DrewM. On the Scene at Hoffman HQ

hoffmanhqcutdown.jpg
Pulling up the headquarters. Pick by DrewM.

DrewM. At the Hotel: Not his hotel, the hotel where the campaign staff has moved to await the vote tallies -- and hopefully the concession speech of Owens.

Exit Polls! More casting votes to oppose Obama than for him (barely); most important issues in NJ seems to favor Republicans (economy, taxes, corruption; health care comes in fourth. Update at Allah.

Meantime, Drew just sent me a new vid.

New Vids: Hoffman on the Tea-Party Movement.

DrewM really went beyond the call of duty to smuggle himself into Hoffman's headquarters.

He has no updates yet, but I'll let you know when he does.

Update: Drew spoke to Rob Ryan, who identifies himself as the press guy for the campaign. Turnout is strong in the areas they want it to be, down by Syracuse and other blue collar areas. After work, it has been picking up, and it had already been solid.

Putting a lot of faith in independents, based on polls.

The mood is upbeat, but still determined and businesslike. They are not acting as if this is in the bag, nor telegraphing confidence that they have this in the bag.

Getting a lot of calls from around the country from conservative activists who have supported him. One guy in Pennsylvania promises he'll be putting up a billboard hailing the defeat of the socialist in New York. One guy drove in from Vermont and has been working the phones all day.

I always liked when reporters would report the mood of a headquarters, usually in a wink-wink way of revealing what the embargoed exit poll data said. I pressed Drew to tell me the Hoffman camp was "confident" but he preferred upbeat, determined, and businesslike. Drat. I wanted that "confident" quote.

The Candidate Enters: The previous vid from Drew.

And Hoffman speaks to the press:

Showing my utter ignorance here, Rum is NY 23 the district you are in now? I confess to not having paid much attention to where exactly NY 23 is. I can barely keep track of our districts here in Washington State.

True story, in the last election I was all set to vote for a certain candidate, I was excited to vote for unnamed candidate. I opened my ballot, prepared to vote for that candidate, only to discover I wasn't actually in Candidate X's congressional district. Oops. Instead I voted for the unpopular candidate in my district out of spite.

Alpha Antivirus is NOT on the up and up.  If given the chance, it will install itself on your system, and frequently warn you of non existent threats, and offer you the chance to pay some money to make those threats go away.  I've had the same thing happen on Instapundit.com, and several other sites recently.  Switching to Firefox stopped them.

If you do get the popup, hit ctrl alt delete, open the task manager, and kill explorer.

71 The real concern is the cheating that will occur in 2010, the cheating that will be implicit in the census and its allocation of many new democrat districts (deleting red districts).

The GOP failed to address this from 1994 to 2006.  Why?  They might never have a chance to fix it again.  When will the GOP get the Senate back?  It only takes a few years for population changes to really make that difficult.  If we ever get the full congress back, we MUST make it much harder to cheat in elections, census taking, redistricting.  Tom Delay thought it more expedient to just try his own version of cheating... what a total idiot.  It made him look good for a little while, but in the long term, we missed the chance to enact a huge reform that would have been difficult to undo.

No worries about the ignorance though. I still have no idea what district I was in when I lived in LA. I knew who my congressman was only when I opened up my ballot.

216 OMG, the vote in VA is 65/35 in favor of McDonnel, per Fox News, so far. It's just total, decimation of the Democrats.

Those returns reflect the vote of two sheep and one wolf.  Let's not start [quoting Harvey Keitel] just yet, gentlemen.

Chrissy: The country is clearly becoming more racist and less enlightened

How is that possible? Our supreme leader was supposed to lead us out of the darkness and into the light. We should all have achieved at least the 7th level of enlightenment by now. We should be color blind, we should be linking our arms together and singing in perfect harmony with the rest of the world.

How could it all have gone so horribly wrong?

228 Ben--

I am not saying McDonell will lose, he won't, but it will be closer.

This is rubbish. Virginia's most populated cities, save Arlington, are all conservative or at least right-leaning. Roanoke, Richmond and Virginia Beach/Norfolk/Hampton Roads area are all solidly conservative. The only area to worry about is northern Virginia, which is suburban sprawl from D.C., with a lot of liberal refugees of the District.

There are no Clevelands or Detroits where votes can hide shoeboxes kept by ACORN volunteers.

i agree with your assessment concerning the majority of virginny's urban areas, the point i was trying to make was that all elections seem like they are going republican big time early on. that is because rural areas that are overwhelmingly conservative turn in their votes first. less votes, less work, easier to get in on time. The cities take more time. So the numbers will get closer. I think McDonnell will win by 13-15, but he is not going to win by a 2-1 margin.

I am just saying don't let the early numbers fool you, wait til the citites report and you will get a better idea of what the final numbers will look like.

274 This is an absolutely disgusting display of nastiness.  Look at Hoffman mashing on the ladies and gladhanding the men like some good old boys club.  And the fact that he is crediting the teabaggers for his success.  It's absolutely shameful.  Good luck NY-23, you're on the verge of electing a stooge of the insurance companies.  If the public option and health care reform don't pass, people in your district are going to die.  I hope you can live with yourselves.  Sniff!
