Karma Fisker Dies in Consumer Reports Testing

Whatever Midas had? Yeah, Obama has something different.

A $100,000-plus Fisker Automotive luxury car died during Consumer Reports speed testing for reasons that are still unknown, leaving the struggling electric car startup with another blow to its image.

"It is a little disconcerting that you pay that amount of money for a car and it lasts basically 180 miles before going wrong," David Champion, senior director for the magazine's automotive test center, told Reuters.

...

The breakdown of the Consumer Reports car is more bad news for a company that already recalled some Karmas. Fisker also has changed its CEO and halted production over the past month as it seeks to renegotiate the terms of a $529 million loan from the U.S. Department of Energy.

And when asked if he owned a Chevy Volt, Energy Secretary Steven Chu said he didn't even own a car. At the moment.

This administration seems to have a very theoretical connection with reality.

If you've ever wondered what Government By Hippies might look like, now you know.

Electric cars when out of juice turn into a fluking "brick". It's called "bricking". Can't even tow the sucker - wheels lock up.

If your stuck with a "brick" only thing left to do is get a mouse named Ignatz and a Krazy Kat. At least it would be good for something.

314 The drunken libtard douchebag I sat next to at a bar at dinner last night, getting in my face and going off on Rush wouldn't even answer my calm questions about conservative women being called "c*nt" and "tw*t". Which is why I came home and took an Ambien of my husband's and may have posted stupid/embarrassing stuff last night.

The teacher is a little perturbed now, her face slightly red. She asks the girl why she is a Cardinals fan.
“Well, My Dad and Mom are Cardinals fans, and I’m a Cardinals fan too.”
The teacher is now angry. “That’s no reason,” she says loudly. “What if your Mom was a moron, and your dad was a moron. What would you be then?”
A pause, and a smile. “Then,” says the girl, “I’d be a Cubs fan.”

363 Whoops, posted this in the next thread down, took me a while to type it in so reposting here:

Double apologies folks, I wasn't able to hang around much last night and
read any additional commentary - Have a killer cold at the moment so
was trying to get as much sleep as I could. Feel a bit better, but the
second apology of course is for getting home so late to post the update.

Tonight's Episode, unfortunately, well have to be titled Revenge of the
Turds. The morning was pretty uneventful, but at lunch time Che, the
che-ettes and about 5 others came up while I was eating.

I'm guessing either Che and the others either figures he's in the "safe
zone" since his supervisor was canned but he didn't, or he figures he's
going to get canned eventually so it just doesn't matter anymore. I'm
guessing it's probably the former, the kid strikes me as being a
blithering idiot.

So he saunters up to my table flanked by the usual duo of slack eyed
idgits and of course 5 others who are part of his usual lunchtime
crowd. He smiles at me and informs me, "You know, were passing around a
petition for people to sign. Were going to get you fired."

I looked up at him, and smiled back. "You know, it would probably be a
lot easier if you just circulated a petition that got you named Queen of
France. Once you become Queen, you could call the CEO and demand he
fire me. And of course once that's finished you and all your peons
could go out and have free cake."

Well, Che-boy stared at me for a moment or two, and lacking anything
clever to say they all stomped off. I doubt they got the obvious
historical reference, in fact I doubt they even understood that their
petition had about as much chance of getting me fired as it did in
getting him named Queen of France. As usual they just didn't get the
response they were expecting, at all, and as a result it pretty much
blew all of their rather limited little circuitry.

The rest of the day pretty much passed by without incident, until it was
time to leave and I headed to my car with my bodyguard in tow. You
might remember my bodyguard - the guy that's been walking me to my car
for the last couple of days. I've been calling him Barney Fief -
because he sort of reminded me of the character from the Andy Griffith
show, at least physically. He's about 5'2, weighs maybe 135 soaking
wet, and can't have been shaving for more than maybe a year or two. I'm
guessing he's somewhere in his early twenties, at most.

Well I can't really call him Barney Fief anymore, it just doesn't fit.
He walks me out to my car, and sure enough, it's been trashed. Somebody
has scratched obscenities in the hood, on the doors, and on the trunk.
On closer inspection there is a switchblade sticking out of one of the
rear tires.

Apparently the idiot(s) didn't realize that like most cars, the one I
drove to work was riding on steel belted radials. Rather than trying to
slash through the sidewalls, they tried jamming the blade into the back
of the tire where the tread is - and the blade got caught in the steel
belt. Apparently they couldn't get it back out again and left it
there.

So my bodyguard sees this - and first he just stood there, staring at
the car. Then the strangest look came over his face. If I had to
describe it, I'd call it rage. It was weird. I swear as God as my
witness, he stood there and started to shake. As for me, sure, I was
annoyed. Seeing the blade still stuck in my tire was kind of amusing as
well, I mean to think that these dipsticks couldn't even slash a tire
by themselves, well it struck me as kind of funny.

But not the security guard formerly known as Barney Fief - he took it
personally. Very personally - much more so than I could imagine since
it wasn't even his car. He looks up and me, locks eyes and says - "Sir,
I'm sorry. This is my fault. I promise you, I will find the people
responsible for this and make sure they get whats coming to them."

Ok, couple of things that really made this stick for me - one, he made
direct eye contact, never wavered. By the look on his face and the
sound of his voice I knew that for whatever reason, he felt personally
responsible for this incident. He also used the word I - and when he
said it, he really meant it. I really can't say what prompted it - I
mean it's not like they assigned this kid or anybody really to look
after my car.

But for whatever reason he stepped up and took ownership of the whole
thing. Normally of course in a situation like this people feel
compelled to tell a guy, "Hey, it's not your fault.. " etc.. But
somehow that just didn't feel right. For whatever reason he felt like
he owned this - he wanted to own it. I knew right then and there I
couldn't talk him out of it or say anything that was going to make him
feel like he didn't, and somehow if I'd tried it would have made it
worse.

So instead, I just nodded, opened the trunk and took out one of the two
spares I had and the trusty floor jack I always carry with me. While I
getting the stuff out of the trunk he called the cops, then he helped me
change the tire, making absolutely certain that neither of us came
anywhere near touching the switchblade.

We had the tire changed and were waiting for the cops to arrive, the kid
- no strike that, the young man was still fuming. I can't really call
him a kid, despite his age, it just doesn't fit. I looked at him and
figured he could use a little cheering up, so I said something I thought
would do the trick. "I'm really glad you were here tonight. It's good
to know a good man has my back."

I was right, he brightened up almost immediately. "I figured you'd have
asked for one of the other guards by now.. you know, somebody bigger."

I just smiled. "Nope. It's like my grandpappy used to say, it's not
the size of a dog in a fight that matters, it's the size of the fight in
the dog. From the first time I saw you I figured you for somebody that
had a lot of fight in you. So no, there's nobody I can think of that
I'd rather have watching my back." - ok God's honest truth is I really
didn't care because I never figured any of the loon squad would have the
guts to do anything face to face anyway, but the young man needed a
little confidence builder, and by goodness he had earned it as far as I
was concerned.

So we waited for a bit longer, the cops finally showed and we filed a
report. The officer took the switchblade, tire and all, as evidence -
lol. Makes me wonder just what sort of weird stuff one might see in a
police evidence locker.

It also occurred to me that the encounter in the lunchroom made a little
more sense. Not that I have any doubts that the loon squad honestly
believes they can get me fired with a petition, but in retrospect it
occurred to me that most likely they were there to establish an alibi,
since they knew they'd be at the top of the suspect list.

So after the police left I thanked the young man again, shook his hand,
and headed home to file my nightly update, but not before stopping off
at an autoparts store and picking up some touch-up paint. Haven't had a
chance to deal with the scratches just yet, but the guy at the
autoparts store sure got a surprise when I asked him to take a look at
my car and give me his best guess as to how much touch-up paint it would
take to cover the damage.

He came out, looked it over, and said, "Damn, Ex-Girlfriend?" I shook
my head and said, "Nope, long story. It starts with a T-Shirt." He
looked at me quizzically and I just shook my head. "Trust me, don't
ask."

They are escalating. I did not get to read your update from last night so maybe you called them law enforcement in before this - not sure. But at least now they are involved and there is a case opened on this. I know you were minimizing the risk of a physical assault before, but this latest thing is scary.

Thank God the knife was stuck only in your tire. Please please be careful.

Posted by: mama winger at March 08, 2012 10:01 PM (P6QsQ)

376 "Are there security cameras in the lot?"

Sadly no, no cameras out there at all - and I work a shift that starts at 9, so by the time I get there pretty much all the spots near the building are gone. But on the upside the car I drive to work is a POS - I got my money worth out of it a long, long time ago and I'm just driving it till it finally dies. The police have the "evidence", I'm guessing they'll run prints and if whoever did it has a record or is in the system they'll get busted, otherwise I doubt much will come of it.

Desperately need a new nickname for my bodyguard though - the guy has way too much going on to be called Barney anymore. Almost feel a little guilty about calling him that in the first place really.

I like the sound of that young man.

381 Desperately need a new nickname for my bodyguard
though - the guy has way too much going on to be called Barney anymore.
Almost feel a little guilty about calling him that in the first place
really.

384 SoS, the more these punks push it like they did today (public scene, vandalism), the more folks who will take it personally, like your security guy. Doesn't your butt kicker come back tomorrow? Be nice to have a police report to kick off her day.

385 SOS,

Now that your employer knows they have a potential assault or homicide attempt on their premises in their future, and employees who are proactively harassing you with some pretty direct confrontations, do you think they might make an accommodation for your parking arrangements for a while? I don't like the sounds of where this is going and going fast. Disgruntled employees, and they are inviting the company to disgruntle them, are a real threat.

Posted by: AnonymousDrivel at March 08, 2012 10:10 PM (eHIJJ)

386 Sorry, afterthought to my previous comment.

Bear in mind that there's absolutely nothing you can say to Che that will improve your position. Nothing. The best you can do is break even; it goes downhill from there. So say nothing whatever to the asshole. Zip.Nada. Zilch. Nichts. Nichevo. Any points you score will have a zero coefficient in front of them, any booboos will have 10^100 coefficient in front of them.

They might, I have a meeting in the morning with the Managing Director, she's back in town and scheduled the meeting for the AM so I'll inquire about it with her then, my guess is she'll probably already know about the incident before I arrive since my bodyguard reported it to security already as well as the police.

Sadly though he has the day off tomorrow (my bodyguard, I mean). He works Sunday through Thursday - we were talking about it tonight. He's been trying to get a Monday thru Friday gig for a while now but he's still new enough that he just doesn't have anywhere near enough seniority, I guess the Monday thru Friday shifts are at a real premium at his company. Our site actually uses an outside, bonded firm for security.

I hope the cops have reserved a large evidence locker for you, SOS. You're adding to the pile daily.

390 "Bear in mind that there's absolutely nothing you can say to Che that will improve your position."

Not worried about improving my position. But I'm also not going to let this little pantywaist get in my face and talk smack either. I could care less what Che-boy thinks about me, or what he or his little friends have to say.

I'm not afraid of them, and they will be made aware that I feel no fear of them whatsoever. That is more or less the point of this whole exercise. I'm not backing up, or backing down from them. Not now, not ever. They can trash my monitor, my car, whatever. I could care less.

They don't gain one inch of ground. Period. If I let them talk that way to me in the lunch room and said nothing? Well, then everyone - them included, would assume that their bullshit intimidation tactics were working.

So you'll forgive me for being blunt here, but not just no, fuck no.

Perhaps the kindest thing anyone has ever said to me, but no - not even a pale imitation. Andrew took on the whole world - me, I'm just trying to maybe help clean up my little corner of it a bit.

397 SoS, Sorry to hear about your car, even if it is a beater. You are getting a lot of good advice and, with or without the advice, are doing great! Very proud of you as a fellow moron. You might just ask the MD if she thinks a switchblade knife sticking out of your tire could be use on you and if it could have been done by one of the folks making the death threats. Also, time to ID Che and his buddies to the MD so they can take action. As with Ogabe, they need to go.

Thanks for the update!

Buford Jr.?
When it's all said and done with, you can take him an ax handle to carry around, yanno, as a kind of a thank you.

Did the cops not do anything other than take the report, and the tire with embedded knife?

Posted by: jem at March 08, 2012 10:41 PM (0oYHO)

400 But I'm also not going to let this little pantywaist get in my face and talk smack either.

He's irrelevant. Let him talk himself out into the parking lot with a cardboard box.

391 Jay Guevara: "Disengage"
Fuck that. Andrew would not have disengaged. SOS is Breitbart.

You misunderstood me. I don't mean to back down, but just not to waste time bandying words with Che, and potentially blurting out something that can be used against SoS. He's in a winning position now, and has nothing to gain by verbal exchanges with Che. Stay frosty.

To put it another way, SoS is ahead on every referee's card, while Che is swinging wildly hoping for a knockout.

Posted by: Jay Guevara at March 08, 2012 11:03 PM (EeVhV)

401 Disengaging means being cowed. SoS, AB, BoN, PBuh, needs to act as normally as possible, and not let these scum make him change his behavior. They have numbers on their side, but he has the law and the facts and Balls of Neutronium.

404 SoS, if have a game camera, set it up to watch your house. Some police dept. lend them out as part of community policing. Ask your lawyer, but a small tape recorder might not be a bad idea.

408 I have a friend who was born in Saudi Arabia and grew up there in the American ARAMCO compound. He said the Saudis in the 60's and early 70's didn't really understand cars and would drive a new Mercedes off the lot with a full tank, then abandon them in the desert when they ran dry, then go buy another one because they didn't realize you needed to put gas in them.

Sounds like those auto-newbie Saudis got about the same miles per dollar invested as a Karma buyer.

That sucks for Consumer Reports. They buy review items off-the-shelf, so they will get something a typical consumer gets, instead of a potentially tweaked and tuned item that may not be representative of what we can buy.
