| Overnight Open Thread - TGIF Edition (Mætenloch)Welcome to Friday all. Just a few more days until we enter the holiday zone. Oh and don't forget that tomorrow is International Talk Like a Hobo Day Why You Should Never Talk to the PoliceHere's a fascinating talk by a law professor and a police detective where they explain why you should never talk to the police. Even if you're innocent and/or completely uninvolved. And they make a very good case against it. Fair warning - it is a longish legal lecture but don't let that scare you - it really is interesting and worth your time. Now I had always heard this advice and understood the general reasoning behind it, but here the speakers actually give specific examples of how an innocent person could easily incriminate themselves by accident when questioned by a skilled detective. And yet if everyone followed their advice, many if not most crimes would go unsolved and we'd be a worse, more lawless society for it. So it's a trade off between the personal and common good. The best outcome is that you follow this advice and everyone else doesn't. And yeah that's kind of unsatisfying but at least now you're a more knowledgeable moron when it comes to this issue. AoSHQ Lifestyle Tip: Use a Water Filter To Upgrade Val-u-rite to Quality Vodka Here's an article from the 1909 Los Angeles Times showing that only 1 out of every 20 murderers was actually executed. So much for the good ole days. Apparently Ronald McDonald Has a Sexy Daughter Not bad for a ginger. And as a youtube commenter helpfully points out, apparently there's some cameltoe at 0:16. Is it just me, or does anyone else feel that there should be musical accompaniment for the flaming skull? My vote is for either the part of the 300 soundtrack where Leonidas is crowned king after killing the wolf near the beginning (which would go with today's flaming skull), or possibly "Yakkety Sax" (the Benny Hill music), which makes anything hilarious.
The only problem is, I usually see the skull before I read the headline, so I don't know which music works better for a given story. Posted by: Hoss Fuentes at November 20, 2009 10:20 PM (I9Jek) Posted by: CoolCzech at November 20, 2009 10:20 PM (QECjC) 22

I'm way cheap, tonight. I'm buzzed off a bottle of Asti. But that's because the Bacardi's wasn't cold, yet.
So, those of you in Seattle, there is a coupon running in the Seattle Times (I don't buy it, someone gave it to me, I swear) that if you buy 5 bottles of 750ml booze from the company who imports Bacardi's you get $45 back. I love Barbara Bush! About 5 years ago or so I read an amusing article about her in the paper. Can't remember the exact details, but it was along the lines of her being interviewed by a newspaper reporter who was asking her questions related to her husband being president and then her son being president, and she'd mentioned that during that time interval she'd grown 3 dress sizes. The reporter misunderstood her and wrote it up that she'd said she'd grown 3 breast sizes, and she said her family really yukked it up about that one.

The Americans protected the Australians in the early stages of the Pacific war. They will never forget that. It is not like Great Britain. They are allowed to protect themselves.

Sassy, I guess it just depends on your doctor -- some of 'em are so freakin' prudish about that stuff -- and how you ask. I doubt my "give me a scrip or I'll do street drugs" would work on a lot of these guys, lol. But, my doc is a doll and I love him to death and we have a very good, long-term relationship. One good way to find what you need is if you befriend a pharmacist and then ask them which doc seems to have the most liberal prescribing policy.

In fact, the PLANET (Globe) has either remained constant or has cooled, during the ENTIRE G.W.BUSH ADMINISTRATION. SO, the TEMPLATE is shifted. The FRAUDS are not FRAUDULENT FRAUDS. The people who EXPOSED the FRAUDS, violated the FRAUDS RIGHTS!!!!!! The TRUTH was obtained ILLEGALLY!!!!! The TRUTH was obtained ILLEGALLY!!!!! The TRUTH must be THROWN OUT OF COURT!!!!!! Because, THE TRUTH was found out WITHOUT LIBTARD DUE PROCESS. So....BECAUSE the LIARS were CAUGHT and the LIARS...LIES WERE CAUGHT by ILLEGAL MEANS...!!! We must ADMONISH THOSE WHO CAUGHT THE LIARS. And the LIARS continue to lie and the MEDIA is too STUPID AND CORRUPT to understand what I JUST ILLUSTRATED PERFECTLY.
The big LIBTARD FINISH. I DID NOT VIOLATE THE LYING FRAUDS RIGHTS. I KNOW THAT THE LYING FRAUDS ARE LYING FRAUDS. UNDER WHAT OBLIGATION AM I!!! TO IGNORE THE FACTS THAT I HAVE LEARNED THROUGH NO CRIME OF MY OWN?

I've gone from being a mallrat in the 80's to loathing the places but stopped into the biggest one in our area tonight because that's where the Select Comfort store is and I wanted to check out their new pillow offerings. Just so happened tonight was their tree lighting ceremony. No where near the crowd I would have expected with that. It was off from what I would have expectedon just an average Friday night. Sorry, stuck on the AGW dump. There's been alot of focus on the emails but the documents are very informative. HARRY_READ_ME.TXT is a READ ME for Harry's work on the CRU TS2.1/3.0 datasets, 2006-2009! It's about a 200K text file filled with statements like: This should allow us to deduce the meaning of the co-ordinate pairs used to describe each cell in a .grim file ...There is another problem: the values are anomalies, wheras the 'public' .grim files are actual values. So Tim's explanations (in _READ_ME.txt) are incorrect. Had a hunt and found an identically-named temperature database file which did include normals lines at the start of every station. How handy - naming two different files with exactly the same name and relying on their location to differentiate! Aaarrgghh!! 1. He seems to continually makes reference to "public" data, as opposed to ? 2. Not very confidence inspiring. We are betting the world economy on the calculations from this software? It couldn't pass any kind of certification, defense, medical, whatever.

One can easily imagine Baker et al in the footwear of the contemporary designers on view at the exhibit: towering snakeskin boots by Jimmy Choo, beaded black-and-orange lace-up Manolo Blahnik sandals, and the wickedly high-beaded Christian Louboutin pumps made even sassier with their signature red soles. Great shoes transcend eras.

As recently as a few years ago, Mormons in Utah were predominately Repiblicans. Now, all of a sudden, they're predominately Democrats and Obama supporters. Something is very fishy there. There are increasing numbers of formerly Republican districts which have now become Democrat districts, ever since paper ballots were replaced with computerized voting There is no way in hell that 53% of Americans were dunb enough to vote for Ovama. I'm convinced that liberals have fiddled with the software of computerized voting machines, and that Democrats are stealing elections all over the country, and Republicans are too too lazy and too complacent to do anything about it. Make a splash with this regarding jambalaya. 1)2 cups rice cooked separately 2)2 cups okra 3)1 chopped onion 4)HOT sausage 5)cooked shrimp 6)1/4 cup jalapeno 7)1 can stewed tomatoes 9)Broth with 4 cubes of beef bouillon 10)2 cups of water Cook all ingredients sans rice for as long as you want. Then when you are ready to serve, add rice. For spices, add garlic, cajun spice, and cayenne pepper to taste. Posted by: The Aughts. at November 21, 2009 01:34 AM (nxUYP) 538

So, Purple Avenger, tearing out any walls tonight?
Just got done patching this one -- PIC HERE Where there used to be just a single switch working the hallway light, now there's (from left to right): - a single switch that operates the lower left 1/4th of the quad-receptacle down by the floor. I put this in so I could work a floor or end table lamp at some point in the future. No need now, but it was easy and only cost a couple of bucks extra to do now versus massive surgery later on.. - a stacked double switch that will operate a bank of recessed HALO lights in the cathedral ceiling in the living room. The next project is to install the lights (a nasty nasty job because they're going in on the backside of the cathedral where space becomes REAL TIGHT) - a stacked combo switch/receptacle where the switch operates the hall light. I put the combo in because I wanted a place to plug in the vac without having to reach under tables/furniture to find a convenient receptacle. This one will ALWAYS be convenient. I also put in enough extra wire going to the 3-wide switch box to service two additional switched devices and hooked it all up into a spare junction box in the attic so I could swap the single switch for a stacked double in the future to run some wall sconces in the living room. I haven't seen any sconces I liked yet, so I threw it together this way for now so I could get the hall functioning again and have the plug for the vac. >>Oprah ain't going away. She like the attention just like teh one.
In a sensational move, lawyers working on behalf of the Diabolical Interests Group (who's majority interests are controlled by none other than Satan, Grand Master of Hell and Very Evil Guy) announced they are pursuing a Breach of Contract Suit against famously wealthy talk show host, Oprah Winfrey. "We expect this to be controversial," Diabolical Interest lawyer, Fartbubble, told media sources, "But our company has a right to pursue its interests. And when we make a business contract, we expect it to be honored." "Oprah sold her soul to Satan a number of years in return for fame and fortune. It is clearly stated, in section twelve of the contract, that as a rich and famous celebrity she would actively seek to further the interests of Diabolical Interests by openly disseminating evilness and wrong doing throughout the community. We kept our side of the contract, but frankly Ms Winfrey has failed to keeps hers." The statement by Diabolical Interests is the first time that a business relationship between Satan and Oprah has been officially recognized by either party. However, there has been speculation in media circles for many years of the contract's existence. Some insiders claim that it was one of the worst kept secrets in show business. "Oh we all knew Oprah sold her soul to the devil years ago, it's old news," One anonymous source told PGiS. "How else would she have had the success she has? And frankly, I don't think too many of us are surprised at the recent developments. Oprah really has not been trying too hard to be evil for quite some time now. It was only a matter of time before Satan made a move to protect his interests." While Satan has not given any official statement, beyond what was already said by the lawyers, he did give a brief phone interview with Blazer this morning. "Oprah knew what she was getting into," he said. "Her agent went over the entire contract before she signed. To be honest, I'd rather it didn't get to this. I mean I've been pretty tolerant for some time now. But frankly her show has just got too sickly sweet these days. Where's the good old evil? Sure the interview with Wherestherum recently had a sinister element, I'll grant that, but the rest of her shows are so full of nice crap that it makes me want to puke. I mean... Doctor Logprof? Sure he might have sacrificed a few goats in his youth, but what's he done for me lately? And now that he's got his own show... well... Oprah's to blame... And she's supposed to be working for me." Oprah's lawyers also released a brief statement in response to the suit. "Oprah admits that she did sign a contract with Diabolical Interests in the eighties. However, she denies categorically that she has acted in any way that would breach this contract. She is prepared to fight this suit and feels that she would be vindicated by a court of law. She believes her show does support the interests of Satan and evil and has viewer statements that they would rather go to hell than watch another show of hers as evidence." As yet a court date has not been set. However, media interest seems likely to eclipse Michael Jackson's recent case. "It'll be huge," says celebrity watcher, Girl Thursday. "Satan and Oprah are real entertainment and business heavyweights in America. Satan has links to the Republican party too and Oprah tends to favor all that lovey dovey equality stuff that Democrats go for, so it's got a political edge as well." As recently as a few years ago, Mormons in Utah were predominately Repiblicans. Now, all of a sudden, they're predominately Democrats and Obama supporters. Something is very fishy there. There are increasing numbers of formerly Republican districts which have now become Democrat districts, ever since paper ballots were replaced with computerized voting A simpler explanation for that, the same reason that Colorado and Montana turned purple; Californians who moved there to get away from high taxes and crime, then vote in the same kinds of politicians who turned their former state to shit. You're thinking of brussel sprouts. Okra is awesome, and that is coming from someone who used to think that okra sucked until I grew them in my garden. Not really my job these days, my field electrician phase was a few years ago, although I don't mind electrical work at all when there's time to do it right. These days, being a research scientist/engineer and coming up with a constant stream of patentable ideas and novel manufacturing methods is my primary focus. All the home reconstruction is to get my "personal working space" exactly the way I want it to be to eliminate all the annoying crap in our lives that saps creativity. I also think hacking on the Bat Cave's wiring is a way to vent frustration. My attic is like a space all my own I can escape to. Yeah, but it's not good for the soul to watch a typical American self-hating Jew. It has really sucked that lately I have had more respect for Israeli Jews than American Jews. In fact with the exception of Jackie Mason and his ilk, plus the non-ending respect I have for American Jews with tattoed numbers on their arms, I would be damn near anti-"American" semetic, not anti-semetic Israeli. Anything to do with sound on Linux is flakey. Flash videos especially will kill the sound in Linux in a heartbeat. I would love to have an entire thread devoted to bagging on Flash. Just because. I was going to post a comment on "religious wars," comparing the blind spots of freetard open source zealots to Mac Fanboys to Windoze bigots, but why bother... when there is such a looming target out there. Flash blows chipmunks, sodomizes users and won't even give you a reacharound. Even if you pay for it. It hogs system resources and is the single most important factor in the proliferation of ugly, annoying, CPU-intensive web ads. And while I'm at it, I'm in the mood to flame townhall.com's former home page. With fast neutrons and plasma. They just redesigned it (thank any gods you please), and it has improved somewhat. So perhaps someone there decided to read a book on web design for dummies. I'm just pissy, full of vinegar, and not in the least thrilled that our Republic is officially dead as of tomorrow. Never mind the happy talk from certain pols and pundits. If Hellcare gets in and out of debate, it's done and graven in stone. The Republic is dead. Permanent Demotard/collectivist majorities and legislation as far as you can imagine. There is no reversal possible on Hellcare and socialized medicine. Mark Steyn is right about how this fundamentally changes the relation between person and state... into slave and master. Once this fix is in, removing it will be literally equivalent to saying "We're shutting down Medicare, and replacing it with nothing. You're out on the street." It was a nice idea for a century or two, but now liberty is dead, perhaps forever. Posted by: George Orwell at November 21, 2009 02:34 AM (AZGON) 648

A rational supposition, but very unlikely. The demographics of those people of whom you speak are such that it is extremely unlikely that they could have afforded, financially, to have made an exodus to Utah in sufficient numbers to have caused such a huge shift in the electorate in that state within just the past few years. (Never mind that their lifestules are such that there is nothing for them in Utah anyway.) I like the point that you made in that paragraph of yours that I highlighted with italics, though. I have a copy of "The Philadelphia Story" with Jimmy Stewart, Cary Grant, and Audrey Hepburn. I can never decide just how I feel about it. Sometimes it seems like brilliant satire directed towards an idle rich possessing the luxury of buying off moral obligations, sometimes it seems like incoherent rancor against morality of any kind as opposed to blind passions. Then again it comes across, occasionally, as mere farce in an airily fictional world of easy comfort and material wealth. In any case, it keeps begging to be seen again, and reminds us of how differently people saw issues of marriage, divorce, fidelity and propriety in a period at least two or three generations past. Yet they lived in an industrial world with modernism ascendant. Posted by: George Orwell at November 21, 2009 02:55 AM (AZGON) Posted by: chemjeff at November 21, 2009 02:55 AM (F+U5/) 693

But I'm not surprised he went back to the easy, cheap and lame "bash conservatives" mode. If he subsequently gave that up, good on him. One would hope he could find mountains of material to satirize regarding Pezzydent Earflaps McBowenscrape. Yet I doubt if he'll have the balls to do that often. You would think 12.5% funemployment in Clowinfornia would give even a guy like Phil something to bash against the current badministration's head. Nevertheless, Phil is a libtard. And that sort of illness is usually terminal. I'll bet Roger L. Simon will go back to libtard orthodoxy if he doesn't get gay marriage before 2012. #680 I always saw it as your Choice #1, a "brilliant satire directed towards an idle rich possessing the luxury of buying off moral obligations". Also like how it portrays the paparazzi. It's also a comedy of remarriage.
Interestingly enough, the playwright based the main character, Tracy Lord, off of Katharine Hepburn. Posted by: Miss'80sBaby at November 21, 2009 03:02 AM (zmiSr) 707
>>Um, anyone got anything more cheery?
Is it time to consider advanced physics a failure? The Large Hadron Collider is online and hasn't generated a black hole that destroyed the earth, and most scientists agree it never will.. which means the Pentagon and Congress are growing impatient with the lack of results from pure science programs. It has been left largely to the Europeans to sink vast sums into a field with diminishing returns on geopolitical dominance. Do you realize the participating governments - using tax dollars, no less - spent something like $8 billion on these silly science toys? Why, with that money, we could buy a few stealth bombers or a tenth of a nuclear attack sub and have some real fun! The proliferation of identified subatomic particles has not correlated with an increase in practical applications for them, unfortunately. They've got an almost complete list now. There's anti-strange-fuzzy-dice, glue-guns, hardons, leptons, leptoffs, furryons, and a few other ones with funny names. Well, I'm sure some people sleep easy knowing a proton is made of two up quarks and one down quark. But I don't! What good does that information do us? Does it pinpoint terrorists and implode their vital organs? No! Does it reverse the cosmological constant around suicide bombers and transform them into a harmless red mist? Not that I know of! So I ask you, why are they spending such ridiculous sums on this intellectual indulgence? As physics theory increasingly forges into the realm of the untestable, critics have begun to question the point of further research. They point to string theory and its relatives as prime examples. There have been few applications to come from it - silly string being the only real result (and that more as a conceptual aid), and despite millions of dollars of R&D, the Pentagon has not found a way to make it weaponizable. It sounds pretty good - 'Atom Smasher' - until you realize how small atoms actually are..You don't even hear a 'poof' when they collide. Nothing. To say I am underwhelmed would be an understatement. Imagine trying to shock and awe evildoers with that. Do we expect them to lay down their weapons because we can show them equations describing brane topology which might describe our universe? Science only becomes worthwhile when it yields real-world applications that allow us to dominate our less enlightened fellow humans. Posted by: sickinmass at November 21, 2009 03:03 AM (g7J39) 708

Incidentally, dimwitted Democratic Party stooges have infiltrated and they now run so many government departments and agencies that I predict that, with this upcoming census, they will be running more outrageous scams and they will be perpetrating even more hoaxes on the people of this country to advance their Communist agenda. They are incredibly stupid and they are extremely dishonest and corrupt. That is a very dangerous combination. In my line of work, unfortunately, I have to deal with a lot of federal, state and local government agencies in New York, New Jersey and Florida mostly. So I know of what I speak. These government bureaucrats are now out of control and they are managed by thoroughly dishonest imbeciles with political connections. Although it is money in my pocket, they frivolously throw away huge amounts of money to make their own jobs easier, and certainly not to benefit most of the people in their states and in their local communities. (Never mind that they are so ignorant and uneducated and they are so preoccupied with their own pathetic lives that they don't have a freaking clue as to the dangers of Communism and the threats that it presents to this country.) In a very real sense, minorities are already running this country, and they are so stupid, corrupt, incompetent and unqualified to run this country that they are running it into the ground. .(Never mind the slimy creeps like the late Teddy Kennedy who exploit the stupidity of those imbeciles for their own financial gain, and who are empowered by the stupidity and the sleaziness of those imbeciles, also.) That's it. I'm done venting for tonight. Posted by: Wake up, you morons at November 21, 2009 03:13 AM (Cta0m) Posted by: sickinmass at November 21, 2009 03:13 AM (g7J39) 733

PGIS, Hunch punch is various fruits soaked overnight at least (3 days in my case) in a clear alcohol like Everclear. Dump that and a bunch of Hawiian Punch (or something similar) into a large container. Add more clear alcohol until you can barely taste it then more punch to mask the alcohol taste. Invite lots of co-eds who like to get drunk but not taste the alcohol. Hope the punch makes them want to live up to the first part of its name since the lack of alcohol taste makes them consume much more than they normally would. If conservatives want to expand, one of the things they must understand is that while you can't trust big government, you can't entirely trust the police either. The left wants to coddle criminals while the right wants to coddle law enforcement. Neither approach is very good. In the midst of this, is the moronic war on drugs. Incredible profits in illegal drugs have led to all sorts of problems that should have been easily foreseen, considering the roaring 20's and the rise in organized crime. Another thing to consider is that if you legalize cannabis, a lot of the reason many young people automatically support the left will be eliminated. If the modern conservative movement truly represents individual freedom and the modern left, the will to power of fascism, this is a no brainer. Prohibition was a progressive idea. We've gone from a time when the odd jazz musician used these substances to our kids smoking heroin or crystal meth in their bedrooms. Time to end the worst excesses of it and perhaps even gradually get back to where we started. A war on jazz would have been better, at least we'd have much better music.

Re: Post #807 I agree with nearly everything that you said in your post at 1:07, Tim. You made some excellent (and amusing) points.. But I continue to believe that there must be a sensible and practical alternative to legalizing mind-altering drugs, one that continues to elude me, perhaps because it isn't one of my concerns and/or because I have bigger fish to fry, and it doesn't effect me and it isn't any of my business anyway.. BTW, I don't have a problem with anyone who consumes mind-altering drugs or alcohol. That is their prerogative. But I don't understand why anyone would take either mind-altering drugs or alcohol.. I haven't ever taken any kind of mind-altering drugs, and I could count on the fingers of one hand the number of times that I have consumed alcoholic beverages, and I don't think that I have missed out on anything. (I don't like the taste or the smell of alcohol anyway.) I would rather have an ice cream milkshake or an ice cream soda or even just an ice cold Coca Cola anytime. Thanks for your comments. Wrought iron is commercially pure iron. In contrast to steel, it has very low carbon content. It is a fibrous material due to the slag inclusions (a normal constituent). This is also what fives it a "grain"resembling wood, which is visible when it is etched or bent to the point of failure. Wrought iron is tough, malleable, ductile and easily welded. The first electrically-powered replica watch watch, the Hamilton Electric 500, was released in 1957 by the Hamilton Watch Company of Lancaster, Pennsylvania.
Watch batteries (strictly speaking cells, a battery is composed of replicas watches cells) are specially designed for their purpose. They are very small and provide tiny amounts of power continuously for very long periods (several years or more). In most cases, replacing the battery requires a trip to a watch-repair shop or watch dealer; this is especially true for watches that are designed to be water-resistant, as special tools and procedures are required to ensure that the watch remains water-resistant after battery replacement. Silver-oxide and lithium batteries are popular today; mercury batteries, formerly quite common, are no longer used, for environmental reasons. Cheap batteries may be alkaline, of the same size as silver-oxide but providing shorter life. Rechargeable batteries are used in some solar powered watches. Solar powered watches are powered by light. A photovoltaic cell on the face (dial) of the replicas watch converts light to electricity, which in turn is used to charge a rechargeable battery or capacitor. The movement of the watch draws its power from the rechargeable battery or capacitor. As long as the watch is regularly exposed to fairly strong light (such as sunlight), it never needs battery replacement, and some models need only a few minutes of sunlight to provide weeks of energy (as in the Citizen Eco-Drive).
