| Overnight Open ThreadWell I guess most of you survived Irene. Okay then on to the ONT. Obama's Uncle Arrested For DUI in Massachussetts Oh wait make that that Obama's illegal immigrant uncle was arrested for DUI after ramming into a police car:A number of media outlets have already reported that an illegal immigrant from Kenya by the name of Onyango Obama, 67, was arrested last week on Wednesday after he rammed his SUV into a police car in Framingham, Massachusetts. He was later charged with DUI among other violations. I spoke to Framingham Public Information Officer Lieutenant Delaney who told me that when Onyango Obama was asked at booking if he wanted to make a telephone call to arrange for bail, the Kenyan immigrant replied: “I think I will call the White House.”I guess it's always good to have your nephew as president. Look your family are about the only people in your life that you didn't get to choose and God knows other presidents have had loser relatives. But come on, is every single Obama relative in the US an illegal alien/grifter of some sort?!? ![]() These are among the 75 references on this year's Beloit College Mindset List, a compilation intended to remind teachers that college freshmen born mostly in 1993 see the world in a much different way: They fancied pogs and Tickle Me Elmo toys as children, watched televisions that never had dials and their lives have always been like a box of chocolates. Once upon a time, relatives of the current generation swore never to trust anyone over the age of 30. This group could argue: Never trust anyone older than the Net. ![]() FEC May Allow Foreign Born Muslim to Run for President? The agency released two draft advisory opinions (pdf.) Friday that could permit New York lawyer Abdul Hassan to go through the initial steps to run for president. But the FEC’s pending decision won’t be the last word on the constitutional issue of whether someone born outside the United States can be president. Remember This Guy From 1980? ![]() Well he was Sgt. John MacAleese of the SAS and he died this week of a heart attack. He was only in his early 60's but apparently he never recovered from the death of his son in Afghanistan in 2009. Here is some video of his SAS team storming the Iranian embassy to rescue hostages in 1980. Yep the boys are back and providing their usual commentary. And some classic B&B here. And not a drop was spilled. ![]() ![]() Well now you can for just $399. But you have to provide your own Ruger 10/22s. ![]() "For years, popular psychologists have insisted that boys and men would like to talk about their problems but are held back by fears of embarrassment or appearing weak," said Amanda J. Rose, associate professor of psychological sciences in the MU College of Arts and Science. "However, when we asked young people how talking about their problems would make them feel, boys didn't express angst or distress about discussing problems any more than girls. Instead, boys' responses suggest that they just don't see talking about problems to be a particularly useful activity."But no doubt 12 years of school indoctrination will change this. My wife and I visited some old friends in a little town called Wnchester about 50 miles outside Cincinnati. As we left we drove past a older gent playing cornhole with, I presume, his grandkids in the front yard. It was a nice evening and I gave him a friendly wave from the car as we passed. He shouted, "Hey! Wait a minute". I backed up the car and he asked if we needed any tomatoes. We said no, we grow our own. Then he said, "How bout some melons or squash. There some on the porch. Help yourself". I pulled over and took a melon, said thanks, waved and left. Gotta love small town life. That sort of thing seldom happens among stranger in the larger cities.

Instead, boys' responses suggest that they just don't see talking about problems to be a particularly useful activity." Women like to talk about problems, but don't really seem interested in fixing them. Look at any women's magaazine. It's chock full of discussions about problems (weight, relationships, sex, fitness, health, child-rearing, etc.) with detailed regimens for addressing the issue -- usually written by hackfreelanceauthors who just make it up as they go along. It doesn't matter whether the advice works because no reader will ever attempt to implement the advice. They just like to "explore" the problem. Men just try to fix problems. That ticks off the women because the man isn't communicating, meaning, he isn't exploring the problem by talking endlessly about it. Just generalizing here so don't start throwing shit. My guess with that billboard is that that church offers counseling for Asians with low self-esteem. With the goal of helping them learn to be happy with who they are. Lots of Asian actresses in Hollywood get plastic surgery to look more Caucasian, and it's kind of a fad in Japan and Korea for women to fold their eyelids and glue them in place so their eyes look rounder and have that epicanthic fold. It makes me suspect that there must be an epidemic of low self-esteem among Asian women. Still... they probably could've worded that billboard better. It does look bad.

Wife and I were in beautiful beach city in SoCal last night at art festival and then afterwards started walking and out of nowhere bagpipers began marching down the sidewalk. I said to wife, let's follow them. They were marching behind two Italian guys in suits and we followed them all the way to a restaurant. Inside they were playing Frank Sinatra and a bunch of the old stuff. We stayed for dinner and enjoyed the atmosphere. Turns out it was one of the Italian guys birthdays and they had a scavenger hunt and the bagpipers were following them around. I was at a roof-top event in downtown L.A. several years back and was I in my element. Drove in, threw keys to valet, proceed up to private party on roof where Honduran guy is rolling hand made cigars. Liquor flowing baby, oh flowing everywhere. Then walk over to my seat at a table that was no less than 50 feet long with the whole shebang. And I'm puffing and blowing smoke like a chimney. Why the hell would a handle be (or need to be) esoteric? It's a combination of my initials and part of my service number. I've used it for -- I don't remember -- 30 years, I'd guess, going all the way back to the old AppleTalk network before it morphed into AOL. I live in Colorado. Cthulhu is mentioned in that PC (1992) game Alone in the Dark. For example, if the character reads a particular book predicting the coming of Cthulhu, that character starts screaming and contorting uncontrollably, leading to loss of energy. Also, the main antagonist of the game is protected by creatures called "Deep Ones".

Asian actors and actresses get the eyelid surgery done because it does give you more emotive, expressive eyes. It's hugely popular in S. Korea.
Asian actresses in America are less likely to have it done because Hollywood wants them to look "asian". The Lucy Liu look is exotic here, but not in Asia. That's a common look there. You can find lots of before and after pics for famous asian actors and actresses. The surgery makes a big difference. No way Jackie Chan becomes an international superstar with his original eyelids. Remember, a significant minority of east asian naturally have the rounder eyes. So it's not likely it's unknown thing there naturally. It's just most don't have it. It's like white chicks dying their hair blonde or wearing fake blue contacts. You can lose out to the lucky minority that gets a genetic advantage -- or you can even the playing field with some cosmetic surgery. Big, highly visible, highly emotive eyes are a huge advantage in acting. Posted by: Clubber Lang at August 28, 2011 11:18 PM (QcFbt) 202

There's nothing sad about the eyelid surgery. It helps actresses get more work. Because audience all over the world -- asian, white, black, etc, etc -- prefer the round eye look most of the time.
How many white actresses dye their hair blonde? How many balding actors get hair transplants? How many big-nosed Italian and Jewish actresses get nose jobs? Global audiences prefer actresses with small noses and big round eyes. If a Jewish chick wants to be an actress, but has a big nose and has hairy arms -- there's nothing wrong with getting a nose job and getting laser hair removal to pursue her dream. Same with a Korean chick who wants to be an actress. Jackie Chan's decision to get the eyelid surgery was the best decision he ever made. There's nothing sad or shameful about it. It was a smart business decision. Posted by: Clubber Lang at August 28, 2011 11:39 PM (QcFbt) 233

Another point worth noting about Hollywood and Asian actors (both male and female) is that roles for Asians tend to be written specifically for Asians. It's harder for an Asian actor to break out into more general roles. It can happen; Lucy Liu is a prime example. It's just harder.

Eastwood's eyes are capable of opening wide. That's why it's dramatic when he narrows them. Wouldn't be nearly as dramatic if they were narrow slits all the time.
Big eyes are also more important on actresses since they tend to have to convey a deeper and broader range of emotions. But it's not a universal, of course. Streisand became huge despite her schnozz. But it's not a high percentage play for a young, big-nosed actress to make. Hey, if I'm as talented as Streisand my nose won't matter! Posted by: Clubber Lang at August 28, 2011 11:47 PM (QcFbt) 248

Besides, the chemical warfare employed by the plants was stupid in of itself. If plants wanted to kill off people en masse, all they'd need to do is emit a fast-acting neurotoxin in the air that killed people within seconds, not caused them to kill themselves. Why would plants need to demoralize people by causing them to kill themselves in graphic and horrific manners? The Happening's sole gimmick was that it was M Night's first R-rated movie. That is all. M. Night Shyamalan fizzled pretty quickly. The last entertaining movie he made was "Signs." I even liked "Unbreakable" even though you had to wait until the end of the movie for it to be good. You shouldn't have to do that. It should be engaging while you build up to "the twist."

look up the before and after photos of the double eyelid surgery. Just google asian eyelid surgery before and after and you'll find tons. It's a small thing, but makes a huge difference. Patrick Stewart is, like Streisand, the exception that proves the rule. And both had extraordinary talent.
In general, if you want to work as an actor, having good hair is a big plus. It can be overcome with talent and luck. So can being ugly. Or fat. Newman from Seinfeld had a nice career as an ugly, disgusting, fat guy. But that's not a high percentage play. Most movies and TV shows want conventionally attractive people. Posted by: Clubber Lang at August 29, 2011 12:10 AM (QcFbt) Dude never leaves the stage. I don't think he transitioned to film very well, I never got the impression he *was* the role so much as he was *playing* a role. There's no fourth wall with him, he's always enunciating and hitting his marks and turning precisely and on and on... Willis has a narrower range but at least sometimes you forget he's acting. I never liked Gary Oldman as much as some people do - but dude has RANGE. He can make you forget he's an actor, or fool you into thinking he's someone else on screen. I don't have a problem if a black actor lightens his or her skin to get a role. It's quite common in India. And lots of whites darken their skin. These people want to act. They do what is necessary to expand their options.
And double eyelids ... most people on the planet just prefer it. It's why half-white, half-asian chicks are so often so hot. You get the slim figure and no body hair of the asian, with rounder eyes and bigger tits from the white -- it's a win-win! Throw a little black in there to get a bigger ass and bigger lips and you got yourself some hot-ass Brazilian chicks. Anyway many east asians naturally have the double eyelid, it's just a minority trait. Like blue eyes among whites. There aren't many roles for flat-chested chicks. Nothing wrong with getting a boob-job. People prefer to look at curves. Posted by: Clubber Lang at August 29, 2011 12:22 AM (QcFbt) 283

Maybe my reaction is due to me generally liking the Asian look. I also like the classically Jewish look, though, and somehow I find it less sad when a Jewish actress has had a nose-job. Maybe because I'm part Yiddish, so I'm a little less culturally removed from their problems. Yeah, I think that might just be it.

Comatus, I've always been hesitant to describe myself as Jewish, because I don't adhere to the religion and was not raised in the ethnic tradition. It's not a shame thing; it's an ignorance thing. So, in yet another Cthulhu meandering.....
I spent much of my formative years in terror that I was going to end up like my dad in key respects, which has lead to a number of odd decisions. For instance, my father had the Incredible Receding Forehead. His hair never thinned on the sides, but the forehead just kept going and going and going and going. By the time I was 10, it was a good 3" onto the top of his head; by the time I was 15, it was back past his ears; by the time I was 20, it had reached the back angle of his skull....but he had three lone, uncut hairs that he continued to comb over the desert-like expanse. When the wind blew, his three lonely hairs blew around like a particularly transparent bad toupee. Sometimes, they'd get blown back onto the side where they originated and look like a tiny fountain jetting up into the air and falling back onto his left shoulder. I urged him over-and-over to just go with a 'Friar Tuck' tonsure, but no........ So, here I am -- I'm going bald 20% at my temples, and 80% as an anti-skullcap at the back of my head....forehead's pretty much where it's been for 45 years. But I keep worrying about having a (nonexistent) comb-over. Anyway, the 'singing' thing.....my dad would occasionally recite some poetry in an odd chanting way, sort of humming along tunelessly. This went on for years, until my mother found Marty Robbins' Gunfighter Ballads Trail Songs on vinyl in a remainder bin and bought it. Queuing it up on the console stereo, she was amazed to find that she had heard the words before -- they were my dad's odd poetry! Further, the "odd chanting" that my father did with the words seemed very like the way the lyrics were set to the music.....if you couldn't carry a tune in a bucket, had no ear for pitch, and could only approximate a rhythm. Using deduction alone, we determined that my dad had been singing along to this album for decades without us being the wiser. So I retain a healthy skepticism about my own abilities to carry a tune, and seldom sing with anyone else around.....unless I can quickly follow it up with a professional recording and say, "I really meant that." The psychological community did an infamous "study" a
while back. A boy was mutilated during a circumcision, so the psychologist in question convinced the parents to turn him into a her... Needless to say, it didn't work. "She" was always a boy and when he found out stopped the act completely. Ended up committing suicide if I remember. Posted by: 18-1 at August 28, 2011 10:49 PM (FBr/C) I think I know that one. I believe he had a bunch of reconstructive surgery to create a micro-penis and married a fat, disgusting slob with ten jillion kids. But if he committed suicide, hey, can't blame him. Hell if your dick was chopped off, you were made to grow up a girl, and even after getting shit tons of surgery to end up with a tiny pecker all you could land was some fucking beast of a woman would you be looking forward to tomorrow? Sheit, I'd open fire on a McDonalds and take as many people with me. Posted by: Robert at August 29, 2011 01:45 AM (4ixH5) 364

We never thought to try to keep him from 'singing' wherever he wanted. It took 20 years and a miracle to figure out what the hell that was in the first place, we figured there was no way anyone else would even suspect. On the other hand, if he'd picked up a guitar, the contrast between his vocals and the chords may have caused a transdimensional rupture and done the same thing to our universe as the "engineering disasters" link in the sidebar. Her creditors should have cut her sorry ass off long ago and not let her run so far into debt -- and probably would have, if there weren't government guarantees and/or securitization games available to make it attractive to give money to deadbeats. That said, I'm going with something out of the Irene thread:74 Back in the day, I knew a bunch of people that were all psyched out about life: "The cards are against me; I'm not one of the favored; life sucks." Most were on drugs, or played video games all the time, held nowhere jobs, did nothing.... ....and, being the proactive guy I am, I came up with a solution. Knock on their door at 3 am, bundle them up in their bathrobe without so much as a nail file, fly them out to the backcountry of New Guinea (or the Amazon), and parachute them in at dawn. In their bathrobe. If they didn't make it back to civilization, problem solved; if they did make it back, I'd put serious money that they'd never take shit for granted again. What's more, they'd probably have a great work ethic -- I'd hire one in a heartbeat just to see. That is, I'd hire one so long as they could never find out that they were graduates of "The Cthulhu Treatment" -- 'cause otherwise they might have a bad attitude about working for Cthulhu.... With Wurdibitsch's woman, I'd expand the range to tropical Africa, so they could examine all the marvels of electricity they have there. I LOLed when you described Sorcerer's Apprentice as a girl adventure movie. I thought I was the only one.
Well, see. There's my problem. If the Apprentice had been played by a girl with no changes to lines or even making the character act.... girly - but just like the guy (and change the love interest to a guy) - the movie would have been the same. Except, with a girl in that role. Which is what I want to see - all the good roles go to guys, with a few exceptions (Salt). So, now, TSA is a boy's adventure film when it could have easily been a girl's adventure film without being girly. Like Labyrinth. (The Oz novels and Piratica are both material ripe for film adaptation, but nowadays they'd fuck it all up...) It's trivial, I know, and doesn't change my like for the movie. I just want to see a movie with a girl lead that fits my parameters. I love watching guys (Riddick, Priest, TSA) but sometimes I want the gratification of seeing a female like myself in a good old fashioned adventure story. Even in books, all the popular books are lead by a male (Harry Potter) or a group of kids (Spiderwick). Which is why I tend towards Diana Wynne Jones and Tanith Lee for adventures, I suppose. Merovign, I've been wanting to ask you if a remark "Speaking of wishcasting" was somehow directed at me a few days ago. The thread was moving quickly on another subject and I didn't want to intervene with it . I know I kinda called you out of the gate initially but it was a good natured call. Yeah Hollister has VERY low speed limits. LOL.. That was what I hated about living there. As Sammy Hager sang " I can't drive 55'' .. which got me one to many tickets in Hollister.

You know, it comes down to being new to posting here and having a little trepidation about acceptance because I'm not military (lifetime regret) though I cannot love U.S. military enough, especially these days. Posted by: Ace's liver at August 29, 2011 04:13 AM (1+XRG) Yes and that's very good news, but I'm still like half normal and the docs, insurance, and benefit people are haggling over what I can and can;t do - not much according to the docs. And they still want to implant the defibrillator, despite the enhanced IAS risk for non-sedentary peeps. All teh data is for oldsters and they kind of admit they don't have statistics on people my age, and I get radically different risk estimated from different docs. It's annoying. With any luck they'll argue until it's no longer necessary. Posted by: Merovign, Dark Lord of the Sith at August 29, 2011 04:20 AM (bxiXv) 443

yay! (I'm a total story glutton... it's a sad fact.) I'm working on an Urban Fantasy collection of short stories and starting a sci-fi novel and a couple of stories. The ideas are there, the discipline is not. I understand the ideas vs discipline - it's the bane of my own existence in just about everything (it's how I pick up a million hobbies and rarely ever have results....). On writing: My mom and I have a story idea that we've been working on, but nothing's clicked yet. On my own, I have a few floating around with a couple kind of fleshed out in terms of plot. Someday... I suppose I'll put that pen to paper and try. Really, I want to try as an exercise more than to get an actual product. Used to write paragraphs every day that had nothing to do with anything, just to write something interesting. To be creative, just for a few minutes of the day. Might be worth doing again.
