| Overnight Open Thread![]() Antoinette Galluzzo embezzled $50,000 in funds earmarked for a kids summer camp. The city fired her, so she cashed in her public employee pension. Then she went on unemployment. But the best part? Superior Court Judge Eugene Austin ruled that she doesn't have to go to jail, but yes, she has to pay back the $50,000. Well some of it anyway. At $10 per month. Only for the three years of her probation though. After that, if the kids who got screwed want to recoup the remaining money they'll have to sue her in civil court. Positive Effects Of Alcohol ![]() Scientists have revealed a compound found in red wine can help control obesity. The substance, called piceatannol, delays the generation of young fat cells and prevents them from growing into mature fat cells. The compound blocks insulin's ability to activate genes that carry out further stages of fat cell formation. The heart-healthy agent found in the grape-based beverage is also thought to protect the body from heart and neurodegenerative diseases and cancer.I have found over the years that this is true as well. Alochol Sharpens The Mind. It is thought alcohol hinders analytical thinking and allows 'creative' thoughts that might otherwise by stifled to take root, allowing test subjects to come up with more imaginative solutions. Half the group drank the equivalent of two pints of beer before doing the tests, while the rest carried them out sober. The drinking group solved nearly 40 per cent more problems than the others, and took an average of 12 seconds compared to the 15.5 seconds needed by sober subjects. In Living Color On April 22nd, Fox is doing a special In Living Color reunion. This show was great when it was on back in the early 90's. Hopefully they'll bring the funneh like they did here in The 15 Best In Living Color Skits. Perhaps they could do The Reverend Wright and Barack Obama Comedy Hour skit? Vortex On The Sun Freaky. ![]() ![]() Anti-Pirate Pron Pirates Decimated By Shipboard Security Team. Wish the video was better. And it would've been nice if the security team had maybe a Mk 38 Mod 2 25mm machine gun or a GAU-17/A Minigun or even a Mk 19 Grenade Launcher. ![]() Comments1

Nietzsche is not remembered for the aphorism: “I’m big and I’m beautiful, maybe you just can’t handle a full-figured woman!!!”
*** One thing I think we could well use for Nietzsche is his embrace of philosophical "ad hominem". Or in other words, ask yourself if the person preaching a particular philosophy is living it himself. Now, real philosophy is tough to adhere to, true. But, if you can't be bothered to stop taking charter flights, maybe we shouldn't be that concerned with the effect heating our house is having on mother Gaia... Never heard that one but have heard of the college experiment whereby participants would take a drink, then push a car to the end of a table without going over. It seems 40% got better as they got more alcohol. Of course there is always the point that one is too drunk to function but for a while there, some folks improved. Much like I used to shoot pool. Between 3 and 12 beers, I was steady as a rock. After that, I was drunk and couldn't shoot for shit. So then I drove home! Speaking Truth to Power
But the edgier and more negative tone coming from the president’s re-election is highlighting another issue. Successful campaigns tell positive stories even while they are in knife fights, and even as it steps up an effort to define Mr. Romney on its terms, the White House is working to make a positive case for Mr. Obama, one built around themes of fairness and security. Judging by the difficulties he has had selling his policies and himself for the last three years, going positive in an effective way could prove to be more challenging for Mr. Obama than going negative. Posted by: History... at April 14, 2012 11:21 PM (lZBBB) Sort of, as was my family, though there was no such thing as "France" at the time - Norman is probably more accurate. My people ended up in modern-day Britain in 1066 with Billy the Conqueror. After that, they became Irish, to the point that what few ancestors we've been able to track down came to America during the famine with no money or ancestral holdings. buzzion, I think it is meant to show how over the top torture porn movies have become by taking standard horror movie tropes and amping them up. But, nothing is as it really seems. Reading the spoilers was a bit disappointing because now I know the "secret" but at the same time, it made me want to see the movie even more.

JJS, I watched it on Netflix. I guess it was on PBS here. The second season just got through airing a month ago I guess. There will be a 3rd season, but it will be on in England first and then here.
It's a pretty good slice of time starting in 1912 and going on up from there, linking real historical events to the changes happening in England in terms of the peerage etc. It also does a good job illustrating the "upstairs/downstairs" part of British life during that time period. Blanchard, Michael "Flathead" 1944 ~ 2012 A Celebration of the life of Michael "Flathead" Blanchard will be held on April 14th, 3 pm 8160 Rosemary St, Commerce City. Weary of reading obituaries noting someone's courageous battle with death, Mike wanted it known that he died as a result of being stubborn, refusing to follow doctors' orders and raising hell for more than six decades. He enjoyed booze, guns, cars and younger women until the day he died. Mike was born July 1944 in Colorado to Clyde and Ethel Blanchard. A community activist, he is noted for saving the Dr. Justina Ford house from demolition and defending those who could not defend themselves. He was a Republican delegate, life member of the NRA, founder and President of the Dead Cats MC. He loved music. Mike was preceded in death by Clyde and Ethel Blanchard, survived by his beloved sons Mike and Chopper, former wife Jane Transue, brother Stephen Blanchard (Susan), Uncle Don and Aunt Cynthia Blanchard(his favorite); Uncle Dill and Aunt Dot, cousins and nephews, Baba Yaga can kiss his butt. So many of his childhood friends that weren't killed in Vietnam went on to become criminals, prostitutes and/or Democrats. He asks that you stop by and re-tell the stories he can no longer tell. As the Celebration will contain Adult material we respectfully ask that no children under 18 attend. Posted by: Jumbo Jogging Shrimp at April 15, 2012 12:39 AM (DGIjM) 408

My first marriage was like yours Gushka. It was horrible. You are right it feels very weird sometimes the way he treats me. But it has never been scary with him. Even the way he told he told me he loved me. I was trying to figure out the coffee maker this morning. He came up behind me and wrapped his arms around me and just said you know I love you right? Just the way he said it. It wasn't a maybe or something he had to think about. He was sure of it. It was just so like him. Sorry, I'm babbling again. With my first husband it was just awful. He cheated on me all the time. I stayed I because I didn't want to be like my mom and go through boyfriend after boyfriend. It was so stupid. I finally left when he started hitting me. I was scared all the time back then. He stalked me for quite a while after the divorce. It was just awful. I didn't date for a long time after the divorce and when I finally did it wasn't good. Then I met Stuck. Even the first night we met I just knew he was different. He makes me laugh and he makes me feel safe. I just know I can trust him and I've never felt that way with anyone.

... and, speaking of George Zimmerman ...
There was a gun show today (and tomorrow) at The Cow Palace (SF, CA). The line at 10:00AM to get tickets must have been 200 yards long, perhaps 500 people. While in line, I watched the people leaving the show ... very many of them with handtrucks of ammo. One guy carried 2 boxes, probably 1000 rounds each. He was straining, and had to stop occasionally, to recover from the weight. People are motivated. I think the JEF will suffer an un-presidented loss in November ... any plans Holder has to grab guns, incite riots, etc.,will have to happen very soon ... and yet, I don't see riots ... too much ammo in circulation ... Coincidentally, with the large ammo purchases, or maybe ironically (or perhaps leadically) I expect the Fast and Furious investigation to heat up in June ... Hummingbird did yu know that i am training a couple colts and maybe one of my barren mares for medieval mounted combat? I am the very steriotypical redhead, hotheaded and vengeful. Grim is convinced the ex sat on me so hard because he was scared of me.
anyway last year i got tired of this one guy in the competitions who had trained his big ol horse to shove around my friends' very polite little horses and intimidate them with his stallion, while he whupped up on them with a vulcanized rubber mace. So i have this Big black gelding who has a wide streak of honey badger and a little golden mare who is flat out intelligent and mean. I plan to fix his little red wagon with them. And i got this sweet little blood bay colt that will do anything for me cuz he just loves me like that, including take a whupping from a much bigger horse and just stand while i fight the other rider.... I am really curious which one of these horses is gonna fuck him up worst. IM hoping it will be the little tiny mean golden pony. Shes a beautiful piece of work, and it think Sir Clompety Clomp deserves to have his ass handed to him by a girl on a PONY. What do you think? IM just mean that way. Posted by: Hummingbird at April 15, 2012 02:20 AM (R5yLq) striking the opponents horse on purpose is unsporting. i wont do that.but i dunno. we shall see. i dont know if the bay is braver than he is small and light. hes built like a medium size thoroughbred. The black colt loves me but is built like a brick shithouse (we also taught him tricks, which makes him amusing company.) I saved each one from certain death, so they all freakin love me. The black and the tiny mare were saved from starvation, the bay from bad injuries, so complicated nobody wanted to fuck with him. But those injuries make him kinda weak. I'd just hate for Sir Clompety Clomp to knock him over, and wreak his confidence in me. That black on the other hand may very well take that act the stallion pulls and pull it right back on him. I will report back on my practice sessions with my friend. My armour is fairly light being leather or a canvas and plate brigandine. i have to see how i will fight this dude. I may use a mace and then again i may use a rattan can sword. really depends on how i do against my pals. we will round robin the horses against each other and i will see what they all do. All of them wear neck and head armour. they get pretty used to the sounds going on, and the fact the chanfron (head armour) protects them. But i would never hit one on purpose. you can paralyze one like that. That dude may kinda be a creep but its not the horse's fault. Ayn Rand was into BDSM and Poly relationships, so she really wasnt interested in portraying traditional morality. She did her own thing. Therefore Dagny reflects that sort of morality. I still love her. Tarnished and frail heroes are ever so much more fun. I cried bitterly when Cheryl Taggart jumped off the bridge when she realized just what a creep she had married.

More penguin problems.....holy shit, they are making their move. World dominance is their game:
That is correct. We have twice as many penguins in Antarctica than scientists thought, a count by satellite revealed. Far from being a species endangered by the carelessness of man, scientists say we have nearly 600,000 emperor penguins. The scientists counted 44 colonies of these birds — including 7 previously unknown. Counting penguins in Antarctica is so easy, I may apply for the job because they are black and white against the snows of Antarctica. PS I have links for this crazy stuff I'm posting, but I'm lazy. She desperately wanted me to feel happy and safe again. but then she was older, about 18 though brain damaged, so she always seems about 15. That little rotter conspired against me! i think the quality of the men and the depth of the relationship really make a difference. I pretty much never do anything that meaningless, which was one thing that made it so hard for me to get dating. So she got my friends to "just happen" to have him around, after they had him rescue me while i was too sick to escape or resist. Theres something a woman just cant resist about a marine coming in to do her dishes and take out the trash and clean the kitchen while shes sick. Its undeniably seductive. Bonding with a partner can lead to a relationship to be proud of.....but if your self-esteem is largely dependent on a particular relationship, chances are that relationship is dysfunctional; having sex with a friend can be a happy time -- using sex to have friends is a flashing neon sign saying "PROBLEMS!" Posted by: gushka haz a new Kitty what plays fetch! ! at April 15, 2012 03:27 AM (r7Ddb) Then, again, having "friends" merely in order to maintain a stable of sex partners isn't very pretty, either. There are honorable, pleasurable, and fun ways of maneuvering through the thicket; and there are vile, degrading, and damaging ways as well -- and the distinctions can be subtle if someone attempts to describe the behavior involved from the outside. It's somewhat easier to know from the inside. Posted by: cthulhu at April 15, 2012 03:34 AM (kaalw) 743

Oh that is wonderful! I love it. I don't think Sissy will admit it but I think she was trying to set me up with Stuck. Sissy and I have always been very close. I was ten when she was born and our mom was an alcoholic. I took care of Sissy because mom couldn't or wouldn't. We both have different fathers and mom brought more boyfriends home than I can count. I thank God everyday for Sissy. Without her I probably would have ended up just like mom. But I couldn't because I had to take care of her. I got married at nineteen and Sissy came to live with us, I'm not sure mom even noticed. She hated Scott even before she found out he was a cheating scumbag. I never saw it back then but she did! You're supposed to sign a piece of paper and be ready to die for each other, when twenty minutes before your feelings were merely aspirations. Things develop over time, and there are always setbacks and problems, but once you get the hang of getting past them you end up stronger than ever. Once one of you has tended the other through an extended illness, you both know, "I can concentrate on healing without worry, because even if it takes months s/he'll be there for me." HB --
I guess where I'm going with this is that things can grow -- but only if you have the right seeds in the proper environment. We know Stuck is funny, smart/witty, concerned about honor and correct behavior, and courageous (because nobody ever shows courage by saying, "I'm brave, I'm brave, I'm brave" -- they show it by going, "ready or not, here I go........"). We know you're funny, smart/witty, and concerned about right and wrong, as well. We know that you've been thrown together by an outlandish and surreal set of coincidences and circumstances, and that you've hit it off. That's a really great start. What grows from here will be shaped partly by external events, but mainly by the two of you. I had spent some time with the BH when the 1989 earthquake hit here -- I briefly made sure that my apartment wasn't on fire (I had been home sick for the day) and made my way to her workplace (which was heavily damaged and later condemned). Finding this vacant, I pressed on to her apartment and made sure she was safe. Then, with no power, we went out and found dinner. External event -- earthquake; relationship -- strengthened. I had a situation where a routine doctor visit turned into a nightmare -- I had prescription antibiotics that caused a severe reaction and the doctor refused to consider the antibiotics the problem until I had a 106-degree fever, was delirious, and broke out in spots from head-to-toe. The BH took care of me through that. External event -- malpractice; relationship -- strengthened. You don't look to test your relationship -- life does that. But each time you overcome some situation, you can look back and say "we worked well together." We're going on our third decade. But it's been building all along. Cthulhu, you are a madman. When you stole that cow, and your friend
tried to make it with the cow? I want to party with you, cowboy. Posted by: John Winger at April 15, 2012 04:31 AM (4ixH5) For some reason, I spent a lot of my time in Junior High and High School playing games. In Junior High, we had a word-association game we called "THIMK". You and your friends took turns responding to words that you called out, trying to avoid a high score. Scoring events were: non-sequitur, 2 points; repitition, 5 points; time-out, 10 points. Sample play: game, board, nail, finger, accuse, defend, fortress, castle, rook, cheat, fair, booth, game -- repetition, 5 points. But I digress -- one from High School was "the elevator game". Whenever you get into a confined space with someone not in the clique, you start a story (in the middle) that is surreal, suggestive, and engaging....ending only when the outsider leaves the group. The object is to out-weird your group and freak-out the stranger. Sample play: (clique in elevator) "I hope he's there." (stranger gets on elevator) "....and the party was getting a little beyond what I expected." "Well, you could have expected the dwarf -- he's been at each of the last four." "Mike? Oh, yeah, he and I have become good buds -- he showed me a trick about tying my toga that's done wonders for having it fit better......no, it was that other chick and her little show." "The thing with the ping-pong balls?" "I've seen that done better. No, the thing with the donkey." "Yeah, seriously, chocolate sauce?!?!??" (stranger gets off elevator) "Did you see that guy's EYES?!?!?" Posted by: cthulhu at April 15, 2012 04:49 AM (kaalw) 836

Not as many of those shelters around as you might think. Most of us just rely on a basement,,, or go outside and watch.

Glad things are better Deety. Hope it keeps going for ya!
Posted by: teej at April 15, 2012 06:28 AM (d+1xu) 897
Last week folks were saying that a basement is not a good location unless you built in a steel or concrete inner room.
Looking on the 'net it looks like a concrete shelter with a capacity of 3 to 5 people runs between 3K and 5K plus labor for installation. I would think installing it sub-grade away from the house and trees would be preferable. I would also rig some kind of antenna for a cell phone so I could call out in the event the door was blocked. I just hope this vast line of storms doesn't mean Jane D'oh! and I will be exchanging WX reports from coastal Georgia like we did this same time last year.
And as far as SOS's & hummingbird's story goes? It's a nice story. Whatever the reality really is. That last night my Emily was alive I passed her in the kitchen and patted her fanny... and she turned and said "Oh, you like that do you?" ...and I told her "Yeah, I like you a lot..." Last year at this time we had tornadoes and hail here in SC. By apple trees and cherry tree were in full bloom and it literally striped them.

I planted a peach and a plumb last fall. The plumb won't do anything until I get another one to put next to it but there must be 30 baby peaches on the other. I'm gonna have to check but I'll probably have to clip most of those off. I can't imagine that 5 foot tree and little limbs being able to handle the weight of that much mature fruit.

Emily & I had 25 years together and with a bad heart ( which was not known until autopsy ) she could have dropped dead at any time. We just did not know. So instead of thinking of her young death as a tragedy I try to think "well, every year I had her was a bonus & a blessing. I was lucky to have had her for as long as I did." With regards to Romney, motherhood, public relations, and chess.... I can't shake the feeling that the Romney got set up in a major way.
Hot on the heels of all the talk about how Democrats don't support mothers... there is supposedly some video where Romney is basically saying that women, even with very young kids, have to go to work. Something to the effect that staying home isn't an option. And that parents who don't work need to learn the dignity of work, by working outside of the home. You kind of wonder if maybe the same PR consultants are working for both parties... because the Rosen flap, the Obama response, the Romney response, and then these videos (if they exist)... it almost seems like it was tailor made to make Romney look like a hypocrite, out of touch with middle class people, elitist, etc. Posted by: blip at April 15, 2012 07:48 AM (JzVFc) 907
