Overnight Open Thread
A Colorado-based consulting, engineering and construction firm, named CH2M Hill, was awarded nearly $2 billion from the stimulus to perform cleanup work at the Hanford nuclear site.
The company used those funds to hire roughly 1,300 employees.
They then inflated the hiring numbers by using a Department of Energy metric known as "lives touched", which allowed them to boast that the stimulus helped somehow helped or 'touched' three-and-a-half times as many people as they had actually employed.
When the stimulus funds ran out, so did the ability to support the jobs created or lives touched. Roughly 1,500 employees were laid off.
And lets not forget about the State Fiscal Stabilization Fund - Education Fund part of stimulus (around $100B total). Just go to Stimulus Watch and click on the tab most expensive. You'll see Education Fund grants as among the most expensive and all they really did was prop up existing school budgets. Now that most of those funds are gone and the additional $10B authorized by Congress (Education Jobs Fund to pay K-12 salaries) in August, 2010 will expire on 30 September, 2012, states will have to beg for more, raise revenue or make some cuts.

Honestly, I can't tell if he was joking or not.
ONT thread went up that had a funny title (which I guess was possibly interpretable as 'racist' because it happened to juxtapose with a photo of MLK) and also had a picture of a park in Asia that has large - VERY large - phalluses. The pic was above the fold and NSFW (imo).
But I don't know that either of those things had anything to do with Truman saying 'goodbye.'

Truman as not banned according to the official word last night. The rumor got started that he was banned but it was just a rumor. It was nice to see how much support he got, and very funny when rdbrewer made the announcement that it was just a rumor. He said the ONT reminded him of his grandmothers sewing circle.

Derb has probably been ignored by the NRO guys for some time. He was all-in with the Ron Paul love years and years ago (~2007) and that's when I'd had it with his little podcast.
Frankly, NRO should have let him go when he went to write for Taki. That's where the Buchanan/Sobran crowd is and they should have known then, or at least kept their eye on what he wrote.
BTW, for those who don't know (he wrote it in his piece but if you choose not to read it) his wife is Chinese.

I realize that all the East Coast centric "experts" are picking the Yankees....but they are idiots. No one in the American League has better starting pitching (1 through 5) than the Rays. And if Mo Riveria all of sudden starts throwing like a 40 year old reliever, yikes. The Yankees will make the playoffs, only because A) the League added a 2nd wild card B) they get 18 games against Baltimore and C) they will score a ton of runs. But then they will lose the 1 game playoff against either the Angles/Rangers and ESPN will go into full crisis mode.

It could be. Rambo 4 came out a little over a year after Rocky Balboa; I read an interview after the release of Rambo 4 where Sly specifically said he took HGH to help him prepare for Rambo 4, but it could be he started during the filming of Rocky Balboa.

When you "truncate" a quote you remove some of the words from the end to give a less-than-complete account of what was said. Truncation is a legitimate part of the editing process, but it must be used carefully so as to avoid taking away too much information.
There is another word entirely for selectively removing words from the middle of a quote to portray a diametrically opposite picture of what was actually said... that is called "lying", and it is used to prevent giving away too much information.

Well, I think mankind is basically tribal in nature at a limbic brain level; however, there is an alternative to the easy tribalism of "race/ethnicity/etc." and that is the meritorious community. The founders (yes they were all dead white men over 100 years old) framed the ground rules for such an alternative in the US Constitution with equality before the law and unalienable rights as key precepts. Such a society is not easy to run nor is its success guaranteed, but for those that are willing, it offers far more to the individual than group identity based societies.

You can next year, once Houston moves to the AL and you have 5 teams in each division in each league. Right now you have 14 AL Teams and 16 NL Teams. Added bonus - you get interleague play every day.

Not the worse division. Ladies and gentlemen, I present the AL Central where, outside of Detriot, all other teams are, at best, average. White Sox (old and expensive), Minnesota (uh, yea....outside of Mauer and Morneau, name a Twin), Cleveland (eh) and Kansas City (nice young position players....but Bruce Chen is your opening day strater ---- Bruce Chen?).
And I think the Pirates will be competative this year. Remember last year they were in first until a crappy call in Atlanta sunk their season...which is what happens to young teams.

When I was a kid they used the B-58 to do practice supersonic runs over Americanmetropolitan areas- yes, indeed they did. The only way you could possibly prosper in Jurrassic setting is if you moved your colony off well traveled predator routes, by non herd eating water source such as a well or underground spring. Your could stage your hunting from there. The cavemen did it but with not as many predators so I am sure it is "possible".
I would still choose the zombies cause you could pretty much make them chase you up a hill and then rope swing across and watch them plummet to their second death or at least break every bone they had.

Dinosaur Island implies the rest of the world is still intact, so you can get regular shipments of Barrett .50-caliber rifles and AK-47s. Plus it's an island so eventually there won't be any dinosaurs.
In the zombie situation one assumes everyone else is zombified or eaten, so you're entirely on your own. In which case you're going to drop rapidly back to a medieval lifestyle, if not something more primitive. That means even without zombies survival will be difficult.
Not that zombie apocalypse makes a lick of sense. If they're halfway realistic (i.e. have to obey basic laws of the universe) then the zombie problem will solve itself in a month or two. They'll rot, or eat each other, or starve. If they're somehow magically durable and don't need food, then you've got proof that supernatural forces exist, so Harry Potter will save you.

In the Jurrasic setting every human would be keyed against the enemy, in the zombie setting the enemy could possibly be them, so thus it would cause unforseen problems such as someone hiding a bite or possibly flipping out and letting zombies in. We play a little rough, and according to home-field rules -- so I'm trying to be sure that you're not hurt because you don't get the rules yet.....as opposed to someone who plays hard and gets some bruises. I'm not trying to cast you into a "fragile flower".....indeed, you may not be aware that there are two types of birds that rule the suburban landscape -- when they want a bath, it's their bath; when they want a feeder, it's their feeder. Hawks, jays, crows all give way, but most people can't guess which two birds they'd be.
It's woodpeckers and hummingbirds. Woodpeckers, because even the largest hawks and eagles can't guarantee against one shot -- and a single blow from a woodpecker can shatter wings or legs. And hummingbirds because they alone -- of all birds -- can hover, fly backwards, and fly upside down (!) .....and their OODA loop is in milliseconds -- anything swooping in on a hummingbird can have the hummingbird attacking their defenseless back repeatedly until the hummingbird gets bored. There are no effective defenses.
So it's not that I'm picturing a defenseless hummingbird......it's just that I'm trying to get you caught up on several years of moron history.

I met her at an event I was working at in 2008. And I've spent plenty of my life visiting Santa Barbara, having grown up just a few dozen miles south on the 101. (Take that, Iowahawk!) I spent much of my teens working at events featuring Playboy Centerfolds and still have many of those signed issues.

Except the vast number of characters who do exactly that. Spock was doing Jedi mind tricks when George Lucas was still a kid from Modesto going to film school at USC. Remember the bit where Spock plants a suggestion in a guard's mind through a wall? Guard thinks prisoners have escaped and enters the cell to investigate and is then overpowered. This was, of course, an old gag in SF before it was done on Trek. Both the Jedis and the Green Lantern Corps owe much to the Lensmen of the 1930s.
This can go on infinitely. The winner is ultimately the writer. He gets to play god and pick the outcome. For every Star Wars advantage a Star Trek counter can be offered and vice versa. Neither has enough hard definition to make it anything more than an exercise in playing favorites.

Star Wars is largely a compilation of all the stuff Lucas grew up reading. Dune, published when he was 21, was a huge influence on him. The original proposal for his epic was blatantly drawn from Dune and intended to be a multi-generational saga far lengthier than what has been published thus far.

That depends which character in 'American Graffiti' is more Lucas. The Ron Howard everyman or the nerdy Charles Martin Smith 'Terry the Toad' who is sent off to die in Viet Nam.
Lucas supposedly fancied himself a budding pro race driver in his teens but rethought his life after a terrible car accident. Somehow I think he was fooling himself about that or edited his history more to his liking. (Modesto has a surprisingly high murder rate. There may not be too many of his childhood contemporaries left to contradict him.) The young Lucas always struck me as extremely nerdy and never possessed of the athleticism pro race driving demands. A friend who worked for Lucas on Star Wars (Lucas hired him because he was very well connected in fandom and Fox was completely oblivious to what they had) largely confirmed this perception.

They're all either extinct, domesticated, or kept in preserves for their own protection. And that was mostly before we had guns.
We have a good track record for prospering amid big dangerous animals, many of which want to eat us.
Zombie apocalypse is one we've never done for real before. Seems more risky if only for that reason.

Done properly, the big fear factor of the zombie apocalypse scenario is the general feeling that the basic rules have failed and nothing can be trusted anymore. People fail to respond properly because they've been cognitively cast adrift.
The ones who survive were not regarded as normal before the change. They may have stayed out of trouble by and large but they were always a bit different and everyone knew it.
But that is how evolution works. When a catastrophic (as opposed to more usual subtle forces) event massively selects for particular traits, the species is going to be a bit different as a result.

Tonight was the first night of Passover, and we host a lot of people. This year, we had a total of 35 people at dinner (including the five of us). We have help to set everything up and cleanup afterwards. An older black couple (and her son), who have helped around the house and with the twins for years.
Well, a little after 11pm tonight, after most everyone had gone home, and we were cleaning up (I say we loosely, as I'm still only able to stand for about a minute without pain, and can lift nothing), Mark, the gentleman half of the couple, suddenly dropped to the floor. His breathing and heart stopped completely.
My wife and a friend of ours started CPR immediately, and I got on the phone with 911. The local FD EMTs showed up in less than 10 minutes, and the paramedics arrived about 10 minutes after that.
Mark was in full arrest the whole time. The EMTs had him on the paddles pretty much as soon as they arrived, and continued the CPR all the way through until he was put on the ambulance.
Just before they left, one of the paramedics told us Mark was breathing on his own again, and had a steady, if incredibly weak, pulse. He's currently in the CCU, and holding his own. But the doctors have no idea how much brain function he's got left. They're running a CAT scan tonight, and we'll know a lot more tomorrow.
The paramedic told us that basically my wife and our friend saved Mark's life. They're pretty sure they would not have been able to get his heart started again had CPR not been initiated immediately. He's not out of the woods, obviously, but at least there's hope.
I'm telling you this for a few reasons:
1) I just needed to get it all out. I haven't been able to sleep, and I wanted to share this with people who I know care.
2) Learn CPR. You never know. You just never fucking know. Had I had any physical strength and endurance at all, I'd have been right in there too. In fact, if the ladies had run out of steam before the EMTs had arrived, I'd have sucked it up and jumped in as well; back be damned. The point being that it's a skill that you hate to have to use, but will never regret having at your disposal.
3) Please pray for Mark. He's had a hard life, and it's certainly not going to get any easier. But the power of prayer is a wondrous thing. I know it will matter. Please.
I'll keep you posted over the next couple of days as things unfold. I'm going to shut down and try to get a few hours of sleep. This weekend is going in a direction completely orthogonal to what was expected. I'm supposed to go to services in the morning to observe the anniversary of my father's death. An odd juxtaposition, that....

Welcome to the fambly. We're insane, yes. But there sure is a whole lot of lovin' mixed in with Teh Crazies. I've only just become initiated myself. I'm hoping to get back in the swing of things as my back gets better. I tend to work late nights (I'm an iPhone programmer; weird hours come with the territory), so this is a great forum in which to exercise the bullshit that rattles around in my head.
And don't worry about the trolls. It's kinda like a game of whack-a-mole. Every time you knock one down, another one pops up. But if you can take some pleasure from the exercise of ripping them new assholes, then you'll come out ahead.
And just keep reminding yourself--ignorance can be cured; stupidity can't. ;-)

The facts are all defensible and readily backed up. The opinions are ones held by far too many who won't admit to it.
There was a period in the 80s when neither myself or anyone I knew would go to Magic Mountain. It had become very popular with black kids from the crappier parts of LA. That in of itself wasn't the problem. The frequent of violence and muggings at the park was the problem. Nobody would state the plain fact they were avoiding a gathering place for trouble-prone people of a certain portion of the human spectrum. Except for one small group. The black kids in Thousand Oaks could say it when nobody else would. They wanted nothing to do with blacks from that part of LA. They had better things to do with their lives than get beaten up for unknowingly wearing a piece of clothing a gang had chosen as their personal plumage.
I have to wonder if Derb has gotten a dire diagnosis and decided he is going out guns blazing.

I notice that LGF and Twitchy both have posted parts of Derb's notorious article, while eliding the links that support his contentions. In fairness, if you wish to condemn his article, at least read his actual post and check his links. I'll be interested to see if there are any factual rebuttals to his points, which he has conveniently numbered for easy reference. So far the reactions seem to be highly emotional, and haven't included any factual challenges to his specific claims.
I've corresponded with Derb a few times over the years. He's the smartest guy who ever took the time to write me, and I just don't see any hatred in him (except hatred for tyrants, criminals and jihadis.) It's sad that NR is soon going to have to ostentatiously fire him for writing things that are mostly provably true.

As for the justifying what he's doing based on quantitative studies of blacks -- bull shit. It's a multi-variable situation. People's actions are not dictated by their race, but on a whole host of factors. But he focuses on one variable (the one he can see, race). That's the problem with it and why it's not even valid scientifically, irrespective of the moral concerns.
You can raise your kids to be situationally aware and to use common sense without teaching them to judge people based on skin color.

Some of his points are simply factual, like points 2, 4, 5, 7, 8, 11, 14. Some points are "common sense situational awareness," [thanks, Y-Not] like 10b and 10i. Some points, like 10d, do not stand without further qualification; e.g, you'd expect to be safe at a Howard University 50th Annual Student Reunion. His point 9 is marred by his (uncharacteristically) pulling numbers (5%, 50%) out of his ass; the point is true, but the exact numbers are arguable.
I don't agree with all his judgements and conclusions, but I still think it's sad that he is going to lose his NR job, and will be henceforth shunned by most conservatives. He took up Eric Holder's challenge not to be cowardly in discussing race, and the respectable right wing is going to flee.

Its not so much a war on religion as a war on actually living out or displaying that religion. They're fine with you believing whatever you want, if you keep it to yourself and don't let it influence what you do or what you would like society to be like.
They have one worldview and Christianity another. You can be Christian as long as you don't let that get in the way of their worldview. Its a war of basic presuppositions, of how you understand life. They have their ideals, Christians have a nearly opposite set.

Borg cube hands-down. Anyone arguing that the Death Star would win clearly has not watched a lot of Star Trek. Having watched a lot of both series, it's not hard to figure out. The Borg have extremely advanced technology, mobility and adaptability. The Death Star can only fire at large, lumbering targets and it's firing angle is quite limited. The Borg are advanced enough with shields and other defensive technologies that perhaps they could repel firepower of that magnitude if the DS managed to somehow hit them. You have to assume that the Borg would fly right into that relatively small firing zone and that the Death Star would be smart enough to fire before the Borg could start anything but that is unlikely. The Borg wouldn't take long to figure out that they just have to use their cutter beam to plow through the DS armor (it has no shields and even if it did, the Borg can take those down pretty quickly) to breach their core. They have other powerful energy based weapons that they could direct at the DS dish laser, damaging or disabling it entirely. All lasers would be useless from other surface guns or TIE fighters as even Federation ships can repel lasers without any shields. Sure Vader could probably handle Borg hordes that would try to assimilate him if they wanted to but if they just blow the thing up with him on it, the Force isn't going to mean much there.
