| Overnight Open Thread: Unfired Ordnance Edition [krakatoa]Genghis has elected to take his semi-decadal day off from his duties here at AoS. So, once again, I have to come up with something that may or may not entertain the late-night trogs in the trenches while a half-dozen chat windows whose fine-print contain some legalese about being over-18 languish unattended. No, no, don't misunderstand. I live for this stuff. Really, I love you people. You remind me of family. Maybe it's the passive-agressive competition for attention. Or perhaps it's the way that you wallow in your own filth. Hmm. That reminds me, I need to visit my folks in the home one of these months. I'm sure they had birthdays sometime in the last year. Enough with all that, and on with the show. Tonight's theme? Unspent loads. Now: Ready on the firing line. Round One: Have I told you the one about the fisherman and the sidewinder? Well, not exactly a sidewinder, which probably chaffs zombie Darwin to no end, as this was a sure thing otherwise.Round Two: Nerds set world record for blue-balls. "We are hoping to set, break and smash Guinness World Records for iconic characters from Daleks to Superheroes. And of course, to continue our epic streak of failure between the sheets." Round Three: Playing fetch with the pooch? It's all fun and games until someone loses a spleen. It'd be funny except for the PTSD suffered by the poor dog: Comments1

Jones- I totally agree. The media is even more guilty IMHO. It is their duty to report the news - all of it. They have power because people trust them. People never trust the President, they should be able to, but they understand sometimes he has to fudge the truth. Reporters on the other hand must tell the entire truth. They do news stories and commentaries all the time about how the GOP is keeping minorities down. I think that the media is mainly responsible. A lot of poor minorities do not get on the net, read anything but their local paper, and trust the main 3 (cuz they're free) to give them the truth. They don't even know that their opinions, based on the 'news' stories, are based on nothing but half truths and down right lies and slander. They don't know there is bias in the media because they have never been shown the other side. Think about it, if they knew that raising the minimum wage was actually going to cost their children jobs, would they support it? What about the truth behind ACORN? What about school vouchures, teacher's unions, etc. Large blocks of minorities would vote differently (eventually) if the new the entire 'news'/truth. Sometimes I wish there was a PAC that was willing to hold meetings, talks, etc., to educate people about the bias. Hell, I'd pay money for a PAC to pass out pamplets that just list examples of their clear bias. Posted by: momma at June 09, 2009 10:28 PM (penCf) 31

Momma a big part of the problem is that in the past, we had 'reporters' who went out and got the who what when where why. Now we have 'journalists' who see it as their duty to 'make a difference'. Of course, they're all coming out of liberal arts or journalism school backgrounds where their brains have been calcified in the leftwing mold. Other than a brutal stalinist purge of all tenured professors in the country, I don't know how you get around that. Posted by: Jones at June 09, 2009 10:34 PM (KOkrW) 46

Betelgeuse is a red supergiant, relatively luminous, and one of the largest stars known. For comparison, if the star were at the center of our solar system its surface might extend out to between the orbits of Mars and Jupiter, wholly engulfing Mercury, Venus, Earth and Mars.

Vampire bats tend to live in colonies in almost completely dark places, such as caves, old wells, hollow trees, and buildings. Colonies can range from a single individual to thousands, often roosting with other species of bat.

I never mentioned anything about legislation so I hope you were being snarky. Kinda... I don't know. Not really. I mean, what else would they do, is my point? That's all I can imagine. PAC's generally lobby, for, y'know, like legislation. Either that or try to get people elected. There's no malice in this post. I'm just saying I don't know what the hell you could do legislatively about media bias accept the fairness doctrine. Nor is the media elected, so... I just would like to find a place that gets people involved somehow - calling radio stations, boycotts, letters to the editors, etc. I hear the boycott thing alot. Good idea in theory. The problem with that is you can't boycott everything. Literally everything. And to boycott the media, you'd pretty much have to. Just take 1 company - NBC/Universal or some such, (owned by GE). SciFi, USA, CNBC, MSNBC, NBC, Universal Studios... Comedy Central? That's without even stopping to ponder. They own bloody everything. Anything that isn't owned by GE is owned by Ted Turner, I think. That's like the law or something. Viacomm fits into this somewhere, I don't know where.... It's gotten to a point where's it's becoming vaguely Japanese with these damn megacorporations. Everyone owns everyone. And then you're gonna say, well, "We won't buy from your advertisers". It'd be so many people you couldn't buy from, you couldn't keep track. You just wouldn't buy anything, just to be safe. Posted by: Entropy at June 09, 2009 11:21 PM (cok/k) Posted by: Tresjin at June 09, 2009 11:21 PM (NvuTo) 118

Spider silk is a remarkably strong material. Its tensile strength is superior to that of high-grade steel, and as strong as Aramid filaments, such as Twaron or Kevlar. Most importantly, spider silk is extremely lightweight: a strand of spider silk long enough to circle the Earth would weigh less than 16 ounces

if you make pasta sauces fresh herbs and the best tomatoes make a big difference, italian cooking is quite simple, it really depends on the best and freshest ingredients available.

Second, nobody knows what's going to happen to that star, or how soon.
Going to happen???? Now, I'm just a blue-collar college dropout, but even I know that we're talking about something that already happened about 600 years ago....it's just taken that long for the light to reach us so we could observe our impending doom. Also, I'll second, or third or fourth those that are saying growing your own herbs is easy. Really, they only need a little space, some light, and some water, and then you can whip up some awesome food and impress teh chicks with both your green thumb and your culinary magic.

I was told not to let my basil platn bloom or leaves get bitter, so if I see buds I pinch them off. Of course sometimes it is hard to tell between the buds and the new leaf growth since I suck at gardening. I love the idea of a garden, just not the work it entails. I really should've been to the manor born as my ideal would be a team of gardeners slaving away so I can flit about in a beautiful garden cutting flowers and having romantic trysts. if you are into spicy foods like i am, fresher, better quality peppers like paprika, cayenne, various chiles make a big difference too. if you have had a really good goulash you know how good paprika is for example. if you just buy ordinary paprika from a grocery store it really lends very little to food, but if you can find a good quality paprika (usually sold in specialty groceries in aluminum pouches) it makes a huge difference, i love a good goulash.

Meanwhile back at the slaughterhouse, S. Korean "fir maker" firm uses the opportunity as their business falls during global economic downturn to pull out of their Kaesong N.Korean industrial complex investment. Various S.Korean mfg. industries invested in the North's border town for cheap labor 40,000. Only one mentions buyers remorse as S.Korean employees stationed North get imprisoned for complaining of working conditions under the North's iron fist. So much for spreading the wealth.
