If you haven't seen it yet (I hadn't), the Agitator compiled the mostly-leftist law-bloggers who say the Zimmerman indictment is a piece of crap. It's not my area of expertise, but these people seem quite confident about the extracrapitudinosity of the charging document. TPM, a leftist site but go with it, has a chart documenting Romney's favorability surge. The same thing will explain Romney's surge against Obama, sure to be documented in the next few national polls. Honestly, it's stupid that Romney's surges are surprising to anyone. Last week Romney was barely supported by a majority---if that---of Republicans, about half of whom spent the past year hating on him. So it should have been no surprise at all that he wasn't carrying away the polls. As his support firms up among Republicans, it's no freakin' wonder that his numbers stack up better against Obama. That federal law allows voters to fill out a mail-in voter registration card and swear they are citizens under penalty of perjury, but it doesn't require them to show proof as Arizona's law does.

Obama ate dog when he was a kid. The big deal about this is not that he did so, but rather as an adult he actually wrote about it likeit was a badge of honor.

See, that's a "something" we should be mocking. It shows a) his incredible Pride, b) that there's no justification for same, and c) how much of an embarrassment he is on World affairs. None of those are things desirable in a President.

You know, beyond checking out the neighborhood generally (are the houses generally well kept? The yards? etc.), I've never bothered to pay that much attention to the color of a house that would be across the street from me when house-hunting. I just can't see a neighboring house being painted Pepto-bismol pink being a reason not to purchase a house I otherwise wanted.

I fondly remember the fall of 2004 digging into the internals of the polls as they were released. Figuring out which ones were viable and which ones were crap. Had some guy who had worked internal polling for a few campaigns teaching a bunch of us how it is done.

I've met a few people in my life. Many of them were dog people. I'm a dog people. I broke down more over having to put down my dog last year than I did when my Grampa died. (In fairness, Grampa wanted to die, and was 92 years old; he deserved the rest). None of those people would be horrified by the fact that someone (even the President) ate dog as a child.
And saying "Obama eats dog" (note the present tense) is dangerously disingenuous. Unfortunately, unlike Democrats (whose entire world-view is based on lies), Republicans don't get to lie. It's unfair, but it's true. And that's a piddly little lie that could, nevertheless, do considerable damage to our standing in the eyes of people who are in that "mushy middle."

Where it went off the rails is they fell into the trap of their own biases. They assumed that the picture they were going to paint of Ann was true. She is clueless and unworldly, because she isn't qualified to leave the house and work in the real world. It never occurred to them that she is actually intelligent, articulate, and sympathetic, having actually chosen to be a stay at home mother. That is something that is nonsensical in their world view, therefor can not enter their planning process. It's a scenario that is impossible, because it doesn't exist.
They set a trap, and got caught in it.

It may be useful as a fire-break against Mitt putting his dog on top of his car, but that's about it. If it is, well... fine. Use it that way. But it's not something that deserves a lot of attention.
I'm just saying there are things that deserve a lot more attention: like the TSA searching bus passengers in Houston. That's a big thing. That's a great big "Federal Government shoving it's nose where it doesn't belong" thing.
Also, the fact that the majority of riders on Grey Hound are minorities should give a lot of ammunition. In how many other cities are the TSA doing this?

On the horse thing... Am I the only person who knows that horse was domesticated partly as a food animal? Just like cows were domesticated both as work animals and food animals? Our European cousins were eating horse until the last few centuries, in places, and it wasn't unheard of in America, either.
I like horses, I really do- I wish I had land enough (and money enough) to own some. But it doesn't hurt my feelings that they'll be slaughtered any more than Deer or Elk farms bother me. No one is telling you to buy the meat, or sell any horses you own to the slaughterhouse.

It's an interesting cultural difference. Horses, dogs and cats are an integral part of American culture, and most people recoil at the idea of them being used for food. But Indians (dot, not feather) are repulsed by beef, and that's just nuts!
Also...the law of unintended consequences applies here. Horses that are not sent to slaughterhouses may end up abandoned.

I managed to pull off the wedding for around $10k (give or take a few thousand in rounding and how you calculate some costs as "wedding related" or "other" like flying in my sister-in-law) that included my wife's dress.
In order to do that however, I first: Had to know a professional baker who made our cake at less than cost ($250 for a 125 person cake with imported Fondant, just tobe clear, I didn't want the imported fodant, but apparently the delicious icing was melting from the heat and said Baker wanted the cake to look pretty so she went to her secret stash of fancy.)
Secondly, the wife bought the dress at one of those charity events.
Thirdly, find a reception area that's not usually considered (and thus not as popular). I used to work at my alma mater's "external events" department, so I knew they did weddings (in beautiful rooms even, wood inlay from the original 1879 building) and that they were slashing prices to try and undercut everyone.
Fourthly, skimp on flowers (Just bouquets and such for the wedding party and some pew bows, no alter flowers or flowered centerpieces at the reception.
Plus some other crap. And I still hit 5 figures. Yeah, expesnive.

Well, our bride's and groom's cakes were made for free by a lady from church. So we only had to buy the main "wedding cake." We did a period wedding (that is: Renaissance) and our clothes were made by a friend who does costumes for the SCA. My Aunt has a beautiful house with a great room that could double as a cathedral- and sort of did. My mom had (at that time, they've since downsized) a house with a huge room for the reception. Most of the decorations were hand made by us or friends, as were our invitations.
It did help that any out-of-state relatives paid their own airfare, except my mother-in-law, who couldn't afford it.

I know plenty of retriever owners who transport their dogs in crates in the back of pickup trucks to go hunting. How is this any different?

There's a slight difference between strapping a dog crate down in the bed of a truck (or hauling a horse trailer), and strapping a dog crate to the top of a car. Denying that doesn't actually help.
That said, I think that's an even more over-blown story than "Obama ate dog!!11!!!eleventy!" Sometimes you don't have room for everyone and everything, and you do the best you can. What might help is if he can try to spin it as a funny "What the heck was I thinking?" anecdote.

It's a darn shame, because a lot of them will die from exposure or hunger, and many will fall victims to predators like the newly sighted cougars which are apparently making a resurgence.
AllenG, if present tense bothers you so much, then look at it this way:
Obama ate a dog and bragged about it in his book.
The operative thing here, really, is that he had no clue that this was something that would repulse a lot of people. It would have jumped out at me if I had been reading the book, but when he was running in 2008 I didn't want to buy it and give him money.
I am going to look in the remainder bin and buy it however, to see what other things are in there.
You are quite right that this isn't a very important issue. However, every little issue like this takes away a few votes, and so we press on, chipping at his support and his image.

Lucky you I suppose. Sadly we had none of that. Catering was the bulk of our cost at about 5600 IIRC. That included an open bar though where they ran out of gin and vodka before we even got there.
Oh remember that part about how I used to work for the external events department? Yeah, so I had a cell phone full of higherups who don't like to be bothered on a Saturday night. A few well placed words later and we had an open bar that didn't close after 4 hours like we paid (I finally called it quits after something like 5.5 hours). And to make up for the cheap vodka they bought (we paid for "premium" i.e. Sky, we got popov) and the lack of gin they broke out the 20 year old Scotch from the "VIP event" case.
I did complain monday morning, but didn't care to much to follow up (and catering never called me back.) My old friends in the office delivered my (vugler) words to them though. Beautiful room we had, I still wouldn't reccomend it to others based on the idiots in catering.

Stop trying to defend the indefensible. It was poor judgement, nothing worse than that. As has been pointed out, it's no where near the poor judgement necessary to increase the debt by more than all the previous Presidents combined in less than 4 years.

Once again: Mitt had a special crate made for the dog with a wind screen, which ATTACHED to the roof of the car. The dog LIKED it. The dog got diarrhea from eating something, not out of fear.

My son was a catcher (me, too). He decided not to play this year (he's a sophomore in high school, now) and it's killing me a little bit, but he hates the head coach and has decided to devote himself to training for football, so my baseball days, like his, are over. I do, however, still have a softball player.
Enjoy your youngster while he'll still let you, and take lots and lots of pictures/video. These days, they go by too fast...
