CNN Analyzes Zimmerman Audio, Can't Hear Word

Racial politics sucks. As David Horowitz says:

"Is anybody else out there as sick and tired as I am of lynch mob racists like Jesse Jackson and Al Sharpton (vide: Tawana Brawley, the Duke Lacrosse kids) who don the mantel of the “civil rights” movement to indict non-blacks in advance of the facts, and incite racial rage against them?"

I'm just sick of this kind of story in general. We're dealing with The Narrative here, and it's frustrating and unproductive. There are people who stand to benefit from racial division, and they're all there on this one. Even Obama thinks there is an up-side for him, whether it's diverting the nation's attention from his record, from some other news item, or whether he thinks division and discord somehow help his reelection prospects. Think about it; he's been pushing division at every opportunity, mostly on class lines. What a nasty brand of politics. And it's important to note that the White House has since clarified Obama's comments on this case. Apparently, things aren't working out exactly the way they wanted.

Anyway, CNN did a wonderful job of cleaning up the audio on the Zimmerman 911 call. It is relevant whether Zimmerman uttered a racial slur for a couple of reasons: A slur might open him up to federal jurisdiction on a civil rights rap, and it possibly sheds some light on his Zimmerman's state of mind--on whether he was defending himself or attacking. But. The only problem is, CNN can't seem to hear what is being said, "f***ing punks." Not "f***ing coons." They don't even consider it. Undoubtedly, a lot of people with an axe to grind will perform the same little mental trick.

It's a case of "I choose to hear this and not that." And before you accuse me of doing the same, note that I know a little about audio myself. He puffs the plosive "p" sound distinctly, and the "attack" on that phoneme/sound (the very first part of the sound wave) is very sharp and loud, since it involves pressuring up on the lips and making a popping sound. The "attack" on a "c" sound is softer and not as loud, since it originates further back in the mouth. In addition, the word "punks" has a volume dip in the middle with a distinctly louder "ks" sound at the end--like the sound of a cymbal. "Coons" has a sustained sound; it doesn't drop off. Below this video, I'm adding another video made by an audio guy. It's a little sloppy, but his reasoning is sound, though incomplete, and you can see what I'm talking about in graphic form.

We have some great audio guys who hang out at the blog. Maybe one or more of them will weigh-in and verify what I'm saying and what the guy says in the second video.

Please note that both of these videos involve explicit language.

The CNN report via Mediaite.

27CDB6E-AE6D-11cf-96B8-444553540000" id="ep">

It's interesting to note that CNN doesn't even throw out the word "punks." Come on, guys. You can try to be a little more objective. You could have put some of this political nastiness to rest.

Here is the video from the audio guy on YouTube.

Note that the frozen frame above is a graphic representation of the words "f***ing punks." There are two because his equipment represents the sound in stereo. He is laying the word "coons" over the graphic to show the difference. His reasoning is pretty good, although he misses the point about the "attack" on the "p" sound. Surely someone will do a nicer and more thorough version of this in the future. Again, I welcome input from experts.

I watched both these a couple of times last night, listening on my Bose noise-canceling headphones, and never heard it cleanly enough to definitively state what word he said other than that it's one that ends in "s".

But "punks" vs. "coons" has to be about a 90%/10% split in favor of the former based on the lack of a "c" sound at the beginning and the dropoff thing noted by RD and the YouTube audio guy.

35 If a man's life were not in jeopardy, I'd have to laugh.

As I understand it, the "rodent slur" is pretty ancient. Honestly, I don't know, I didn't grow up learning them, but I did learn them from the media.

The media's trying so hard with this case, but they jumped the gun on the hysteria before they realized that George Zimmerman was a Hispanic Democrat. (Yes, he's a registered Democrat.)

Also, it turns out that our 17-year-old has tattoos and was only in his father's neighborhood because he was suspended from school. Evidence points to this being over his getting violent with a bus driver. This would tend to comport with Zimmerman's account of being attacked from behind as he was exiting the scene. It's something a tough guy would have done.

I think the media wants out from under this thing now.

Exactly. So few blacks, in fact, that other than the infamous 'n' word I never knew any slurs unless I heard them on a Very Special After School Special/Sitcom Dealing with the Scourge of Racism. A few years ago in PA there was a case were some teens were accused of beating to death a hispanic guy. Supposedly it was a hate crime because they yelled racial slurs at him during the fight. The teens were acquited on the criminal charges and then were slammed with a federal civil rights suit despite that acquital. It was incredibly apparent that the DOJ was determined to find a hate crime no matter what.

The media may not be "lying" in the way President Clinton wasn't "lying" when he said he never had sex with that woman, but the slant of the coverage is almost worse than a bald faced lie, since it gives them a bit of cover and implies they are being objective.

Some here (whom I respect, BTW, but disagree on this issue) seem to feel we shouldn't give credence/legs to this crap by discussing it. However, I think a pushback is needed. In addition to being flat out untruthful and unfair, I believe the coverage of this also provides a national platform forthe meme of voting again for Obama to assuage white guilt. After all, the MSM toldus last time that if Obama was not elected, the only valid reason would be underlying racism. And obviously, incidents like these show that we are still a virulently racist country - right? If there is no pushback from places like this, The Narrative stands as the official record, and the MSM preens about having enlighted us ignorant savages. And the Democrats can show us unenlightened ones the way come election time.

So as heinous as it is, I feel we have to deal with this story.

If the DOJ gets involved, odds are that Zimmerman is going down for something. Even if they have to go to the "lying to an investigator" fallback.

93 81 Holder and the DOJ are going to go for civil rights violations no matter what.

110 This timeline of events makes me curious. Bear with me.

February 28. Trayvon Martin is killed.

March 1st. Andrew Breitbart passes away. A few days later, his organization releases tapes that showcase Derrick Bell and his Critical Race Theory, and ties Bell to Obama.

March 15th. Bill Ayers makes this statement: "
" I think the people who
practice white supremacy and who benefit from it are going to have to be
stopped. And I think that's a huge undertaking and I think it takes a
revolution."

March 20th. Malia Obama goes to Mexico on Spring Break. Why do I mention this? Because this is the day that we all got to witness the very blatant fact that Obama can tell the Press which stories NOT to run.

March 20th, again. The first mention of the Trayvon Martin case that I have been able to find in the National press. Why then? Three full weeks had passed between the shooting and the Media push. Was this story intentionally pushed by the White House? We know they have the power and a willing press - they just demonstrated it themselves that very day.

Then Barack Obama inserts himself into the story, not to reign it in, but to provide an empathetic cover.

Recall the quote from Professor Bell, beloved mentor of Barack Obama: “ The new crop of leaders are going to be a lot more dangerous and
radical, and the next phase will probably be led by charismatic
individuals, who urge that instead of killing each
other, they should go out in gangs and kill a whole lot of white
people.”

139 It could hurt Zimmerman's chances of an aquittal.

What? IANAL, but I'm pretty sure he's assumed innocent until proven guilty. Therefore a lack of evidence- by definition- should play in his favor.

That said, they did all the processing they would normally have done in that situation, I'm sure. Remember Ace's thread on Friday- they had a frequent 9-1-1 caller whose calls had lead to arrests/stopped crimes. He was a CCW holder (this is important- even in Shall Issue states, they do background checks, which means he had to be relatively clean, criminally speaking). He had called 9-1-1 on this issue, it seems like twice (maybe just once and they split it into two recordings, though). Multiple eye-witnesses were interviewed at the time of incident. Multiple 9-1-1 calls caught the cries for help and the gunshot. Zimmerman's statement matched up with physical evidence on the scene.

They weren't going to do a week long investigation here. There was no reason to do so. As it turns out- there still probably isn't reason to do so. In fact, before all these facts came to light, I would have thought Z would have gotten acquitted of criminal charges, but would have faced a nasty wrongful death suit. As more comes out, I'm thinking a jury will be less and less inclined to hear such a suit favorably.

This. It's reached the point of no return. Regardless of the facts that (may or may not) emerge, there will be punishment and the punishment will have to satisfy the usual suspects. 144 You all missed out. This morning I watched Ann Curry have a full meltdown on-air. Apparently somebody forgot about the narrative and Zimmerman's best friend, who happens to be African-American, was on-air defending him.

When Curry said something about a dead innocent boy, Zimmerman's friend insisted that it was a life or death situation and that somebody was going to get hurt badly. Curry was fuming and tried to reassert her point. Zimmerman's friend again asserted that Martin was beating him to the point that Zimmerman feared for his life. It was easily the best bit of television I have seen in years.

Well, pursuit is going to be a complicated and critical question. If Zimmerman ever pursued Martin at anything faster than a walk, or continued to attempt to follow Martin, even at a walk, after Martin ran away, that is pursuit. If it is found Zimmerman did pursue Martin, that would substantially make Zimmerman's defense difficult.

That really would be a travesty. There's no way on earth that this should be a federal case.

Zimmerman's not a cop. He's not a sheriff's deputy. He wasn't acting under color of law. This was a street encounter between two private citizens that ended up with one of them dead. Either it was a homicide or it was self-defense. A state law issue and a state court prosecution. Club Fed need not be involved.

An autopsy should have been SOP, I would think.

Here's the thing: if there is any bad actor here (based on the current facts in evidence), it is the cops- and then not to a level I would actually term "bad behavior," just laziness and cynicism.

Autopsy should have been done- if it wasn't, someone needs to be severely reprimanded. The cops should have done at least some minimal level evidence collection- if they didn't, someone needs to be severely reprimanded/disciplined/fired. And so forth.

But for all we know, they actually did those things and still didn't find enough to charge Zimmerman with anything.

He did go on to say though, that where these coups go wrong is the law of unintended consequences. It gets hard when instead of the regime you had planned taking over, a 3rd party entity no one was paying attention to comes in and hijacks the original coup.

197 Emergingin 1969 as the most militant wing
of the SDS’s Revolutionary Youth Movement, the fledgling Weatherman
issued a "manifesto" eschewing nonviolence and calling instead for armed
opposition to U.S. policies; advocating the overthrow of capitalism;
exhorting white radicals to trigger a worldwide revolution by fighting
in the streets of the "mother country"; and proclaiming that the time
had come to launch a race war against the "white" United States on
behalf of the non-white Third World.

Grounded in identity politics, Weatherman ideology and rhetoric rebelled
against what later came to be known as America’s “white skin
privilege.”

FBI files from 1976, recently made public under the Freedom of Information Act, confirm the connections between Weatherman, Castro, and Moscow.Weatherman leaders traveled illegally
to Havana in 1968 to engage in terrorist training. There, camps set up
by Soviet KGB Colonel Vadim Kotchergine were educating Westerners both
in Marxist philosophy and urban warfare.

CNN by way of example has a lesser audience than the Cartoon Network. If conservatives finally clued in and stopped watching CNN they'd be off the air entirely. The same holds true for MSNBC and various big-city liberal newsrags.

There are much better ways in which to spend one's time than obsessing over what a cadre of airheaded liberals are doing on cable TV networks to which nobody on Main Street pays any attention. Merely by way of example, how about contributing to Connie Mack's campaign against Bill Nelson in Fla.? That's a crucial contest. How about working to remove Carnahan from her Senate seat in MO? Big picture vs. little picture. Relevance vs. irrelevance. Cogent vs. senseless.

With hundreds of millions of direct American witnesses.

Leftard and Vichy Right lawyers, holding hands: Let us handle this for the troglodytes on the right. If you knew anything, you'd know that the Constitution says, "No Person shall be convicted of Treason unless on the Testimony of two
Witnesses to the same overt Act, or on Confession in open Court." As we have already had 26,987,321 witnesses testify to the treason, that is not "two", as per the Constitution, per se, so treason cannot be charged.

237 CNN by way of example has a lesser audience than the Cartoon Network. If conservatives finally clued in and stopped watching CNN they'd be off the air entirely. The same holds true for MSNBC and various big-city liberal newsrags.
Doubtful. Many of them may operate on a loss, passing the costs to other businesses shared by their ownership. Some of them may not be making their bones on a straightfoward ratings model to begin with, you take the PR/marketing guy for XYZ Corp. out to a very expensive lunch and remind him that customers like businesses that support women or something.

BUT - you're right. Many on the right do not seem to realize that any given MSNBC show has maybe 80,000 people watching, is rivalled by the exposure of some blogs and dwarfed bysome talk radio outfits. There really isn't a 'mainstream' media anymore, and the Republicans don't HAVE to play their silly games if they don't want to.

This is what drives me nuts. The police saw the injuries to the back of Zimmerman's head and his face and took 6 witness statements that night. They also saw the injuries (or lack therof) on Martin and decided not to arrest Zimmerman.
The prosecutors thus far have declined to prosecute and have sent it to a grand jury but everyone in the Fucking media already has Zimmerman guilty. STFU and let the process work.

Posted by: NC Ref at March 26, 2012 12:18 PM (/izg2)

250 First: All they did was equalize the audio (for being "the most sophisticated" audio suite in the business I would expect some noise reduction software to have been used).

Second: The guy was using a very average equalizer that comes stock with the audio program being used. There are far better equalizers built by third party companies that could have given them and us better results(shit, I mean I own better equipment then CNN!)

Third: By cutting the low frequencies through an equalizer you actually will lose audio integrity that might be important to deciphering what was said. Not all the noise I heard was lo-end there was plenty of mid-range and high-end noise in that audio clip. That's why you use noise reduction software not Equalizers when you restore or try and clean up bad audio.

Fourth: A "C" is a mid-range type of sound. So boosting the mid-range frequencies only, and cutting the low-end frequencies. You are doing your best to hear only the mid's and not the whole audio.

Fifth: They basically did the least that one could do to try and clean that audio up. That would never pass spec if you were doing audio restoration for a client. They would laugh at you and refuse to pay.

I think this was a con job to give the appearance of having cleaned up the audio to try and give their narrative credibility.

For the record it sounds like a plosive "P" not a "C". I can't make out if he said "Punks" or not but to my professional ear it doesn't sound like a "C".

317 This whole thing has driven me nuts. I had one of the worst arguments ever with Mr. Rockmom over this last night. He has bought all the media spin hook, line, and sinker, and practically accused me of being a racist when I questioned whether Zimmerman could have had cause to shoot the kid.

What really has me hacked off is that last Jaunary there was one of the most heinous murders of a group of teens in Philadelphia by an adult that I have ever heard of. A 32-year-old guy with a mile-long rap sheet ran out of his house with a gun and shot up a car full of teens who had shown up for a rumble with the guy's stepson, which started with some Facebook trash-talking. The kids in the car were unarmed, and 3 of them died. They were driving away from the house when the thug came out and started shooting. All of the kids except the driver were under 16, and they all died. But of course, all of these people were Latino, so nobody gives a shit.

LOL. You're a little mixed up. If you're on the Right, libtards assume you're a racist and loudly proclaim you to be one no matter what you do. In the court of public opinion you're guilty until proven innocent. There's no reason for conservatives to try to prove anything - it's futile with people like you.
That said, the Right's reaction to this hasnothing whatsoever to do with proving some kind of racial-tolerance bona fides. It's about simple justice, which should be untainted by racial considerations. Libtards see all things through their racist prism, and are happy to subvert justice in favor of preserving the narrative as they see it.

To be honest I've never heard of an explosive phenome when referring to dialogue. As for plosive...what happens is that certain sounds, the most common are "P's" and "B's", project wind straight on to the microphone due to the fact you press your lips together and release them before the beginning of pronouncing the sound or word. This projects wind directly into the microphone capsule, ribbon or dynamic head depending on your microphone. This wind overloads the mic capsule, ribbon or dynamic head and distorts or creates a very bassy kind of distortion. That's why when Zimmerman is breathing heavily you hear the distortion on the audio clip he's distorting the mic on his phone.
That's why you always see those little pantyhose like screens in front of the Mic in studios, this helps break up the plosive wind. We'll also use different micing techniques such as tilting the microphone down then raising it a few inches so they never speak directly into the capsule but their voice crosses through the pick up pattern of the capsule. If you speak directly into the mic you will always Pop your "P's" and "B's". I hope this helps.

You basically published a thorough and passionate defense of Zimmerman, complete with statistics proving that it was justified, on account of the fact that random acts of violence in a white majority population reflect the proportions that one would expect from a random sample. i.e. the percentage of poor black folks randomly fighting with white folks, is greater than the number of white folks randomly attacking black folks. Duh! There are fewer blacks. And random crimes hit people regardless of color. But that didn't stop you from buying that racist canard.

You defend a child killer and back it up with white supremacist propaganda.... of course you lost the narrative ya dunce. Most Americans are not racist idiots. The more you cleave to your irrational view, the more you'll vindicate the lefties who are saying it's a racist thing.

I hope you are joking about that. If not, this is proof positive that this whole thing is being used purely to jack up black voter turnout in November. There are somany teens being killed in Philadelphia it is ridiculous. And there have been quite a few teens arrested for flash-mobbing innocent locals and tourists on the street. It's beyond outrageous for Mike Nutter or Seth Williams to say a damn thing about anyone being killed in Florida when they have a slaughterhouse in their own yard.

402 I wish I was joking, rockmom. See Nutter's remarks on MSNBC yesterday with his follow-up as reported in the Pinky. The illustrious DA participated in the first Hoodie March and proudly published his photo, saw it on Twitchy. There is another Hoodie March tonight. And what has been the murder toll so far this year in Philly? 80? 85? I can't keep up. These people are beyond shame. I keep thinking I can't feel any more disgust but alas, they surprise me again again. I really have to get out of the area for my sanity my family's safety.

403 the thing about stuff like this is that the "discussion" being proposed is entirely one-sided. obviously there was a racial angle here, but i don't think a lot of Americans are interested in hearing how we still need to atone for our Original Liberal Sin of Racism, and the ones that are have the "correct" political views already and just want to lecture people.

i mean -- people are always gonna have certain generalized perceptions, positive or negative, of select groups of people, by race, gender, style of dress, whatever. the vast majority of the time they are not gonna manifest themselves in acts like this unless you've got other issues in the first place.

413 If that's Zimmerman heard on the 911 tape calling for help, and we know that Zimmerman contacted the police himself before he ever caught up to Martin, then I think that Zimmerman has been telling the truth throughout. If that's the case then the only reason this is a racial/political powder keg today is because the MSM/Dems want it to be. No legal or Judicial authorities saw it as prosecutable, now they suddenly do? We'll see as more facts come out, but that's where I am on this as of today.

There was no racial angle.

421 there can be a racial element without it being "this guy is an unreconstructed racist looking for black guys to beat up" dudez. remember Jesse Jackson talking about how he was scared of black youths on the street at night? yeah.

So if Zimmerman's story is correct, you are saying that he feared the person who mounted him and was beating his head might be moredangerous then he actually warranted, because he black?

Posted by: Entropy at March 26, 2012 02:31 PM (TULs6)

422 i'm saying it's not unreasonable to assume that part of the reason Zimmerman was suspicious of the guy in the first place was because he was a black dude in a hoodie. "colorblindness" sounds lovely but it doesn't really exist.

424 Well, Trayvon would be in an unauthorized part of the school if he was stealing stuff from an office or forced open a locked door. A 10 day suspension seems a little harsh for a fairly harmless violation.
Posted by: Retired Buckeye Cop at March 26, 2012 12:12 PM (M0NzJ)

It could also mean that Trayvon and a girl were in an empty classroom or portable building doing somethin' that even honors students do from time to time. It could mean that he was skipping class and hanging out under the bleachers with some other kids, smoking cigarettes. In my stepsons' public high school, there's no leeway on how long you are suspended for a given offense; each violation has a penalty already-set and the only thing up for debate is whether or not you actually did the 'crime'...which is hard to argue if you were caught in the act. Also, if you've been suspended before in the same school year (one-day suspension is the automatic penalty for truancy, which covers skipping a whole day or one class, unexcused) there is an automatic extra day of suspension for each previous suspension. It's bonkers. I don't know if that's true for Trayvon's school, and I'm not arguing whether the school's policy is right, but I can see how a kid could be suspended for what seems like a long time over not very much.

I don't think Zimmerman's guilt or innocence depends on whether or not there was a racial angle. I'm inclined to think there wasn't *much* of a racial angle, if any. Zimmerman can be non-racist and still be wrong, here. The police can be non-racist and still be wrong, too. The fact that Zimmerman was at home before Trayvon was even identified stinks, to me.

Posted by: jenny tries too hard at March 26, 2012 03:04 PM (snRY5)

425 Ah, so from wheatie's link, Trayvon was suspended because of a marijuana baggie.

Well, nevermind, then. All 17-year-olds who've smoked pot, ever, or had an empty baggie in their possession are clearly violent gangbangers.

You hitthe nail on the head. This is just the beginning, and it will probably follow the "Rash of Black Churches Burning" template from the '90's.

OTOH, we've got a march tonight here in Atlanta to demand repeal of Self-Defense laws like the one which exonerated Zimmerman. So maybe Obama and Holder are using this as a sub for the failed attempt at gun control by FF. So now Concealed-Carry and expanded Self-Defense laws are racist. Look for more sweet and innocent kids being gunned down by murderous teabaggers and rent-a-mobs marching at state capitols all Summer.

Posted by: 66chevelle at March 26, 2012 03:25 PM (QjSgY)

429 Great audio analysis. I had listened to the CNN audio myself several times and would go back and forth. If I was thinking "coons" I would definitely hear coons, and if I was thinking "punks" I could also feel certain I was hearing "punks." In other words, the interference from by brain's interpretative functions basically made it impossible to just hear the sounds. I'd always hear a word, and it would be whatever I was thinking of.
But similar sounding words have different audio profiles? Solved. I would put this kind of analysis over a person listening any day, once the question is narrowed down to which of two similar sounding words is being spoken.
