Oh My Sweet Fancy Moses: Real Yahoo/USNews Headine -- "Obama's Flip-Flops for the Public Good"

Oh, are they? You know, the problem isn't really that he's flip-flopping per se. It's that he lied for corrupt political advantage for two years without the media challenging him on his claims and "positions."

And now that he reverses himself on these positions -- having never really intended to follow-through on them in the first place; just to attack his opponents by staking out fantasy-positions no credible candidate would embrace -- the ObaMedia is now obligated to sell the changes to his liberal base.

His liberal base keeps him afloat, after all. So they will have to be sold a bill of goods. Almost as bad as a bill of goods as the media has been selling the rest off us for 50 years.

So don't worry, liberals and Obama voters! Trust the MSM: All of Obama's broken promises are for your own good.

You were just too dumb and too partisan (or just too dumb, period) for him to give it to you straight before. Now that you let him boink you six ways 'till Sunday, he can 'fess up that he has some light herpes.

But you know you wanted it. If he'd told you the truth, you wouldn't have gotten into bed with him so readily, and that would have been your loss. Because seriously, he's really a god in bed.

In the end, Americans will understand and accept a president who changes course, as long as he does it for the public good or to acknowledge new realities, not for crass partisan reasons or to curry favor with particular interest groups. But there is hell to pay if a president breaks a fundamental promise and can't justify it. Perhaps the best example is George H. W. Bush, who violated his "read my lips--no new taxes" pledge from the 1988 campaign. Partly as a result, Bush lost his re-election bid in 1992.

So far, Obama's shifts have not risen to the level of a fundamental change in his views or a redefinition of his presidency. If Obama can continue to demonstrate his commitment to everyday Americans, and get results, voters probably won't hold either his flexibility or his flip-flops against him.

"New realities." These are of course old realities. But when you reverse your position and break your promises, as you always expected you would, it's helpful to claim that "circumstances have changed."

And so you see here the roll-out of the media campaign of Obama's biggest broken promise yet (which I'm sure powdered-bottoms like this dickbag will deem to not be "fundamental") --

Obama's sudden discovery that "circumstances have changed" and that he will, despite two full years of solemn vows, sadly, reluctantly, have to raise taxes on all but the poorest Americans after all.

And it will all be for the "public good," you understand.

His promise still stands. Minus a zero: No one making under $25,000 per year will pay a single dime in new taxes. Sure, it's a zero different from the old promise, but think about it: A zero is nothing at all, so really, this is not a change at all.

Sometimes you really want it but you don't know you want it, and you need someone to just do it. Ask Guy Cimbalo.

Thanks to TerryN.

PS: Anyone heard the WH promise to not raise taxes since they got elected?

I submit that this promise was made a lot before November 4, 2008 and not a single time since.

In a sense they work for all of us and based on their performance and the mess that they personally have helped get us into, they deserve no less than summary dismissal. Were it only that simple.

The liberals (and that includes the media) have become a parody. This entire political debacle is looking more and more like a situation comedy. The only problem is that with a comedy you expect “everything to come good in the end” even though the nominal hero bungled his way through with a miasma of incompetent actions. On TV there would have been a “wise Latina” to save the day and rescue the bumbler from failure.

Too bad in reality there is no savior and we will all be eating filet of dog soon.

That column just shows how really stupid some people in elections are. In the first place Bush was not running. In the second place, anyone who was not a retard should have known that Il Douche was a uber-liberal (communist) who would call for more taxes and spending and more government control.

Perhaps he will learn to at least open his eyes even if he is too lazy to look at the record.

34 Most of Obama's flipflops (actual...not hypothetical like your tax example) have been against his liberal stances (ie closing gitmo, leaving iraq, torture photoes).

So, yeah Obama did sell us a bill of goods. He was really a conservative Manchurian candidate. He hasn't delivered any of the liberal promises he made during the campaign so far, has been anti-gay marriage, and perhaps even more hawkish than his predecessors with his aggressive infusion of more troops to Afganhistan. He hasn't raised taxes on the rich as he had promised, nor brought universal healthcare. He's continued the George Bush policy of corporate welfare with the stimulus and tarp.

So, you're right, Ace...Obama did lie. He told us he was going to be a liberal president...instead his actions have been perhaps even to the right of the GOP nominee McCain or even his predecessor, Bush.

35 The scales are coming off the eyes.  We mustn't give up hope.

Although having to restrain oneself after reading "I voted for hope," really is a lot to ask of us right now. In an imaginary world without consequences, people that use that excuse should be punched in the throat.

It would really help a bit more if those hope-tools would be a tad more self-critical.

Dear fool--

Spending like a drunken fool and raising taxes on everyone is hardly 'moderation.' It's rampant liberalism-- more power and money for government, less for you, all wealth is government's.  In other words, HE IS THE RADICAL LIBERAL WE SAID HE WAS, from the tax issue to the spending issue to the government control of private industry.

In any case, this story is not about Obama per se, it is about a complicit, adoring media and the lengths they will go to to excuse every lie, excuse every deception that they were incurious about, every sham policy statement that they refused to analyze or review because it didn't serve the purpose of their boy-god-king.

You, SS, can't even muster a rational argument to defend this fool, perhaps you're suffering from the same self-deception that prevents you from ever admitting the abysmal failure you're actively trying to prop up even as he shits on your head.

39 palin steele,

Don't be a fool. Only a brain dead person would think that Obama is anything close to conservative.

And he was anti-gay marriage during his campaign.

He hasn't raised taxes on the rich (or you) yet because the new tax season is not yet upon us. Luckily for us, he couldn't affect our taxes this year.

He promised to send more troops into Afghanistan.

He was never against the stimulus or TARP.

Of course you ignore his takeover of GM and Chrysler, his limiting of CEO pay, and his smearing of America all over the world. Just for starters.

That's not a partisaned statement. I would argue that since the end of Reagan, America has been gradually losing its international clout, under Clinton as well as the Bushes. We need to realize we have to approach leadership with a different tact than in the past. I believe President Obama is taking us on the right direction to restoring America's moral authority in the world. By acknowledging that America is not perfect and has made mistakes in the past, he is lending credibility to its future actions.

Once again, your reading comprehension is an epic fail:

Obama pandered to positions and spouted the propaganda and dogma of our enemies to take a position that advanced his fortunes with Democratic voters.

Do you think his condemnations of Gitmo and Iraq and 'torture' photos weren't music to the ears of Amahdinejad et al?  He took positions that they celebrated, because it benefitted him within his twisted leftist base.

Now that 'he's won,' well, he can take unpopular positions, maybe even think rationally about policy, but he's done the damage-- he's run down America on the world stage as immoral and unlawful and cruel and barbaric.  He's played along with them.

But now, he knows what a crock it was, and isn't going to put HIS neck on the line, no, suddenly all that stuff he railed against is just fine and must continue.  He's an honorless weasel.

98 Liberals always talk about "moral authority". WTF does that even mean?

With moral authority and $1.25 I can get a cold pop from the fucking machine. On a particularly warm day that can be really pleasant.

Let's start with a counter-example:
The Soviet Union exercised lots of authority over vast stretches of real estate. They controlled Eastern Europe, much of SE Asia, much of the Middle East and Northern Africa, Central America and Cuba and Even South America. They were involved in Cold and shooting wars for decades and people dealt with them.

Nobody can argue that the USSR exercised little authority. And their economic system had moral authority when viewed through the eyes of other tyrants and would-be tyrants the world over.

But the USSR was immoral at its base. Their leadership killed tens of millions of people directly and many more indirectly. And they did it all without any moral authority.

So I ask again: What the fuck good is "moral authority" in any measurable, objective way?

104 "So I ask again: What the fuck good is "moral authority" in any measurable, objective way?" - Nom de Blog

The best way I can explain moral authority is to use an example. Do you read comics? If so, I point to exhibit A or moral authority, Captain America.

Captain America would always do the right thing, and by doing so, he inspired his fellow heroes to follow his example. Even though a mere mortal with powers far surpassed by most other superheroes, he LED the Avengers, which included powerhouses such as Hulk and even gods in Hercules and Thor. They all believed in the goodness of Captain America.

The antithesis to Captain America would be Frank Castle, aka Punisher. He also went after bad guys, just as zealously as other heroes. But he had no moral compunctions, for him, the ends justified the means. And while he struck fear in the thugs of the world, he never shone light in the cities he staked out. Citizens feared him just as much as the criminals he fought.

So in conclusion, moral authority is what Captain America represents. It's something that President Obama is bringing back to our great nation.

114 I guess 'Harvard' now offers a PhD in comic books.

So in conclusion, moral authority is what Captain America represents. It's something that President Obama is bringing back to our great nation.

Except when he takes all the positions that would supposedly curry favor with those poor nations of the world and chucks it all in the bin because it would be national (and for him, political) suicide.  What kind of 'moral authority' espouses a position to the world and chucks it in when it's his (political) ass on the line?  Don't you think the America-haters around the world are going to be even a bit miffed at that from the guy who claimed to be on their side?

So....to explain the positions he took, was Obama a naive fool, or a shameless liar in the campaign?

116 And while we're using comic book characters as a basis for discussion (which a serious academic could do, I hold)...

Let's examine when all the anti-hero movies of Bronson and Eastwood did so well. It was the 1970s. That was the last time America's economy sucked and we needed a savior because the system was broken. That's also when we got the ultimate anti-hero of the comics: Wolverine (1974).

Before that the anti-heroes came in the 1930s, in large part. That was again because the system was broken. And we got Batman (1939).

Shane came in the 1950s when actual heroes were in demand. Ditto the movies of the late 1980s. (Die Hard and Lethal Weapon spring to mind.) In both of those periods the government was perceived as working.

Look for a lot more anti-heroes in the movies and soon.

Papa Smurf represents all that is wise and good in the world. He is a gentle smurf, living his smurf by the golden smurf: "Do unto smurfs as you would have smurfs do unto smurf."

His antithesis is Gargamel. Or Azrael. One or the other. I forget. The one who isn't a cat. Anyway, Gargamel/Azreal is also motivated by a purpose, but he will do things Papa Smurf won't, like Enhanced Interrogation Smurfs such as the Belly Smurf, Smurf Deprivation, Loud Smurf, and Watersmurfing.

I hope this explains it.

If it doesn't, I can also offer a Care Bears or My Pretty Pony analogy.

256 I know it's late to the game, but this was linked from on high.

Here's a bit about moral authority from Shelby Steele (from "White Guilt", and paraphrased since I don't feel like looking it up):
"It is our duty to wield moral authority, which is obtained through fidelity to principle."

In his estimation (and mine), moral authority is a recognition by people of sound mind that you are someone whose advice should be heeded. You earn it by sticking to your principles. This, quite clearly, excludes the President, as he has never met a principle he didn't want to toss under the bus.

257 Palin Steele.
If it was a choice between your version of Captain America and the Punisher... I'd take the punisher.

Because Moral Authority is nice... but it can also get a lot of innocent people killed.

Personally, when it comes to superheroes... I'd rather have Rorschach from The Watchmen. Granted, Captain America would be more moral... but with Rorschach... when it comes to having my life on the line... he would do what's necessary...

...And he'll do it without hesitation, without remorse, and without regret.

My favorite scene from the novel was when he enters a prison full of people he arrested. After being threatened with all sorts of horrible ways to die he simply says this:

"None of you understand. I'm not locked up in here with you... you're locked up in here with me."

Captain America would salute my actions for the things I did in my life over my grave.

Rorschach might keep me alive.

When I was created in the laboratory from the DNA of some of history's most clever and charismatic leaders, Barry Obama was still doing coke in college.  So Dr. Mindbender can be forgiven for not stealing a lock of his hair for use in my creation.  Plus, he hadn't seen Obama's pecs.

What 25 years has wrought.  I am now convinced that I cannot match the powers of who some have termed, "The One."  If only a tiny drop of his blood coursed through my veins, perhaps then, oh Cobra Commander, we might prevail in this game of world conquest.  But sir, I am found wanting.  Obama, by simply being, has convinced me that this life of international terrorism and intrigue simply isn't interesting anymore.  Destro is old hat.  It's all so...boring.

Captain America will be played by Brian Dennehy.

"Technocrat"? Are you speaking about his multitudes of teleprompters? Moderate? You mean when he finds out that what he promised is impossible and so turns around and does what Bush did cuz he never had an original thought that would work? "More liberal candidates"? Pray tell who ran in the 2008 election that was even close to as liberal as O?

I'm sure you all recall when the Decepticons jettisoned some of their own injured fighters in order to make the voting bloc more favorable to electing Megatron as their Supreme Leader.

I mean, it was at that point that Osama Bin Laden, Kim Jong-Il, and I realized that the Decepticons had lost their Moral Authority. And it was then and only then that we concluded that Optimus Prime, with full Moral Authority still intact, was the only one who could save us.

277 Time to repeal the 16th amendment.

Perhaps simple tax revolt, they will throw the 60% of American earners who pay some form of federal income tax in jail ?

Barry's whole redistribution plan from the getgo was to take more from the 60 and give to the 40 who pay no federal income tax at all.

This place is insane.

And the creepy thing about this is that a lot of Gen Y and Gen Z skulls full of mush actually believe in comic book foreign policy.

281 1. Every American will pay the hidden tax of inflation. This will affect the poor and minorities disproportionately as necessities cannot be deferred.
2. Every American will pay much higher energy costs due to the Obama regime's hostility to oil drilling, coal and nuclear power. Inflation in this area will be much higher than in others. It will again affect the poor, who will have to choose between heat and food, more than others.
3. Proposed "revenue enhancements" like a VAT are regressive and again hit the poor hardest.

So why does Obama hate poor people?

Then the red and white and the blue'll come through.

Next on the 65th anniversary of D-Day we have a liberal Prime Minister renaming Omaha Beach "OBAMA Beach" in honor of his new #1 buddy and No, I don't believe this prick misspoke.
'Last but not least' we have this "He, She, It" Capt America fucker who give new meaning to the saying "Save a Seal, Club a Fucking Liberal!"

287 Anyone heard the WH promise to not raise taxes since they got elected?

Late I know, but yes. At least once. The Feb 24 address to a joint session of congress.

http://tiny.cc/Q052e (link goes to whitehouse.gov)

(Do a Ctrl-F for the word dime)

"But let me perfectly clear, because I know you’ll hear the same old claims that rolling back these tax breaks means a massive tax increase on the American people: if your family earns less than $250,000 a year, you will not see your taxes increased a single dime. I repeat: not one single dime. In fact, the recovery plan provides a tax cut – that’s right, a tax cut – for 95% of working families. And these checks are on the way."

Note he doesn't say "income taxes" or "payroll taxes" or "tobacco taxes" or "gas taxes" or "carbon taxes." Just "taxes." Weasel out of that one you jug-eared prick.

288 Actually, Obama resembles another Marvel character: The Watcher.

The Watcher was a super smart uy from another dimension who would observe humans in their foibles. but he couldn't interfere, only observe. He was above it all like Obama thinks he's above dead babies in the broom closet at Christ Hospital, or above the struggle between terrorists and America.

There is one big difference between The Watcher and Obama, however;

The Watcher wasn't full of horseshit.
