Overnight Open Thread
Whatever the ultimate source of the recent pushback to the Navy Department’s alternative energy plans, it apparently is not working. The service announced Friday that it undertook its latest test with biofuels at sea, this time aboard the frigate USS Ford. The Ford sailed down to San Diego from its homeport in Everett, Wash. on a 50–50 blend of biofuel and marine diesel, and the ship’s main engines drank it down just fine.
The announcement did not say how much the Navy paid for the biofuel the Ford burned, but at, let’s say, $16 per gallon times half the 25,000 gallons, that’s about $200,000 for just the biofuel in this test. Compare that to roughly $75,000 for a load of standard marine diesel, and you can see where the cost argument comes from. Mabus and other alternative fuel boosters acknowledge upfront the service is paying a lot more than it would for traditional petroleum, but that’s the point: The Navy has to help fuel-makers cover their research and it has to create a market and economies of scale that could one day make biofuel competitive. Even if biofuel does not cost the same as oil, Mabus has said, it could still be a better deal for the Navy because it would be immune from the price shocks that can hit the standard energy market.
It's all just BS. Pay a whole lot more for something that is much harder to get access to due to limited resupply points and its rarity in the global market. Not to mention it's many times more expensive in an era of DoD budget cuts. The Navy shouldn't be "helping the fuel-makers cover their research, create the bio-fuel market" etc. They should be focusing on readiness, training and maintenance. This news does not help the green cause either. Amyris Gives Up Making Biofuels.
This is a common theme for advanced biofuels companies. Range Fuels, one of the first of the current crop of companies, recently went out of business. Others are giving up on making biofuels too, also hoping to break into markets for higher value chemicals.

Somebody seriously thought this was a logical statement? Not only is this blend inherently more expensive than 100% marine diesel, the mix is still comprised of 50% marine diesel and thus is NOT immune from direct oil price shocks.

Lol.. apologies, I compiled that posting from a lot of separate posts so I might have missed something, I'll go back through just to be sure. There were actually three emails that went out to my entire group about the Che incident.
The first came from che-boy's supervisor, it was the one in which he basically said that it was my fault that they couldn't wear those kinds of shirts to work anymore because I whined to HR. There was my response to that email, in which I set the record straight that I wasn't the one that got HR involved, he was.
Then there was one final email - which is still something of a mystery, that copied all of the death threat emails I received and my mocking request to HR about what constituted a "credible" death threat. It was sent from the HR general email account to my entire group, and to the Managing Director, and that's what prompted her involvement.
Hopefully that clears that part up at any rate. Ok, gotta go, were pulling into the restaurant parking lot. You know I've owned this car for over 20 years and this is the first time I've ever ridden in the passenger seat?

I do not think the money thing is the greatest advantage that the horde has to offer. I would argue that research and messaging - crafting or propagating - would be our strongest suits. We clearly have a bunch of people that like to know stuff, babble about it, have computers, access to all of the internets, and are inclined to follow current events. oh yeah we are all propaganda resistant or propaganda proof or we would be watching television or hitting the like or +1 buttons at kos. the downside of course is that herding morons is likely an order of magnitude more complicated than herding cats.

I have known some guys that will wear nylons when they are skiing in
colder climes as an additional layer of insulation. it does make some
sense since the fabric would wick moisture away from the skin and they
are about as thin as you can get, however, there is the whole mancard
thing and I would rather have as slightly thicker pair of long underwear
and a man card instead of having to leave the mancard in the room.

I work what's called a "floating schedule" meaning that sometimes my schedule can change from week to week depending on business needs. So I make it a habit to sign into my work email on Friday and again on Sunday, just to check to make certain they haven't made a last minute change to my schedule for Monday.
I signed into my work email a few minutes ago, and found an email in my inbox about the incident. The other guy's supervisor sent it to the entire group, and I won't quote the whole thing but basically he posted a "reminder" to everyone working the evening shift that they could no longer wear "Che" T-shirts and that they would have to be a lot more careful in the future because apparently there was one person who might become offended and report them to HR if they were not. He said he could not comment on who it was that was offended, but apologized to everyone that there wardrobe choices were now more limited as a result. I guess either he forgot that the group in question went out to all of us, or perhaps he was hoping I'd be too ashamed to do anything about it.
Being part of the group, I responded to the entire group - I introduced myself, and stated that I was indeed the one that had pointed out the T-shirt was offensive. I told them that while the supervisor in question hadn't released my name in the email, that I'd be more than happy to do so myself. I also pointed out that I was not the one that got HR involved, that this was erroneous information. I told them that if anyone had any questions as to exactly how it all transpired, or as to why I might be offended by a Che T-shirt, I'd be more than happy to discuss it with them at length. Since such a thing really wasn't business related, I offered them one of my home email addresses instead.
Yup.. better get that resume ready.. having a feeling I'll be going down to HR pretty much as soon as I show up Monday morning.

Bush and Vice President Dick Cheney from ordering an attack on Syria’s secret desert nuclear facility.
According to journalist Bob Woodward, the analysts worked to dissuade Mr. Bush from attacking the al Kibar reactor facility, which Israeli jets eventually destroyed, claiming there was “low confidence” that it was for nuclear arms.
“At the CIA afterward, the group of specialists who had worked for months on the Syrian reactor issue were pleased they had succeeded in avoiding the overreaching so evident in the Iraq WMD case,” Mr. Woodward wrote in The Washington Post.
“So they issued a very limited-circulation memorial coin. One side showed a map of Syria with a star at the site of the former reactor. On the other side the coin said, ‘No core/No war.’”
A spokesmen for the director of national intelligence had no immediate comment.
John Bolton, former ambassador to the United Nations and the State Department’s key arms-proliferation policymaker in the Bush administration, said he is concerned about the reported CIA politicization.
“Thank goodness the Israelis didn’t listen to them,” Mr. Bolton said. “This is a real breach of the ‘wall of separation’ between intelligence and policy.”
A former senior intelligence official said he was astonished that CIA analysts would take such a blatant policy position.
“Whose side are these guys on?” the former official asked.
A second former official said that until the Woodward report, it was thought the State Department and White House National Security Council were suppressing intelligence on the Syria-North Korean reactor facility to avoid upsetting the six-nation nuclear talks on Pyongyang’s nuclear program.
CIA spokeswoman Marie Harf said the coin was given to men and women from five intelligence agencies who worked on locating the Syrian nuclear reactor and monitoring it before and after its destruction. The coin also was given to those who kept “U.S. policymakers informed of rapidly changing developments.”
“The commemorative medallion was provided in July 2008 by the agency to formally recognize their skill, commitment, and contribution to America’s security,” she told Inside the Ring.
“To try to read anything more into it is wrong and unfair, both to these intelligence professionals and to the policy customers they served.”

And another thing, that oil, which is not edible or good for many other things, is not susceptible to bad weather, disease, pests. Think of all the things that affect food harvests and the think how much worse if would be if you had to worry about losing your food and your fuel for the same reason. well, there is an argument to be made for it from an insulation perspective for skiing or other physical cold weather activities, but not as a fashion thing. Personally, I have never worn them because I favor nomex long underwear for cold weather skiing. It is not as warm as some of the nylon options but I need the flame retardant properties - I ski pretty had and as fast as I am going you can build up enough friction - even on ice - to burst into flames. Lots of times, instead of clouds of powder I have a trail of steam from superheated snow and ice following me down the slope. but that is just me. some guys can wear the mantyhose.

SNL hasn't been funny in a very, very long time. For a couple seasons they'd get maybe one guy or sometimes a couple of guys on at one time who were actually somewhat funny, but even a lot of them were hit and miss.

I think a lot of people thought it was cool to vote for the first black president and they did. Now it's been done. My thought process? Well the most effective attack I've seen on the left in years was what was done with Acorn. A couple of kids posing as a pimp and prostitute, exposing Acorn's real agenda.

For years the MSM has sold the lie that Planned Parenthood is all about caring for women, blah blah blah. Just imagine video showing what they are really all about? Have the girl ask, "Is the doctor performing the abortion a surgeon?" - Basically the sort of questions one would ask before any major surgery. My guess is these vultures would sell that abortion hard, try to talk her out of an ultrasound, etc.
That would be one front I think that would be highly effective, and a target rich environment.

It may be wishful thinking but I tend to think that the "strong silent type" is more of a conservative personality type. I know despite my vitriolic rantings and ravings here I just go about my business and do what I am going to do without needing to tell anyone. Anyway, I think conservatives are not as vocal about their discontent and are not well suited to protests but if you indicate how something is to their advantage or the disadvantage of people that hate them I think they would be inclined to go along - albeit quietly.
I have not paid to see a move in a theatre, on pay per view, or on disc for years. the onl way I ever see one is if I am at someone's house and they put one in or turn one on. I absolutely refuse to give them one damn dime.

I share your thoughts on movies. I rarely feel like sitting down to watch a movie and certainly not in a theatre. All things being equal I greatly prefer books over movies. Additionally, I really dislike music videos, I am much happier never knowing what silly video they want to tie a song to or anything about the singer other than the sound of their voice. the recent shots of sinead oconnor have ruined her songs for me - I cannot hear there without thing of her pictures,
anyway, they have the right to hate me all they want and I have the right to spend my money elsewhere.

It was good to see action sequences that were realistic. So many action movies rely heavily on CGI special effects, and feature the heroes doing backflips through the air while shooting the bad guys. It's like they have to keep pushing the envelope to stimulate the senses of moviegoers who have become jaded.
But it wasn't all guns n' explosions, though there were plenty of both. The scenes with the wives and children, as well as the ending, were also emotionally draining. In short, the movie was entertaining in a way that Hollywood used to do but seems to have forgotten how. It compares favorably to the best war movies of generations past.

I have 1 uncle still alive on my Dad's side who was in the Navy in WWII. He turns 81 next month. I tell him every chance I get how thankful I am for his service, and I say the same to my 2 brothers and all the young ones in my family who have served.

I am not sure. The anecdotal evidence, such as when someone posts a link to a naked ginger, or especially a nekkid ginger, is that it is is high but I get a sense is fluctuates. I have a sense that the lurker tide ebbs in february.

I am not sure, but it did seem like the volume and velocity of comments declined in february, especially in the night thread. I suppose it is easy enough to check the comment count, but it also seems that the lag between comments was higher not the usual bada bing, badda bang, badda boom back and forth more typing into the void. then again, what the fluke to I know. I just assumed it was part of the post holiday blues that everyone goes through.
in all seriousness, your absence, I believe, had a quantifiable impact on the thread count. you type a lot - questions and answers.

I have to agree with some of the previous posters... while I admire wolverine, of the SoS saga, he needs to rethink the physical confrontations...

Take TV shows. Let's say you have someone who loves "Glee" and wants to talk about the show all the time. Don't say "I won't watch them because they mock my beliefs or conservatives", say "I don't watch the show, it doesn't do anything for me" or "I don't watch much TV"

I don't know the history but I wouldn't be surprised if they gave in to a union demand at some point.
I don't think it makes them hypocrites though. The staff and students are two separate groups of people. The students are free to look elsewhere for coverage but it's kind of like the traditional parental edict, "As long as you're living under my roof, etc., etc."
The university isn't the only game in town for health coverage. Extending the offers to students is a courtesy, not a lock-in. Most of the people I ever met who were Georgetown grads tended to come from fairly well off families and the idea that they ever had to choose between birth control and a better grade of ramen noodles is laughable.
The lecture is the same as I'd give any whiny student. If you have any aptitude you can do it fast by focusing on your studies to the exclusion of nearly all else, or you can do it slow and try to have a lot of time for dates and partying plus holding down a job to pay for that stuff.
Which goes back to the least expensive and OTC birth control of them all: aspirin. Place it between both knees and hold it there. Extremely high rate of effectiveness. Especially for a supposed full-time student.

If he worked underneath me and the shirt wasn't allowed by my boss I would send him home and tell him to change. Amazon has Amazon Studios. They have a yearly screenplay contest. Grand prize is $100,000. Bing the 2011 winner which is called Origin of the Species. I read the synopsis and just stopped. To me it struck as really bad and unoriginal. Touching Blue and Gaia 4 had more originality but they lost.
So yes for 2012 I am trying to write a decent screenplay to at least win one of the monthly prizes. I dare not aim for brilliance because it would be casting pearls before swine I think.
So perhaps you should adapt SOS' story for a screenplay or novel. Fictionalize it a bit with some salacious banter and try to have Bruce Willis play SOS. And share with SOS the win. Possible title - Breaking Che.

I think robtr missed a couple of things....there was already an anti-political t-shirt policy in place -- but it was being selectively enforced. When called on it, Che-boy, his supervisor, and the HR Director asserted that Che wasn't "political" -- that it was an "established fact" that he was a hero and not a communist mass-murderer.
SoS wasn't challenging Che-boy's free expression, but rather the framing of the argument. If Che-boy wanted to wear his shirt elsewhere.....fine. But it's not like a USMC shirt would have been allowed in the confines of SoS' workplace.....doublethink was too well ingrained. This is, BTW, demonstrated in the way that Che-boy is still employed while his sup and the HR director aren't.

Can't blame him, since it has been difficult to keep up with everything, especially if one did not follow the story from the beginning. SoS didn't go to HR and report the Che-kid and didn't threaten him either. He simply went up to him, said his shirt was offensive and that he would appreciate it if he didn't wear it to work again. That should have been the end of it. But, because the leftists at his workplace are a bunch of fucking douchebags, everything has escalated.

Yes it was and the food was delicious and that had chocolate covered strawberries and dsrk chocolate dipped bite of flourless chocolate cake. and the meat was good and no rubber chicken.
levin was on fire. i wish our prez hopefuls could go to an event like that because i think they could learn an awful lot about their constituency. Oddly the people sitting across from us knew my best pal Clawd, the only person just like me. They told a hilarious story about here and i had to say wait... then showed them a pic "THIS person?" they were all like YEAH! it was pretty funny. i told them "OK, well now you know what i look like when i am ticked off." Bebe seemed to have a great time. I was only sad that we had a hard time driving out that far and back. I had to drive us home from about AltaDena on, and you KNOW i dont drive. But Grim was just that tired.

its off we have had many of the same life experiences. we have the same taste in food, clothes and big sunglasses, and loud paisleys. we both ride cowhorses drink pots of coffee, and put too much tobasco on our foods. tho she smokes and i quit with the cigars, and i put milk in my coffee, and her guy is in the air force... truly hilarious. oh and we both wear pointy glasses with crystals on them, just her are black and mine are lavender... Sadly, her hairs not as long, and we both are sick in ways we wish we werent.
but her chiweenies are stinkin cute, and she takes em everywhere. I wish i could do that with my cats but the hairless wonder is fragile, tho the new guy might do it.

Yeah it was my mistake. Sorry but I read SOS 's first post on this. He said nothing about it being against company policy. He said the shirt offended him personally. Well fucking cry me a river.
Like I said in my "rant" if it was against company policy and it was my fucking job to enforce that policy I would have sent the douche home to change. I've done that before with no consequence. If he felt differently he could have let the company decide. If they decided in his favor then that would have ended it. That isn't the way it was described. Sorry but in all of our rights in this country the right to not be offended isn't there.
I havn't read all of the up dates because I disagreed with the first 10,000 but against company policy wasn't mentioned. Being personally offeneded was the spark that lit this fire.

Well I don't see how, they didn't get sacked because the the damn shirt was against company policy, as I understand it they got sacked because of some email BS and that they ignored death threats.

I was organizing some bookmarks into folders and I accidentally hit delete instead of paste and they were gone. there is no back or undo function for that maneuver. It also depends greatly on what you're rendering. That why we've got test suites like Uengine and 3Dmark but a closed platform can be hard to get benchmarks loaded on unless Apple cooperates.
One item I don't have any information on is whether the iPad GPU in any generation has a hardware video scaler. This was a big asset for the Xbox 360 where most games are rendered at or around 720p internally scaled to the display at whatever it expects. (I used my Xbox 360 with KVM switch on my desktop going to a 22" 1680x1050 monitor for the first year I had it. Worked great until I got an HDTV.) Having the built-in scaler means the 1080 output is consistent rather than leaving it to the high variability of the TV's scaler. This is why some PS3 games look inferior despite the advantage in rendering horsepower. Having a dedicated scaler would help a lot on using iPhone software of the pre-Retina Display generations.
Most iPad stuff looks like PS2 or original Xbox on a VGA display and scaled for the iPad's 1024x768. It's pretty nice for a mobile device but decidedly retro in terms of what it allows. Which is what I generally expect from mobile devices compared to the latest gen consoles.
The new iPad is supposed to up the ante on GPU power quite a bit but the pixel count alone will account for much of that.
