Ed Shultz Pockets $200,000 From Unions While Shouting Nonsensically About Them

Shouting nonsensically in a good way, I mean. I mean, he means it to be in a good way.

I don't understand what this Angry Red Faced Fat Old White Man is saying half the time. I assume he's pro-union.

Should this be a big story? I suppose it should, as MSNBC is supposedly a "news organization."

But it's a clownshow. Everyone knows it's a clownshow. The clowns on it know it's a clownshow.

In related news, a hooker will give you a blow-jay for $50.

In fiscal 2011, Schultz received $190,000 from the Communications Workers of America for what the U.S. Department of Labor categorized as "representational activities."

For swag like that, you'd think Schultz could at least get it right about the CWA name. Instead, he invariably refers to it as the "Communication" Workers of America when its president, Larry Cohen, is a guest on Schultz's radio show, as Cohen often is.

Schultz also received $9,900 in fiscal 2011 from the International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers (IBEW), putting his union haul for the year at almost $200,000.

[breakdown of Howlin' Ed's union haul from 2007-2011 omitted; see the link]

All told, Schultz has been paid $337,490 by unions in the last seven years, according to the Labor Department. These same records show no payments from unions to Schultz between fiscal years 2000 to 2004 -- before Schultz became such a passionate advocate for unions over the airwaves.

Isn't this payola?

Even if Howlin' Ed broke no laws here, doesn't basic ethics require disclosure?

Disclosure isn't hard. Honest people tend to disclose reflexively, without being nudged to do so. If I have some conflict or interest, I can write about a story, but I should at least note that I may have some bias in the background.

Is that so hard? No, it's not.

Meanwhile Howlin' Ed is pocketing almost $350,000 from unions, while having their officials on for interviews frequently, and not saying boo about his direct financial interest in promoting unions.

And then in 2010 his payment is listed as "union administration." What does that mean? I guess "pay-for-play" sounded too... accurate.

Verum Serum wants to know if MSNBC knew -- and if they knew, why they didn't insist on disclosure?

Either Ed lied to MSNBC, or Ed told the truth to MSNBC, and then MSNBC lied to its viewers.

Someone lied.

Here's what I think: I think the left is all-in in this election. I think we stand on a teeter-totter between full-on socialism and a massive repudiation of it. I think the left knows that, and this is do or die for them.

I hope we get there, too.

I hope this is not the case because a "massive repudiation" of our welfare state isn't going to happen. Even 70% of Tea Partiers oppose substantial reforms to Social Security and Medicare.

Maybe I'm overly pessimistic, but I doubt our experiments in socialism will continue and expand until the inevitable national bankruptcy.

6 They lie about everything.

And they're almost inevitably what they accuse others of (corrupt, racist, sexist, etc.).

How many times has a "grass roots activist" or townhall questioner turned out to be a paid activist? Didn't we have one of those at every left townhall prior to the 2008 election?

Schultz is just one of them, part of the coordinated, well-funded leftist power machine.

People keep saying "this is the most important election in my lifetime" and other people say "Gee, I hear that EVERY election".

If you've been driving towards a cliff for 60 years, sometimes faster, sometimes slower but almost always in the same direction then you get close to that cliff, and disaster, each year. Each election we have a chance to slow down, reverse, change direction or speed up. The cliff is REAL DAMN CLOSE now. So this election IS the most important because the previous important elections didn't produce the right results.

174 Okay, this is a mostly-serious question, but it requires some setup.

If:

1) The Left really are an organized conspiracy (see the main post, or Journolist), and
2) They really are working to bring socialism to America, and
3) We know that socialism has failed everywhere it has been tried, and
4) They can't simply be stupid or they wouldn't be so successful,

Then:

The only logical conclusion is that they actively and consciously desire to make us all poorer and less free, and possibly kill many of us.

So my mostly-serious question is:

Why aren't we out shooting liberals?

And the followup:

When does it reach that point?

183 Neither party is going to cut the government until the cutting via legislation is redundant. That's because every spending line and regulatory scheme favors some vocal and visible group. The people that it hurts directly or indirectly (everyone) are invisible. So any attempt to cut before the money runs out would be met with a din of disgruntled stakeholders and applified by the MSM making it appear to be a mandate against reform.

Another reason is that because GDP is a progressive design, and is thus a formula created to support the growth of the state, any cut will be measured as a drop in GDP. And since actual reform would mean at least a 40% cut in government, then the corresponding drop in GDP would be massive, even though it would spark a monster growth spurt.

On the other side, the GDP formula will have to be one of the first things to go.

184 I guess they would be considered a family car. Not cool to me.

Yeah, that's what I was thinking .. .... Looks like they were kind of a mid-market family car. Thanks!!

185 Here's what I think: I think the left is all-in in this election. I think we stand on a teeter-totter between full-on socialism and a massive repudiation of it. I think the left knows that, and this is do or die for them.

I think you are right it is their high water mark. curiously the precipitate it themselves by overreaching so much with zerodency. now they are haveing their richard gere moment, they've "got nowhere else to go" so all they can do is double down on their position.

rehashing critical race theory now, on the internet, and tying it to zero and everything the left wants and does is an excellent play. you can have an ongoing, detailed conversation showing the players and the materials to everyone.

it is interesting to see how many people have persevered in the wilderness waiting for this to happen.

190 I think we stand on a teeter-totter between full-on socialism and a massive repudiation of it.

That is the single most scary-true statement I've read in a month. And we had better get on board with this fight for real, or we will be well and totally screwed by the left, and our country will be gone.

191 It's only the left's high water mark if Obama loses. If he gets another term we'll all be under water.

200 Amazing. And Juan Williams gets canned from NPR for speaking the truth. We have communists running the country-they believe "everyone should have a right to the good life." Yeah, every one of their cronies and donors. Bastards. Kick the bums out! Throw Pelosi in jail for insider trading!
