Flashback: When Lefties Thought US Special Operations Troops Were Outlaw Assassins

I was pretty bi-partisan last night and I stand by it. I would have never thought in a million years President Obama would have the brass balls to send a team of Navy SEALs deep into Pakistan to get bin Laden in such an up close and personal way. But in the cool afterglow of bin Laden's death, I'd like to remind folks that not everyone was always so excited about killing America's enemies

Behold a breathless Keith Olbermann in March of 2009 pimping the rantings of admitted liar Sy Hersh.

Our fifth story on the Countdown tonight: As we reported on this newshour last night, investigative reporter Seymour Hersh, claiming to have uncovered a covert executive assassination ring that reported directly to Vice President Dick Cheney’s office. A reminder -- if one is needed – that in 1976, Mr. Cheney was the chief of staff to President Ford. Meaning, by the time Cheney was back in the West Wing, it appears he had either forgotten about his own boss’ executive order or worse, he had decided to ignore it.

Mr. Hersh is making the revelations at a forum in Minnesota two nights ago. The topic: America’s constitutional crisis. Hersh saying of Mr. Cheney and his inner circle, quote, "They ran a government within the government." Adding, "Eight or nine neoconservatives took over our country."

Hersh’s bombshell allegations about the assassination ring, the result of reporting for a book he says might be still a year or two away from being published. Hersh is telling MinnPost.com in an email after the event, that the disclosures are, quote, "not something he wanted to dwell about in public."

The toothpaste, however, is already out of the proverbial tube here. When the discussion touched upon the abuses of executive power, Mr. Hersh asked how these things tend to happen and whether they continue to happen to this day. In his reply, the reporter describing a secret commando unit officially called the "Joint Special Operations Command."

HERSH (audio clip): "It’s a special wing of our special operations community that is set up independently. They do not report to anybody except in the Clinton, I mean, in the Bush/Cheney days, they reported directly to the Cheney office. They do not report to the chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff or to Mr. Gates, the secretary of defense. They report directly to him.

They are not -- they have absolutely no -- Congress has no oversight of it. It’s an executive assassination wing essentially, and it’s been going on and on and on.

And just today in The Times, there was a story saying that its leader, a three-star admiral named McRaven ordered a stop to certain activities because there were so many collateral deaths. It’s been going into, in -- under President Bush’s authority. They’ve been going into countries, not talking to the ambassador or the CIA station chief, and finding people on a list and executing them and leaving. That’s been going on, well, in the name of all of us."

The Joint Special Operations Command...Hersh and Olbermann's band of rogue assassins was the lead command in the death of bin Laden.

Were it not for this high-value target, it might have been a routine mission for the specially trained and highly mythologized SEAL Team Six, officially called the Naval Special Warfare Development Group, but known even to the locals at their home base Dam Neck in Virginia as just DevGru.

This HVT was special, and the raids required practice, so they replicated the one-acre compound. Trial runs were held in early April.

DevGru belongs to the Joint Special Operations Command, an extraordinary and unusual collection of classified standing task forces and special-missions units. They report to the president and operate worldwide based on the legal (or extra-legal) premises of classified presidential directives. Though the general public knows about the special SEALs and their brothers in Delta Force, most JSOC missions never leak. We only hear about JSOC when something goes bad (a British aid worker is accidentally killed) or when something really big happens (a merchant marine captain is rescued at sea), and even then, the military remains especially sensitive about their existence. Several dozen JSOC operatives have died in Pakistan over the past several years. Their names are released by the Defense Department in the usual manner, but with a cover story -- generally, they were killed in training accidents in eastern Afghanistan. That’s the code.

Olbermann (link to his site) is over the moon excited about Obama getting bin Laden. I guess he was against JSOC killing terrorists before he was for it.

Michelle Malkin has more on the left's hypocrisy on "secret prisons".

Almost all Americans are rightfully excited about bin Laden's death but let's not pretend all of us were always in favor of it. Hacks like Olbermann only celebrate American victories when it fits his political narrative., It's disgusting and it shouldn't be ignored.

The man's career zenith was the night he left ESPN. He has since managed to get fired at MSNBC (twice), fired at Fox Sports, filled in for Paul Harvey because he basically would work for free, got a tryout at CNN before being told he wasn't good enough to make the junior varsity squad over there and is now currently the "star" of Al Gore's soon to be defunct cable channel which promotes the use of viewer (read - free) content.

The people pushing this are the biggest Obama fans already. I don't know if this will change anyone's mind in a voting booth come November 2012. After we're done celebrating OBL's death, we have to get back to bigger issues like deficits, debt, inflation, energy, unemployment, etc., that are much more important to this country long term.

Exactly. Killing OBL doesn't address the major issues that were driving down The One's poll numbers: high gas prices, inflation, joblessness, the overall economy, the debt and the deficiet.
The One gets a bounce - goes to maybe 63 percent approval before "The Summer of Recovery II, The Sorrid Sequel" kicks in and by Labor Day he is back at where he is now.

17 Drew - the problem in my mind on the is issue is the left vs. right mentality, that being that the left just think things should just magically happen nice and clean while the right knows that in order to get things done you have to slap some faces and dunk some heads etc...
It's like that in every aspect of their thinking be it the economy, social issues and on and on it goes.

Wonder if Olberdouche has enough honesty to modify his fanciful narrative of last night, when he falsely claimed this was all due to the return to "within-the-law" intelligence procedures instituted by his glorious Messiah, when it turns out this was a victory 10 years in the making, including info gleaned from sources held in Gitmo.

Not likely.

74 I've never heard of a sitting senator doing this....have I just missed it?

U.S. Sen. Scott Brown is going to Afghanistan as part of his duties for the National Guard, he said today in an exclusive statement sent to the Herald.
Brown, who is a lieutenant colonel in the Massachusetts Army National Guard, will be doing his required annual training in the war-torn country.
“As a Lieutenant Colonel in the Massachusetts Army National Guard, I have service obligations that I fulfill each year. Following in the tradition of other lawmakers who have completed their military service requirements overseas, this year I have requested to conduct my annual training in Afghanistan,” said Brown in a statement. “Doing so will help me to better understand our ongoing mission in that country, and provide me first-hand experience for my duties on the Senate Armed Services, Homeland Security, and Veterans Affairs committees.”

This was a very risky operation and he okayed the riskiest version of it from the list of possibilities.

The risk was that we could have had 4 burning helicoptors and a dead Seal Team, no OBL or a living gloating OBL. The comparison to Carter and Desert One would have been unavoidable. So, enjoy the day - enjoy the fact that OBL is dead. But politically, its not a game changer.

Obama and his minions in the press are going to be basking in the glow of our Seals and intelligence officers work for quite awhile. The press is already writing stories that makes it sound like Obama was on the first helecopter in leading the charge.
That isn't going to make gas go down or people start hiring. The more Obama takes credit for the hard work and bravery of others the less people will think of him. He can't help it though, it's the way he is.

Hey, DrewM, I defended your decision to say Obama's move was brave. But a lot of us disagree. And we've given great reasons why.

Obama assassinated Osama Bin Laden on the same weekend that he apparently also tried to assassinate Q'daf in an operation that was supposed to be a no-fly zone and for which there was no Congressional approval (or consultation). He succeeded in offing OBL using the tools he and his cronies have been trying dismantle for years. Tools Bush put in place.

We are not safer today than we were yesterday. Whose fault is that?

Would it offend all those supposedly moderate Muslims if he didn't - you know, the ones who have always claimed he wasn't acting as a true Muslim?

I hope it's not true - he didn't deserve ANY kind of religious ceremony, high road or not I wonder how the Muslim who supposedly performed the funeral rites felt about it?

This was a perfect way for The Vapid One™ to end the comparisons with Jimmah. He gets to officially say he succeeded where Cahtah failed.

Bush's policies finally came to fruition despite President Obama.
If future President's kill Quadafi and any other leaders that Obama, the 2009 Nobel Peace Prize winner decides to start a war with without any justifiable reason, we'll give Obama the credit.
