Buck Up Lil Campers - The GOP Is Not Doomed in 2012

I know that DOOM and hemlock mojitos are the trendy drinks these days around the HQ, but there are some good reasons to believe the fundamentals favor the GOP candidate this election.

Indeed, this is why I prefer simpler models that Teixeira conveniently avoids.  The "Bread and Peace" model from Douglas Hibbs uses only two variables (real disposable personal income per capita and military fatalities in unprovoked wars).  That model's results last month were not encouraging for Obama, even if you modify the model to give him credit as the incumbent.  Since then, real disposable income has fallen.

Among newer models, there is the "Nowcast," from professors Charles Tien of and Michael Lewis-Beck, who have done a fair amount of work in this area.  The Nowcast is based largely on the National Business Index (NBI), which the authors define as the percentage of respondents who say "business conditions are better" minus the percentage of respondents who say "business conditions are worse," as measured in the national University of Michigan Survey of Consumers.  This NBI, measured in April six months before the November election, correlates highly with incumbent vote share since 1980.  The most recent Nowcast (.pdf) - just one month from April - has Obama at 47.4%, which not only projects an Obama loss but one outside the average overall model error of 2.2%.

And this is taking into account the standard GOP stupidity and fuckuppery. So we have that going for us.

But hey if you just enjoy the tangy taste of hemlock and and the warm buzz of a KCN chaser, don't let me spoil all the fun.

Zombie: The Million Breitbart Project

A good father goes fishing and feeds his sons every night. A great father teaches his sons how to fish so they can feed themselves.

A good muckraking investigative journo-activist breaks shocking stories that change the political landscape. A great muckraking investigative journo-activist - like Andrew Breitbart - shows us that anybody can do what he does.

Because that's the secret of Andrew Breitbart's career: He rose to the top despite not possessing any unique skills.

One thing we must learn from Andrew's life: If Breitbart could do it, anyone could do it. We no longer have any excuse. America's bloggers and citizen-journalists and new-media mavens need to get off our collective asses and make news happen.

Every day, you need to ask yourself: What Would Breitbart Do?

And then do it.

Otzi the Iceman Had Brown Eyes, Lyme Disease

The 5,300-year-old 'ice mummy' known as Otzi suffered from the world's first-known case of Lyme disease, a bacterial parasite spread by ticks, according to new DNA analysis.

Otzi, who was 46 at the time of his death and measured 5ft2, also had brown eyes, had relatives in Sardinia, and was lactose intolerant. Otzi was also predisposed to heart disease.

It was hard out there for a 46 year old cave-dwelling pimp-daddy.

Adam Sandler Gets 11 Razzies

Holy crap 11 razzies in the same year - that's got to be a new record.

Topping the list-the complete version of which you can see here-were Sandler's performances in Just Go With It and especially Jack And Jill, which scored him nods for both Worst Actor and Worst Actress (where he'll compete against Sarah Palin playing a fantasy version of herself in the documentary The Undefeated). Furthermore, all possible permutations of his screen pairings in both of those movies were nominated for Worst Screen Couple, the specificity of which somehow seems even more cutting than his closest competitor, "Nicolas Cage And Anyone Sharing The Screen With Him In Any Of His Three 2011 Movies."

Anyway, these nominations, when combined with his producing work on Bucky Larson: Born To Be A Star, contributed to Sandler easily besting Eddie Murphy's five nominations for Norbit in 2007, and making Adam Sandler the most Razz-ed star of all time.

I like Adam Sandler and usually even his lesser movies have at least a few good scenes but maybe it's time for him for him to take a timeout and focus on making just one decent movie a year.

Gingers Don't Feel Pain

Okay the story says they feel pain 'differently' but I think we can all read between the lines here.

Professor Lars Arendt-Nielsen, one of the researchers, said: 'Our tests showed that redheads are less sensitive to this particular type of pain.

'They react less to pressure close to the injected area, or to a pinprick. They seem to be a bit better protected, and that is a really interesting finding.'

In recent years, research has suggested that redheaded women experience pain in a different way to their brown and blonde counterparts.

Hmm don't feel pain and lack souls but otherwise can fully simulate a human - I think we've found the next generation of test dummies here.

66 Costner is good when he sticks to sports movies.
And No Way Out was good.

Sandler is funny. Happy Gilmore was genius.
Sandler's problem is his humor is juvenile, but he's now middle-aged. So he doesn't understand juvenile humor anymore. Now he's a middle-aged guy doing gags he imagines will be funny to young people.

When he was young he just did stuff that was funny to him, which worked. Movies are made for people under 30.

If you compare him to other actors, Sandler has a remarkable string of success -- ie $100 million plus at the box office.

Also Sandler is widely rumored to be right-wing-ish.

210 Look at Sandler's Box Office. He makes money, that's the only reason they keep funding his movies.

There's almost nobody who had a better track record from 1995-2010. 15 solid years of putting out successful movies.

BoxOfficeMojo data.
Sandler has made 25 movies that have grossed over $2 Billion (just US). His movies avg $81m domestic over his career.

Total gross is #34 all time (non-inflation adjusted).

#1 is Tom Hanks ($4B,100M avg)

And Sandler hasn't been in big summer blockbusters. Comedies typically gross less, but cost less to produce.

Jack and Jill cost $80M and has made $140M worldwide.

I haven't seen it and it sounds horrible -- but it made money.

225 And Sandler's name means his comedies generate revenue overseas. Comedies historically do very poorly at foreign box offices. Comedy is hard to translate.

A famous name means foreign exhibitors will pony up for rights to screen a US comedy

Very often the early breakout comedies of a star make no money at all overseas, cause he's not famous yet. Overseas boxoffice can't really spread by word of mouth.

Nope. Kurt Russell is
the ultimate Wyatt Earp and Tombstone has the best Earp brothers ever.
Plus, Powers Boothe as Curly Bill and Michael Biehn as Johnny Ringo.
Even Val Kilmer was good in it.

380 >>Thought AoS readers also might like to know, the classic Vietnam flick The Deer Hunter was finally officially issued on Blu-Ray today:

Did you know that it was based on a book about Russian roulette in Las Vegas? I can't remember the name of the book, but it was a fictional story about an extreme gambler.

Hollywood just added the Vietnam aspect because they wanted to make a political statement of sorts.

So the entire premise of the film was Russian Roulette and they kinda branched out from there.

Best review of a book evah!

I'll be honest. I was completely blown away by all the male nudity in this book. I wasn't expecting 20 pages filled with naked pictures of the author in various poses. I found the photos with animals to be in extremely poor taste.

It's not surprising to me that the author, allegedly, isn't allowed within 200 yards of a playground or school.

432 Here was CAC's review:

Let me start off by saying the title really threw me a curve ball.
Usually, Matt rambles incoherently about matters he knows very, very
little about, much like a three year old trying to describe the workings
of a black hole. So it was a surprise that Matt pulled a
bait-and-switch, titling his latest work along the lines of his previous
pseudo-intellectual tripe and giving us this fascinating read on so
controversial a subject. I would never have guessed from his previous
work and ramblings that Matt is an amateur anthropologist, and perhaps
he should stick with it as works like this make for a fascinating read.
The entire work, beginning to end, is the result of years of studying
sasquatches in the wild. I won't use this space to argue for or against
their existence, rest assured Matt is quite certain of that. Rather than
provide a typical study of footprints or another boring analysis of the
Patterson footage, Matt chose the interesting topic of sasquatch sex.
Page after page reveals fascinating details, along with dozens of
illustrations hand-drawn by Matt of the reproductive anatomy. Though
some of the descriptions perhaps reveal a bit too much (Matt describes
the organ of the male as "surprisingly painful, yet satisfying"), I
could not put it down. I was sucked in. Everything from the elaborate
ritual oral behaviors to primitive birth control methods (again, perhaps
a bit too revealing, Matt described one birth control method as
"slightly less painful than the intercourse itself, with migrane
headaches persisting several hours after douching") was just incredibly
insightful. I can't shake the feeling that Matt holds a deep, personal
connection to these creatures. He talks about the male he studied in a
manner more like a teenager describing their first crush, but perhaps
that is how he managed to get so close to so controversial a beast.
Opening ones self up to such legends seems to have paid off tenfold. I
look forward to any followup.

I dont see Santorum or Newt as the answer. I just dont. They have spent their whole lives in DC. They havent run anything.

For me, Romney is the smarter choice to avoid/slow down the doom. He is a business man.. he understands doom when he see's it.

First, take a good look at housing prices in whatever part of CA you're getting the interest from. Then do the math. If it works out in your favor, it might be worth it. Best to stash all the cash you can while you're here, though, so you can bounce back to TX flush when you're ready.

I hate to tell you but this is why we are so jacked up and on the verge of collapse. The GOP made Electability the CW in 1964 and look where it's gotten us. The voting population continues to shrink as the GOP hunts for the elusive Independents.

I don't think Romney will slow anything down because we're already past the point where any shock will tip the scales. We needed to continue from 2008 and create a Party, a platform, of stark reform, and elect a string of candidates that would enact it.

We totally failed.

477 Greetings Folks!

Big doings at the Circle K today, much of it falling into the Holy Crap category. Just got back from dinner with my supervisor and her husband, great people - but I won't bore you with the gory details and jump right in with both feet.

I guess today's episode would have to be called Work Wars - the Managing Director Strike's Back. When I arrived at work this morning, I got to the floor and signed in, checking my email as I do every morning.

There is an email in there - not to the entire group, but facility wide. It's from the Managing Director. She is on a serious tear, telling everyone that the HR policy on what constitutes a credible threat is any threat made by anyone against a fellow employee.

She apologies about the "delayed" response from HR and assures us all that the matter will be fully investigated and "decisive" action will be taken. She quotes all of the various HR policies on the subject and states quite firmly that this sort of behavior will not be condoned.

Ok, so next email I have is from her, she apologies to me for HR's lack of response. She explains that she is not on site (she's actually doing this from another city, she's at a conference of some sort) but that she'll be returning later in the week and asks me if I can schedule a meeting with her when she returns.

She tells me that if I have any problems I should report them to my supervisor and a specific person in HR - the person she lists is not the director. She also asks if I could take the printout's I had of the death threats I received in my home email to this person in HR, as she would like proper documentation and a paper trail. She assures me that the work emails I got in my work email box are already being investigated.

She closes with a little blurb about how she knows she can count on me to be "discreet" until we get a chance to meet and discuss this face to face and thanks me for the "restraint" I've shown regarding this situation to date.

Ok, as I'm wading through all this, I catch site of a security guard wandering through the production floor with a cardboard box full of crap. My supervisor comes over when she see's me and asks me if I got my email, I told her I did - asked her about the guard.

Turns out the box contained all of the stuff from the Che-Tshirt kids Supervisors desk. He's been canned. They wouldn't even let him back on the production floor, the had disabled his badge and security was boxing his crap up for him.

Ok, first big shocker of the day. So I sit down and get some work done, later that morning I grab my small stack of printed emails from home and head down to HR. I get there and drop off the printouts of the threats I got at home, the lady in HR is very nice and thanks me very much. She assures me that the Managing Director has expressed to her the seriousness of all this and that an investigation is already underway. I can't help but notice that the HR Director's door is shut, and the lights are off.

I inquire about the HR Director, the lady just smiles and tells me that she's been placed in charge of handling my case and that from now on if I have any problems at all I should contact her. I try to pry a bit, got nowhere - no idea where the HR Director is or what her fate might be at this stage. I also tried getting some info about the email that went out from HR and too the managing director, I got nothing. She stonewalled better than those folks who have your mail in rebate and have no intention of sending it too you before you retire. So, email at this stage is still a mystery. Judging by the HR ladies reaction she knows what is going on with the HR director but isn't allowed to comment on it, but I very much got the impression she had no clue who sent that email from HR.

So, back to work, then finally to lunch. I get to the lunchroom, as is my new norm I sit alone. I see Che-Boy and the two Che "ettes" with him, but they give me a wide berth. They say nothing to me, in fact they seem extremely reluctant to even make direct eye contact. The lunchroom is quiet as shit, never seen anything quite like it. Plenty of people in there, but nobody wanted to talk, or if they did they were only talking very quietly with their neighbor. A very odd and somewhat disturbing scene, to say the least.

Ok, so I head back to my desk and keep my head down for the rest of the day. The body count so far, Che-Boy's supervisor is now on unemployment. My supervisor and I talked about it at dinner tonight, and she seems to think that he was most likely canned for the email he sent Friday about the meeting with HR.

I tend to agree, it would probably be a bit early in the HR investigation for them to have proved he sent one of the threatening emails, so were both of the opinion that most likely it was the original email that probably cooked his bacon.

We discussed the email that was broadcast to the whole group and the Managing Director, she has no idea where it came from either.

So it's been a real rollercoaster sort of day - still very much in the twilight zone here.

500 A nugget of wisdom from the Steynmeister:

Nevertheless, this distinction shouldn't obscure an important truth — that, in America as in Europe, the mainstream churches were cheerleaders for the rise of their usurper: the Church of Big Government. Instead of the Old World's state church or the New World's separation of church and state, most of the West now believes in the state as church — an all-powerful deity who provides day-care for your babies and takes your aged parents off your hands. America's Catholic hierarchy, in particular, colluded in the redefinition of the tiresome individual obligation to Christian charity as the painless universal guarantee of state welfare. Barack Obama himself provided the neatest distillation of this convenient transformation when he declared, in a TV infomercial a few days before his election, that his "fundamental belief" was that "I am my brother's keeper."
Back in Kenya, his brother lived in a shack on $12 a year. If Barack is his brother's keeper, why can't he shove a sawbuck and a couple singles in an envelope and double the guy's income? Ah, well: When the president claims that "I am my brother's keeper," what he means is that the government should be his brother's keeper. And, for the most part, the Catholic Church agreed. They were gung ho for Obamacare. It never seemed to occur to them that, if you agitate for state health care, the state gets to define what health care is.

. Have you seen a lawyer yet? It would be a good idea to see one and
do a complete dump, even if you decide not to proceed. You need to
protect your rights, and a lawyer is the only way to do it. 6 months
from now, maybe a year, you will be glad you did, or wish you had.

Posted by: Arbalest at March 07, 2012 12:15 AM

By all means, don't think this is settled, I suspect from what the HR said to you indicates that they are trying to make you feel that "this will all be resolved and you don't really need to bring any lawyers into this, do you"

Retain the lawyer, but of course don't litigate unless it becomes necessary, and follow her advice to the letter. Keep a meticulous documentation trail for your lawyer.

The pall of silence in the lunchroom is a bit creepy, and with one or maybe two "kills" scored, assume that you have a bullseye on your back and they have friends who are planning retaliation.

Che-boy and Nail Polish are still around, so this isn't over by any means.

"have the md and the hr director been there for the same amount of time?
is there a chance the md is looking for a chance to make an example of
someone?"

No, the Managing Director has been at our location for about 5 or 6 years now, the HR Director has only been there for a few months, she transferred from another facility. According to her bio (ya, I did some research today) her background wasn't in HR but in management.

I think if the Managing Director was going to "make an example" of her then they would have announced that the HR twit was canned, as it is no mention of it at all. So it's possible she did get canned, but if so they are not making a huge hairy public deal of it, at least not yet.

597 SoS's success at using the smug, petulant Left's obsession with "making sure everyone is going thru life un-offended" against them via HR is epic. THIS is how we win. They set up systems to prevent offense everywhere, and i find those systems offensive. They must be exposed or at least finally turned into a two-way street. Playing fair and hoping for people's better angels is not an option this year.

From now on everything they do MUST have a price, even if it's just nipping at their heels and annoying them. They have been unfettered for years. They need to feel the paranoia and fear of having their free ride of unquestioned bullying come to an end. Yglesias wants to talk shit about Breitbart, he gets hammered with bad reviews for his $4 ebook.

I suspect what motivated Rush to say what he did was that, here was a 30-year old woman un-ashamed and emboldened to demand birth control coverage at a Catholic University. Not at all embarrassed at asking for free things. Not at all bothered by her being used by the Dems at a show hearing. Not at all shy or discreet about what entitlements she wanted to insist upon. You can't reason with people like that, they are incapable.

So Rush, sensing this, tried to embarrass her by saying "Aren't you even worried about how this LOOKS for you? Aren't you concerned that having your hand out for birth control at a $45k.yr college might be a bit much?". But he used different words, going too far. He should have warned that "One might think poorly of your habits and assume you are of loose morals, coming up here and saying you and your mystery friends need $1k a year in birth control". Instead, he actually called her a slut. But his point is valid.

Now my cynicism of the corporate culture kicks in. Every organization has to prove to the bean counters that they're worth keeping. One criteria they look at when it comes to downsizing, moving, reorganizing, or eliminating is the morale of the place. I've seen it many times

SOS did good, *and* got lucky.

This was close to a "best possible" outcome as far as stopping bullying (that's what it really was), and it's not over yet.

With bully management, like in a lefty union shop or a government/school office, or in journalism, it would be a lot harder.

Yeah, this scenario needs to happen ten thousand more times - but that doesn't begin to solve the public sector problem.

I also think that AB and the moron horde would not hesitate to make the same pledge publicly because they probably have already made it internally.

Then I got to explain to her that this person's identity was so wrapped up in his politics that he probably couldn't see that very simple way of handling the situation.

1. he will appoint so many Mormons and they will hire so many mormons into the beauracracy they will never be fluched out.
Eisenhower had a Mormon cabenette member and his mormon hires are still in the cogs of the beauracracy

2. mormons have a huge religious chip on their shoulder over the mormon wars, they will not confront islam head on

680 SOS if you're still reading, consider telling the director when you meet, "What can I do to help improve morale after this unfortunate incident? I see people not talking to each other (and honestly me) and that's the opposite of what I want."

Or words to that effect. Figure out what they want (improved morale at this point is obvious), and ask them what you can do to help *them*.

In my experience when a non-management employee recognizes management concerns, the management gets giddy and does happy dances.

I was an IT person who understood business 101, so I was like a golden boy to management, despite a background not as strong as some others.

737 Here are the rules for people who do not know:

You do not identify the deceased until the official press release comes out. It does not matter how many other people have violated the rules. It doesn't matter if you know the wife has been notified. Give the family a chance to make their own notifications.

This is how we honor the dead and respect their loved ones. Godspeed.

Whether or not it works that way at Fallon, it's a valid concern. In some of the information, it seems to indicate that the base is near Reno, while the family is near San Diego. Being a civilian employee, his family might not be that thoroughly plugged-into the military grapevine. I don't know one way or the other.....all I know is that we lost a plane with one of our team in it.

You have no proof of that. The only organization that likes to recruit out of BYU are the intelligence community, state, & law enforcement due to the fact most graduates knows more than 1 language than your average redneck in the country.

President Benson who was Eisenhower's cabinet member for the Department of Agriculture. I'm not sure how that's such a big deal to you. Especially when Benson was a strong opponent of communism contrary to Obama's Marxist views which we all oppose here as well.

748 sonofabitch.

Fair winds and following seas Captain. Saw the news first over at McThag's place, didn't want to believe it, still don't.

Oh! I have slipped the surly bonds of Earth
And
danced the skies on laughter-silvered wings;

Sunward I’ve climbed and joined the tumbling mirth of sun-split
clouds, – and done a hundred things

You have not dreamed of wheeled and soared and swung

High in the sunlit silence. Hov’ring there,

I’ve chased the shouting wind along, and flung

My eager craft through footless falls of air...

Up, up the long, delirious, burning blue

I’ve topped the wind-swept heights with easy grace

Where never lark, nor eer eagle flew –

And, while with silent lifting mind I’ve trod

The high, untrespassed sanctity of space,

Put out my hand and touched the face of God.

I suspect this might be a long election year. Starting to hear some liberal leanings from friends on Facebook. /sigh California.

Specifically, a friend scoffed that Santorum is dumb because he linked welfare with breeding criminals. Her solution is to "solve poverty" first.

Me noting that poverty is fundamentally unsolvable yielded a dogpile of responses about not caring for the poor.

A few weeks earlier, same friend posted that Jon Stewart and whatshisname were better informed than our actual politicians, and would do a better job of running things. Heh.

762 The guy behind bebreitbart.com emailed me back and said that he'll respect StuckOnStupid's wishes and won't post anything about this story on his site, so StuckOnStupid (and Merovign) can breathe easy. As can I -- I would have hated to get SoS in trouble by jumping the gun on announcing this story to the world.

I still think it's a great story that should be more widely shared, but I'll let SoS be the one to make that decision. (As I should have done in the first place.) StuckOnStupid, if you ever decide that you're OK with sharing the story of the Che T-shirt, email happywarrior@bebreitbart.com and let him know that you're OK with it being posted. As for me, I'm going to shut up about it now.

767 Damnation, I wish I were bron a Cossack!

"

Zaporozhian Cossacks to the Turkish Sultan!

Thou art a turkish imp, the damned devil's brother and friend, and a
secretary to Lucifer himself. What the devil kind of knight art thou
that cannot slay a hedgehog with your naked ass? The devil shits, and
your army eats. Thou son of a bitch wilt not ever make subjects of
Christian sons; we have no fear of your army, by land and by sea we will
battle with thee, fuck thy mother.

Thou art the Babylonian scullion, Macedonian wheelwright, brewer of
Jerusalem, goat-fucker of Alexandria, swineherd of Greater and Lesser
Egypt, Armenian pig, Podolian villain, catamite of Tartary, hangman of Kamyanets,
and fool of all the world and underworld, a fool before our God, a
grandson of the Serpent, and the crick in our dick. Pig's snout, mare's
arse, slaughterhouse cur, unchristened brow, screw thine own mother!

So the Zaporozhians declare, you lowlife. Thou wilt not even be
herding Christian pigs. Now we shall conclude, for we don't know the
date and don't have a calendar; the moon's in the sky, the year in the
book, the day's the same over here as it is over there; for this kiss
our ass!

Nice Cooth,, and I like the cossacks diplomatic endevors, sounds like an exciting trip.

Posted by: beanervt at March 07, 2012 05:33 AM (KZLoo)

771 One of the many, many things I enjoy about this painting is the guy in the middle with the quill pen.

The word "clerk" is actually derived from "cleric" -- or member of the "clergy", meaning those who have had formal religious training. This was the only way of learning how to read and write at various times, and became a shortcut way of referring to someone who kept records. In other places and times, the function linked to "scribe", which focused more on the act of writing itself.

Anyway, the thing about this particular guy is that he's just barely holding it together as he writes this stuff down. He can't "officially" laugh -- he's a priest, a man of God -- but the text ain't gonna fuck the sultan's mother without him, IYKWIMAITYD.

792 People were talking about 'winning by losing' with the nomination of another RINO, war hero Sen. McCain. In another rhetorical ploy inspired by the mescaline left, here we have the 'lose by winning' argument. So someone with an 'R' wins politically, and then proceeds to do exactly what the pre-childporn-Marxist (HI/close to Asia where life is really cheap)/Democrats would do: socialize medicine, grow government, restrict our precious 2nd-Amendment rights, grant amnesty to illegals, hey-let's-all-just-get-along-with-Sharia'-they-vote,-too.But it's an 'R', and they can spend our money/draft us for their crusades/and tell us to shut-up when we come out of our backwoods bay. Where real life is. (I can hear my ol' hounddog barkin'... got a statue of him up on the wall of le maison, mon frere).
