| Thaddeus McCotter Declares for President July 2ndGiven Obama's weakness, why not? McCotter caused a stir at the Ames Straw Poll campaign space auction last week when he attempted to anonymously secure a key place for the August event, according to The Iowa Republican. His representative was eventually forced to reveal her client after the other campaigns, who thought the anonymous bidder was for an undeclared candidate such as ex-Alaska governor Sarah Palin or Texas governor Rick Perry. McCotter reportedly paid $18,000 for the prime location that ex-Arkansas governor Mike Huckabee occupied during the 2007 Ames Straw Poll.Old and Busted: Everyone's afraid of Obama New Hotness: No one's afraid of Obama, not even Mark Halperin Duh: I wrote he was declaring for Congress. No, dum-dum me, he's already in Congress. He's declaring for president. McCotter On Red Eye: Clip below. Pro-Union: Hailing from Michigan, he's pro-union, which I don't love. Thanks to Allah for that. CommentsPosted by: museisluse at June 30, 2011 07:53 PM (Y3n3D) 2

New Hotness: No one's afraid of Obama, not even Mark Halperin
I know we smell blood, and I've long said Karl Rove and W sold out conservatives more than most acknowledge. But he's right in the WSJ: Many still like Mr. Obama personally but disapprove of his handling of the issues. They are not GOP primary voters, but they are watching the contest. The Republican Party will find it more difficult to gain their support if its nominee adopts a tone that's harshly negative and personally anti-Obama. The GOP nominee should fiercely challenge Mr. Obama's policies, actions and leadership using the president's own words, but should stay away from questioning his motives, patriotism or character. He will do this to his GOP opponent to try to draw Republicans into the mud pit. They should avoid it. Obama can't run on his record. All he has is the leftover personal....stuff. Stick to the record. Posted by: CJ at June 30, 2011 08:24 PM (9KqcB) 68

I'll like him. A lot. I so wish he wasn't in a UAW district. He has some hard choices as a conservative that wants to get reelected. The union issue is taking care of itself. The unions are losing all the big battles, one after another. And it's not healthy to "love" any politician. Support, yes. Love, no. Every single politician will betray you at least once in his or her career. All politicians can rationalize any action he or she takes. Posted by: Llarry at June 30, 2011 08:59 PM (SI/pw) 118

Posted by: Steph at June 30, 2011 08:57 PM (VfTQp) For me, Thaddeus is a lot like Rudy. Very smart. Clearly capable. Strong on defense and not bashful about speaking his mind on issues. Quick on his feet. But, with a few problems on serious, deal-breaker issues.I like them both very much but neither would be my first choice for the Presidency, though I would be comfortable with either as President, since, even though I disagree with them on some serious issues, they are not the types to try and force some crap through Congress on these issues while in office. McCain, on the other hand ... Even if McCotter does nothing more than use his ascerbic wit to bash the president, it's a win for our side. He comes across as very intelligent, and can slay the JEF in a way that will not seem nasty.

No one voted for Obama because he was likeable. They voted for him because he was magically going to make the world wonderful.
Posted by: Oldcat at June 30, 2011 08:47 PM (z1N6a) Wrong. Liberals voted for him because of that. Normal folks just thought he was a fresh face. Don't make the same mistake Democrats did in attacking Reagan personally. Posted by: CJ at June 30, 2011 09:33 PM (9KqcB) 128
It's a little simplistic to say that McCotter is pro-UAW or pro-union in general. Here he explains why he supported a bailout for GM:
http://tinyurl.com/3dsqk34 He doesn't say it here, but he asked that Congress, not the Obama administration, handle the restructuring. His mantra, he says, is to make bad decisions of the government less bad. Posted by: Llarry at June 30, 2011 09:34 PM (SI/pw) 129

I've pimped McCotter on this site before, but my doubts arestill considerable. Everyone's all over the pro-union stuff (which is a damn bitter pill) so I'll stay off that one. He's a Republican Main Street Partnership member- considering that Snowe and Collins are members, perhaps "Maine Street Partnership" would be more appropriate. Lincoln Chafee used to be a member, as was Snarlin' Arlen. I'm not sure if being a Republican Study Committee member washes that off. Kudos are also in order for voting against the bank bailout. He said in hisUncommon Knowledge interview that he distrusts grand plans imposed from Washington and believes Congressmen should be district-oriented. He blamed much of the spendthrift behavior of the Bush years on having to pay off Congressmen in earmarked pork to compensate for the political capital they were burning back home bysupporting unpopular Washington-basedschemes (e.g. No Child Left Behind, Medicare "reform" etc...). I love the guy's wit andhis take on national security issues. I want to believe his populist streak could make him an asset with blue collar voters (with whom he also self-identified in the Unc. Knowledge interview - calling himself a Reagan Democrat, if I recall properly). I'm probably just over-compensating for my earlier man-crush on him here, but I'll need to take a longer look at him operating in the spotlight (and answering questions on some of the above) before I can fully support him again. It's easy for me: I'm voting for the person who ends up running against Obama. Bachmann, McCotter, Romney, Palin, Perry, Pawlenty, Huntsman, or (God help me) Paul--doesn't matter. Obama is in a class all his own. He's entirely lawless, which makes the next election the easiest political decision I'll ever have to make. Posted by: Llarry at June 30, 2011 10:03 PM (SI/pw) 133

Hell, there will be no perfect candidate. I rather like Perry and Palin, Cain (if he'll quit saying stupid shit about the 2nd Amendment) looks OK, and I *MIGHT* consider T-Paw. Romney? no.effing.way. Bachman may be a good VP candidate- she's clean and articulate (it's a joke, people). Everyone else is pretty distant. I'll have to look into McCotter some more- even if it's just for the sharp tongue. I rather like that. A true AoSHQ candidate. We like the cut of this RINO's jib. McCotter supports union card check. a/k/a The Union Thug Full Employment Act. McCotter supported the auto bailout. a/k/a The UAW Bailout Bill McCotter supported Cash for Clunkers. McCotter voted to require union labor on government contracts. McCotter voted to override Bush's veto of the 2008 Farm Bill which was among the biggest spending bills in the nation's history until Porkulus came along. The only reason this guy is a Republican is because the Democrats would be too embarrassed by how far up organized labor's butt this guy has parked his nose to claim him. (apologies to P.J. O'Rourke.) McCotter has neither the money nor the guts to take on Debbie Stabenow for Senate but he expects to be taken seriously for President? Posted by: Mitt McCain at June 30, 2011 11:21 PM (u+8qs) 138
Even without his pro-union record, which is the LAST thing Republican voters want in their primaries this cycle, he's another House member with no administrative or management experience.
The United States federal government is the world's largest operation. It's budget is bigger than any country's GDP except for China and Japan and our own. Hasn't Obama demonstrated clearly enough the danger of letting an inexperienced manager start at the top? Any Republicans signing on to "Welcome Back McCotter" must be as dumb as the Sweathogs. Posted by: Adjoran at June 30, 2011 11:32 PM (VfmLu) 139
Up thread someone mentioned that we should not attack Obama directly and they are correct, but there is no reason why Repubs can't show Obama in clips. Pictures are worth 1000 words, as they say.

This is pretty powerful.
I think if you look at McCotter's record you will see he did what he was supposed to do, look after his state. I've been listening to him on red eye and other shows and honestly, this is a very brilliant man with an incredible grasp of foreign policy. I'm thinking McCotter and Herman Cain would make quite the dynamic duo. Posted by: curious at July 01, 2011 12:41 AM (k1rwm) 141

Uh... a question.
What's the guy ever done? Really done? Balanced a budget? Passed a bill? Cut taxes? Chaired a committee? Won a close election? Been elected statewide? The only thing McCotter has ever run is his mouth. ( To borrow a phrase a Detroit Mayor once coined about Jesse Jackson.) Even the most infatuated McCotter lovers on this forum can point only to his "wit". Look at the guy's record in the Michigan state senate. Its an Obamaesque trail of Hallmark Card legislation -- state poets and state fossils. Haven't the last 2.5 years proved what awful disasters happen when a candidate's mouth is the candidate's sole qualification for office? Posted by: R. Perry at July 01, 2011 07:36 AM (u+8qs) 146
If he is owned by the Union Party, they will run things for another 4 years and our country will be done.
Obama ain't winning anything. I doubt he would even win a primary, and the unions know this. Why wouldn't they put one of "theirs" in his place. The ends justify the means. Posted by: Eric Holder at July 01, 2011 09:18 AM (YA6+6) 147

Posted by: Eric Holder at July 01, 2011 09:18 AM (YA6+6) Fascinating to see how McCotter is being attacked. Perry is another Texan. Just on that fact alone I won't vote for him. don't really care what he's done, he's another Texan and even though you say there are no bush, rove tires, don't believe any of it. Read a comment on here about McCain/Soros ties. someone asked why this was never discussed during the election. So, if that is true, that puts Miss Sarah out of the picture pretty fast. I kind of wish the poster that made the comment would elaborate. See in this election, character is crucial, past performance is crucial. That's why Rudy Guiliani should get in the race. That's why Michelle Bachman should stay in the race. That's why herman Cain should stay in the race. That's why Rick Santorum should keep talking. If you are looking for your perfect conservative candidate, good for you, but don't expect the independents to vote for them. They may not be so thrilled to vote for the incumbent but if it's the wrong republican, they won't vote, they've done it before, they'll do it again. Maybe it's just me but people are going to be looking for someone with character and conviction and honesty. They don't want someone too far to the left or too far to the right. It's interesting. I'm accumulating a long list of folks I would never vote for and the list of who I would vote for keeps getting shorter. Posted by: curious at July 01, 2011 10:35 AM (k1rwm) 148
I met him once. (True story.)
