| FY 2009 Federal Deficit Terrifyingly HugeThe Obama administration said Friday the deficit for the fiscal year just ended was $1.4 trillion, the largest relative to the size of the economy since 1945, underscoring the challenge to shrink the fiscal gap even as the White House and Congress consider further steps to stimulate a slow recovery. The final tally for fiscal 2009, which ended Sept. 30, was nearly $1 trillion greater than the $459 billion deficit for fiscal 2008. This year’s deficit translates to nearly 10 percent of the size of the economy, up from 3.2 percent of gross domestic product for last year’s deficit, according to a joint statement from the Treasury Department and the Office of Management and Budget. We are just so screwed it's not even funny. Government spending last year jumped to $3.52 trillion, up 18.2 percent over 2008. The $700 billion financial bailout fund and increased spending and tax relief from the $787 billion economic stimulus program that Obama pushed through Congress in February drove the increase. For September, a month when the government usually records surpluses, the deficit totaled $46.6 billion. That's a sharp contrast to the $45.7 billion surplus in September 2008, the last time the government's books were in the black. In issuing the final budget figures, top administration officials said the president was determined to get control of the deficits in coming years. "It was critical that we acted to bring the economy back from the brink earlier this year," White House budget director Peter Orszag said in a statement. "The president recognizes that we need to put the nation back on a fiscally sustainable path."That's a little like resuscitating a guy who had a heart attack on the way to his execution. Yeah, he's alive but for how much longer? When confronted with something this unsustainable there's only two things to be done. 1- Spend untold trillions more taking over the nation's health insurance system. and 2- Blame Bush. You have called me, Methos, and here I am. This deficit explosion means that truly, in the end, there will be only chaos. Seriously, as big as the deficit is now, this is only the beginning. Once the tens of trillions of unfunded liabilities in all government sectors start rolling in during the next few years, the scope of this slow-moving-now, but gaining-momentum fiscal disaster will be legendary. And I don't think there's a blessed thing we can do about it now, save cut spending to almost nil now. Math question:
$700b (TARP) + $787b (Stimulus/campaign payback fund) >$1.4t deficit So if Bush hadn't gotten suckered by TARP and the Stimulus hadn't been done, this year's budget (which would have been passed, then signed by Bush) would have been balanced? I saw a clip of Obama in New Orleans, speaking to an audience that loved him. Someone asked a question about getting more money from the government. Illustrates the mentality of some who are going to be pretty pissed if things get any worse and money stops flowing. Posted by: Who Knows at October 16, 2009 06:03 PM (0aQsc) 38

GregInSeattle .. It's interesting is it not, that in all the blather, bloviating, fabricating ad nauseum regarding "Obamacare" no one, absolutely no one has brought up the fact that it is unconstitutional from the git go. Nowhere in Article 1, Section 8 will you find any permission for Congress/Government to provide health/medical care in any form. In fact, much of what has already been done by the current Administration, is unconstitutional. The government is not allowed to disburse funds from the treasury for special interests, businesses etc. Dear Leader has no authority to dictate what a corporation is supposed to do with their current CEO and the list could go on. The GOP are predictably silent on the issue. So we now have a de facto one party system and a Dear Leader with his own Politburo. Does any of that sound familiar? Anybody? No one is going into camps. No one will be rounded up. This is unnecessary. People will merely have to settle for a much, much more limited standard of living. Your son in 2045 will marvel that you were able to get a knee replacement in 2004 without waiting 18 months. In fact he won't believe you when you tell him you put it off because you didn't want the down time. Your son won't have any college tuition savings, but that won't matter because the substandard education at the State Creche will be subsidized, and it will be worth little anyway. He'll have to learn Mandarin from an old Chinese, paid for by fixing his plumbing. With Mandarin under his belt, he can get the job in the State Carbon Reduction Waste Plant, run by Chinese engineers hired from Beijing. Engineers from the US haven't proved to be very reliable workers, or well-trained.
When he goes to work, on the soybean oil-powered community bus, while standing for ninety minutes he will think how you must be senile and fantasizing in your dotage, when you told him how you used to be able to take overseas vacations once a year or two... you, a mere middle-class family man. How you used to be able to eat at restaurants occasionally, and just eat what you liked. As if food and drink were never things to be strictly regulated at all times. How unsafe! And he really will roll his eyes when he says people could actually use tobacco... out of doors! Yes, the future is a grand adventure. And we're all bozos on this bus. Obama's whole plan from the start was to be the anti-Reagan (or as he put it "blow up everything Reagan did" ) and instead of starving the govt. blow it up so that massive (and I mean MASSIVE) tax increases are warranted. Which of course means more money (and control) from the Feds. None of this should surprise anyone that paid any attn. from 2007 on with this guy. I still say that he's trying to crash the economy on purpose so as to come in and "rescue" our sorry asses. none of his policies make any sense if he's really interested in bring UE down.

Posted by: volfan at October 16, 2009 06:50 PM (lF49h) My view of The Precedent's intentions is much worse than that. He just wants to exact revenge on us and the West. He feels that we have shamed his people (the third world), through our creativity, productivity, wealth, and general overachievement, and he is the avenging angel, come to bring us pain and reduce us to a smoldering ember. I don't think his desires go far beyond this. He doesn't care about redistributing money, he only wants to punish the rich and successful - cut them down to size, as it were. He doesn't care about what governs this nation; he just wants us to suffer terribly. If he ends up in control of something, he'd like that, but I don't see it as his goal. The Precedent is a political suicide bomber who is perfectly happy to blow himself to bits, so long as he does great damage to our nation in the process. That, so far as I can see, is all that he really cares about. Posted by: progressoverpeace at October 16, 2009 06:56 PM (A46hP) 134

Barry isn't some closet Marxist. Not in the sense that he keeps a Little Red Book under his pillow and has hammer-n-sickle underwear. He is merely the apotheosis of the collectivist, leftard, unconstrained vision that dominates his true birthplace, the groves of Academe. He doesn't really dream of a red flag flying over the Capitol Dome. But he does think "From each according to his ability, to each according to his need" is the germ of an indispensable dogma. He doesn't long for a Komsomol or a Red Army Choir to sing his praises, but he does think a society that is monitored and subject to organized control of its every part is necessary to ensure that everything is "equal" and "fair." After all, we can't let people do anything they want, right?
Barry looks at an ant colony and sees a marvel of nature's organization and thinks "Surely we can be as efficient as the humble ant? Don't we owe The Children/The Disaffected/History/Gaia that much?" We look at an ant colony and see... ants. Whose vision is the more distorted? Posted by: George Orwell at October 16, 2009 07:07 PM (AZGON) 154

Posted by: CDR M at October 16, 2009 06:08 PM From what I have researched, Dubya and the GOP were pushing for reform of Fannie/Freddie as early as 2001. They pushed for it 2-3 times after that as well. Every time they were blocked by Democrats and ACORN and told that their efforts were racist. Dubya is partly to blame for not vetoing TARP and the bailouts, but those were pretty much all Democrat bills. Also, as Rush points out every time Obama goes on his "the failed policies of the last 8 years" bullshit whine-fest, Obama voted for every single one of those bills (TARP and bailouts). Dubya also left it up to Obama whether or not to have Dubya sign the 2nd half of the bailout money (recall the $800 Billion, or whatever it was, was divided in two portions, one which went into effect immediately and the other which would be put into effect later, if needed. Obama endorsed Bush releasing the rest of those funds. So when Obama can point to anything he did differently over the past 8 years, then he can claim to be "cleaning up their mess". It was HIS mess and the mess of his fellow Democrats in Congress. I tire of this asshole (Obama) claiming no responsibility for the mess we are in now and pushing it onto GOP policies, which were working until the Democrats f'ed it all up starting in 2007 (and prior to that with their blocking Fannie/Freddie reform and helping/encouraging ACORN with their shakedowns). How much is a Trillion? Art Cashin via "The Virginian": “Would you like a million dollars?” “I sure would, sir!”, I replied anxiously. “Then just put aside $500 every week for the next 40 years.” I have never forgotten that a million dollars is enough to pay you $500 per week for 40 years (and that’s without benefit of interest). To get a billion dollars you would have to set aside $500,000 dollars per week for 40 years. And a…..trillion that would require $500 million every week for 40 years. Even with these examples, the enormity is difficult to grasp. Posted by: OCBill at October 16, 2009 07:13 PM (WGXy4) 166

I'd agree with that to the extent that his ultimate goal is to diminish us to such an extent that out standing is "equitable" to the rest of the world. But before he can destroy us he must control us, which he's been doing a pretty good job of so far (anyone see the pay czar strip BoFA's CEO Lewis of his salary this year (yeah, retroactively too) - scary stuff). So, what's the tipping point folks? His plans will work if he proceeds unopposed. But I get the sense that he may self-destruct if he has enough opposition to said plans; which has to be why he's rushing all of this through; either that of he knows that he's soon to be a political eunuch in the coming months/years with the economic shite storm that he's ushering in. I agree completely. I believe Soros supports him for his own ends, probably having speculated on the devaluing of the dollar. But Obama doesn't care about that. As you said, he is about the destruction of this nation. Every single decision and action he has made since January 20 has been the worst possible for the future of this country and her people. Every. Single. One. To predict what will happen in the next year and a half, just imagine a crisis and then choose the worst thing to do in that situation; that will be what Obama does. He wants us all to suffer terribly. I think the term "political suicide bomber" is quite apt. I am going to post your comments on a private thread I frequent, with credit to you. I am in 100% agreement on that, as the little political philosophy that can actually fit into the Precedent's pea-brain makes him a die hard staticist, which leads to the idea that all things can be centralized. In addition, his power-hungry nature makes him desire to hold the reins of all power. To me, that is just the surface - something to pass time and make it look. My post was more about what I htink he is really working towards and his much deeper motivations. And I would just add that I don't think he wants us to equalize ... he wants us to suffer.

"And I would just add that I don't think he wants us to equalize ... he wants us to suffer." POP, Your posts are the best - keep 'em coming. I don't disagree that he wants us (meaning non-marxists) to suffer and that his policies are meant to destroy, not build, our nation. I guess that's it's tough to get your mind around the fact that our current leaders' mission is to diminish us rather than make us stronger. Our only hope is that Obama is showing signs of losing steam and his true intentions are beliefs are starting to become evident. We really are in uncharted territory. In 1945 when we last had this level of debt relative to GDP, conditions in the world were vastly different. After years of world war, preceded by years of the Great Depression, followed by bombing the stuffins out of the rest of the industrial world, the US was the world's only industrial power, period. Sixteen million men came home from war, started familes, and went to work. The factory jobs supported the tens of millions of little boomers, the US had 6% of the world population but 50% of its industrial output in the 1950's. The economic & political conditions that existed in 1945 do not exist today. It's a brave new world out there. Posted by: Boots at October 16, 2009 10:44 PM (06JTY) 308
Whose idea was it anyway to think we could jsut exist as a country by outsourcing all our manufacturing to other countries and jsut make money by moving money and in service industries? The world may be cheering now, they can taste their victory, but really they will be th losers too. When there are no new drugs or new technology. Sure, they will eventually develop it but, short of the US being so desperate that we sell even that, everyone will lose.

@101: "You're forgetting the Second Amendment. And over 3 billion rounds of private ammo, and climbing." Won't matter, not even in the slightest. Yes, there may be a few small skirmishes, and the odd last stand of an individual or small band, but most will give up without a fight. If they were going to fight, they'd have done it already. If stuff gets really bad, most of the ammo will go unused, although I would expect to see more scenarios where people do their entire family and then themself.

"If stuff gets really bad, most of the ammo will go unused, although I would expect to see more scenarios where people do their entire family and then themself."
Really bad, as in, how? Like, mass starvation, really bad - b/c if that happens only those w/guns will eat - and the Federal govt. might as well be Disneyland insofar as their help in keeping your belly full at the end of the day. And, this may be a stretch here, but we gun owners generally hold our families in high regard, so I wouldn't expect too many of us to go Goebbels on them - only cowards take that path. Americans are many things, but being without courage isn't one of them. Posted by: volfan at October 16, 2009 11:37 PM (lF49h) 311
@310: "I wouldn't expect too many of us to go Goebbels on them - only cowards take that path. Americans are many things, but being without courage isn't one of them." People have already started whacking their families - not hordes of them, but there have been cases alreay. Lose their job, facing the loss of their house, and *bang bang*. In at least one case, it looke the like who family pretty much agreed with the deal. Scary stuff. Some Americans have courage, yes. At this point, I don't know if "most" or even "enough" do. Even if enough do, there isn't much in the way of leadership to coordinate them. The Founding Fathers would already have shredded their vocal cords from screaming "What the fuck are you waiting for?!?!?" though. I'll show you a frightening glimpse into the life of an Obama voter. My friend took me to a "theater benefit" which was really a rent part for a bunch of Pratt brats living in a dirty loft. When my friend and I went downstairs, there was a disconnected washer and dryer with the following note taped to it. Verbatim. Some Sad News About the State of Our Country Dear Tenants - We can no longer offer free wash. It sucks, we know. But at this time, this washing machine costs about $10 EACH WASH. This has to do with the strange way Con Edison charges us for electricity. If we go over a certain amount of usage per month in this whole space, we get an added $200 charge per month. Plus, the cost of energy in the US fluctuates like crazy, so it is entirely unpredictable. One month we get a $300 bill and the next we get an $800 bill for the same usage, and there is no way to know. What we do know is that in the past two months since we have had this machine (especially the dryer) running, we have had nearly double the amount of electricity usage. We want to try to maintain the base charge of $75 per month for gas, electricity and internet service, but we can't do that if we want the following things: Washing machine and dryer Air conditioning Space heaters (except in Becky's room) If you want any of these items, we have to work it out. But at this point, with the cost of these machines out of control, it makes no sense not to use the laundromat down the street. I have disconnected the machine If you want, you can arrange to pay us $10 a wash, but that's crazy. About air conditioners for the summer, we will have to figure out how much it costs and charge accordingly. Anyway, I will post the electricity bills so you can see the problem. If there is a different way of figuring it out, we will. But since Hurricane Katrina happened, energy bills in commercial spaces (which we are due to zoning) are out of control. If you are mad about this (as I am), then we should protest at Con Edison... or piss on Ronald Reagan's goddamn grave. The government doesn't fucking care about you or anyone else trying to get by anymore. They want us to pay for Enron style market based energy politicies (sic) at the expense of our personal hygiene, warmth and general quality of life. Want to hear something scary?
There have been no FDIC bank closures since the first week of October. Do you think that's because there are no failing banks, or because the FDIC has just run out of money? Can't believe this thread is still going. But for what its worth, I believe the FDIC hasn't closed any banks because they need the three year prepaid assessment from them in order to operate. Once paid, cash in hand, then you'll see a spate of closures.
