FEC May Allow Foreign Born Muslim to Run for President?
Apparently they don't want to judge the whole 'natural born citizen' thing in the case of a Guyana-born naturalized citizen despite the 'election' term in their name.
The agency released two draft advisory opinions (pdf.) Friday that could permit New York lawyer Abdul Hassan to go through the initial steps to run for president. But the FEC’s pending decision won’t be the last word on the constitutional issue of whether someone born outside the United States can be president.

The request put the FEC in the rare role of deciding a large constitutional issue that has only a few intersections with campaign finance law. The two commonly held constitutional requirements to run for president are that the candidate be 35 years or older and be a “natural born citizen.”

Both advisory opinions answer three of Hassan’s four questions in a similar way. They state that Hassan could be a candidate, may solicit funds and would be required to file disclosure reports. But the two opinions differ on whether he may receive federal matching funds.

Women like to talk about problems, but don't really seem interested in fixing them. Look at any women's magaazine. It's chock full of discussions about problems (weight, relationships, sex, fitness, health, child-rearing, etc.) with detailed regimens for addressing the issue -- usually written by hackfreelanceauthors who just make it up as they go along. It doesn't matter whether the advice works because no reader will ever attempt to implement the advice. They just like to "explore" the problem.
Men just try to fix problems. That ticks off the women because the man isn't communicating, meaning, he isn't exploring the problem by talking endlessly about it.

Wife and I were in beautiful beach city in SoCal last night at art festival and then afterwards started walking and out of nowhere bagpipers began marching down the sidewalk. I said to wife, let's follow them. They were marching behind two Italian guys in suits and we followed them all the way to a restaurant. Inside they were playing Frank Sinatra and a bunch of the old stuff.
We stayed for dinner and enjoyed the atmosphere.
Turns out it was one of the Italian guys birthdays and they had a scavenger hunt and the bagpipers were following them around.
Oh, and let me tell you, the atmospherics were great i.e. beautiful women trapsing around all over the place.

One curious thing. Irene dropped to 100 mph and 951 mb around 2 pm Friday and every update until landfall on Saturday morning said 100/951 even with changes. Then it stayed at 85 mph 953 mb till it reached NJ

I see no good reason why I can't have a chainsword rigged up if I find a good small engine mechanic.
Please send me the schematics for this weapon if you ever come up with it. Perhaps I can make a design to put them on chains ala Kratos' chain blade weapons.

One of the local high school mascots is a Highlander. I was impressed to find out they actually have a couple of pipers in the high school band. I can't say I've ever known anyone who willing decided to learn to play the pipes over something more conventional like the piano or violin.

I was at a roof-top event in downtown L.A. several years back and was I in my element.
Drove in, threw keys to valet, proceed up to private party on roof where Honduran guy is rolling hand made cigars. Liquor flowing baby, oh flowing everywhere. Then walk over to my seat at a table that was no less than 50 feet long with the whole shebang. And I'm puffing and blowing smoke like a chimney. OK this may be OT, I think.
Wife and I were in beautiful beach city in SoCal last night at art festival and then afterwards started walking and out of nowhere bagpipers began marching down the sidewalk. I said to wife, let's follow them. They were marching behind two Italian guys in suits and we followed them all the way to a restaurant. Inside they were playing Frank Sinatra and a bunch of the old stuff.
We stayed for dinner and enjoyed the atmosphere.
Turns out it was one of the Italian guys birthdays and they had a scavenger hunt and the bagpipers were following them around.
Oh, and let me tell you, the atmospherics were great i.e. beautiful women trapsing around all over the place

Asian actresses in America are less likely to have it done because Hollywood wants them to look "asian". The Lucy Liu look is exotic here, but not in Asia. That's a common look there.
You can find lots of before and after pics for famous asian actors and actresses. The surgery makes a big difference. No way Jackie Chan becomes an international superstar with his original eyelids.
Remember, a significant minority of east asian naturally have the rounder eyes. So it's not likely it's unknown thing there naturally. It's just most don't have it.
It's like white chicks dying their hair blonde or wearing fake blue contacts. You can lose out to the lucky minority that gets a genetic advantage -- or you can even the playing field with some cosmetic surgery.
Big, highly visible, highly emotive eyes are a huge advantage in acting.

No problems with flooding or loss of power here [CT shoreline] but the kittehs did not care for the racket the wind and rain made last night. I'm temporarily taking care of two kittehs from the shelter where I volunteer (building has no basement and would be a death trap for animals with any significant flooding) as well as my own cats. Neither the home team nor the visitors had much appetite for food last night, which is unusual for them. Scarfing it up now, though.

My kids and I actually enjoyed it as a stupid but entertaining movie until the end when we figured out it was THE PLANTS! Ruined the entire thing. Just like Crystal Skull when you figure out at the end that it was ALIENS! Hollywood sucks.

Besides, the chemical warfare employed by the plants was stupid in of itself. If plants wanted to kill off people en masse, all they'd need to do is emit a fast-acting neurotoxin in the air that killed people within seconds, not caused them to kill themselves. Why would plants need to demoralize people by causing them to kill themselves in graphic and horrific manners?
The Happening's sole gimmick was that it was M Night's first R-rated movie. That is all.

In general, if you want to work as an actor, having good hair is a big plus. It can be overcome with talent and luck. So can being ugly. Or fat.
Newman from Seinfeld had a nice career as an ugly, disgusting, fat guy. But that's not a high percentage play. Most movies and TV shows want conventionally attractive people.

Dude never leaves the stage. I don't think he transitioned to film very well, I never got the impression he *was* the role so much as he was *playing* a role.
There's no fourth wall with him, he's always enunciating and hitting his marks and turning precisely and on and on...
Willis has a narrower range but at least sometimes you forget he's acting. I never liked Gary Oldman as much as some people do - but dude has RANGE. He can make you forget he's an actor, or fool you into thinking he's someone else on screen.

And double eyelids ... most people on the planet just prefer it. It's why half-white, half-asian chicks are so often so hot. You get the slim figure and no body hair of the asian, with rounder eyes and bigger tits from the white -- it's a win-win! Throw a little black in there to get a bigger ass and bigger lips and you got yourself some hot-ass Brazilian chicks.
Anyway many east asians naturally have the double eyelid, it's just a minority trait. Like blue eyes among whites.
There aren't many roles for flat-chested chicks. Nothing wrong with getting a boob-job. People prefer to look at curves.

Bagpipes. During the first Gulf War, my usual bar hangout had a pipe & drum group that would march in on Friday night and do about 20 minutes of bagpipe music. They'd close with a medley of the service songs (Marine Corps hymn, "Wild Blue Yonder" etc). The crowd would go WILD. Great fun.

I spent much of my formative years in terror that I was going to end up like my dad in key respects, which has lead to a number of odd decisions. For instance, my father had the Incredible Receding Forehead. His hair never thinned on the sides, but the forehead just kept going and going and going and going. By the time I was 10, it was a good 3" onto the top of his head; by the time I was 15, it was back past his ears; by the time I was 20, it had reached the back angle of his skull....but he had three lone, uncut hairs that he continued to comb over the desert-like expanse.
When the wind blew, his three lonely hairs blew around like a particularly transparent bad toupee. Sometimes, they'd get blown back onto the side where they originated and look like a tiny fountain jetting up into the air and falling back onto his left shoulder. I urged him over-and-over to just go with a 'Friar Tuck' tonsure, but no........
So, here I am -- I'm going bald 20% at my temples, and 80% as an anti-skullcap at the back of my head....forehead's pretty much where it's been for 45 years. But I keep worrying about having a (nonexistent) comb-over.
Anyway, the 'singing' thing.....my dad would occasionally recite some poetry in an odd chanting way, sort of humming along tunelessly. This went on for years, until my mother found Marty Robbins' Gunfighter Ballads Trail Songs on vinyl in a remainder bin and bought it. Further, the "odd chanting" that my father did with the words seemed very like the way the lyrics were set to the music.....if you couldn't carry a tune in a bucket, had no ear for pitch, and could only approximate a rhythm. Using deduction alone, we determined that my dad had been singing along to this album for decades without us being the wiser.
So I retain a healthy skepticism about my own abilities to carry a tune, and seldom sing with anyone else around.....unless I can quickly follow it up with a professional recording and say, "I really meant that."

Guys do "venting" too, but less often and the character of it is subtly different.
Often they try to turn it into "brainstorming" because that doesn't feel like you're just whining, which venting does otherwise.

We watched Soul Surfer this evening. Very good movie. I highly recommend it. Also watched Black Death, which I picked out because it has Sean Bean. Good acting but it was very brutal and graphic and devoid of hope at the end.

I have a new appreciation for any of you out there that do audio production out there. I'm working on a pet project to help me in DOOM world. It's going well but I wouldn't want to do it for a living.

It's always a hard call as to who will like what. It has a fair chunk of Bowie but he is actually acting, believe it or not.

Seems to me that the 80s had better girl adventure movies. Can't really remember any recent ones. (My gripe about Sorcerer's Apprentice is well known)
That and I like the puppetry and stop motion from the 80s better than current CG (however good it looks). I still say that when they started putting CG in it looked better. (See DragonHeart)

Well, see. There's my problem. If the Apprentice had been played by a girl with no changes to lines or even making the character act.... girly - but just like the guy (and change the love interest to a guy) - the movie would have been the same. Except, with a girl in that role. Which is what I want to see - all the good roles go to guys, with a few exceptions (Salt).
So, now, TSA is a boy's adventure film when it could have easily been a girl's adventure film without being girly. Like Labyrinth. (The Oz novels and Piratica are both material ripe for film adaptation, but nowadays they'd fuck it all up...)
It's trivial, I know, and doesn't change my like for the movie. I just want to see a movie with a girl lead that fits my parameters. I love watching guys (Riddick, Priest, TSA) but sometimes I want the gratification of seeing a female like myself in a good old fashioned adventure story. Even in books, all the popular books are lead by a male (Harry Potter) or a group of kids (Spiderwick). Which is why I tend towards Diana Wynne Jones and Tanith Lee for adventures, I suppose.

Yes and that's very good news, but I'm still like half normal and the docs, insurance, and benefit people are haggling over what I can and can;t do - not much according to the docs.
And they still want to implant the defibrillator, despite the enhanced IAS risk for non-sedentary peeps. All teh data is for oldsters and they kind of admit they don't have statistics on people my age, and I get radically different risk estimated from different docs.
It's annoying.
With any luck they'll argue until it's no longer necessary.

I watched Priest last night. It was pretty good. There was a heroine character from about 1/3 forward who was good. Though I get your point, not the 'star' of the movie.

Yeah - I like Maggie Q. Priest was all about Karl Urban, though. That man steals scenes like no other.

Well.. not everything, but close enough. I tend to get a little frustrated if I don't find a wikipage detailing that obscure film I just watched - since I just expect it to be there. Wiki's only good for tv and movie summaries. The rest of it is... eh.

I'm working on an Urban Fantasy collection of short stories and starting a sci-fi novel and a couple of stories. The ideas are there, the discipline is not.

I understand the ideas vs discipline - it's the bane of my own existence in just about everything (it's how I pick up a million hobbies and rarely ever have results....).
On writing: My mom and I have a story idea that we've been working on, but nothing's clicked yet. On my own, I have a few floating around with a couple kind of fleshed out in terms of plot. Someday... I suppose I'll put that pen to paper and try. Really, I want to try as an exercise more than to get an actual product. Used to write paragraphs every day that had nothing to do with anything, just to write something interesting. To be creative, just for a few minutes of the day. Might be worth doing again.
