: Black Housing and the Urban Crisis of the 1970s” by Keeanga-Yamahtta Taylor, who believes there was some kind of conspiracy in the federal government’s promotion of single family homes in black neighborhoods after the unrest of the 1960s. Then something by La TaSha B. Levy. According to the Chronicle of Higher Education, “Ms. Levy is interested in examining the long tradition of black Republicanism, especially the rightward ideological shift it took in the 1980s after the election of Ronald Reagan. Ms. Levy’s dissertation argues that conservatives like Thomas Sowell, Clarence Thomas, John McWhorter, and others have ‘played one of the most-significant roles in the assault on the civil-rights legacy that benefited them.’” Others bring Friday night drink recipes and music videos -- I bring upper outrage from the outer reaches of the upper intelligentsia!!! Clarence Thomas, John McWhorter, and others have ‘played one of the most-significant roles in the assault on the civil-rights legacy that benefited them.’” Damn those House N***ers who betrayed the "civil-rights legacy" by leaving the Liberal Plantation. They only look like semi-normal humans in comparison to the slime that is the dems and their ineligible dog-eating retard. I'm hoping for the best, but my bet is with the Constitutional Union of American States. We have gone beyond the critical density of leftists and America-haters in our population and I really don't think they can be stopped. They are for destruction, which is easy, requires no skill or intelligence and they have all the time in the world. That's why I was saying that unless America totally rejects the dog-eater (and those who support him) then there is nothing to be saved. I find Wisconsin to be a nasty omen - the dems skip town, illegally, lie about all sorts of stuff, have insane protests and riots in the state capitol, have doctors smiling as they commit fraud in public ... and it's Scott Walker who is up for recall. That is not a functioning society, in any way. Posted by: ThePrimordialOrderedPair at May 05, 2012 02:52 AM (X3lox) 517

Posted by: the new, improved arhooley -- now with 10% more cynicism! at May 05, 2012 02:13 AM (xqug+) ==== There are two things going on that have absolutely nothing to do with reality -- 1) the jackie robinson effect, and 2) the Redsox fan phenomena. 1) When Branch Rickey chose Jackie Robinson he picked a guy who could actually play. When we picked Obutsux we were not that wise. So now there are a whole host of folks that are terrified that we will hold it against the next guy -- it is forcing them to lie to themselves about a lot of stuff. Even if Robinson couldn't hit a curve ball, Mays still woulda been a hellavu player. They don't give us the credit for knowing that. 2) this one is not a race issue, and it applies to every election, no matter what. -- people often pick up their politics in the same way they pick up their favorite teams. Dad Grandpa raise them to be Redsox (or any other team in any other sport) fans. Cheering for another team is not possible for them -- doing so would be like pissing on Grandpa's grave. We have about as much chance getting a lot of folks to change the way they vote as you would have getting them to stand up in front of all their multi-year, neighboring-seat, season-ticket-holding fiends in Fenway Park to cheer for the Yankees. (Doesn't have to be Boston, could be anywhere.) Once someone declares an allegiance to a team, most can't change that even if they want to. If you can get an Auburn fan to cheer for Alabama, or a Browns fan to cheer for the Ravens -- then you can get hardcore Dems to vote Republican. The really weird part is a lot of them live more conservative lives than you -- but they vote like assholes cuz that is the way Grandpa taught them. And, somewhere along the line there was a valid reason -- might have been 1882, or 1906, or somewhere -- but some Republican way back when did something that pissed off somebody's Grandpa's Grandpa are we are still stuck with the consequences. Its gotta be 50/50 at least. I cannot accept that she got that way from tanning.. nor why or how she possibly could. She looks like a person in black-face. Posted by: jc at May 05, 2012 02:58 AM (ufJKx) Yep. It takes strength and courage. A lot. America has always been unique and much at odds with how they do things in the rest of the world - which is why we were the greatest nation that ever existed. That disappeared under the Indonesian. To get it back is much harder and requires more of a solid commitment than just maintaining it. Barky needs to be jailed, eventually, for the tens of un-Constitutional and illegal acts that he's perpetrated during his ineligible time in office. If not, then any claims at a Rule of Law, here, are a farce (as they are now). I mean, we actually have it in the official record (and with the blessings of our shithead GOP) that empathy is a legitimate main qualification for a judge or justice. Now, that isn't just about America, that's about the destruction of over 3 millenia of history of Western jurisrudence. A lot of what you cranked out is crap, you keep the good stuff and do the bad stuff over. Like a lot of writers, I have a problem writing crap. I don't want to do it. I sit and stare at the blank. Good evening.
So, The Avengers? In threeeeee deeeeeeee? Short version, I enjoyed the shit out of this movie. On top of that, I think the 3D came out pretty well. So, this makes the third movie I've actually enjoyed the 3D. Bonus! I noticed this with Transformers 3, but the impressive thing about 3D isn't the 3D per se, it's the clarity of the image. It's much sharper. Or maybe it's the way the movie is shot. I can't explain it. I'm going to see this movie again in the next couple of weeks in 2D so I'll try to compare. But did shit come out 3D? And the answer is...mostly. I learned that, apparently, 3D cameras are expensive and in short supply. Or at least expensive. Anyway, filmmakers don't use them for everything and, at least as was the case with Michael Bay and Transformers 3, they only get so much time with them (which is why I think they're in short supply). So yes, there are stretches that are basically very sharp 2D. But when the 3D is actually three dimensional it looks great. The climax looks fantastic. Lots of depth of field shots where the 3D really shines. Definitely made it worth the $12.25. As for the movie itself, what can I say? It picks up after Thor and Captain America. Loki is the main villain along with the shapeshifting alien Skrulls. Except they're not called Skrulls since Marvel Studios doesn't have the rights to that name. They call them the Chitauri, which is a reference to the Mark Millar written The Ultimates, which was an alt-universe take on The Avengers. Bad guys need their asses kicked, Avengers show up and kick their ass. Everyone reprises their roles save for Mark Ruffalo as Bruce Banner/The Incredible Hulk (Ed Norton got canned cause the producer, Kevin Feige, hates his ass). Gwyneth Paltrow even comes out for a few minutes. And I intend, now, to save myself for Scarlett Johansson. And now I shall put on my wife beater, get sloshed and knock this movie around because I love it that much, baby. I like Joss Whedon. Really, I think Joss Whedon is a talented writer and producer and he's made a bunch of great TV shows and written some great comics and I think he's all kinds of neat. Not a terribly great director. This movie works because all the work has been done. It's a fairly straight ahead action movie. It starts slow but keeps building and building until finally it ends in one orgasmic finale. Fuckin' A! But Whedon is largely a television guy. He's directed one other movie, Serenity, which was based on his show Firefly. (Loved Firefly. Never actually saw Serenity.) You can't help but watch the movie and get a kind of nagging feeling that you're watching episode one of a series. And that's kind of what the biggest flaw was. Take a director who is accustomed to working in serial formats and have him do a single, one-off, complete in of itself, movie. And he mostly succeeds. Mostly. And the actors, I think, just do what they've done before. Robert Downey, Jr. is going to do what Robert Downey, Jr. does. He knows the role, he's developed it, it's his. Same pretty much holds true for Chris Evans and Chris Hemsworth as Captain America and Thor. The biggest surprise was Tom Hiddleston. He really went a long way towards making the Thor movie better than it should have been, but here it's almost a Tom Hiddleston impression of Tom Hiddleston as Loki. Where Branagh got a much more subtle performance from Hiddleston, Whedon lets him go well over the top. So where Whedon generally gets it right is in the script and in art direction but as a director of actors, as a director of big screen actors, he's got a long ways to go. BUT, special props go to Mark Ruffalo and Scarlett Johansson. Mark Ruffalo, who is new to this role, for playing it low key and Scarlett Johansson for being so damn beautiful. And both of whom, I might add, are probably the runaway fan favorites of this movie. Hulk looks great and Ruffalo leaves you wanting more from his character and Johanssen's Natasha Romanov/Black Widow is...well, if it's one thing Joss Whedon knows how to do well it's writing female characters. Overall, criticisms aside, I think this was a fantastic movie. It has been years in the making and it has been well worth the wait. I will say its flaws keep it from being better than the movies that lead into it, but it stands quite well alongside them. Go see it. Go have fun. Go drool over Scarlett Johansson. It's a good movie and I think you might find yourselves enjoying it. Posted by: Robert at May 05, 2012 04:09 AM (F79HU) Posted by: Robert at May 05, 2012 04:10 AM (F79HU) 545

Most the stuff I write is entirely QBS. Price competition is sometimes added as a criteria. If selection is all or mostly price based, too high of a winning percentage is a bad thing. I don't want that and you probably don't either. You are probably doing the right things. Posted by: jc at May 05, 2012 04:41 AM (ufJKx) 578

There are two things going on that have absolutely nothing to do with reality --
1) the jackie robinson effect, and 2) the Redsox fan phenomena. Posted by: jc at May 05, 2012 02:55 AM (ufJKx) Ya know, I like to say something similar. People pick their team and just go along with whatever their team says and does. It's easier to choose blind loyalty over critical thought. People pick their allegiances for some dumb reason, no need to question it as long as things are going well. I used to be a liberal Democrat because that's what my mother is/was/still trying to brainwash her into switching sides. Then I got my own ideas, had a few assumptions challenged and started shopping around. Now I'm a wild eyed libertarian that wants to see the Democrat Party burned to the fucking ground. Posted by: Robert at May 05, 2012 06:34 AM (F79HU) === The big thing for me was when I realized that we are always stuck on the wrong subject. No matter what, the subject is money. The translation of "It's not about the money" into english is: "it's about the money." Money is just a proxy for our time. If we could get the subject to be about time, there is no way the liberalism can survive because the slavery aspects of it become very, very clear. The worst part is we are always working on solutions to problems we don't understand. We need to change the focus to the correct subject. One example -- you sell your time when you go to your job. When does a welfare recipient have to give up their time? They claim ownership to 100% of their time, and some of yours. The slavery party calls that "fair" -- in part because they are deluding themselves into believing the correct topic is money -- not time. The reason they are fucking up on health care so badly is because they are trying to address a time problem as a money problem. -- The list of ways they are blowing it cuz of this basic mistake is very long. To bastardize a trite phrase "its the morality stupid" until we restore a sense of shame, or a stigma to the freeloaders we will continue in this societal death spiral. There was some archaic text that said something to the effect of: THOU SHALT NOT STEAL. Posted by: cm9000 at May 05, 2012 06:57 AM (MwTP4) 640

Posted by: cm9000 at May 05, 2012 06:57 AM (MwTP4) === Yep. And when you look at it as time rather than money, it becomes clear the line between stealing and slavery is pretty blurry. You spend 3 years saving enough to get a car. Car is stolen. Did you lose money? Sure, but you can get more money. Did you lose 3 years? Yep. How are you supposed to replace that time? Time is a limited resource. Sure, it's found all over the universe but for human beings it's a thing in short supply.
Do we look to extend our lives because of a fear of death or because we desire more time? Damn, that's a good philosophical question. Posted by: Robert at May 05, 2012 07:04 AM (F79HU) 642

Suppose we were to look at all of our political questions using the dependent variable of Time rather than money. How many things would be different?
First, could there even be a concept of Government Time similar to the concept of Government Money? Or, would it be more obvious to more people that Government is not actually alive so the Time it has must have been taken from somebody? Posted by: jc at May 05, 2012 07:18 AM (ufJKx) 646
If our political questions were asked in terms of Time instead of terms of money, would people expect their congressman to identify who's hours were owed in trillion dollar deficits. Would you get a letter from your congressman each year that reads something like:
"Mr. Jones, this year's deficits are based on the confiscation of 1 year, 7 months of your life. Please report to Camden NJ next thursday to begin your payment." ?? Posted by: jc at May 05, 2012 07:28 AM (ufJKx) 647
In this context time is money. As Lincoln said "It may seem strange that any man should dare to ask a just God's
assistance in wringing their bread from the sweat of other men's faces." Today we call it welfare or better yet entitlements. Posted by: cm9000 at May 05, 2012 07:33 AM (MwTP4) 648
OK, so this stuff is not going to happen. What will happen instead? The currency will be destroyed by the complete invalidation of the concept that there is actually enough productive time available to back it up. So, everyone that was responsible for themselves and saved money for their retirement will end up being played for a sucker. It is a form of slavery after the fact.
Simple concept -- which type of slave will produce more: a) the person that knows they are a slave the whole time, or b) the person who thinks they are earning for themselves, and when they have accumulated a suitable amount, then what they have saved is confiscated? Anybody really believe slave a) will outproduce slave b) ?? Me neither. Notice how easy it is to do the confiscation by taking over the government and spending on your friends until the currency implodes. Slavery by case b) without having to wait. The time argument/exemplar is very revealing. It is another example of the misdirection of the liberal magician. Almost all legislation and regulation is not directed towards solving the underlying problem, but rather to applying an "apparent" fix to a problem that has been reformulated so as to benefit a class, not society at large.
The simplest example I could think of was the old tax day statement where, for the few os us that worked and paid taxes, we were told that by May (approximately), we had finished our "involuntary servitude" to the state by earning enough to pay our income taxes. I was always surprised that that did not get more traction and outrage. Posted by: Hrothgar at May 05, 2012 07:49 AM (i3+c5) 654

James Anaya, the UN special rapporteur on the rights of indigenous peoples, said no member of the US Congress would meet him as he investigated the part played by the government in the considerable difficulties faced by Indian tribes.

Cinco Pinata!! Winner takes all.
The Guardian US should return stolen land to Indian tribes, says United Nations special rapporteur on the rights of indigenous peoples James Anaya. The self promoting correspondent on indigenous peoples urges government to act to combat 'racial discrimination' felt by Native Americans. Anaya said he had received "exemplary cooperation" from the Obama administration but he declined to speculate on why no members of Congress would meet him. -- Try this on for size: send back the UN members from whence they came. Give back Alaska to the Russians, er, to the Inuit. Give back Hawaii to the Chinese and Japanese, er, the Calvin Missionaries, er, the Native Polynesians. Give back the US to the Native American Tribes. What? Reminiscent of Hitler usurping all German speaking territories as Deutschland, regardless. Funny propaganda piece from the English spawning such a "report" as if EU Dictate given the British Empire's colonial global usurpation record, murdering all the German pioneers in Africa to confiscate "ownership" through military interventionism, murdering any natives that got in their way in Ireland, India, China, Africa, Arabia. Loads of allies those top dog British accumulated over the centuries. This qualifies as a self loathing twisted British antipathy for their own mixed blood, as if they'd force out the Saxons for having imposed immigration too far West once upon a time. Next, expect all "white" people exterminated, no longer welcome in the Caucasus where the communist myth would pinpoint every "white" origination, certainly no longer welcome in Africa where Darwinians say we all originated. As if every white person could fit into Scandinavia. Just in time for NATO in Chicago, Chicago. Posted by: Funf de Mayo at May 05, 2012 07:57 AM (lpWVn) 658

I remember picking up Salem's Lot back in 1975, and finding it the scariest thing I'd ever read. It's not only that it's vampires, it's the personal thing. Here's this Peyton Place-like town, and you get to know the people, like some, despise others. Then they start dying, and coming back. It's not some classy Transylvanian count at your door, no. It's your own wife, whose funeral you just attended, and now here she is, floating outside your second-story bedroom window, hissing, "Let me in . . ."
Aside from that, Different Seasons (all four stories) is one of his finest; and The Dead Zone (never mind that Christopher Walken movie -- though the Anthony Michael Hall TV series was well done) stands with the best SF about psi powers; and Pet Sematary, well, you'll look at your house cat very differently after you read that. And The Green Mile will grab you for sure. I haven't read 11/22/63. As for his politics, remember that he's an early Baby Boomer, and would have been caught up in the anti-Vietnam War protests and things in college. Ignore that and enjoy his best storytelling.
