| Some Movies Were Nominated For Some Industry Awards And It's The Most Important Thing Ever Or SomethingHere are the nominations. I didn't see any of the Best Picture nominees, except for Thor. Made you look. No the only one I saw was Moneyball. Which was good. The rest of them are like the fake movies named on Seinfeld when Elaine keeps renting Vincent's art-house goon movies.“The Artist” “Midnight in Paris” “The Descendants” “The Tree of Life” “Hugo” “Extremely Loud & Incredibly Close” "Rochelle, Rochelle: A Young Girl's Erotic Journey From Milan to Minsk" "Sack Lunch"Okay, those last two are just from Seinfeld. Hard to tell, though. Like, some of these nominations were shocking or something. This site like parodies the movie posters or something. I don't know what half of these are about, so I don't get most of the jokes. Comments1
Welp, you left off War Horse which I thought was actually very good but I'm an animal lover anyway.

The NFL has taken the entertainment place Hollywood once held. No doubt this year's show will be a ratings bonanza, for Netflix.

If The Descendents wasn't about Hawaii and was instead about land in, say, the Phoenix area, it would have sucked. Unimpressive writing for the actors to work with, but the shots were great.

>>>Was that winning streak thing even in the book?
I don't remember it. But the film is stuck with the facts: The underdog team doesn't win the world series, or even the championship series. so I guess they went hunting for things they could make a big deal out of and discovered the streak thing, which, like, who cares? But they do a good job with it because all of sudden I care about this thing that no one cares about, and so few people care about it that no one's even mentioned it in 10 years. I'm partial to old, silent movies and that bygone era. I haven't been to the theater in years, but did wonder how The Artist was. Interesting concept in today's morass of crap Hollywood movies.
I kinda miss the laughs I've been getting in the evening from Ace's liveblogging. Isn't there a debate or something we can laugh at? but he didn't, he didn't go to boston. he turned the offer down. it's claimed the Red Sox used all of his ideas and stuff. I have no idea if that's true. “Extremely Loud Incredibly Close” Every time I see the ad for this one, I just hear the voice over guy in my head saying, "The 9/11 movie whose emotions will stir you, just in time for Oscar season." Posted by: mugiwara at January 25, 2012 09:00 PM (KI/Ch) 34
but... anyway, even though a lot of that was kind of bullshit, I think the script did a good job with contriving a Big Victory where, in fact, none had occurred in real life.
They couldn't just end the movie with: "And after everyone said it couldn't be done... it couldn't be done. They lost." The weird little secret of Moneyball, hiding in plain sight, is that that the Beane Moneyball team didn't do as well as the old-school team from the year before, with the same budget. Posted by: ace at January 25, 2012 09:00 PM (nj1bB) 35
What the fuck is a movie? It is one of those tings that clogs my netflix when I'm trying to find a decent TV show to watch.
Sparticus :Wife not a fan of new guy. My feeling is will improve...script was not so great for first come back. Think they should have done a couple of full-throated murder rage good orgy-time to make new guy more likable before they got into Sparticus getting into his new role as leader. You know, show Sparticus adopt a little dog. Have him avenge a few innocents. Other notes: Strap-on scene was surprising, if not welcome. Gore was exquisite. Long live the house Botiatus. And "Hugo" was actually a very good movie. MY problem with it is the pretension. It's REALLLY about how AWESOME movies are, ignoring the story arc of the kid who is just trying to make it to tomorrow, and find a calling.
Great performances, and not a bad story, but the exposure pissed me off. The movie should have been about HUGO not Pa Melier. Posted by: Douglas at January 25, 2012 09:05 PM (YKOnu) 43

One problem with The Descendants is that they get a guy like Clooney, who is subtle but rangey, and they write a character for him that has no discernible personality.

I clicked through the WAPO link for the Oldman nomination story. The story was surprisingly better than expected.
Tinker, Taylor... is still my favorite movie of all time. There, Sir Alec G., as George Smiley, made me a believer of his mastery of the acting business. Though I did rather like him in the Horse's Mouth. When I saw, Leon, The Professional, and watch Oldman play the crazy DEA guy, I just get the giggles over his skill playing the definitive bad cop. I can't say that I knew who Oldman was until that movie. So the new version of Tinker, Taylor... is the only movie on my must see list. A list that has had zero entries for more than a handful of years. As to the others movies on the list, zzzzzzzzzz. I'm of the understanding that Extremely Dull and Incredibly Soporific sucks.
It landed on the top ten worst list of one of the writers at AICN. Never saw Money Ball. Never saw Hugo. The Artist isn't the type of movie that comes to this town. The Tree Of Life is directed by a man that makes me hate film. To hell with that guy. Even money he wins best director. Rochelle, Rochelle...look, if I want porn, I'll get porn. Why would I want to pay money to see people dry hump each other? Looking over that list, the only movies that were nominated that I've seen were Transformers (Sound editing and visual effects) and Harry Potter (Visual effects). Chunnel
From what little is heard of the movie's content, the plot appears to involve an explosion in the Channel Tunnel which causes its evacuation. Larry David can be heard saying the line, "Everybody out of the Chunnel!" according to the DVD Commentary on the Seinfeld Season 7 Episode "The Pool Guy". Writer David Mandel states that the plot of Chunnel involves the President's daughter being trapped in the 'Chunnel' between England and France. An exchange between a fictional President of the United States and a presidential advisor can additionally be heard: "Mr. President, your daughter is in the Chunnel". The tagline of the film was "Chunnel: 32 Miles of Hell". -- via that link tami linked Posted by: ace at January 25, 2012 09:39 PM (nj1bB) 160

Her defining quote is: "Where I grew up, a girl could only become three things: Stripper, mom, or crusading district attorney. I became all three." Her ex-husband, detective Ray Bright, I'm trying to get Adam Baldwin form. Posted by: ace at January 25, 2012 09:49 PM (nj1bB) 181

It sucked beyond belief. There was only one redeeming feature, and that was Carla Bruni in a bit part -- she is smoking hot. Everything else was awful. The characters were all unpleasant people who would get their teeth knocked out in bars for behaving have as unpleasantly as in this shitshow of a movie. The plot was stupid beyond compare, and the fucking costumes were pathetic. It was sort of a period piece, but they fucked that up too. Ok, I was going to say, I thought they nominated something like 32 movies these days, (and hold a NCAA type tournament), but I see there are more on the link.
Yeah, I never heard of most of these, and I don't even recognize any number of actor/actress nominees. Movies are getting to be like music and/or art, more and more divided between the supposed "good stuff" and the rest of the junk they make to please the masses. When we had more of a common culture, people more or less universally knew most of what was being produced, and the popular stuff was often (but not always) the really good stuff. Like Godfather, Citizen Kane, On the Waterfront, etc. The industry has changed, and it isn't just because we are getting old that we collectively remember the movies they made years ago better than we do the award-winning CINEMA they are making these days. Didn't see many movies that I liked this year.
Drive was one of the few. Rango was good. Captain America. Also DC released an animated Batman: Year One which was good. But that's one of the all time great graphic novels so I was biased to like it. The Muppets was just ok, which was disappointing. And Dragon Tattoo movie was just boring and the chick was gaunt and ugly. I prefer it when movies make the the freaky goth chicks actually be a really hot chick with just an odd piercing or weird hair and not an actual unattractive woman. I really don't mind that all the women in movies tend to be very attractive, even the "ugly" ones. I don't want to watch actual ugly women in a movie. But let me get this
straight: 1) banks will be punished (do I understand this right, by a committee headed by Eric Holder?) if their lending is too risky, 2) and they will be required (by the same committee) to give more home loans (meaning, it must be, to people who would otherwise not qualify for the loans, or else the government would not have to be involved) at lower rates (which means rates that do not compensate them as much as the market says they need to be compensated for the risks they are taking, all of which sounds like a new edition of the policies that brought on the financial collapse), 3) which must mean that they will have to pull back on risky lending someplace other than homes, 4) the only place that most banks would be able to pull back on riskier customers would be loans to small and new businesses, 5) but these are the businesses that have created just about all the jobs over the last 20 years and he said early in the speech he wants to encourage them, 6) so maybe their growth capital will come from selling stock to the kinds of people who invest in new and small businesses, 7) but through the Buffet Rule he’s going to double the tax rate on investment income ... Go read the whole thing ... I've seen the trailers for "The Descendents" and I was wondering what in the heck it is about. After reading the wickiI've discovered that it's about about a married woman who has an affair and then gets into an accident that puts her in a coma from which she'll never recover and how her family deals with it. That's it. Oh, and there's something about selling land in Hawaii. So, I don't think I'll go see it. In fact, I think I would rather take cheese grater to my shins for two hoursthan have to sit through "The Descendents."

I very much enjoyed The Artist. Dujardin nailed the hammy, overly-expressive acting in a lot of silent films, but was still able to make his character more than all that. I'm not usually the sort that goes for concept movies (the concept usually sucks), but I thought this one was really good. Just make sure to see it in a theater where you won't have assholes talking all though it. Plus it's nice to see a movie that isn't trying to force a message on you (other than "don't always go it alone", I guess).
Full disclosure, I am a sucker for the 20's style of cars, clothing, etc. so that probably helped a bit. If this doesn't get Costuming I'll be sad. Posted by: Karusky at January 26, 2012 10:33 AM (kwOeR) 386
