| Overnight Open Thread (5-1-2012) - May Day EditionA Life in Full: Benzion Netanyahu Dies at Age 102 He was the father of current Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu. I had never heard of him before but his obituary is a fascinating read: Born Benzion Mileikowsky in Warsaw, Poland, in 1910 and moving to Mandatory Palestine in 1920, Netanyahu was a devout follower of revisionist Zionist leader Zeev Jabotinsky, who advocated Jewish military strength and the establishment of a Jewish state on both sides of the Jordan River. Netanyahu served as his personal aide until Jabotinsky's death in 1940. When you've seen your life's dream come to fruition and the least well-known of your children is merely a doctor and an acclaimed playwright, you've done quite well in life. And at the other end of the human spectrum... Do These Guys Seem Like The Type To Blow Up a Bridge? Well yeah if you're willing to give partial credit for trying and failing. I for one am glad to see that the #Occupiers are willing to hire the mentally challenged.
May Day - Live from Seattle genghis has been sending updates all day of what the Seattle anarchists are up to including links if you want to follow it live: Ahh, spring, when a young man's fancy turns to smashing windows and the heady smell of tear gas is in the air. How The Dalai Lama Became Instantly Uncool Can You Learn the Identity of a Car Owner with Their License Plate Number and Google? Well kind of but it takes some extra work: You would be surprised that even license plate information can be found online. An old trick I use to use back in the day was searching Government Smog check sites for the plate. Not only would they say if the car passed or not, often the website would list the smog shop that serviced the car or VIN # of the car. Then I would search on the VIN # for more details and/or ask the smog shop for the vehicle owner's information. If that doesn't work, Brandon also notes that there are a few other options available to you. While it's unlikely you'll be able to get the information covertly, you can use a Request for Record Information (INF 70) form to identify a car owner. Additionally, some states (like my home state of Minnesota allow you to go to a simple database site and pay a small fee. Tales of Good Fortune With Horribly Cruel Plot Twists Could be worse I guess. That's why i never watch the local news, they always follow the same template - airhead anchors give synopsis of story - dipshit field reporter gives same synopsis of story - videotape gives yet again same synopsis of story, in four minutes we hear the same damn thing three times, drives me nuts, just give me a paragraph or two on the web thanks. With text, I can assess the value rapidly and skim until I find something worth reading (or not). I think web video is easier to produce but that it is harder to extract and value from it. Text is also much less ambiguous. Posted by: Hrothgar at May 01, 2012 10:25 PM (i3+c5) 72

LOVE the photos of the Occupy bombers---especially the one of the boys who could be Barry's sons due to the jug-ear DNA (in reality I think they are the spawn of inbreeding in the mountains somewhere). Snort.
Just saw Weasel Zipper's video of the Kabul campaign stopalooza. I only watched until Barry skipped up the stage then muted and watched our troops. Man, compare the crowd noise to when President Bush used to visit the troops. Look at their faces.. They are not faking it for The Won, our boys and girls on the front line. Imagine being told, "We are bringing Chicago to YOU." Barf. Compare and contrast this limp video of SCOAMF to the youtube, "President Bush makes a surprise visit to Iraq" as the contrast is amazing (September 3, 2007). The troops roar when his name is announced. They are smiling with joy and pride behind him as he speaks. Oh! President George W. Bush rarely uses the word "I" in his speech to the troops that Labor Day. I miss him. And I thank him for his continued work with returning vets and wounded vets. God bless this man. God bless and protect our troops tonight and always. Posted by: ChristyBlinky Wildbeast Seminole Chick at May 01, 2012 10:27 PM (baL2B) 84

I'm so late I'm still thinking about the "gutsy call". Obama has no problem pulling the trigger when it comes to Sunni. It's Shia he won't touch. The pattern is clear. Saddam, Gaddafi, Taliban,Osama, kills without compunction. ..... Al Sadr, Iran, Assad,Hezbollah, kid gloves, baby. ;;;;; Understanding that Obama is Shia (common among richer Indonesians) makes things clear. #188, I await OWS/the usual trust-fund 'black block' anarchists to make the mistake of attacking stores in a Korean neighborhood in a shall issue permit state. It's the same small group of assholes traveling worldwide responsible for most of the damage. If some property owners or police actually dealt with them accordingly this bullshit would have been stopped years ago. The loons are a bunch of spoiled and bored idiots playing 'revolutionaries'. Not that much different from all the rich bastards playing Jihad from Saudi Arabia.

Meremortal- Interesting.
But let's not leave the Republicans out of this. I have noticed that it's the McCain contingent - the Bushites / neocons - who were so gung-ho about bringing Assad down and the Muslim Brotherhood into Syria. The McCain faction also was big on getting the MoBros into Libya. I mentioned already that this is not something I pin on American conservatives. The conservatives here, starting with (iirc) the Blogmocracy, have consistently said that meddling in Libya was folly and that meddling in Syria is unwise. But McCain and the mainstream Republicans have every bit as much to blame for the MidEast disaster as does Obama. Posted by: Boulder Toilet Hobo at May 01, 2012 10:59 PM (QTHTd) 216

Posted by: 18-1 at May 01, 2012 10:56 PM (3aXbg) ...And all that goes without mentioning that allegedly the police recovered GZ's gun with an empty casing in the barrel, implying the gun was unable to cycle normally, in which case (under normal conditions) the empty would have been ejected and a fresh round inserted. This implies that something was going on that prevented cycling. In an instance where this occurs, the most likely cause is some kind of pressure on the slide, such as the shootee grasping the weapon. It will be interesting to find out what kind of fingerprints were found on the weapon after it was taken into evidence, if any were recoverable. I think it's less thin-skinned than that he overreacts. He goes to 11 in about 2 seconds. Mind you, he and his family have been threatened, he's had a large number of lies told about him and false charges, and I think he lost a job somewhere along there. So I get the overreacting thing. He was a lot more lighthearted in the old days, before any of that came down. Now, more the cynic. I don't even look at Pat's now. lol. Yes, multiplayer for a hack-and-slash game with one main character. That's not even enough to put the series on life-support, but enough GoW fan-boys will buy it to probably give the developers a modest return for what will be a game comprised of discarded levels from other GoW games. I can't tell you how underwhelmed I am about GoW:Ascention, and that sentiment is coming from the guy who geeked out about GoW3 for about a year. Ugh. *NO ONE* should ever cooperate with them on this, Of course. I am horrified by the weak politicians on "our" side. Sometimes, I am. Other times, I am not. We have some strong pillars. Paul Ryan, patiently and persistently making his policy-geek points with his unanswerable numbers. Chris Christie, not the perfect conservative, but unmistakably a fighter. Allen West, a man who sees clearly and always stands up for what is right. Jim DeMint, who works steadily in the background to make common sense triumph. In some sense, I feel that these four do a great job of covering four distinct philosophical bases. Seems like a better crop than we had in the "Bob Dole is our nominee" days, to me. More focus. And what do our opponents have? Not much, from where I sit. One putative God, whose feet display their clay at pretty much every appearance now. "Not helpful." "It's O'Keeffe's plants." Other Kos Kidz lament: I find it pathetic that Daily Kos did not do any major stories on this historical day. Well, I didn't say I was horrified at the strong ones. Frankly, Christie is a fiscally conservative moderate at *best*. I know the East Coast Crowd sometimes don't get us Westerners (spits into spitoon) and our fascination with things that go bang - IMHO someone who doesn't "get" self-defense doesn't "get" freedom, period, ever. That person will always be an issue, because their core philosophy is different from our founding philosophy. And you didn't even mention Issa, who despite the glacial pace of certain issues has got a lot done. But the fact is we *are* in hugely worse shape as a country, both economically and in terms of freedom, and it's been getting worse almost my entire life. The fiscal progress of the Congress in the late 90s has been more than rolled back, and we've lost more territory on rights than we've won (significantly in the last few years). Good recipe you ask? Pillsbury Grand Dad buiscute things, for starters, baked to utter perfection.
Then a pound of Bov Evans sausage, get rid of grease. Also pour the hot rinse water from the pan over the sausage in a strainer. Then put the sausage back in the pan with a half stick of butter. Then put about 8 heaping tablespoons of flour and mix it. Then put a little less than a gallon of mile and put on low, stirring occasionally. Then put on high when it gets real hot and stir constantly till it gets real hot. Then shut off stove. And that there is perfect biscuts and gravy. Also use tobasco on the finished product and pepper throught the cooking. Posted by: Jimmah at May 02, 2012 12:28 AM (UpwlP) 371

For underrated blogs, there's Rachel Lucas (websearch it). She's back actually blogging again, with lovely text and images. Reminds me a lot of S Weasel, for that matter.
Lucas quit blogging for a while, then returned very briefly last year. Instapundit noted that return, but hasn't picked up on the actual blogging that's going on these days. I quite like Moe Lane, and the Advice Goddess blogs too. And, of course, Maggie's Farm and Small Dead Animals. Posted by: Looking Glass at May 02, 2012 01:12 AM (2J6Jv) 439

Clinton just said that the total worth of the USA (all real estate,
resources etc) is approx 60 trillion. So the debt isnt a big problem according to Clinton. *** So Clinton presumes the government will just nationalize all the private property in the US? Here is the easy way to explain it I think. Uncle Sam has a salary of about $50k a year. For the last three years he has spent $80k a year and claims he can't cut a single expense even though he was living on less then $50k as recently as 2005. Oh, and he owes $300k. He does have a few assets (mineral assets, land)...but he claims those are naughty and can't be used. Posted by: 18-1 at May 02, 2012 01:23 AM (3aXbg) 451

*** If his answer the debt bomb is "15T is nothing, we've got $60T in assets", it means that he is considering all those assets as things the government could take to pay off the debt. This ignores the cumulative state, local, business, and individual debts though too... It has happened many times by the way - the Soviet Union, China, etc. Not that I actually think Clinton means that - he's repeating a stupid talking point - but it would be good for someone to challenge him on the implication of the talking point. I think the Enterprise has a dampening field for that. Every time there's "the most dangerous foe ever!" or "we can save Worf with unapproved technology" Crusher is right there, like some damned Nancy Pelosi, saying, "Wait, let's listen to their side of things! Maybe we're being too hasty! Also, if I didn't develop the tech (or some other Prog Dem didn't) then it is clearly morally wrong!" Worst character ever. I hate to think of what she'd do if she met the Space Hippies from "The Way to Eden." Or the brain-killers from "Operation: Annihilate!" But...just think about how it will look when you are old and wise and
saggy and in a completely different part of life. If you like the image, then what the hell. However, I used to do tons of hiring, and tattoos were an immediate mental red mark. To be honest, I'm mostly just bored and trying to make conversation. I've given it a passing thought in times past, at least for something small that related to my military experience and religious beliefs. However, it's not something that I'm seriously considering. Anyone who gets a tattoo that they cannot conceal in professional business attire is an idiot and deserves to not be hired. Posted by: Alex at May 02, 2012 02:23 AM (zSobX) 533

Further thoughts on tats --
When I graduated college at 20, it seemed like forever before I'd be 21 -- even though it was a bit less than eight months. Now, in the year I'll turn 50, I'll look around for something I just put down.....and realize that had to have been six or eight years previous [although sometimes it's still there -- yay!]. If you're 25, and thinking about a tat, you're thinking of how striking it'll look for the next few years. But, way sooner than you think, you'll be 40 -- and it'll look like something from Dali on your pasty-white beer-belly.....and, what's worse, the time between it being cool and becoming an embarrassment will seem like an instant in your memory. But every day you'll get to see it as it is that day. Posted by: cthulhu at May 02, 2012 02:25 AM (kaalw) 538

Good Star Trek episode as to ultimate liberalism: "Let That Be Your Last Battlefield." Yeah, think about it.
Tattoos, to me and probably only me, say certain things: "I have fifty dollars and it's burning a hole in my pocket." "I MUST gratify every impulse I have immediately. Time to reflect is for idiots." "Tomorrow? There is no such thing. What a stupid concept! Tomorrow!" "All decisions must be made at once and with no looking back. Thinking about things is for Republicans or Conservatives. ICK!" Most egregious sin: Convinced Picard not to eradicate the Borg. Leaving aside that this would have altered the 2008 election by keeping Jeri Ryan an obscure actress and less likely to have a messy divorce, it lead to massive suffering of the Enterprise crew just a few years later. Surely there is a deleted scene in 'First Contact' where Picard turns on Crusher and mutters, "This is all your fault, you bleeding heart ninny." On to The Peacekeeper Wars! Posted by: Robert at May 02, 2012 02:26 AM (4ixH5) Farscape is the true Moron's Science Fiction series. Or, sort of Comic Science Fantasy Action Porn series. It has nudity, sex, gun battles, giant spaceships, giant living spaceships, evil empires, powerful, uncaring government, fart jokes, Three Stooges jokes, sexy aliens, a guy with a nuclear weapon on his belt, an alien that humps people's legs, and a woman that can do things with her tongue that will make your legs weak. Someone is going to have to explain Groupon to me. I never liked the idea of buying coupons. I mean, doesn't that defeat the purpose? Why spend X amount of dollars to get Y percent off when both added together practically negate the amount saved. Or maybe it's cause I live in an area that's got fuck all going for it and nothing good to do. Maybe it's best in big cities like New Yawk and El Ay. Bumfuck border town ain't got shit worth mentioning. Maybe that's it. Still, the whole system seems weird to me.
Buying a coupon as a gift, I could kinda see. Kind of a cheap, shitty gift, but a gift. Like a few months ago, my dear old mom bought a bunch of IHOP coupons so I could take her to breakfast a bunch. And...it kinda worked actually. The coupons cost $15 bucks. One coupon was for a kids meal. Trash. Four coupons were for free pancakes, which IHOP gives out anyway. The rest were buy one meal get one free. Okay, that was cool. And the BOGOs were mostly used up save for, like, one. I can't remember how many BOGOs there were, but they accounted for the majority. Still, once you knock out the shitty useless ones, the cost per BOGO increases. And they expire on top of that. Huh? That's retarded. So that one that never got used never got used because it expired. Fucking gay. I'm not really going anywhere with this. I'm just...kvetching, I think is the term. So, who likes hot pussy? http://tinyurl.com/6o5s9yt Posted by: Robert, just sorta rambling here at May 02, 2012 03:31 AM (4ixH5) 607

Robert, groupon is like any other deal site. You pretty much have to know exactly what you're looking for, and have a detailed plan.
I used to make a (insert metaphor here)-load of money on coupon/gift-card/rebate/sale deals, which I would turn around and sell. I once bought ten PDAs at like $200 off each, turned around and made about $1000 in 3 days. In my spare time while working. *BUT* for the most part deals like that are gone. I jumped in at the trailing edge of the wave for that kind of thing, between the recession (now depression) and all the idiots selling at a loss on eBay, I stopped doing that. Posted by: chemjeff at May 02, 2012 05:53 AM (7FadD) == No. Gas is no problem. Plenty of stops on a regular spacing. The Alaska Highway has a few branches and there are some great ways to do a trip -- some of your options are: Take a ferry from Bellingham WA up the inside passage to Haines or Skagway, then drive (or vice versa) -- Take the Cassiar Highway - very rural, usually see a lot of black bears and caribou -- // Take the Alaska Highway, but take the branch thru Jasper thru Edmonton, Calgary, etc. // Take the Alaska Highway, skip Jasper and route down thru Dawson Creek // You can cross the Canadian border lots of places -- several in WA State, my favorite is north of Grand Coolee // or in ID north of Bonner's Ferry, or even further east into Montana. You can also route back west to Vancouver and cross near Blaine. All of these are worth it. I urge people to make a loop -- go up one way and back another. I don't dispute the article - but I *have* a PhD from Cornell University in Semitic languages in literature from their Department of Near Eastern Studies and I do not recall the name Netanyahu being mentioned. Going to ask - might have missed it somehow.

At the college where I work, I spotted a graffito on a men's room wall. (Students rarely go in for graffiti these days): "Support Obama: 2012!"
I came back with, "He doesn't need supporters; he IS one. (An athletic supporter)" Now a new fresh-faced emptyhead has rejoined with "He supports fairness, equality, and all that's best in America!!" I was going to reply (I'm easily entertained) with "Fairness: code word for COMMUNISM" or "Obama hates America, democracy, and, probably, YOU." Any other suggestions? The funnier the better!
