I've mentioned my background in an earlier thread; I worked for 32 years as a meteorologist for the U.S. Air Force, so I feel this is a subject I can address with some reasonable understanding and authority.

A couple of things are true: we have created "heat islands" centered around our major population centers, where the temperatures are and will remain several degrees warmer than they would be if we weren't pouring hundreds of square miles of concrete, chopping down trees and burning fossil fuels. Also, we're spewing gaseous byproducts into our atmosphere at alarming and unhealthy levels, particularly in places like Los Angeles, where the gaseous wastes of 11 million people are trapped in a shallow basin with no effective venting mechanism other than an occasional outbreak of the Santa Ana Winds. These aren't good things, and I'm not against some reasonable efforts to restrict and control these human activities. But that isn't the same thing as "global warming" (which is now being referred to as "climate change", in case some of you didn't get the memo).

All of the actual data I have seen suggests to me that the global atmosphere is in fact able to pretty efficiently process the worst we can throw at it, with almost no net effect on the global scale. It's kind of like a treeful of monkeys crapping on each other and thinking - through delusions of grandeur - they've soiled the entire forest.

In spite of human activity over the past hundred years, the single largest source of atmospheric carbon dioxide (aka "plant food"), is and will remain the Pacific Ocean. This increases and decreases globally as the ocean heats and cools around a roughly 25 year natural cycle. This is called the "Pacific Decadal Oscillation" in case any of you are interested in further reading. A secondary source of naturally occurring carbon dioxide is volcanic activity. Oddly, one of James Hansen's primary sources for monitoring atmospheric CO2 is an observatory located next to an active volcano on an island in the Pacific Ocean.

As well, the biggest single factor affecting the global heating/cooling pattern is the Sun, which is why scientists have discovered the same warming/cooling cycles on Mars as they've identified on Earth.

None of which is to say we should have no concern for our environment. Localized efforts to clean up, say, the Hudson River don't need to have the status of a global movement in order to remain valid on their own merits. And this is the problem inherent to the "global warming" true-believers: it isn't enough any more for them to just clean up New York and L.A. They've appointed themselves as the guardians of the world, and have crossed the line from real science to religion.

So let's develop some great new technologies. When they come up with a flying car that runs on cold fusion and carries a $20k pricetag, I'll buy one. But cutting NASA funding for space research (which is most likely to actually produce a flying car) and channeling the money into obstructionist eco-warrior programs is not the way to get there.

Here's my policy statement: if you live someplace like Detroit or Newark (or Beijing for God's sake), clean up your mess. But don't blame me for it; I live in Tennessee.

I don't know how many of you saw this item, as it was pretty much limited dissemination to hard-science publications and a few websites, but Hansen's lab actually published Oct '08 as the warmest October on record for the past 100 years, then had to print a retraction when it turned out that their data was skewed by the fact that the Russian observation sites had all re-sent September's temperature data by mistake.

The punchline is that the error wasn't caught by anyone on Hansen's team. They had to eat crow as it was discovered by a self-appointed anti-global warming watchdog who keeps a website for that sole purpose.

Remember, I spent 32 years processing and analyzing that same global met database, and I don't believe that kind of mistake would occur only once. It is the kind of thing that happens due to systemic bad quality control. How much of the rest of their data is tainted by human error and sloppiness?

CO2 is a piss-poor greenhouse gas. It absorbs infrared radiation in only three narrow frequency bands. The wavelengths are 2.7, 4.3 and 15 micrometers. The absorption percentage is very generously estimated at 8 percent, which means 92 percent of all infrared radiation passes right on through without being absorbed. And in truth, two of those frequencies don't get a lot of that wavelength anyways.

So the truth is that CO2 absoprtion of IR is only about 4-5 percent. Meaning 95 percent gets passed through. And considering CO2 is such a small component of the atmosphere, it is an even poorer greenhouse gas.

So, with all this warming we have had (supposedly) how big of a rise in sea level have we had? It is not measured in meters, not in feet, not in inches, not in centimeters but in millimeters. With all this warming, Sea Level has risen one millimeter! Oh noes, start building Arks, the Flood is coming!

But here is the catch. Thermal Expansion. The Seas have also heated and when you heat matter usually its volume expands and thermal expansion explains all or most of the rise.

And here is another catch. Heating the seas via convection with hotter atmosphere is inefficient to the extreme. With all heat transfer, radiant heat is the best heating. What does that mean? Solar Radiation, that big thermonuclear fire ball in the sky!
