Well, since it looks like gas prices are going to be a major staple in this election or at least the summer, I thought it might be beneficial to see how much our government takes out of your wallet. The American Petroleum Institute has a handy dandy link (updated quarterly) that shows just how much the government makes takes. California, yeah, you're boned. Do note that the states with the highest taxes are mostly Democrat which could make the election very interesting if they don't buy into the oil companies are evil and stealing us blind BS. As a bonus, EagleSpeak had an excellent blog post on energy.

Of any given barrel, according to the Texas Oil and Gas Association, only about 19.5 gallons of gasoline are derived from an average barrel of crude. That's less than 1/2 of the barrel, but let's say we could actually by that 1/2 barrel for 1/2 the price of a whole barrel - it would cost $52 for 19.5 gallons or $2.67 per gallon (at $120 barrel it would be $3 per gallon). According to the U.S. Energy information agency, 76% of the price of gas at the pump is attributable to the cost of crude (see here), 11% to distribution, marketing and refining and - 12% to taxes. Your local taxes may vary. Here in North Carolina, it's about $.35 gallon. According to this site, Exxon (for example) makes about $.02 per gallon profit, or about 1/15 of what the state takes in.

Yeah, that's right. The government takes the biggest cut. Oh by the way, this won't help gas prices. East Coast To Lose 50% Of It's Refining Capacity. Gee, I wonder why that is?

Damn those budget cuts.

Sex News

That sound you hear? Just a bunch of egos going pfffftttt. Why Women Moan During Sex.

Last year, Gayle Brewer of the University of Central Lancashire and Colin Hendrie of the University of Leeds published their research on the topic - technically known as “copulatory vocalization” - in the Archives of Sexual Behavior. In the study, they asked 71 sexually active heterosexual women between ages 18 and 48 for more details about vocalization during sex.

The researchers found that many of the women did make noise, but not necessarily while they were having an orgasm. Instead, 66% said that they moaned to speed up their partner’s climax, and 87% stated that they vocalized during sex to boost his self-esteem.

This is pretty cool. Fun for the whole family! Play Games And Increase Brain Power.

Essentially, this site is meant to be like a gym for the brain. And like with a regular gym for physical fitness, regular training is required for results to show.

18 Did anyone read that story about the teacher who was fired after not noticing the 3rd graders in her class having oral sex under a desk? I wish the news item had specified gender for the kids.

I'm not as surprised as a lot of people about it though. We recently got a transfer student (a girl) who is a 5th grader and is really aggressive with the boys. She threw one boy to the ground, climbed on top of him and kissed him. She pantsed another boy to look at his penis. It's really starting to creep the kids out, and the parents have begun to wonder if maybe she was transferred from her old school because of this hyper sexualization.

23 In NC's defense on the gas tax. NC has more state roads than the state of Texas. Every damn county road is in the state system, so every damn county road has to be paid for by the state. Lots of states require the county or city to pay for their roads with local taxes, not NC.

Of course, having a democrat legislature for the entire 20th century didn't help much. There was never ANY corruption ANYWHERE with road contracts.

That's their story and they are sticking to it.

29 But CDR M, you are paying for the pleasure of being part of a vast brain experiment pool. Which on the one hand is great, so researchers can now have a broader pool to run research studies on. Yet, on the other hand, it is a bit insulting to have to pay for it. Though the idea is that you are getting something out of it too, because you are getting brain training.

Btiching aside, the site is cool, and the games were really fun. I do think they have the potential to really sharpen focus and help with recall. And they are extending the training for people who fo medical reasons (stroke, dementia etc.) have had mental deterioration. And to schools as well as an educational tool.

43 Cook County also charges sales tax on gasoline (as does Illinois). I'm sure the Illinois tax is included in the 57.3 for Illinois, but I imagine the local sales tax isn't, unless they averaged for the whole state or something.

And that's on the total cost, I imagine, so you are paying sales tax on the federal tax, as well as on whatever other taxes are on there.

And Chicago AND Cook County each charge a flat fee, too.

52 Well, she's only been at the school for about 3 weeks. According to another mom, who saw the parents the first day when they registered the girl, the parents are perfectly normal looking people but that doesn't mean much.

The thing is, I suspect the school knows more about the situation than we will ever be allowed to, because the teachers basically let the girl cuss right in class and don't stop her from saying things like "shut up you stupid bitch" to other girls even when she does it right in front of them. She isn't physically aggressive to the girls, only verbally offensive. But I guess to the boys she is a real holy terror.

Thankfully my son is not in her homeroom and since she's in 5th grade he doesn't have to encounter her in any pull out classes.

73 I do think either the girl is experiencing abuse at home (in which case I would hope that the school eventually intervenes instead of shunting her off to another school in the district) or that she has been the victim of some sort of sexual trauma. I would hope if the latter is the case that her parents are getting her the help she very obviously needs. Though if they are it certainly isn't working.

Less likely scenario, given that she lives in an affluent area and her parents didn't appear to be crack addled morons, but still, she could be seeing some sort of sexual situations at home.

Senator Carl Levin, chairman of the Senate Armed Services Committee, said in terms of progress in reconciliation talks much would depend on countering the cross-border threat from the insurgents having safe havens on Pakistan’s territory, including dealing with the threat from the Haqqani network.

90 Reblegged from the AM Open:

A friend's son has a degree in
art, has done a year of study in Italy, and is applying for MFA
programs. It's going rather well. One university has accepted him, and
wants a letter of committal signed and returned within a couple of weeks
if he wants a place held for him. He's also a candidate at Yale, likes
his prospects there, and the interview went well. But (being Yale) he
won't get a letter until several weeks after the other school's cutoff
date.

If he accepts the first offer, does it have the force of
contract? Can he change his mind and withdraw without penalty? Obviously
he can't just inquire of the party of the first part without seeming
ungentlemanly.

Before you begin the mockery that I would if asked
this, be aware that the artist is a conservative, an Eagle Scout, and
Southern, by the grace of God. I suppose policy varies by institution
and program, but what is the general arrangement now for grad school
acceptance?

96 Well you know I've been giving it some thought, because certainly if the little girl has had some sort of sexual trauma or was victimized in some way she is definitely due sympathy and a bit of tolerance.

On the other hand, at what point do you draw the line in terms of her turning around and very openly victimizing other kids. I think the boys have just as much of a right to feel safe at school.

100 Billy Bob,

I thought that CMD R lives in NC. The difference in state gas tax is about 20 cents/gal.

Good night morons.

Posted by: Jimbo at March 24, 2012 10:36 PM (O3R/2)

101 Regarding gasoline taxes and prices a few points are worth mentioning:

1. Taxes only are part of the story. You also have to factor in environmental fees, which are a separate tax. Every time you fill up your tank in California, for example, you're paying a minimum of *five* separate taxes: (1) the federal excise (gasoline) tax, (2) the state excise tax, (3) the federal environmental fee, (4) the state environmental fee, (5) the state sales tax. Then in many counties there is one final, 6th! layer of taxation: the county's separate gasoline tax.

2. It's true that the likes of Exxon make about 2 cents per gallon sold. What a lot of people don't realize, however, is that's Exxon's gross profit margin, not their net margin. They also have overhead to cover. Wholesale distributors of gasoline earn about 1 cent per gallon gross margin. What about the retailers? Well, they earn a fraction of one cent per gallon gross margin and in many instances, depending upon price action in their local markets, the gas they sell is a complete loss leader.

3. Lack of refining capacity is the biggest problem with the gasoline markets. The markets could handle $100 per barrel oil if we had enough refining space. But we went decades without building a single refinery anywhere in the country. Because Democrats and their allies on the far left of the "environmental" spectrum blocked all such efforts. Now we're paying the price. Literally.

***
It is tied to the demonization of the war.

The left wanted a reason to go after Bush so hard, and the whole "He stole the election" meme failed. So the war had to become the worst thing ever.

And every night, Cheney was out there arguing for a reasonable prosecution of the war. And this made him their target. Rumsfeld too. So we went in a few scant months from liberals admitting they were happy the Bush team was running the war to arguments that killing jihadis was wrong...

175 I'm not as surprised as a lot of people about it though.

Essentially, the people who are likely to quote Stewart are not going to be happy if it he objectively isn't cool...

244 I've had mice in the walls. Key point is to find and patch the hole they're getting in through. They might have made it. They also might have made another so they can run around your pantry at night.

First you isolate them (throw some poison through the hole when you patch it). Then they die. Then they stink (it smells like a badly sealed toilet junction, sort of). After some number of days, the decomposition ends, and all's back to normal.

At least it's not a squirrel. I hear that getting rid of their death stink can involve an excursion behind the drywall.

335 I need to go to bed. D'oh is snoring so loudly I can hear him from the far end of the house. We actually talked about snoring at dinner, and whether it's acceptable to kick or nudge the snorer. I go for the "place pillow over face until breathing stops" method when I'm really tired and pissed off.

Haven't tried it yet, thankfully.

John used to snore like that. There were times a pillow was very tempting. I keep waiting to miss the snoring, but (nearly two years later) as much as I miss him I don't miss that at all.

338 @169 Thank you Blk Orch, one of the others is Washington, and there is a studio school in NYC but I think he's been warned off the "lifestyle" there. Not sure, it might be just the tasteless food and rents too high.

I have not met the kid! Seen some samples of his work though, and he's solid. I agree about the MFA; several old friends got it in craftsy-arts, and I was in a program for creative writing. They're immensely satisfying, or not...in writing, there's a tendency to develop these mutual admiration societies. I got "politicized" right out of that.

Any rate, this guy has both eyes open and thinks he can survive in that atmosphere. I wish him the best, since it already seemed to me decades ago that everyone who wasn't cookie-cutter, well, you know, was being chased out of the departments. I don't think A Certain Party should have whole fields of human activity all to themselves just because no one else shows up.

The Yale Effect has to be even more valuable to a painter than to a lawyer. Make a few friends there, get a small reputation, and you'll end up with a lifetime of commissions as your classmates get rich. Make a strong enough impression, and you might even bull your artistic ideas past their lack of personal taste. Cold-blooded? Sure, but engineers and designers of every other stripe do it. Why suffer needlessly?

349 No I agree, comatus - when I went to school William Bailey was the head of the Yale program - I would have loved to attend Yale! It's a great program.

I went to a "studio" school - don't want to be too detaily - here in Philly it's easy to guess. It was worthwhile personally, but rough in other ways - we decidedly DID NOT support each other but this institution is like that even undergrad - studio schools can be like that.

That said, he would love my alma mater I think. Maybe. I have a love/hate relationship as you can tell! Long history; great tradition; great artists.

If one of my children were to go to an art college now, say, I'd love for them to go to PAFA, NY Studio School, or the Boston Museum School. I still love the "studio" schools.

378 I don't know about how little fun women have during sex, but I can't imagine the majority of women don't also moan because they're having fun/feeling hot/being pleasured, orgasm or not. Yeah, I understand moaning to make your man feel like a sexual rockstar (I do it for my fiancé sometimes), but that shldn't come as any surprise, MUCH LESS deflate any egos or anything… that's the same reason he talks about how cute your nose is or how how your abs are or how sexy your hips are to make you feel desirable

Moaning to make him feel like he's doing a great job -- esp when he IS! -- encourages him and keeps his full sexual attentions focussed squarely on YOU (which is the same reson he tells you about how hot you make him :p).

Still, almost ALL women I'm sure ALSO moan because they are being pleasured…or even just feel really sexy. I know I'm pretty vocal even in foreplay and all throughout intercourse before orgasm, especially when my boyf hits an especially pleasurable nerve or vocally makes me feel really sexy about myself. Even just a word of encouragement about my performance can make me moan back in gratitude.

392 Jake, thanks for reminding me, I have been meaning to watch that documentary.

I don't need to get into various takes on prophecy, eshcatology, Armageddon, etc. But I do know this:

1) The reborn State of Israel has full sovereignty over Jerusalem.
2) The then-secular, socialist govt of Israel made a political decision in 1967 to allow a Muslim religious entity, the Waqf, to administer the Temple Mount.
3) That Waqf has grown more bold in its anti-Joooo incitement, and more intolerant of non-Muslims on the Temple Mount.
4) Esp. since the Iranian revolution in 1979, Muslims around the world have responded to generosity and moderation with escalating violence and hatred.
5) The people of Israel are much less secular than they used to be.
6) The Holy Temple was destroyed by Roman Legions, and not because it was in any way rendered obsolete by an "evolving" faith.
7) All mainstream Judaism accepts that the faith cannot be complete or normal until the Temple is restored.
The leading conservative figure in Israel (Moshe Feiglin) is a strong supporter of the restoration of the Temple. And he will be a guest on the program tomorrow.

If a few demonically violent Muslims will see the restoration as a signal to end the world, that's their problem. What are they gonna do--plan mass violence against the Joooooos?!

Better at OUR schedule than theirs.

From an on-line biography for Lee: "Spike Lee was born Shelton Jackson Lee on March 20, 1957, in Atlanta, Georgia."

Makes me think of the Spongebob episode where Plankton's computer wife is behind Plankton while he's talking to his kinfolk and her screen keeps showing his real name "Sheldon." The crowd laughs, and when Plankton turns around, the screen is blank.

And I suppose I do have my point to fling into the debate: in most pictures I think the topline of the breast is too harsh, looking too much like the artificial circle that bad bolt-ons give a person. But as I can only comment on the female form as an artist, not with sexual appreciation, don't know if it counts in this arena.

When I was in college, thirty-something years ago, we had a bit of an arms race going with rum.....to the point where a standard demonstration was to take a shot of 151, gargle it, and swallow. I got picked to demo the process, as I was quite young and looked younger -- and then we all got to laugh at the Freshmen doing a epic fails on their attempts. And then we had the "green death" -- a lovely layered drink in a shotglass, with ice-cold green creme de menthe, clear 100-proof schnapps, and straw-colored 151. Since their specific gravities are so different, it's relatively easy to pour the layers.
Actually, come to think of it, I'm surprised that I remember much of college at all.

So, what with all the drinking and such, I drifted "off the reservation" and stopped watching TV in college. Afterwards, I was really involved with trying to bootstrap a career and chasing women, so no TV there, either. So it comes to pass that I have one of my most WTF? moments.

After about 5 years of no TV and scrambling, I go back to the 'rents for one of my infrequent visits. And, y'know, they're old. And they have some sort of unmemorable slop for dinner. And they eat it in the "living room" with the television on, while making casual conversation as if it were not there. And all the flashing images I see out of the corner of my eye are very distracting, but I'm trying to manage a conversation.....and it gradually dawns on me that the show they're ignoring is some half-clad dance extravaganza that is just on the broadcastable side of the line from being soft porn. And this is going on while I'm trying to make casual conversation with my parents at their house, and they're treating it as totally normal -- like a rerun of I Love Lucy. I feel pretty sure that I'd have been disciplined for bringing such trash into the house when I was in High School -- now I'm out of college, and it's the stuff on the tube.

Lol.. well a few years ago when I was still married and living at the other house our next door neighbor was a cop.

I remember my dad coming over for a get together and were outside grilling, the next door neighbor puts his 4 year old and 2 year old in the car, with no car seats.

Dad gets very pissed and tells me he just can't believe it. How incredibly irresponsible for a police officer of all people to be putting those kids into a car like that with no car seats.

I looked at him and laughed. "Dad, don't you remember when we were kids? You'd throw us in the back of the truck. No seats, no seatbelts, nothing - and we'd be driving 50 or 60 miles an hour all over those county roads on our way to the dump with a load of all sorts of sharp, heavy stuff in the back with us?

719 "Heh, my parents weren't big on carseats or seatbelts either."

It was funnier than hell - he never really thought about it before I think. When we were kids we almost never wore seatbelts, spent half of our time riding around in the back of pickup trucks, etc. I can remember my little sister sitting on my mom's lap, neither wearing a seatbelt, while my brother and I were sitting on the siderails of a pickup while Dad drove.

And back then nobody thought there was anything wrong with that at all. Our neighbors weren't thinking "How incredibly unsafe! That's despicable!" when we drove by. They just smiled and waved and we waved back.

My cousin was zipping along the back roads at about 50 with his dog in the back of his pickup, and hit a bump just as the dog was jumping up on a wheelwell to stick his head in the slipstream. My cousin glanced back to see how the bump had done, and there was no dog, so he swerved to the side and hit the brakes -- and he's thinking, "oh, shit."

So he gets out of the truck and looks back on the cloud of dust from going onto the shoulder and sliding to a stop, and after starting to walk back down the road, he sees movement -- then his dog pops out of the dust, running hell-for-leather toward him. Evidently, after he hit the ground and stopped rolling, the dog figured his best chance was to try to catch up to the truck.

748 "The Sun Also Sets"
By Mark Steyn
...as elsewhere on my recent travels, the consensus among the politicians I
met (at least in private) was that Washington lacked the will for
meaningful course correction, and that, therefore, the trick was to
ensure that, when the behemoth goes over the cliff, you’re not dragged
down with it. It is faintly surreal to be sitting in paneled offices
lined by formal portraits listening to eminent persons who assume the
collapse of the dominant global power is a fait accompli. . . .
Greece’s total debt is a few rinky-dink billions, a rounding error in
the average Obama budget. Only America is spending trillions.

Posted by: maverick muse at March 25, 2012 08:01 AM (lpWVn)

749 You know, the problem with Steyn is... If he's right, there's really nothing left to do but spend what little time we have left fapping to some nice lesbian porn.

Apparently the accounts of the newly discovered witness in the Zimmerman case are having an affect.

Somehow NBC News was on at dinner last night and they started walking back their claim that Zimmerman was a racist nut who just wanted to kill a black person.

I just walked past the TV and some alphabet channel was discussing it. I caught the words "we may never really know what took place, but..."

Its a shame it never would've happened without the British press and Drudge.

If the MFM was in charge, Zimmerman would have already been lynched, but in an objective impartial bi-partisan way.

Posted by: Hrothgar at March 25, 2012 08:10 AM (i3+c5)

752 Perhaps there is some political recalculation going on in the Zimmerman case. Democrats might be fearful of an Hispanic backlash IF it looks like Martin instigated the violence. Unfortunately for the Democrats, their mindless followers won't step back from the ledge once they feel that their race was attacked. Once you let loose the dogs of race war, they're awfully hard to call back.

753 Some black chick alleged journalist on MSNBC gave an extended diatribe yesterday about how great the black men in her life are, and how terrible there is no anti-lynching law on the books. And even mentioned how libs in the Senate itook it upon themselves to apologize on behalf of OTHER people because their predecessors didn't pass it 50 years earlier (how presumptuous was THAT? But a typically empty gesture libs love so much).

So wht is she saying? Lynching is legal? Surely not.

She also threw out all sorts of stats, including the black male death by homicide rate... Oddly, despite her extended anti-white rant, not one word about who exactly the perpetrators of that rate are. Wouldn't fit the narrative.

755 IIRC, the gas tax chart is inaccurate; California's worse than it first appears.

Cali's fuel tax is a percentage based on fuel price, not volume, like a sales tax. So, they take more money (and the consumer gets more boned) as the gas price goes up...

756 I know I am late to the thread, but as you can see, border gas stations in NJ are VERY popular with NY drivers. My relatives in Rockland and Orange counties all get their gas in either Mahwah, Montvale or Northvale, NJ. These stations make a killing because of NJ's lower tax rates. Right now, the difference is about 70 cents a gallon.
