Would love to know the actual, real way people would vote today across the nation. If Christie somehow defeats Corzine, that will be very telling; Deeds losing...not so much. Hoffman winning in NY-23 would be the biggest WOW.

President Obama is golfing at Ft. Belvoir today with Melody Barnes, the director of the White House Domestic Policy Council. This is the president's 24th round of golf since his inauguration, according to the meticulous records of CBS News' Mark Knoller. And, interestingly, it's the first time the president has played with a woman.

I suspect Lockyer has been forced by now to start walking some of this back. If not, wow, what a political indictment of your own party. Particularly the "Republicans know more about spending money efficiently" (or something along that line). Every Republican candidate for California House and Senate ought to include snippets of this in every campaign commercial they run this next cycle.
Posted by: Mallamutt at October 26, 2009 10:14 AM (V9SYy) 11
Well, his political career is over. Because telling politicians that THEY are the problem just isn't going to get him anywhere. And the fact that he is correct just doubly damns him.

"Small government" isn't just a kneejerk rallying cry of the disaffected conservative. There's a point to it. Governments, by their nature, are eaters. They only consume; they don't produce. Now, this consumption to a certain point is good and necessary: maintenance of a standing army, maintenance and upkeep of critical infrastructure, policing, etc. But There is a tipping point where government becomes an insatiable Leviathan, eating and eating and eating until there's nothing left but its own body. Then it begins to eat that too, until becomes too weak to defend itself and is consumed by something else.

They only consume; they don't produce.
There are some ways in which they provide support. I believe that government is better at providing infrastructure. Government agencies often fail to see that they are not the main show. Build the highways and let commerce flow. Build the interwebz and let morons type. It is a byproduct, sort of like using manure as fertilizer. One doesn't feed pigs for manure, but don't let it go to waste. OK, that analogy sucked, but the government reminds me of pig shit. Posted by: fluffy at October 26, 2009 10:32 AM (4Kl5M) 35

@22 Posted by: Monty at October 26, 2009 10:23 AM (4Pleu) - Once again, I have to agree about 99% with ya Monty. Now if you'd have said maintenance of a standing army navy, air force and stratigic defense that are head and shoulders above everyone else along with an organized militia that is "well regulated" (well equipped and well trained), ding, ding, ding. I kind of just go along with the founders on the dangers of having a standing army. Of course, I'm probably wrong. Have a great day man. Posted by: teej at October 26, 2009 10:34 AM (QdUKm) 37

But our winner tonight, annoymouse poster Rewrite at some blog called the Ace of Spades Headquarter. Rewrite had the audacity to mock our very own Andrea Mitchell. Look, rewrite, I understand, not everyone could go to an Ivy League school like Andrea and myself did. But to mock the work done here at the People's Glorious Network while we tirelessly promote, errr, report on the great works of the King Lord Obama is pointless. That is why conservatives are a dying bread. Oh, I am sure Boss Limbaugh told you to do that. You were probably encouraged by Bill O to mock Andrea. What has Andrea ever done to you, other than to describe, in breathtaking details, the great works and couragous stances our Dear Leader, Barack the I, has taken. Like the couragous stance he has taken on Afghanistan, but not taking a stance. He stopped making decisions. Isn't what you race hating, teabagging conservatives were applading that fool Lockyer for. Lockyer said stop it, so Exalted Leader Obama stopped making decisions on Afghanistan and Iraq, yet you still complain. Nothing ever makes people like you happy Rewrite. Shame. Lockyear WON'T be apologizing for this. I'm pretty sure that the Legislature is one of the most despised structures in all of California. And it's equally despised by ALL of the political spectrum.
What he should do is ride this horse all the way to the barn and hopefully prevent any of the 'usual suspects' from becoming the next Governor. Had Arnold not been revealed as such a moral/intellectual coward, he might have been a good Governor. As it is he ranks somewhere below Gray Davis. WAY below Davis. In certain environments, you simply can't lead if you above all want to be re-elected or to be 'popular'. Sometimes you really have to just 'damn the torpedoes' and go for the gusto. If you sink --- you sink. But if you don't ----- then you get things done. Then you are remembered. Arnold should have said that if the problems were not going to be fixed or frankly even addressed that he was outa there. And he should have said that from day 1 and followed up on it. Better to bail out in a legitimate flurry of denunciation of the losers than to survive by becoming a complete loser yourself. Much better. Posted by: Dougf at October 26, 2009 10:50 AM (16GPT) 57

I'm liking "Just Stop It" as a theme for 2010. "Just Stop Currency Devaluation", "Just Stop Gov't Takeovers of Private Industries". Pity the Republicans probably won't use an obvious give-me in campaign commericals... A bit OT, but did anyone see this? Gadhafi: Let the Palestinians develop nuclear weapons. Add that with Iran's continued stalling as well as the news that Turkey probably won't give even lip-service to being an ally of Israel and one senses a giant mess up on the horizon, not even counting all the domestic garbage. Alas, in the end, there will be only chaos. Posted by: Kratos (on the back of Gaia, scaling Mt Olympus) at October 26, 2009 10:51 AM (9hSKh) 59
ESPN/ABC college football analyst Bob Griese, however, brought a reminder that one thing remains banned in mainstream TV sports — any refer to race or ethnicity. During ABC's Ohio State-Minnesota football game Saturday, there was an on-air promotion for the network's NASCAR coverage Sunday that included a reference to Colombian driver Juan Pablo Montoya not being among the top five drivers in the NASCAR standings. Which led to Griese saying Montoya isn't in that top five because "he's out having a taco." [But not a Black Taco!] USA Today Posted by: Rewrite! at October 26, 2009 10:51 AM (UaSIe) 60

Now, this consumption to a certain point is good and necessary:
maintenance of a standing army, maintenance and upkeep of critical
infrastructure, policing, etc.
In my (notso) humble opinion, that's the source of the frustration and anger for many voters. The ancillary social services stuff is now perceived as being more important than the armed forces, bridges, road, etc. Hell, I live in PA, home of the worst roads in the country. I've said for years that there better be massive corruption going on with PennDot because the money sure as hell isn't making the roads any better. The tolls recently more than doubled for parts of the turnpike and people flipped out because where the hell is the money going. Same thing on the federal level, people aren't seeing baseline matters being completed. Then the voters are supposed to accept that somehow providing job training for hairdressers is more important than, idk, keeping the electrical grid working. That tends to tick people right the hell off. Posted by: alexthechick at October 26, 2009 11:31 AM (8WZWv) Posted by: Turista con Montezuma's Revenge at October 26, 2009 11:31 AM (M34RW) 110

President Obama is golfing at Ft. Belvoir today with Melody Barnes, the director of the White House Domestic Policy Council. This is the president's 24th round of golf since his inauguration, according to the meticulous records of CBS News' Mark Knoller. And, interestingly, it's the first time the president has played with a woman I've played that many rounds since the inaguration but then I've taken care of my chores beforehand. Posted by: alexthechick at October 26, 2009 11:31 AM (8WZWv) Biggest issue in this country is infrastructure. Sewage and water systems designed to last for 30 yrs are now 100+ years old. Bridges are rotting away (see Minneapolis), the watermelons are keeping us from creating new landfills, etc. And there's no money to pay for it because it doesn't buy votes like handing out your "stash" in Detroit or paying for some cockholster to take pictures of crucifixes in a jar of piss. Lockyer is one of the worst Democratic party demagogs anywhere. When he was attorney general, he went to California gun shows and his minions purchased things like de-militarized (cut so it’s impossible use or repair them) military surplus weapons, loaded a table with them and held a press conference to show “what people could buy” at gun shows. Not mentioning, of course, that the “weapons” were unusable. His fiscal “come to Jesus” talk is obviously in response to his soon to be election demise. His job isn’t subject to the gerrymandering that has placed the state solidly in Democratic hands and he’s obviously gettin nervous. Posted by: K at October 26, 2009 01:12 PM (0byh7) 134
Can we send this guy to sit in on every Obama metting until 2012? Maybe we could accually get something (intelligent) done in Washington. I know that is a very big job for one man.
Posted by: John at October 26, 2009 01:53 PM (bvaOU) 135
133 K - I feel your pain but dont kid yourself about Bill Lockyer's electability statewide. He is of course quite blue and from the Bay Area...the blue-est of the blue. But he has never lost an election in his career, and when he runs for re-election as Treasurer next year he will win again in a landslide. After that tho he is prolly done coz he's termed out of the STO and has already been Senate Majority Leader and a 2-term Attorney General. If Meg Whitman beats Jerry Brown he might challenge her in 2012. And as liberal as he is, Lockeyer is capable of moments like the one we saw on TV just now in this clip. To me he is a Benjamin Butler type of guy, and any AoS Morons who follow the Civil War will know what that means: a political general who was a disaster as a military commander but also a guy who stumbled forward however unwittingly into some groundbreaking stuff. If after being termed out as Treasurer he still wants to stay in elective office, he would prolly run for the Senate seat about to be vacated by DiFi in 2012, when she will be 40 billion years old. I dont see her running again for another 6-year term when she will be in her 80's. I just dont. So, yes, Lockyer is a flaming lib and has taken more than his share of GOP scalps over time. But he is capable of sometimes seeing the forest for the trees, and is no Maxine Waters or even a Baabs Boxer. Posted by: mike d at October 26, 2009 02:29 PM (91OXS) 136
