Chris Christie Blasts Student As "Idiot"

Apparently Christie's planning to fold the Rutgers (Camden) Campus into nearby Rowan University. I imagine this is a cost-saving move.

It might even be a prestige-increasing move, as there are three Rutgers campuses (another in New Brunswick, another in Newark) but the actual Rutgers is in New Brunswick. The other two seem to have been "branded" Rutgers or something.

I don't know.

So a second year law student at Camden, representing himself as a former SEAL, complained. Current students would still graduate with "Rutgers" on their diplomas. I guess that's the important thing (though is the Rutgers name actually worth much?).

He started asking, "What about my kids?" or something. Like, what about my kids who twenty years from now hypothetically go to a college called Rowan, not Rutgers. Will their degrees say Rutgers on them, Governor?

Um, no. If it's that important to them maybe they should Dream Big and apply to Rutgers.

Anyway, Christie got very hot with him, and called him an idiot.

Update: John Lilyea from This Ain't Hell checked with his Fake SEAL Busting sources and says this guy is definitely a SEAL.

Kind of whiny though.

59 It's more like "satellite" or "regional" campuses, than "branding," I'd say. It's pretty typical of state schools. Purdue in IN has several regional campuses. They're often sort of like 4-year community colleges with non-typical college populations.

Maybe part of the problem is that the typical student of one of these regional schools isn't the kind of person who can pack up and move to go to college and the want to attend a school in their neighborhood.

This guy seems to be making sort of a kind of argument like "how is my progeny supposed to continue the grand family tradition of going to Rutger's-Camden."

Sort of like when they tried to ban alcohol at Notre Dame tailgates (or somewhere, I wasn't really paying attention) and all the alumni raised an outcry and said "how are my progeny supposed to experience the fullness of the Notre Dame tradition like I did."

Maybe it's like that. Or maybe not. Just guessing. Man I'm bored today.

60 The real seals I know don't start conversations with "as navy seal" in public.

Just found out my Marine bro in law is heading to Afghanistan again to fight, what candidate Obama and the left called "the good war."... This is his third or fourth time there. We aren't sure how many times hes gone, because he never tells anyone when he gets sent off.

Don't know why he doesn't. Maybe all the "fretting" from people gets to him.. maybe other things... probably just everything together.

We all know Obama, after tripling troop strength in Afghanistan is going to abandon it. His primary concern revolves around the election (using his same Iraq priorities/calculations ) is how to pull enough troops home before the election to make his base happy but not pull so many out that it looks like an embarrassing American defeat on his watch.

What an asshat this man and his trolls are.

92 Trust me. If he's announcing he's a SEAL, he wasn't. I used to work with a guy who claimed loudly and proudly to be a SEAL. It was the first thing he told me when I met him. Giving his the benefit of a doubt, I asked a couple of questions about Little Creek, VA and also his BUDS class number. He fumbled miserably through trying to speak to these basic questions. I listened to his SEAL exploit stories for several years never challenging him again. He applied for another internal job and provide my name for a reference. After the HR person called me, I told him I gave him a glowing reference. He seemed a little anxcious about what I told the HR person. I set his mind to ease by explaining that I told the HR person anyone who has served their country proudly as a Navy SEAL would get nothing but the glowing comments from me. I told him that I really played up what kind of character he had and that his SEAL background naturally made him worthy of the security considerations required for the job he had applied for.

He turned green. He then, sheepishly, told me his real background which, of course, had nothing to do with the SEALS, but a lot to do with a NAVY brig. I never told him any better and I never heard him brag to anyone else about beinga SEAL.

Lefties will bring up their military history because they know that we on the Right have great respect for our military, and they assume that mentioning their service will muzzle our protests (see Kerry, John; Blumenthal, Dick; Murtha; John). What they're too stupid to realize is that it's one thing to respect a person's service, but it's another thing entirely to respect the PERSON. Military folks who put their feet square in their mouth are still idiots, and we still call them on it.

They had a top shot marathon, and I'd never watched the show, so I got back to back episodes all day of that asshole, so that's the impression I was left with.

194 I get the idea of saying "I'm a veteran" when talking about wars and veterans affairs. I don't like how many democrats will instead use it as though it means something about every other issue. 198 "U.S. to Hand Over Afghan Prisons, Including Jail Where Korans Were Burned," by Muhammad Lila for ABC News, March 9:

The U.S. and Afghanistan took a major step forward, signing an agreement that will transfer control of all the country's detention facilities -- including the prison where U.S. troops burned Korans last month -- to Afghan security forces within six months.
The deal, signed in Kabul by Gen. John Allen, head of the International Security Force in Afghanistan, and the country's Minister of Defense Abdul Rahim Wardak calls for the first batch of 500 detainees to be transferred to Afghan authority within 45 days. There are just over 3,000 Afghan detainees in American-run detention facilities throughout the country.

The handover of the prison facilities is an effort to rebuild an increasingly strained relationship between the U.S. and Afghanistan.

"This MOU (Memorandum of Understanding) illustrates our commitment to Afghan sovereignty," said U.S. Ambassador Ryan Crocker.

199 I suspect that Rutgers can't afford or doesn't NEED three campuses, so it just makes sense to mergethis campus with Rowan. The Franklin Pierce Law Center up here in NH recently merged with UNH. UNH gets a law school out of the deal, and Franklin Pierce gets a higher profile and access to greater resources. Win/win.

Rowan used to be Glassboro State University and was the site of a Cold War summit between Soviet Premier Alexei Kosygin and President Lyndon "Bag Ears" Johnson in 1967. So it's got that going for it.

On the other hand, so long as the school name ends in "Camden", it doesn't amount to a hill of beans what the preceeding name is. Camden: Becoming the A$$hole of The World Would Be A Step Up For Us!

220 Rutgers New Brunswick actually has 5 campuses. When I taught a summer class as a TA, it took me 30 minutes to DRIVE from my office to the classroom.

Yes, Rutgers IS New Brunswick, but the whole Rutgers system and the Rutgers name has been in flux for a long time. For instance, the UMDNJ (the med school) has changed names at least 3 times in the last 15 years, I think. At first they want to be associated with Rutgers, then they don't, then they do.

The Newark and Camden campuses suffer the indignity of having law schools, but otherwise, they are really community colleges. Come to think of it, I don't know why they don't just call Rowan by the name Rutgers-Camden instead of the other way around.

And, yes, the whole thing is about having Rutgers on your diploma. That's why Kearney State in Nebraska became UN-Kearney.

I wanted to bring something to my vet's office because they could not have been nicer or more concerned about me when I had to have my doggeh put to sleep. Hugs, phone calls, multiple sympathy cards with hand written notes from the vets, etc.

Muts are genetically superior for the most part. Vets should like those as they are generally healthier. I've got two pure breeds, but they are rescues and I don't know anyone well informed on dog health who actually looks down on muts. Get a better vet.

386 I agree, Sarah. It's possible he was a SEAL for a short time, I guess. I don't want to claim he's a fraud without some kind of evidence. Whether he was or not, it's unseemly to throw that card out there in irrelevant situations to justify acting like a punk.

Meh. Fair enough. I knew lots of people that joined with the GI Bill/College Fund as a major reason. As long as they did their job, no problem, thanks for serving, good luck.

Kos is an asshole, but not because his reason for joining up wasn't sufficiently patriotic for me.

Yeah, that's a good point too.

A lot of people use the military as a way to work hard and better themselves. Maybe they weren't perfect when they joined, but they were willing to work and serve their country. So long as they did so honorably, they deserve respect.

Markos is an asshole anyway, for his behavior later on, such as his 'I feel nothing' comment about Americans murdered and their corpses mutilated in Iraq.

401 Alright, enough with the fat jokes or I'll squeeze through this blog and sit on ya.

Some Camden fun facts.
Although once a thriving center for manufacturing and industry, Camden
is perhaps best known for its struggles with urban dysfunction. Three
Camden mayors have been jailed for corruption, the most recent being MiltonMilan in 2000. Since 2005 the school and police have been operated by the NJ the takeover will expire in 2012. In 2008, Camden had the highest crime rate in the U.S. with 2,333 violent crimes per 100,000 people while the national average was 455 per 100,000. Camden public schools spend $17,000 per student per year and two thirds
of the students graduate. Two out of every five residents are below the
national poverty line.

403 Well, now that I know he's a SEAL, I do appreciate his service to our country. That's awesome and hard work.

But that's got nothing to do with the university being named something he doesn't think is prestigious enough. And it's not a license to be a dick.

Posted by: Dustin at March 09, 2012 06:16 PM (wcT+8)

404 The law student appears to be a former SEAL. After serving his country, he went back to Iraq to do a charity run for "peace" and has also run for office as a Democrat at the state level in NJ. Made an annoyingpointless attention-grabbing crybaby speech about a necessary budget cut.
Long story short: former SEALnow thekind of seal that claps on command and balances balls on its nose.

405 Christie is growing. He needs to diet.

Posted by: jeff at March 09, 2012 07:10 PM (Zjb1B)

406 A couple of points to consider in this whole drama.

1. One of the big issues in this merger is that they never really consulted anyone at Rutgers-Camden to see if they wanted the merger. It was just announced and everyone was told that this is what the government wanted, so their own opinion does not matter.

2. Such mergers in the past never created the hoped for cost savings, but instead just caused more expenses because of the massive merger costs and increased bureaucracy.

408 "I've heard from army sf guys that seals are prissy whiners

Posted by: Matt"

I've only met one SEAL in my life, but he was not prissy and he was not a whiner. Not even close. Very friendly and down to earth, and I get the impression he wouldn't complain even if his own life was at risk.

SF guys have the credibility to talk smack about SEALs, and more power to them. That kind of competitive spirit is healthy. But just because this student was a prick doesn't mean his service wasn't heroic or at least honorable.

Posted by: Dustin at March 10, 2012 11:43 AM (wcT+8)

409 For my own view, the status of being a vet (before we even get to the SEAL bit) in fact does give you a little more license than others--the phrase that comes to mind is "and hold their man hoods cheap whilst any speaks". Even if that extra license is mildly abused. Because someone has to go out there and do the tough jobs, and most Americans can't be bothered.

That license does not seem to have been honored much here, or by Christie. Which to me shows "appreciation for service" really is nothing but a bunch of shallow hokum that falls apart the first minute it actually involves someone not getting what they want.

Now, from Ace, I expect nothing else when it comes to matters of character, but the fact is that he challenged the man's integrity and was wrong, dead wrong. He needs to apologize for that part. As far as respecting a veteran when it actually matters--when you disagree with him, perhaps seriously--Ace in my opinion does not and never will have the character required. I leave it up to the rest to determine where they lay on that axis.
