It's Not 2008 Anymore: Seven Ways In Which 2012 Is Different

Nothing super-surprising, but something to keep in mind.

2012 will be a referendum, not a choice. One of the best established findings of contemporary political science is that in presidential contests involving an incumbent, the incumbent’s record is central to the public’s judgment. A race for an open Oval Office is about promises and personalities; a campaign for reelection is about the record and performance of the person currently occupying the White House. To be sure, Obama can offer his vision for the future and new proposals to flesh it out. But if the people don’t approve of his record, that won’t matter much.

No more promises of bipartisanship. Obama will have to abandon—or at least radically modify—the promise to heal a polarized political system that was at the heart of his rise to national prominence, starting with his dramatic address at the 2004 Democratic convention. And because his inability to foster this reconciliation has disappointed many people who voted for him in 2008, he’ll have to explain why he couldn’t do it in a way that redirects that disappointment toward the Republican Party and its nominee.

The most important one may be No More "Yes We Can." Obama ran in 2008, in his own words, as a "blank screen" upon which voters could "project" their hopes. He could be anything they wanted to be -- those who wanted a pragmatic problem-solver who was "post-partisan" could see that (and an impeccably creased trouser). Those who wanted a left-wing Black Hope could see that.

Well, he's not Everything to Everybody any longer. He has a record. He is not a pragmatic, post-partisan problem-solver. He is a stubborn and ignorant liberal with radical tendencies.

And he's failed. We are not faced with the interesting dilemma of policies that diminished freedom and the concept of America and yet, somehow, revved up the economy.

We're facing policies which diminished freedom, and America, and also led to the worst recession since the Great Depression.

That's not a hard call.

37 Ace--

We're facing policies which diminished freedom, and America, and also led to the worst recession since the Great Depression.

*********

The "diminished" freedom part--we are facing an encroachment on that--like we have never seen before.

The more and more I look into the "individual mandate" argument the scarier it gets.

The individual mandate--for the first time defines a citizen as--active--according to the formulas of a private industry. (health care insurers)

That's gawd damn crazyville.

No longer will the locus of control be with the individual to decide for themselves whether or not they are active, or to engage in commerce--they will be determined to be active by some external locus of control--a business formula and/or act of Congress.

Once an individual has no responsibility for their own actions--and the locus of control is external--well-- that's the very definition of-

insanity.

Weft,
One problem with hitting President Obama on gas prices is that they will go down again in September and October. This is a Spring through July issue.

We need to hit him on multiple issues, and unemployment is a biggie. The numbers may appear to be good, but everyone is scared for their job, or a family members job, or know people who have been out of work.

The debt is another one. Barack has run up as much debt in 3 years as Bush did in 8 years. How much will we have after 8 years of Obama?

117 I am generally loathe to get all wishy washy feeling oriented but does it not seem that obama and his team have lost the narrative? the vigor with which they strode through washington is gone. the enthusiasm the media had in his early days is gone. everyone is mouthing the words, singing the song but no one believes them anymore. the white mosque is going through the motions and trying every dirty trick in their book but is as if they feel compelled to follow an emergency checklist to make sure they have done all of the require things before punching out, it is all theatre now.

no need to get complacent and it would be unwise to do so but I do not think anyone in the administration has the wherewithal to win. they may have the wherewithal to throw sand in the gears and wreck the place on their way out the door, and I am not thinking of removing letters from keyboards, but that is all they have.

I know they were bought for the PA primary, but since he needs to spend all his primary money anyway he might as well run them here and define huimself positively before the Democrat attack machine can get going. The Crossroads PAC is going to beat the shit out of Obama on the economy and gas prices. I saw one of its ads last night on gas prices and it is a killer.

I and a lot of people I know have very long commutes, and these gas prices are killing us. The "commuter states" like New Jersey and Pennsylvania are definitely in play this year. The polls look very bad for Dems all the way down the ticket here - even Bob Menendez only leads by 9 points. I think Bob Casey is in trouble in PA too.

I suspect that trying to play the reverse race card would be more likely to backfire. We don't want to give them reason to 'rally around the flag'.

In 2008 in my mixed-race neighborhood there were a lot more black folks at the polling place than I normally see, especially young blacks who weren't registered (MN has same-day registration).

I don't think they need to be reminded that Obama hasn't made all their dreams come true. They already know, even if reluctant to admit it. Shoving it in their face might not be a good idea.

90% are Black, lots with old 2008 stickers. The other 10% appear to be a) gheys, in the Subarus with the coexist stickers, b) union workers with and AFL-CIO sticker, or C) unshaven unemployed hippies.

Noticeably absent are the rich mommies with the big Suburbans.

Well, now I am depressed too.

196 obama is able to grant any pardon he wants whenever he wants? fine. he will destroy whatever is left of his legacy. besides do you really want to go around as someone that received a presidential pardon? Let him pardon whomever he wishes. It does not mean there cannot be an investigation into the pardon recipients, the pardon process, and everything obama did. indeed, issuing pardons to people that have not been convicted of a crime is so unusual that it will invite and excuse unusual investigations.

obama is not brave or strong he is a weak willed ninny that has had everything handed to him as an affirmative action grant. if he ever encountered competition he had others solve the problem for him or used his chicago style methods to get things done. when he is faced with being held accountable for his own actions he will fold.

President Obama paid a total federal tax rate in 2011 on adjusted
income of $789,674 that may be lower than that of his secretary, even
though she earned substantially less....
According to Wikipedia, Johnson is 31 years
old and now attends Harvard Law School. I don’t know about her personal
life or what her deductions would be, so I can’t assume any children or
extra deductions.
On a $90,000 salary, she would pay $16,578 in federal taxes, $3,780 to Social Security, and $1,305 in Medicare taxes.
That adds up to a total federal tax burden of $21,663 on $90,000 in adjusted gross income, or a tax rate of 24 percent.
Obama’s
federal income tax rate was 20.5 percent. If you include the Medicare
and Social Security taxes paid by Obama, his total federal tax liability
is 21.8 percent, fully two percent less than that of his secretary even
though his adjusted gross income was nearly nine times hers.

There is another key factor difference between 2008 and 2012: the Tidal Wave Tea Party Elections of 2010.

Our Deficit/Debt Crisis has only gotten worse since the Tea Party Tsunami swept the Democrats out of the House and ground down their majority in the Senate to a maimed nub.
Why has it gotten worse?
The Senate has not passed a budget in over three years. And Obama’s Big Spending Budget Proposals have been voted down unanimously in both chambers.

The Democrats have done their level best to thwart even having an honest conversation on the subject. Voting Americans were not fooled in 2010 and they will not be fooled in 2012.

The issue of Outrageous Spending sustained by Monstrous Deficits piling into Catastrophic Debt remains radioactive to Obama and the Democrats.

And the Presidential Election will only massively raise the stakes on this critical issue which is wholly toxic to the Obama and the Democrats.

So realize that the Tea Party has not yet even cleared its throat as to begin speaking on the upcoming elections.

And it won’t be speaking in favor of Obama and the Democrats.

Rather, the Tea Party will once again SHOUT AT THE TOP OF ITS LUNGS AGAINST OBAMA AND THE DEMOCRATS.

And it will shout them right out of office.

Contrary to idiotic belief, the Paul Ryan Budget Proposal is not going to be politically problematic for the GOP. – It’s going to be a razor sharp weapon wielded against Obama and the Democrats.

That’s why Mitt Romney has enthusiastically embraced it. And that’s why the Tea Party will enthusiastically support Romney as their Champion.

Mitt Romney is the real deal. Over the last four years, he has put together a superb campaign organization. He has a decade’s long track-record of accomplishing big, difficult goals. He’s now a seasoned campaigner – honed by nearly a dozen debates which included competing with intellectual heavyweight Newt Gingrich.
And in case anyone missed the primaries: Romney is fucking ferocious about going after his political opponents on substance. – And yet he never makes it personal.

There are good reasons to be optimistic that ol’ Mittens is going to surf that Tea Party Tsunami right into the White House.

233 Bammer and his minions have done nothing in 3+ years... and have alienated just about every group, except the African-American vote. They are looking for a horse to ride into November, and they can't find one, everything they have touched has turned into a flaming sack of dung... Obammercare, Stimulus, Iraq, Afghanistan, Gitmo, Solyndra/Green Energy- you name it, they have crapped all over it.

To go after Mitten's wife was a huge mistake - especially after he cried about the press going after Michelle and wanting to keep the girls out of the limelight.

Will the dead vote in traditional Donk areas - yes they will, and with the help of all of his community organizing "friends". But there is a difference now - Bammer has a record (or lack thereof) that the GOP and Mitt should be running out at every opportunity he has, and they should be rubbing his nose in it...put his ass on the defensive from now until November. That is how Mitt will win ...

235 O/T but I wonder if Congressman West reads AoS, because he's doing here what some of us suggested he do. From his FB page:

"Some people are complaining about my choice of words at a recent town hall. How about a real discussion of the ideas and legislation sponsored by members of the Progressive Caucus?

Here is a sampling of their extreme left-wing policies:

--H.J. Res 34 (2011) – Redistribution of Wealth Amendment to the Constitution

--H.R. 3784 (2012) – Legislation to impose windfall profit taxes and price controls on specific industries, including the creation of a Reasonable Profits Boards

--H.R. 1124 (2011). Legislation to impose exorbitant federal tax rates on those that government deems to earn too much

246 The Corporate Average Fuel Economy (CAFE) regulations that President Obama announced last summer will make it impossible for 7 million lower income consumers to buy a new car according to a National Automobile Dealers Association (NADA) study released today.

Obama’s proposed CAFE standards, which will begin taking effect in 2017, raise minimum average vehicle fleet fuel efficiency to 54.5 mpg by 2025. The Environmental Protection Agency and National Highway Traffic Safety Administration estimate that this regulation will raise the average price of passenger cars and light trucks by $3,000.

“The unintended consequences of the proposed fuel economy increases are clear,” NADA Used Car Guide analyst David Wagner said. “If the price of a vehicle goes up by the government estimate of almost $3,000, millions of people will no longer be able to finance a new vehicle.”

Pass this along to Mr Allen West:

April 2009

"It was quite a moment to behold," Barbara Lee said, recalling her moments with Castro.

“It was almost like listening to an old friend,” said Rep. Bobby Rush (D-Il.), adding that he found Castro’s home to be modest and Castro’s wife to be particularly hospitable.

“In my household I told Castro he is known as the ultimate survivor,” Rush said.

Rep. Laura Richardson (D-Ca.) said Castro was receptive to President Obama’s message of turning the page in American foreign policy.

"He listened. He said the exact same thing" about turning the page "as President Obama said," said Richardson.

Richardson said Castro knew her name and district. "He looked right into my eyes and he said, 'How can we help? How can we help President Obama?'"

Jane - I have no doubt, no doubt whatsoever, that Obama and his band of demons despise the military. It will be such a relief to have a CiC that actually honors and respects them. Bush did. 1) he's done a lousy job as president. He's incompetent and hapless, he's just been terrible AT THE JOB, and people are tired of him.

2) people really, really are angry about "Obamacare" and want the ones in charge to pay for that. I think this is extremely underestimated by pundits everywhere. Really, really, really mad.

3) The economy stinks. This is enough on its own to sink any president.

All three combined? Again, I've been wrong before and things can change but I just do not see President Obama winning in November.

He didn't stand up and talk about WMDs (I'm sure he had his reasons), but if you read first hand accounts, there were all the components they needed there to make it.Plus, when Iraq turned ugly, he trusted the commanders and not the men fighting the fight. I sure do remember that. Some interested party should do an anti-Obama ad that shows footage of the Great Retarded Fly-by and then cuts to screaming people running out of Manhattan office buildings.

I recall that the scapegoat for that idiocy was a minor White House officialwho was, I do beleive, the first of Obama's people thrown under the bus after the inauguration. No way it was all his fault. No way.

420 A couple of weeks ago it was reveled that despite Obama's blatant anti-Israel and anti-Jewish comments, actions, and associates that a very solid majority of American Jews still plan to vote to re-elect Obama. That got me to asking why it is that leftists have such blind loyalty to their failed leaders. Jimmy Carter is still hailed by some as a brilliant, progressive leader. (They made a movie about how great he was a couple of years ago.) I think that I have an answer.

The left is absolutely wedded to their leftist ideology regardless of whether it fails in the sense that it makes things worse. They have this absolute loyalty because they believe that anything other than their leftist policies is inherently evil regardless of whether they actually make things better. Therefore, they look at Obama and they know that anyone who engaged in his far leftist politics would fare no better. Therefore Obama can't be blamed for his failures. It is merely the failure of the only option available since any other policies would be inherently evil.

470 The most important one may be No More "Yes We Can." Obama ran in 2008, in his own words, as a "blank screen" upon which voters could "project" their hopes.

I had to say that I hadn't since I don't give a fuck about cats and wouldn't know one from another regardless . She said that one that lives down the street and is often out "unsupervised" came into her yard and "beat up" her cat and it cost her $700 in vet bills. I won't even tell you what I wanted to say then, since I know many of you like cats. But, getting me to give a fuck is not happenin'. It's really kind of sad though. Her car has a "meow" sticker.

I don't know. I once went to a (State run) college play put on by the drama department. It was called, "Things That Go Bump In The Night". It was all about defining homophobes, and folks that were terrified of nuclear power. It was in 1976. After the review of the play, the college started collecting all sorts of "liberal arts" majors.
