Meghan McCain Is Not, Strictly Speaking, Very Smart

Once again Ms. McCain has grabbed headlines as the new voice of the Republican Party by running down, wait for it, Republicans.

The big media take away quote from her appearance on The View yesterday was her mention of Karl Rove and Dick Cheney which concluded with "You had your 8 years, go away".

Well, here's what she actually said.

"It's very unprecedented for someone like Karl Rove or Dick Cheney to be criticizing the President. It's very unprecedented, former Vice President and obviously you know Karl Rove...You had your 8 years, go away"

Not just 'unprecedented' but she channeled her inner Demi Moore in a Few Good Men and raised the ante with "very unprecedented"

Let me see if I can go back into the musty history books and find a former Vice President and chief political adviser to a president who criticized the next administration....

Oh here's a pair. Al Gore and James Carville.

Ms. McCain spoke of her Columbia education during the show. Apparently they don't teach ancient American history (or what the word "unprecedented" means) at that fine institution.

Why bother going after this dim bulb? Because she's clearly digging the limelight and the only way she gets to stay in it is by knocking Republicans. Of course she does this while claiming to be one of them and only worried about the future of the party. Pointing out that Gore and Carville knocked Bush doesn't score you sweet network time, does it?

We really have to make it clear we don't need any more McCain mavericks. One has done enough damage to the party.

Oh and Ms. McCain? What political characteristic do Rove and Cheney have in common that your dad doesn't share? Rove and Cheney were part of winning two presidential elections. You can look it up.

More: BTW-Did you know Ms. McCain only became a Republican last year? Here's her blog entry on the subject.

As some of you may know, I have been registered as an Independent since I was 18 years old. However, after careful thought and consideration, I recently decided to change my political party affiliation. This morning, I went to the State Capitol Executive Building in Phoenix with Mom and re-registered as a Republican. I did this as a symbol of my commitment to my dad and to represent the faith I have in his ability to be an effective leader for our country and to grow and strengthen the Republican party when he is elected President of the United States. Happy Father's Day, Dad!

She didn't become a Republican out of principle. She did it as a gift to her dad, which is honestly very sweet but hardly qualifies you to position yourself as the voice of young Republicans. Honestly the 'my daddy is the nominee' is a small cohort the party can do without winning over.

44 We will need a real conservative with the ability to speak after BO ready to start in '12. McCain already demonstrated that playing middle doesn't work. It rarely does. We see example after example of why it doesn't work. Obama is left of the Feinstein and Clinton and got elected. All a liberal Republican does is beclown the party. Reagan was very right wing and won in two landslides. Those that would argue the Reagan years are over are ignorant. We'll be setup nicely for a redo of '80 in '12.

I giggle at the troll in another slide that said BO will won in "another" landslide. Remember, even with the media pushing him and his rock-star like status, he only won with 52%. Now think if we had a real candidate for the nominee.

I've got respect for John McCain for what he did during the war, but afterward he fell into the same trap John Glenn did: he became a political war-horse, more beholden to his cronies on Capitol Hill than he was to the people he nominally represented. He turned into a glory-hound and spotlight-seeker, which is why he cultivated the "Maverick" persona. It made him the center of attention.

Which is why it surprised me when he chose Sarah Palin as his running-mate. Even now I think he was pressured into it, and would have picked someone else if he'd had a free hand. His treatment of her both during and after the campaign was tepid at best, and shameful at worst.

I knew from the moment he was chosen as the GOPs candidate that the 2008 elections were doomed. McCain, whatever his merits as a soldier, is a complete douchebag as a politician.

She says she's pro-life, then segues into thoughts about building a bigger GOP tent, mentions Christie Todd Whitman as an example, but forgets that Whitman is pro-choice who argues that the GOP has to depress its pro-life position to court pro-choice women.

Then she says she's pro gay marriage, but the big tent America is not in favor of gay marriage. They are in favor of same sex civil unions, but not marriage.

The "unprecedented attacks" line is sophomoric at best. Cheney and Rove are the first? Ha. If you started keeping score today they'd be first.

This should be the thing that the GOP would most want to avoid, from a PR standpoint. If they really want to get a message out, I could think of better people to do it. But then, they'd have to get a message, something else I don't see them doing very well.

92 I am really disgusted now with the state of the Republican party. We lost the last election, but instead of sticking together and being a strong united and cohesive opposition, we are fighting amongst ourselves and pointing fingers at each other.
I too think that Meghan is a vacuous air head who does not truly represent Conservatives and Republicans. I don't take her seriously, thus I ignore her just as I do any publicity about the likes of Paris or Britney or whatever bimbo of the month is being foisted upon us by the media.
I do admire John McCain, I wish he had won the nomination at an earlier age when Bush beat him in the primaries. McCain woukd have been a much better president than Bush and the country and the Republican party would both be in better shape now. 100 We really have to make it clear we don't need any more McCain mavericks. One has done enough damage to the party.

The GOP needs every vote it can get. If we keep purging people who don't tow the ideological line that the self proclaimed uber-conservatives we are going to allow Obama to continue to sodomize this country. If these self proclaimed uber-conservatives/mobys/rubes can't be bothered to get off the couch and vote for someone like the McCain (even someone as lame as McCain) to keep someone like goddamn Obama out of office than fuck them.

Does this mean that core principles need to be sacrificed? No, but you do not win elections by alienating people and you do not have any say unless you win elections.

Compare Cheney to Gore and Biden.

McCain was starting to take the lead in the pollsand may well have won, were it not for the financial crisis that emerged. I do think that McCain could have done a better job of exposing who was really at fault for the mess. Bush was a very unpopular president and that made McCain's job much more difficult since his policies were likened to Bush. I think that McCain was just too old to be an effective campaigner, but he would have made a good president and a better one than Bush.

I don't know that McCain let his "people" bash Palin, that is a stupid in it's face, it's not in McCain's character to do that, it was McCain who went out on a limb and selected Palin as his running mate. The criticism from conservatives against Palin came from the elite, upper class twits within the party some of which may have been on McCain's staff. I like Palin, but if she had not done so poorly her early interviews (ie Katie Couric) we would probabaly not have the One in office now.

137 Oh I guess we should have noiminated Huckster or Romney, they were so electable.

I think the basic problem was that none of the GOP candidates mooted were electable. I was a Fred! guy, but he would have lost too. I don't know that the GOP could have put up anyone who could have won in 2008. The war-fatigue and constant liberal media drumbeat made for a very hostile environment. Still, McCain was a notably weak candidate in a very weak field. Palin was the only thing that gave him a chance; without Palin, McCain would have been beaten far worse than he was. (I voted McCain-Palin rather than Ron Paul strictly because of Palin. Ron Paul may be a nut, but at least he's not a smarmy self-congratulatory "centrist" as McCain is. I find Paul's nuttiness rather endearing. I bet he makes his own pants.)

If you're voting strictly on "electability" rather than on core principles, then I must confess that I part ways with you. I'd rather vote for the right reasons and lose than vote for the wrong reasons and win. It's just not in my nature to do it any other way.

145 Actually, Joan McCain didn't pick Palin. He agreed to Palin. Originally it was Bill Krystal and Fred Barnes who met Sarah 2 yrs ago on their yearly cruise with Weekly Standard. They did Alaska. They met her then, and then they proposed her to Mc. It just so happened that one of his lawyers had worked with Sarah, and helped vet/push her. He didn''t want her, but was told it was a bold risk, and he said that they should have never told him that, he liked to take risks. McCain has been a flop politically for the Republican party from day 1. He has nothing except his war service. Well, so does Colin Powell, and people wanted him to run at one time. Think that that Rino/Dem would have been a good choice? NO. McCain was going to be a part of the Dem ticket not too many yrs back, remember? He is not, and never has been a Conservative. No way would he have been better than Bush. Bush had faults with his compassionate conservatism crap and let the Dems spend too much money so he could fund the war and have his way there. It hurt, but when you lose, either party is in dissarray. There's infighting. There's no clear leader. You have to break it down to it's core to build it back up better. The Dems were completely demoralized just a few short yrs ago, remember? Now is the best time to purge the Rinos, we don't need a "big tent" we just need to explain conservatism to everyone, and as it is obviously the best choice, if it is stated well enough, people will go for it. Every time. The big thing is quit seeing people as groups, like blacks, or gays, or mexicans. JUST SEE AMERICANS. That's it. I can remember times when the party was in way, way worse shape than it is now. Just be cool, things have a way of swinging back when the general populace gets tired of one party or another anyway. We need good leaders. End of Story.

147 joan:

I don't think in terms of "electability" because it's a sure road to being disappointed in the final result. I'm not nave enough to think that a "good man, strong and true" will step forward any time soon -- American politics is simply too toxic for a truly worthwhile candidate to emerge. At this point I am simply satisfied to have someone who can play political hardball, hew to a small-government pro-business domestic policy, and put foot to ass overseas if it's called for. Sarah Palin would, I think, have filled this bill admirably.

I also become more Federalist as I get older. States have been deferring far too much to Washington in the wake of the civil-rights era, and I think it's time for the pendulum to swing back to states' rights. If the battle against statism is to be won, it's going to be won by Southern, Midwestern, and Western governors who tell Bammer to sit'n'spin.

I don't think so. McCain was notably lukewarm to Palin during the whole campaign. I thought then and I think now that his advisers basically jawboned him into nominating Palin (probably to placate all us gun-totin' bible-thumpin' knuckledraggers out in the sticks). All you had to do was listen to McCain on domestic issues -- immigration, taxes, and the size of the federal government -- to realize that he was singing from an entirely different hymnal than Palin was. His support for her in the wake of media attacks was tepid even by McCain's standards, and when it became clear that he was going to lose the election he didn't so much blame Palin as he did excuse others for doing so.

Joan, I'm not saying McCain's a bad guy. I did vote for him, after all. But I did so with gritted teeth, telling myself that even a grandstanding political hack was better than Bammer. I stand by that, but I'm not going to deify the guy either. He was the author of most of his own miseries, and if he's the best the GOP can offer than maybe the GOP deserves to get beat. You aren't going to beat the Democrats by being Democrat-lite.

This clarifies why McCain picked Palin. If McCain was picking a candidate to match his values, he would have picked someone like Lieberman. If he didn't pick Palin based on her beliefs, then that means he either picked her because she was a woman (needed a minority to counterbalance), or because he needed to shore up his base. Either reason shows why he shouldn't have been the nominee for the top of the ticket in the first place.Whatever his reasons, what happened after he picked her should show why picking this RINO was a bad idea. Because she was an actual conservative, his ratings skyrocketed. She drew huge crowds compared to him. The left immediately started attacking her because they knew she was dangerous.I think alot of people recognized this. I saw many a bumper sticker with the top lopped off, and many a t-shirt "Palin! (and that other guy)" I tend to agree.

I believe in his heart of heart's, he wanted his good buddy Joe Leiberman as v.p. and had to be brought kicking and screaming into reality, that, that particular move would have been campaign suicide.

159 Megan McCain is typical of most single women. She is. Hot Air yesterday had the poll where Huckabee came out on top against Obama in 2012, and and Palin DEAD LAST.

Palin is HATED by WOMEN and Young People. She is. Megan McCain, if you look at the poll, is a fairly representative example of attitudes and positions of young women.

What is most important for Young Women, is having the "correct" and socially approved values and beliefs, that gain them status among female friends, when it comes to picking candidates, policies, and Parties. Women favor Obama over Palin in 2012 56%-49%, while Men are 47%-36% in FAVOR of Palin!!!

Single Women in particular are HARD LEFT. Because their social network demands it and they face no economic, cultural, or political threat from Hard Leftism as Straight White Men do.

Megan McCain can coast on Daddy's money for a long time, single young women can coast on looks and being pretty for a long time. For example, 80% of layoffs since Sept. have been male. If women were getting fired the most under Obama, even his "Rockstar" appeal and persona would wear thin for them. But they aren't.

McCain hates Palin, Bush, Rove, etc. because they represent the populist wing more or less of the Republican Party, and Young Women HATE populism. Among other things populism threatens a female-friendly caste/Affirmative Action/PC-Multiculturalist system with a more flat, fair, and open playing field where results not identity group membership and recitation of cant matter. And economically/politically, populism = high defense spending which shifts tax dollars from Female-dominated Obama Welfare schemes to Defense Spending, benefiting the "true enemy" of most young women: the Beta Male.

Sad to say Megan McCain's attitudes and privileged snobbery are all too typical of most young women.

162 If we don't start attracting younger voters, we are doomed.

Maybe. But how do you attract the young 'uns? If it's by abandoning core principles like limited government, fiscal sanity, and even man-woman marriage, then what's the point? What have you gained?

Conservatism is (I think) an uphill battle. Conservatism means doing the hard things, the unpleasant things, and saying the things people don't want to hear. It's cutting your grass even when you don't feel good. It's maintaining your car not because you want to be "green" but because good maintenance will help the car perform better and last longer. It's doing the hard, boring, dirty shit-work that no one else wants to do (like going to war) because it is necessary. And yet all of these things are pretty unpopular with kids. Kids are naturally liberal; they become conservative after life kicks them in the nuts a few times.

I don't advocate spending a lot of time or money chasing the youth vote because most youths are complete fucking idiots. I would rather spend the time and money educating their parents, because it is the parents who teach the children.

I suspect that if we see a backlash against the liberal/statist political system, it's not going to be by traditional GOP tactics. I expect (hope?) it's going to be more libertarian in nature.

There will still be the social cons out there, but I for one do not give two fat shits what consenting adults (and farm animals, and even certain agreeable species of mammalian fish) do in the bedroom. I think the "war on drugs" is an abominable waste and morally indefensible besides, and I think that conservatives could win major points by simply saying that drugs are a health hazard and may be sinful if you are religious, but should not be illegal. Watch the jail population shrink and the tax receipts soar, and the associated drug violence drop like a stone.

I'd also legalize prostitution because I like hookers my heart bleeds for those poor women.

I disagree. I think McCain was more than willing to use Palin for political expediency. I personally know several conservatives who were going to sit out the election until he put her on the ticket. The consensus was, why slide gradually into socialism when we can just go headlong into it with Obama, a shock to the senses type of thing.

On McCain's behalf it was too little too late. Myself, I was advocating the lesser of two evil's approach, but I was really inspired when he put her on the ticket. However McCain's lack of gut's on attacking Obama in the latter month's sealed his doom. By picking Palin I believe he thought he could back into the presidency

I do agree however that Palin alone cannot win the nomination and also, putting her on any national ticket in light of the media savagery before and since the election could spell doom.

I admire the woman, but let's get real here, after her governorship is up, Congress would be her best bet.

I don't think any other of the likely candidates would have needed to pick Palin as a way to shore up the base. McCain did. Other candidates would have probably gone for someone slightly more moderate than them to attract those voters. Or taken the "Obama route" by picking someone that supposedly had experience in their weaker areas, like Obama choice of Biden for foreign policy. Nevermind that he's completely wrong on it all the time. Or they would have gone for someone from a state they hoped to acquire in the election.
And you may be right that it was McCain's choice, but are you going to tell us you've never been faced with a decision and you are leaning one way when someone comes along and makes a recommendation that makes you completely change your mind. Sure the choice is ultimately yours but someone else influenced your decision.

The method of appeal though should be in the framing of our principles. Not throwing the prinicples out the window and being more like the Dems. Because if they are promising X and Y and giving you $500, and we say we'll give you X and Y and $250. Where is the incentive to go with the Republicans?

I agree. You could probably fit more sausage in there, than what they serve up at Soldier Field on game day

Now that right thar is funny.

However I don't recall a clown car smelling like a bushel of crab's.

Because at the end of the day after all, it's just about penis' with little lace wig's around their bases and their covert plan to subjagate mankind.

I'm a redhead, so mines got a little clown wig on, for extra added horror.

Hell, I'd hit it sober. Right up till' the realization that hitting her was tantamount to Evil Knievel going over the Snake River Canyon in his rocket powered motorcycle and not making it to the other side, then and only then, would I decide to have a drink.

How do you beat it on the sides when it's an abyss ?

Step 1: Say you're a Republican
Step 2: Bash Republicans relentlessly
Step 3: Profit
Shhh, You just revealed Chaz Johnsons master plan to make 1 million dollars! He would have gotten away with it too if it weren't for you meddling kids! It's o.k. Sharmuta, chapstick and KY are on sale this week.

219 No one else would have had the cahones to select Sarah Palin, in the end it was McCain's choice and Sarah was his pick, you can't have it both ways.

He didn't pick Palin. The RNC picked Palin to try to lure the base back. He accepted Palin as part of the deal.

No appreciation of history, no sense of musical taste; why must we suffer her presence in public.

222 Joan: Either your last name is really McCain, or you drank the biggest cup of maverick koolaid ever poured. I'm from a 5 generation military family. I'm a vet myself. Wearing a uniform for this country doesn't make you perfect (see JimmyCarter).McCain is a backstabbing piece of shit. His daughter is a chip off the old block. Deal with it.

223 Seems to me you who are bashing McCain are the back stabbers. I never said McCain was perfect, I said that because he's from a military family as myself , I identify with him .Ihave a good ideawhat pressures he had growing up and the expectations that were set for him. I was acknowledging my own bias.
I respect McCain for doing what he thinks is right whether it's politically expedient for him or not, you seem to want someone that will tow the line.

What music do you listen to ? I can't really think of very many good rock and roll musicians who are conservatives, country , sure. I listen to a lot of musicians who I would not agree with politically, but they happen to produce great songs. I think it would be pretty ignorant and closed minded of me to not listen to their songs on the basis of their political views, don't you ?
