Top-Secret Larry Summers Economics Memo To Obama Reveals Stimulus Was About Advancing Political Agenda

And lots of other good stuff.

Now, in the below, the boldfaced, number points are Pethokoukis' digests, not actual quotes from the memo. The plain text below each bold title are the quotes supporting it.

1. The stimulus was about implementing the Obama agenda.

The short-run economic imperative was to identify as many campaign promises or high priority items that would spend out quickly and be inherently temporary. … The stimulus package is a key tool for advancing clean energy goals and fulfilling a number of campaign commitments.

2. Team Obama knows these deficits are dangerous (although it has offered no long-term plan to deal with them).

Closing the gap between what the campaign proposed and the estimates of the campaign offsets would require scaling back proposals by about $100 billion annually or adding new offsets totaling the same. Even this, however, would leave an average deficit over the next decade that would be worse than any post-World War II decade. This would be entirely unsustainable and could cause serious economic problems in the both the short run and the long run.

3. Obamanomics was pricier than advertised.

Your campaign proposals add about $100 billion per year to the deficit largely because rescoring indicates that some of your revenue raisers do not raise as much as the campaign assumed and some of your proposals cost more than the campaign assumed. … Treasury estimates that repealing the tax cuts above $250,000 would raise about $40 billion less than the campaign assumed. … The health plan is about $10 billion more costly than the campaign estimated and the health savings are about $25 billion lower than the campaign estimated.

via @jonahnro

More: Thanks to spongeworthy, quoting from The Atlantic, Obama was also told that "shovel-ready" chiefly applied to horse-shit in neat steaming piles.

But it is important to recognize that we can only generate about $225 billion of actual spending on priority investments over next two years. and this is after making what some might argue are optimistic assumptions about the scale of investments in areas like Health IT that are feasible over this period.

The great part about this is not that it is news, all the morons new this is what was going to happen when they saw the program/s these fucktards were implementing, it is that
they knew and wrote down that they knew their program would not work,
would not do what they said it would,
that they were publicly, overtly, and unashamedly lying, and
that they wrote it down in a memo

these guys have been bad actors from the beginning. What I want to know, is at what point do you cross the line from a difference of opinion to treason. They were lying about what they were doing and what its affect would be and they knew their actions would contrary to the best interests of the nation.

Christina Romer said the same thing in her exit interview. The stimulus was a political payback, as the 'experts' thought that the US economy would just recover on its own, so they could borrow all this money to use as a payoff.

130 How can you fix the RomneyCare thing-if everyone in the Conservative media refuses to talk...

I don't even care about RomneyCare itself except for two things: 1) the kind of politician who believes that's a good idea is the kind of politician who believes the Government needs more power. 2) It takes the issue of ObamaCare off the table (non-Republicans aren't even going to listen to your protestations of 'State Solution!").

My problems with Romney and RomneyCare are a little more emphatic- for one thing, the fact he still defends it to this day. For another, the fact that he's been running on a platform of "I don't need no steenkink Conservatives" largely to avoid the necessity of having to "apologize" for RomneyCare.

As I said before- if he thinks he can win without my vote, that's fine. I'll give my vote to someone who actually wants it.

I actually think the motivations behind romneycare and zerocare were different. I believe romney wanted to actually solve the financial problem whereas zero and his clowns are looking to increase and exert greater control over everyone everywhere.

romney needs to explain this and say we tried but it did not work. the benefit of admitting the mistake goes a long way ttowards diferentiating himself from zero and their programs.

156 OT

So last night I was catching up on past Ulstermanns "White House Insider" articles. Previously I thought of this insider as "plausible" but in the last few articles it seems during some drunk interviews the Insider let enough slip out that confirms he is the long suspected James Carville. The man has Clinton and Obama blood and dirt on his hands but is married to a Republican.

Then the first thing I see today is Carville in a Reason.tv spot for school choice in Louisianan.

The other thing that blew my mind and kept me up all night was his story of what happened with those oddities around Feinstein including her early release of the death of Osama news during the funeral for the mysterious death of her employee "Kam Kuwata."

For me its gone from Plausible to WTF?

Previously he said things that at the time seemed ludicrous or like boilerplate conspiratorial but now are pretty accepted even among leftists.

-Obama is on anti-depressive medication
-Obama is lazy and watches lots of sports
-Jarret dominates the white house and agenda
-Bill Daily was brought in to salvage the Obama White House for the old Democrats.
-Michelle Obama is contempt for white rurals that most would qualify as "racism"
-Fast and Furious scandal went to the top and was going to come out
-Chicago especially Shore Bank has lots of buried skeletons of Obamas
-Birth Certificate story never had legs.

Again not a bad record and James Carville was clearly always an outsider to the new left.

I do not like any of our choices and I would rather have gingrich than romney, however, I believe romney is more likely to get elected than gingrich. As much as I would enjoy seeing gingrich verbally pistol whip zero in a few debates and actually watch zero stuttering in a dabate, I would rather watch zero loading his crap in a ryder van and heading back to his rezko financed estate in rahmville.

that being said, as important as it is or us to get the white house it is as important to not take our eyes off of congress. we should be looking for veto proof majorities in both chambers in the event that we need some people with stiff backbones to enforce some changes - even on a weak conservative.

I do believe this is one of the scenarios that the founding fathers envisioned when they came up wit the separated powers scheme. We should be embracing the construct and playing hardball. It may not be popular to say so but we have half of congress and the supreme court while zero and his clowntards have the white house and half of congress. we should be beating them with the power of the purse like a sack full of oranges in a mob movie.

Those who just happen to be paid less are still in it for the power they have over the sheeple who keep electing those in power because of their power to suppress the news we need to know to function as we were meant to.
It's a vicious cycle, and once all the principled people are gone (as is the case today), it's all downhill from here.

could be. I hope you are wrong. I do not like the position I am advocating, I do believe it is the least of the evils available.

sad but true, much like nixon gingrich has an aesthetic issue - he ain't much to look at - and there are voters that are going to vote on that - consciously or subconsciously an and the mfm will leverage it against him 100 to 1. Gingrich has the baggage that was recently released. Gingrich also has a bad reputation from his time in congress, admittedly the mfm makes it worse than it was and does not recount the good stuff.

My primary goal is to get zero out of the white house. we can deal wit what arises next, but that is essential.

Obama's been running against Romney for years. OWS was started because they figured we'd end up with Romney. I and others have pointed this out for months. Romney is obviously the candidate Obama is most comfortable in going up against. That said if it's Newt, Barry can put his feet up and wait for Newt to inevitably destroy himself. I'm no Romney fan, but Newt brings only a hair more conservatism, and a boatload of unelectability along with him.

Posted by: mugiwara at January 23, 2012 06:37 PM (KI/Ch)

248 But it would be nice if one or more of our candidates used this to point out that the Obama Admin knew what the consequences of their actions were, and decided to go ahead with them anyway.
I think if we had been pointing these things out all along, as we saw them coming, by now the public would know.
But we have not. All our politicians cringed in fear of being called racist and insisted Obama was a nice man. They don't cry 1/10th as loud as they should, for fear of upsetting the moderate.
Consequently, the public may or may not know. But now some think it wise to continue as we have, pandering to the platitudinous (as opposed to say, having the platitudinous pander to us, which reminds me of someone as I write this) and aiming above all not to offend anyone.
That's how it looks to me.

The GOP has held the House for this year and has done NOTHING to stop the insanity. NOT A THING. Those dipshits couldn't even pass a bill to prioritize payments so that Barky couldn't threaten the world with US default (which Barky most certainly should have been impeached over doing - the Oval Office resident is not allowed to threaten US default as that goes against clear Constitutional language).
But, the House GOP didn't do squat. They just watched and let it all happen - even as it was happening to THEM, ostensibly.

269 if you think the Republican electorate is torqued off now about being left out of the process and told it's Mitt or else.........If Republicans are smart (And God knows if they are, they are geniuses at hiding it) they will do a broker and nominate someone who either didn't run (Like Jindal for instance) or dropped out before the real blood letting started (Tpaw for instance). 274 I was rather supportive of a possible Palin run, but I understood the fear that her negatives might be insurmountable, and she still sits around -20 favorable/unfavorable with near 100% name recognition. Newt is at -30 with about 90% name recognition. I honestly believed that a Palin nomination could overcome her negatives, but it'd be an uphill battle. Why? Because her negatives were mostly a media construct, in reality she is attractive, charismatic, scandal-free, and a rock-ribbed conservative that would fire up the base. Newt? Ugly, kind of an asshole, scandal's a'plenty, and not terribly conservative. If a Palin run would be a sure loser, a Newt run is over before it even starts.

Miss80s

They can't draft anyone.

They can't have a brokered convention.

They have to get mitt to eat the humble pie-that's their only option.

They better do it-tonight.

If Gingrich wins Florida that accomplishes two things at once-

it breaks the "Mitt is Inevitable" meme while also breaking the"Gingrich
is unelectable ".

And, momentum is a real thing.

They can't do the first two options because-if you think the Republican
electorate is torqued off now about being left out of the process and
told it's Mitt or else...----> Making decisions out of spite is neither helpful nor wise. I understand that people are angry but there was a way to at least try to get a better candidate and that option wasn't pursued. Remember too that Mitt wasn't the first (or even second) choice of some members of the conservative "intelligentsia" as well.

293 Gotta be honest here. To the poster above who mentioned Summers as one of the liberals we can bargain with in the future when we gain control.. uhhh no. The only bargain or negotiating going on is if they want to wear a blindfold to the firing squad or go with the guillotine.

This is beyond treason. They've blown the debt so far out of whack in just 3 years that we may never recover from it. Just for political gain. He risked 230 years of greatness so he could get back at whitey. I didn't gain from it either, so I won't be suffering. I'll make sure of that. The people who lined their pockets when this SCOAMF took office should be tried for treason, shot, and their pensions used to pay down the debt or the people who were screwed. Their families can pound sand

So who's going to be the guy who holds the decapitated head up to the crowd? I'll volunteer

I also must say this. We need to fire at least 20% of the gov't work force now. I don't give a shit about them either. I've been without a job for awhile because of this asshole, and you can do it too. I honestly don't give a rats ass about you spoiled brats in gov't jobs anyway.

295 I don't think it would work........Well you are sort of running out of options. Reconciliation with Mittens is probably not possible. Winning with Santorum, or Newt is equally unlikely. So either run someone that will likely lose, or, alienate your base by nominating someone they hate and lose, or, nominate someone new and hope that the party likes them. It is a super long shot. But it is looking more and more like the most attractive option. It shows the base "Message received, you don't want Mitt" and allows the establishment to pick someone with a decent chance.

In things big and small they are breaking and needlessly conceding hard won advantages and strengths everywhere.

I hate to borrow from movies but the line "The greatest trick the Devil ever pulled was convincing the world he didn't exist.", applies to this situation. The things they are doing are bad for everyone in the country, old and young, rich and poor, pick you populist categories. The word for what they are doing is treason. Treason, rightly so, is not something that is or should be bandied about lightly, gut it is a word, it has a definition, and even a strict reading of the definition describes what these people are doing.

334 You mean T "I loves me Ethanol" Paw? Who ran as Romney Lite. And dropped out after a poll didn't go his way...

---> No, I mean drafting someone. The Establishment was not initially united around Mitt and some parts of the base jumped from candidate to candidate looking for the Not-Romney.

347 It's third party all the way.
There is another way, young Padiwan. You could take the path less chosen and infiltrate the Pubsith Lords from within and thus gain their power, and increase it. The Force tells me that this is already happening in many places across the galaxy. It's as if a great uprising of those formerly known as the Majority Who Remain Silent are no longer quiet, and seeking out candidates with whom they agree and sending them the ancient currency in private, bypassing the Pubsith Lords altogether.
The Emperorhas decree that these scattered souls are to be labeled "racist" and "draggers of the knuckles", but there are powerful forces aligned with them, as many longin the Imperial Senate will soondiscover, to their peril.
Their codeword starts with T.

"nominate someone new and hope that the party likes them. It is a super long shot. But it is looking more and more like the most attractive option. It shows the base "Message received, you don't want Mitt" and allows the establishment to pick someone with a decent chance."

They wouldn't dare. All the candidates whoput in all the time, effort and money are now just to be swept aside for a hand-pickedone? Yes, that will really thrill the base.
