| Overnight Open Thread (4-2-2012)Okay this is supposed to be a snarky criticism of the American military but perhaps unintentionally it also captures a key feature behind the success of the US military and the country at large: We're quite comfortable with a certain level of chaos. Now that may not seem like much of an advantage until you realize just how poorly most other nations and cultures do handle it. Many places in the world are far better organized than we are - both government-wise and business-wise and even culturally. So in times of stability they will tend to do quite well since they're able to focus lots of national resources with far less inefficiency than the US does e.g. pretty much all the things which give Thomas Friedman a mental erection. Which is great. Until times aren't so stable. Then their organization and efficiency turns out to be quite brittle - when there's no official in charge and hence no 'official' way to keep the system running people will tend to just stop and wait for someone(else) to come handle it. You get paralysis instead of initiative. But one of the hidden strengths in America is that while we tend to chafe at authority - especially the more centralized and organized it is - we are also very good at self-organizing. Throw a bunch of Americans together along with a challenging task and pretty quickly they'll come up with plan(s) and someone (or someones) will step up to take charge. It won't be pretty and it won't be very organized and it may not be the 'best' solution and it'll sure *look* like chaos, but it is likely to get done and work. And because this kind of organization is organic it's also more robust - if the task changes or people come and go, the group can adapt and improvise on the fly. After all this isn't all that different from how most Americans operate in their daily lives at work. So we'll never win awards for our national organization or have the trophy projects to show off like some countries, but when chaos does come we're able to deal with it, adapt, and even thrive on it. For us chaos = opportunity. Which is good because I suspect there's going to be a good deal of chaos coming down the road.
Fox Sports' Tim McCarver: Global Warming is Causing More Home Runs in MLB It's not newer parks, steroids, better training, or changes in the balls - nope it's On Fox Sports' coverage of Saturday's Milwaukee Brewers-St. Louis Cardinals baseball game analyst Tim McCarver theorized about why home runs seems to be flying out of ball parks. He thinks it's global warming/climate change: Yep the air is getting thinner. So in that case...wouldn't more CO2 (or anything else) be a good thing? Why India's Caste System Persists My American friends frequently ask me why India's caste system, a pre-feudalistic division of labor that assigns one's line of work at birth, has persisted into the 21st century in defiance of every civilized notion of justice and equality. I thought I knew the answer: The need of the privileged upper castes for cheap labor to do their dirty work. But there is an even more tragic explanation that I discovered during a recent visit to New Delhi while talking to Maya, the dalit or untouchable-the lowest of the four castes-who has serviced my family for 35 years. Maya herself clings to her caste because it offers her the best possible life, even in modern India. Read the article to see how the caste system offers those at the bottom a certain minimal standard of living even if it also limits them from ever escaping it. And in India even something low down is better than nothing. The 5 Creepiest Disappearances That Nobody Can Explain For 20 years, Ray Gricar was the district attorney of Centre County, Pennsylvania. He was a solid man with a tough reputation. On April 15, 2005, Gricar phoned his girlfriend and told her he was driving in the countryside and would be back soon. Investigators found that at the time of his disappearance in 2005, Gricar was working on what would be known as the Penn State sex abuse scandal, which may or may not end up revealing an assistant football coach as a horrible dickbag who deserves all the prison. You know, that scandal that just broke last year. Gricar was working on it six years earlier. Welcome To The NFL - Here's Your New Life An open letter to future top NFL draft picks Andrew Luck and Robert Griffin III from former NFL player Nate Jackson: After negotiating your contracts, you both will surely buy a house in an affluent suburb where no 22-year-old would be happy living. Your new neighbors will be rich as well, facelifted, lipo-sucked, Xanaxed and dripping in diamonds, simply delighted to welcome you to the neighborhood. You will commission an interior decorator, recommended by a neighbor, to furnish your home. This will guarantee it feels nothing like Home. And someday, when all of this is over, you'll walk through and gaze upon the marble columns and the embroidered drapes like artifacts in a museum, wondering why you ever listened to that woman. Because if a female guard sees it, then you'll be listed as a sex offender: (Hartford, Connecticut) At the Northern Correctional Institution, masturbating male inmates have been regularly observed by female workers. And the neck massager really hits the spot. Or something. Teh Tweet! Tonight's post brought to you by worst love story ever: Notice: Posted by permission of AceCorp LLC. That is in fact the worm at the heart of ANY attempt at a "planned" society: it presupposes a steady state, or at least changes which are easily predictable, so that the master planners can know what's going to happen. Unfortunately, the real world is NEVER like that. You see it in Europe, where the governments do their damnedest to stifle innovation and "disruption" by favoring large, established companies rather than encouraging start-ups.
If you could somehow succeed in stamping out all change in one country, there will still be disruption coming from abroad. And if you could get stasis-minded technocratic "elites" in charge everywhere, there are still unpredictable random events and discoveries which can't be suppressed. And if even THAT could be controlled . . . then you're creating a perpetual living death for humanity. Posted by: Trimegistus at May 02, 2012 10:38 PM (4rD2K) 26

Yep the air is getting thinner. So in that case...wouldn't more CO2 (or anything else) be a good thing?
*** CO2 is denser then the more common compounds in the air - O2 and N2. So...if the marginal increase in air density cause by increased CO2 emissions has any measurable effect at all it would reduce the speed of pitches and the number of home runs. I'd chalk it up to better training regimes and probably harder to trace steroids. Posted by: 18-1 at May 02, 2012 10:40 PM (3aXbg) Posted by: Trimegistus at May 02, 2012 10:41 PM (4rD2K) 38

IIRC, a lot it has to do with changes in hitting technique over the past ten years. Slight changes have helped to increase the number of home runs by creating more efficient swings. Steroids may not actually provide much of an enhancement at all. Posted by: Alex at May 02, 2012 10:43 PM (zSobX) 46

"But one of the hidden strengths in America...self-organizing from the bottom"
Government is 'NP-Hard' in programming-speak. Really groking that makes a hell of a lot of sense out of pretty much most of history. Take the Traveling Salesman problem. It gets pretty damn hairy if you're trying to (top-down) solve it for 330,000,000 people. But... If you're willing to fundamentally view the problem as 330,000,000 individual salesmen each with a sliver of the same mission, you'll get something functional in no time flat. Yeah this in no way seems like a negative to me. Andit seems like something others understand even if they don't realize it. Video games and some sci-fi novels seem to recognize it. Often times in sci-fi games the humans in the game tend to represent Americans and you get lines like "Put 3 humans into a room and you will wind up with 6 opinions" Or you get a novel that talks about telling people to do something a certain way and they will do it, or you can give them a task to accomplish and they will come up with a method that wasn't even considered before. For the gamers amongst us, another creepy disappearance would be Carl Sargent.
Sargent was a prolific game designer for TSR / D-ampersand-D's second edition, and (IMO) the best designer they had until the WotC buyout. Night Below: amazing. Iuz the Evil: classic. Toward the end he'd just about finished a piece on the Great Kingdom in the Greyhawk setting and - - poof - There's been talk that he got into some sort of "accident" but there was only ever one source for that, and that source clammed up afterward. Interestingly before he became a D-amp-D designer he was a parapsychologist - like in Ghostbusters. There were a few experiments he got into in the 1970s, which I assume were bunk, but which many people seem to agree were harder to debunk than most other 1970s experiments of that sort. Maybe the MIB got him. Posted by: Boulder Toilet Hobo at May 02, 2012 10:57 PM (QTHTd) 91

Hi, Morons. I read an article last night about a 14 year old girl who is sueing her classmates for online bullying. Basically, they made a fake Facebook page of her. I lol'd at the bullies: "She didn’t know why she was being badgered until she discovered the phony Facebook page. It was her name and information, though her profile picture was doctored to make her face appear bloated. The page suggested Alex smoked marijuana and spoke a made-up language called “Retardish.”" Posted by: Z Ryan at May 02, 2012 11:02 PM (tsC/8) 104

The Soviets define chaos as when an NCO takes initiative and doesn't sit around waiting for orders from Stalin.
The Germans had excellent NCO's and allowed initiative, so their argument would seem more valid, BUT they only had to manage a few hundred Tiger tanks while we have to manage tens of thousands of Sherman tanks...there is a quality of chaos that only quantity can produce. the problem with "planned" economies is that they rely on a "planned society" and that in itself stamps out individualism. As americans we have been very spoiled about being allowed to be who we are and do as we like as long and nobody is directly hurt by it.
i always nicker at these stupid utopians when i think about how freaking eccentric and individualistic they are, usually being dirty hippies and hipsters, and how the boot they plan for us will unexpectedly stomp on them too, perhaps more painfully. Because of course, they always planned to be wearing the boot, not UNDER it. My former soviet friends try to explain, and its so damn funny to watch. Only few get it. Chaos means all forms of command are garggled. American troops are able to pick up the slack by sheer leadership. A PFC saying "do this!".
PFC Martin, also of the 325th Glider Infantry Regiment, who during the battle asked a retreating tank destroyer commander, "Are you looking for a safe place?" When the tank commander answered yes, PFC Martin replied, "Well buddy just pull that vehicle behind me -- I am the 82d Airborne and this is as far as the bastards are going." And they did. One of the units that coalesced around that ad-hoc road block at Vielsam was commanded by Lt. Bill Rogers aka William Rogers Jr. (Will Rogers Jr.). Through out the night men from the busted line stopped and joined the forces there. Soon they had a road block the German's couldn't break. One guy saying "I've had ENOUGH of this shit and I'm done with it." And _that_ 'ron and ronette's are why American soldiers are the toughest bastards on the planet. It's why the rest of the sissy world doesn't play _real_ football. It's why the Left has taken dodge ball out of school. Posted by: Quilly Mammoth at May 02, 2012 11:16 PM (V31zQ) 168

The deal with American organizational methods - starting with the Constitution (before Marshall), Capitalism, and our military - is that they are designed from the ground up to embrace the eventual chaos.
The Constitution assumes the mutual lust for power will keep all the branches of government watching each other (FU Harry Reid). Capitalism relies on Adam Smith's Invisible Hand to guide the economy rather then a rigid expert system. And, our NCO centric military encourages responsibility and problem solving at just above the lowest levels. So, when chaos arrives we adapt, quickly. Ann Bancroft was 35 when she played Mrs. Robinson. The music was great and really added to the movie. The scene when she was scrubbing a spot from her hose showed what a cold indifferent bitch she was and she was using Hoffman purely for sex. It was a weird flick. As for India's caste system: that's partly due to Hinduism as well. Its a "sin" to try to better yourself, because you deserve your position on the wheel of karma based on your previous life. If you live a virtuous life, you'll reincarnate as a higher life form (humans actually don't rate very high on the list from what I've seen), but virtuous living is about giving up things and doing without, not gaining and bettering your life. After all: matter and the world is an illusion anyway.

The plus side is that I have all the time in the world to work on the Walker campaign and any other good mischief that needs to happen to the democraps this year. Thanks, Chem, but what those boys are looking for isn't what I've got. I'm architectural design and production, and they need project management and engineer coordination. I looked into similar companies in AK, particularly Kuparuk and even Prudhoe, because the money is exquisite, but my qualifications aren't anything like what they need.
The hell of it is that I love the little tiny job I'm doing now, coordinating religious ed at a smallish parish and teaching kids all things Catholic. It lets me be done working when the boy is done with his school day, and it gives me lots of self-direction, and plenty of people to supervise. I can indulge my egghead side studying and teaching, creating lessons for every age and making sure the little ones get first communion and the older ones figure out how to get confirmed without offending the Bishop. There's just no money in it. Maybe I should become a community organizer and run for higher office..... but I'm probably the wrong color for that. Posted by: tcn at May 03, 2012 12:00 AM (WhSRj) 329

So what's the deal with Kate Upton? I mean, she's purty and all but a lot of girls are. I keep seeing/reading the obsession with the boobehs. They don't do much for me. Don't get me wrong; I would kick them, or the lovely sheila they're attached to outa' bed for eatin' crackers...just, hmm. I don't get it.
If I understand any of it, it's that she's kinda cute and funny when caught in unguarded moments. THAT'S when I find her sexy; not when she's doing some sort of "look-at-how-sexy-I-am" thing. I always thought the same thing about Jessica Simpson. Sure, she gets a lot of shit for being a bubble-head but I'm sorry, bubble heads don't create a business around their image worth $100,000,000. The American ethos of officer training is to tell young officers to "Do Something." Facedwith any situation, with or without orders, with or without resources, Do Something. If a US Army lieutenant is found by his boss, the worst thing he can be doing is Nothing. It is this "Do Something" ethos, combined with an ethos that values Winning above anything else (like following the rules), that makes our military what it is. I've been reading the quotes about chaos in the US Army for decades. They ring true. For us, winning is more important than following the rules or demonstrating fidelity to the doctrine we slept through. It doesn't matter what you went through to win - you just have to win. I've seen situations where the Division planning group was busily going through their planning process when the Assistant Division Commander walked in to the TOC, looked at the map, and said, "Do this." The ADC's orders won the battle. The planning staff came out of thier meeting a few hours later, looked at the map, and said, "What happened? He can't do that without us!" I spent a year training the Iraqi army. Their ethos is "Follow Orders." Iraqi officers do what they are told to do. If they are told that they will conduct a training march in a certain order, with first battalion going first and second battalion going second, they will do that. If first battalion is walking like crippledelderly people, second battalion will wait for them. In a US military unit, on the same march, second battalion will run past first battalion. Second battalion will then lord it over first battalion until the next training march, when first battalionwill havethe chance to regain their manhood by marching faster. That is why we crushed them in a few hours. Twice. Posted by: Penultimatum at May 03, 2012 01:01 AM (EEUs4) 440

I appreciate Maet's defending us from that absolutely hilarious demotivational, but he's a little off. I'll offer 2 short points: 1. Don't confuse chaos with flexibility. Our Armed Forces absolutely have doctrine, strategy, and tactics down better than anyone on the planet- but it's not a "suicide pact". The greenest butter bar understands regulations aremore like guidelines than laws. I busted regs hundreds of time, and always received praise and top ratings for thinking outside the box. If you focus on the intent rather than the mechanics, you get a better result. There are a few dicks out there, but this was my near universal experience. 2. NCOs rule. An American sergeant has more authority and ability to shape a battle than other countries' colonels. If there are only 2 soldiers, 1 is in charge. Leadership is stressed at all levels. I'd say we have a deep bench when it comes to leadership, except there is no bench- everyone is a leader. OK. I'll jump off my soapbox now. I personally thought of battle planning as sort of a vague vision statement with a bunch of useless filler material masquerading as details. More for practice in making decisions than producing a plan that would actually accomplish objectives.

Penultimatum,
A recent Academy class got a little heat for choosing Gen Robin Olds as their 'exemplar'. It's a relatively new 'tradition' to choose a historic AF figure who had leadership qualities that you hope your class will emulate. Robin Olds was a profane, rule breaking son of a bitch. But he was probably the best fighter pilot in USAF history. I've met Chuck Yeager and Steve Ritchie over the course of my career, but Gen Olds was the BALLS. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Robin_Olds The problem with Yeager and Ritchie is that they were phenomenal fighter pilots that weren't successful combat leaders. Olds rocked it at every level. BTW, he grew out the 'stache as a big FU to the brass back at the Pentagon. At the time, he was bullet-proof. F-4 wing commander in Vietnam. Double ace, what the hell are the going to do to him and, BTW, when the last time you perfumed princes saw combat? In a lot of ways he is the USAF's version of Gen Patton. I called Obama the worst POTUS ever today, anda liberal -- who knows I'm Christian --actually told me that it was "Christian" of me to condemn Obama... I gave her a lesson on what the Bible means when it says we aren't to "judge"/"condemn" (that it means we arern't to condemn people to Hell since that's God's job) and that the Bible actually tells us to be "wise as serpents" and to "know" (i.e.judge) a man by his fruits. Chrsitians are to use their God-given brains for judgement and diescernment otherwise we'd have no judicial system or crime-fighters.
I also told her that I find it funny that non-believers are always telling Christians that we are mindless 'bots for believing the Bible (esp. regarding Creationism) yet the second we show discernment they bitch at us that we're "judging" them. RE: US military not behaving according to their doctrine. Research a thing called OODA. While it was originally a concept for fighter pilots, the concepts have been extended into many aspects where there is competition of any sort. The basic idea is to be aware of your situation and react before your enemy can react which sounds really simple but if your decision cycle is consistently faster than theirs, they are reacting to a reality that has changed before they realize that it has changed. The notion is to get "inside" their decision/reaction cycle and take away the initiative by having them become reactive because you A: didn't do what they expected you to do which causes them to throw all of their training out of the window and have to adapt B: yourself adapt to the situation as it unfolds and are able to decide and make adjustments faster than they can figure out what you are doing.
The notion is to be able to observe what is going on, make an assessment and react while the enemy is still somewhere earlier in that cycle. In the case where the enemy is relying on a specific response to a specific action relying on your doctrine and training to be HIS guide to your response, this can be fatal to the enemy if you do not react as expected. In the case of US forces, we have had for a long time a notion of adapting to situations as they unfold and most doctrine is only a guide to maybe an initial response and after that the notion is to take it as it comes and dish it out in return but to do it faster than the enemy can react to it. Additional concepts are to overload the enemy's input with conflicting information by adding what appears to be chaos to the system forcing attention to be focused on many things in order to ascertain which things are actually the threat. As you gum up their observation and decision cycle it begins slow down. Interesting stuff but the crux is to react FAST and in unexpected ways. One of the reasons I am asking people to call these assholes "slavers" (or Bers' contribution if you can remember the whole thing) is something I have concluded about most of the leftists for whom I still have hope -- they have serious inferiority/superiority issues. (ponder: why so many leftist PhDs--compensating for feelings of inferiority? countless other examples as well-- why all the superior act around Christians? Why the bullshit moral superiority about how much they care? etc, etc.) They are malleable and subject to shame. It is time to use it, because if we don't it will only be a matter of time before we have to fight to remain free. Presser for McCarver: It's the CAD-micro-lathed, denser-wooded, triple-lacquered bats, all the newer, smaller ballparks, the bats, double expansion, modern kinesiology and nutrition, the bats, body-armor at the plate allowing hitters to dig in, and the bats.
We would never dream of allowing pitchers to bring their own baseballs to the park, yet we allow hitters to not only bring their own bats, but also assorted bats engineered for different situations. We already found that out one of these days, yes. Like Gibson told you, "The only thing you know about pitching is that you can't hit it." Posted by: BuddyPC at May 04, 2012 09:43 AM (KCuY9) 617

Some will tell you that the most important unit in the Army is the squad, they are wrong. It is the LGOP, Little Group of Paratroopers. In the confusion of the drop zone a strange thing happens, individual paratroopers link up with each other, forming small bands of pissed off 19 year olds, who collectively remember the Commanders intent from their Operations Order as "Move to the sound of the guns and kill everyone not dressed like you." Happily they go about their business.
