| Oh, My: Zogby Interactive Poll Finds That Independents Believe Bush Administration More Transparent and Open Than Chicago SocialistInteresting thing about polls: When people like you, they claim to like everything about you. When they don't like you, they start saying they don't like anything about you. That is why, for example, when Captain Wonderful was leading in the run-up to the 2008 election, pollsters reported the public claimed they actually trusted Obama on taxes more than McCain. Taxes. And the deficit. And controlling government spending. And for American Jews? They claimed they thought that Obama would be better for Israel. Um, okay. Just a tendency people have to blow off specific, secondary questions and just keep answering the same way they answer the primary, general question. Which candidate is has a better understanding of the trauma experienced by captured pilots held hostage at the Hanoi Hilton for eight years? Why, Barack Obama, naturally! I don't know if this poll finding really indicates that independents are waking up specifically to the fact that Obama is very deceptive and manipulative, or if it's just the standard "Yeah, he kind of sucks on everything" response, but either way, I likes it. Thanks to AHFF Geoff.CommentsPosted by: ikilledamanwithatrident at November 18, 2009 08:23 PM (6wUpV) 2

Good analysis, Ace. I personally think it's half general and half specific. That is, I think people feel like they were baited and switched, so they will respond negatively about the openness question more than others.

by the way, remember back in January when I predicted the Democrats would say the (then proposed) Stimulus didn't work because it was too small and they'd blame the Republicans? Well, I think it's about to come to realization. And thanks to Collins and Snowe, who got snookered into "bargaining" with the Democrats to shave off over $100B in the Stimulus package, the Democrats have the Republicans to blame for the failed Stimulus. Nobody thinks that if the stimulus resulted in +2% more unemployment than predicted that a mere 13% more would have resulted in less unemployment. It'll make libs feel better and give them a talking point. That's about it. Posted by: AmishDude at November 18, 2009 08:32 PM (T0NGe) 15

It's very interesting when the poll question is about a specific promise that Obama made, an issue that he gave particular prominence, and independents rate him as doing worse than Bush on that issue. By making it an issue in his campaign, Obama gave voters the impression that openness and transparency are very important in the way the government works, and so set himself up to be measured on his performance on that issue.
There's a lot of similar issues: Afghanistan, for one, and jobs, for another. Obama told the independents that he would do better than McCain and way, way better than Bush on those issues. It's heartening to see that those independents are holding him accountable (at least in polling) for his failures on his specific promises. Posted by: stuiec at November 18, 2009 08:33 PM (Uhh69) 19
Obama has been an unmitigated failure in everything he has done.
Porkulus failed. Health care is such an epic failure even his own party is afraid to pass it. He's angered our allies. He's emboldened our enemies. He's dithered on Afghanistan Seriously - if people had known in November 2008 what they know now, Obama would have gotten 30% of the vote. It isn't a surprise to see the populace turning on him... Posted by: Bill Clinton at November 18, 2009 08:33 PM (bgcml) 20
I resent your use of the term "dither..." to describe Obama. Dithering implies way more action/movement than the President does. Way more!

You forgot the Cash For Clunkers failure. And the Toxic Assets scheme to save the commercial and residential property market -- failure. Oh, and Obama ruined the $, no small feat, that. Posted by: ikilledamanwithatrident at November 18, 2009 08:36 PM (6wUpV) 22

Another problem with the polls is that sometimes the group doing the poll is attempting to force a result by the nature of the choice of answers available. For example, I was polled prior to the November '08 election. One of the questions was something like "Which candidate do you believe will bring change?" The only allowable answer was either Obama or McCain. However, the poll would not not allow me to give the answer that the changes that Obama was bringing would be a disaster. Now, after almost a year of Hope-n-Changetm, intellectually honest folk see an Epic Fail coming with the Obama administration. We are well on the way to a depression and all of Obama's policies are harmful to economic growth.

So this is just further confirmation that most Independents are unthinking idiots. One does not have to have a finely honed bullshit detector to see through Obama's in the '08 campaign. One only had to do the most cursory digging into the man's record and background, despite how few details were provided about either. I'm a knuckle dragging cave-man, but I know when I'm lied to. Obama spoke only in gassy platitudes on the stump, and when pressed for details, he either gave himself away (Joe the Plumber) or said things that he never had any intention of doing (middle class tax cut). Pointless. The true cult is about 40%. If you bet much lower than that, what you're betting is that some unbelievably bad event will occur and the media won't successfully reassure the cult that only Obama's presence as Leader prevented worldwide apocalypse. Press reaction to a recent unusually murderous event suggests that's not action you want in on. They'd have made that one knock 25 points off Bush. Today, Joe Biden escaped from his "home". I found him in our attic, wearing a nightie, and surrounded by
28 packs of green Jello. When I asked him why he left the "home", he said
it was because they only gave him red Jello.
This might explain the demo derbies his motorcade has been getting into. It stopped being funny when someone died though. Posted by: Blue Hen at November 18, 2009 09:33 PM (1O93r) 107

From the very earliest time, Obama's rhetoric reminded me of someone, but I couldn't remember who. Then, not long ago, it hit me: Willy Loman, the schmuck from Death of a Salesman. To Willie, of all things in life, being "well-liked" is the most important thing. In other words, what other people think of you is vastly more important than what you think of yourself. "He's liked," Willy says of his neighbor Charlie, "but he's not well-liked." The irony of course is that Willy is not well-liked but is in fact largely perceived (accurately) as a blow-hard and a buffoon. Arthur Miller obviously intended Death of a Salesman to be an indictment of the capitalist system, but what he did instead was to ruthlessly parody the kind of man Miller himself no doubt admired: an empty, spiritless shell of a man who lived only for the admiration and approval of other people. A pathetic, deluded, doomed fool. Ladies and Gentlemen: President Willie Loman. (I guess that makes Joe Biden "Biff". I wonder if he whistles in the elevator.)

And for American Jews? They claimed they thought that Obama would be better for Israel. Jews need to jump onto the conservative wagon. Remember about ten years ago when anti-Israel protests were forming on college campuses all over. And a totally spontaneous anti-protest in favor of Israel formed. That was beautiful. Because it was pretty much all conservative Christians. And they even had black t-shirts with some saying, iirc. The Christians were saying, "Dude. Don't fuck with Israel. Really. I mean it." (Then those idiots Robertson and Falwell tried to put their stamp on the spontaneous movement with a full page ad in the NYT. That pissed me off. Cute, but impractical - I loved the look of these Nike Duck shoes and completely bought into the name snow "joggers", as I go on long walk/jogs with my dog every day, and needed something suitable for the winter months. The first thing I noticed about this cheap Nike Duck shoe was that on the Zappos site, the only size available was 8/8.5, which I assumed meant the shoe ran in whole sizes only. When they arrived, the actual shoe was marked 8.5, and they were definitely too big, though I kept them because I figured I would just double-sock it to make them fit better. I wore them for a snow-walk through the state park nearby soon after getting them, and was disappointed at the ankle support, which is non-existent. The top of the boot ends just below the bottom of the calf, and the velcro closure doesn't fit around tight enough. I am NOT thin by any stretch of the imagination (size 14 dress), and at their tightest, the boots are too big around the ankle. The plus side of these is that even after an hour long hike in a foot of snow, my feet were dry and warm. Since then, however, I noticed that the patent is cracked in a few places, which might let wetness in. That said, if you are wanting these for style rather than functionality, they're great. I always get stares and nice compliments (and often Napolean Dynamite references) when wearing these, and I LOVE how they look with a pair of thick leggings underneath. Next winter, I will definitely buy a more functional pair of shoes with which I can be active in the snow and cold, but I'll never get rid of these adorable Nike Dunk discount shoes, all complaints aside.
