Man Who Wanted To Slit The Throats Of Airline Passengers And Burn People To Death In Their Office Was Tortured Roughed Up A Bit

Since they won't have George Bush to kick around much longer (though you know they will try), the left has a newly minted hero today. Susan Crawford, who is the person appointed by the administration with charging Gitmo detainees, used the 'T' word. There will be much rejoicing in across the leftyshpere today no doubt.

The top Bush administration official in charge of deciding whether to bring Guantanamo Bay detainees to trial has concluded that the U.S. military tortured a Saudi national who allegedly planned to participate in the Sept. 11, 2001, attacks, interrogating him with techniques that included sustained isolation, sleep deprivation, nudity and prolonged exposure to cold, leaving him in a "life-threatening condition."

"We tortured [Mohammed al-]Qahtani," said Susan J. Crawford, in her first interview since being named convening authority of military commissions by Defense Secretary Robert M. Gates in February 2007. "His treatment met the legal definition of torture. And that's why I did not refer the case" for prosecution.

..."For 160 days his only contact was with the interrogators," said Crawford, who personally reviewed Qahtani's interrogation records and other military documents. "Forty-eight of 54 consecutive days of 18-to-20-hour interrogations. Standing naked in front of a female agent. Subject to strip searches. And insults to his mother and sister."

At one point he was threatened with a military working dog named Zeus, according to a military report. Qahtani "was forced to wear a woman's bra and had a thong placed on his head during the course of his interrogation" and "was told that his mother and sister were whores." With a leash tied to his chains, he was led around the room "and forced to perform a series of dog tricks," the report shows.

The interrogation, portions of which have been previously described by other news organizations, including The Washington Post, was so intense that Qahtani had to be hospitalized twice at Guantanamo with bradycardia, a condition in which the heart rate falls below 60 beats a minute and which in extreme cases can lead to heart failure and death. At one point Qahtani's heart rate dropped to 35 beats per minute, the record shows.

My 'Give 'O Shit' meter doesn't even budge on this one, never has, never will.

You want torture? I'll give you fucking torture. How about this...you are at work and suddenly there is a tremendous crash and fire. After huddling with your co-workers you realize you are 80 stories up and cut off from rescue by an out of control fire below you. The heat is becoming so intense that you can't stand it much longer. So you you try and call your loved ones and if you're lucky you get through. Maybe you get to say goodbye to them directly or you leave leave a voice mail that will haunt them forever. Then you break a window, hang hundreds of feet above the ground and let go.

That's torture.

Any government that had in their custody someone who might have information that could prevent that scenario from playing out again and didn't do every damn thing they could to prevent it wouldn't be doing its damn job.

And let's not pretend this was some rogue operation designed simply to amuse Dick Cheney and his dinner guests. Top Democrats, including now Speaker Pelosi, were briefed on these methods in 2002. What did she or one of her colleagues ask, were "the methods were tough enough"?

So don't come crying to me because a handful of murderous Islamists have been roughed up over the years. They chose to live in the shadows as international men of mystery and this is what they get for it. If they had a sense of honor to put on a uniform and attack us directly, well that's the way it supposed to be done and they should have and would have been treated accordingly. But they didn't. Life is equal parts choices and consequences. Qahtani made his and that's that.

I can't believe that we are going to spend the next couple of years gazing at our navels wondering if in the aftermath of 3,000 people being killed on our soil if we were gentlemanly enough in how we went about ensuring it never happened again. Yet here we are.

Pathetic.  Not just that we're even able to define his treatment as 'torture', but this is the first of many squishes in the Bush administration that will be so called whistle blowing.

If we've dumbed down the definition of the word 'torture', then I am being tortured every day that I see Schumer, Dodd, Pelosi in office.  Not to mention the new thug overlord, B-Ho and his merry pranksters.

Well said. I have more sympathy for the squirrel I accidentally ran over a few months ago than I do for whatsisfuck.

And again I must rail against the legal definition of torture. He was treated harshly, and rightly so, but at no time was he subjected to power drills in his kneecaps, wrists and elbows, and he never had his fingers smashed repeatedly, he didn't have eyes gouged out, nor he was slowly skinned with a filet knife. Fuck the legal definition. Torture is maiming out of pure glee or malice and serves only to prolong the pain before inevitable death. We don't do that. They do that!

23 That's.  Not.  Torture.  It's rough, it's intense, it's harsh but it's not torture.

My issue with defining torture down is how do you describe actual torture, you know, like being dipped into a vat of oil or acid or having fingers cut off and the like.  Superdoubleplusbadtorture?

And, look, I'm going to be perfectly blunt here.  I can make a very strong educated guess as to how he views women.  I *want* all of his interrogations to be conducted by strong, capable, armed, intelligent women.  I want all his medical care to be provided by women.  I want to throw in his face, at every possible damn opportunity, that women aren't less than dogs.

Boo freaking hoo he got upset during the interrogations.  I think my give-o-shit meter is in negative numbers.

24 This cardiac arrhythmia can be underlain by several causes, which are best divided into cardiac and non-cardiac causes. Non-cardiac causes are usually secondary, and can involve drug use or abuse; metabolic or endocrine issues, especially in the thyroid; an electrolyte imbalance; neurologic factors; autonomic reflexes; situational factors such as prolonged bed rest; and autoimmunity. Cardiac causes include acute or chronic ischemic heart disease, vascular heart disease, valvular heart disease, or degenerative primary electrical disease. Ultimately, the causes act by three mechanisms: depressed automaticity of the heart, conduction block, or escape pacemakers and rhythms.

Another thing. If you want to test some leftist who believes basically any non physical harsh interrogation technique is torture, ask them whether they would have any problem in administering a drug that will make the detainee tell the truth with the only side effect being flu like symptom for 48hrs.  They will stammer for a second trying to think of a reason why this would be bad before they give up and just say it is torture just because it is.

I don't think that's sexist, I just don't know if I totally agree.  I mean, blowtorching, acid baths, having a squirrel put into an orifice, that kind of crosses gender lines.  If you're trying to say that there are specific things, such as the pear of anguish, that a man can't really understand, okay.  But I wouldn't go so far as to say that a man (or woman) is incapable of formulating a comprehension as to what the opposite sex would find tortuous.

I do agree that they may not be able to comprehend what the pain is like, but I am leery of the idea that only women know what harms women and only men what harms men.

53 Just think about this...

7 years after 9/11, the American people put in charge of our country a man who agreed with his spiritual mentor of 2 decades that 9/11 was the chickens coming home to roost in this nation. This man in charge of our country also made his political career on the back of a domestic terrorist.

I have no other option but to believe that 52 percent of the electorate in this country agrees with those sentiments of Rev Wright and Bill Ayers. And the whatever percent of the electorate which stayed home and didn't bother to vote, voted anyway with their apathy to allowing this man to take over the reigns of our country.

There was a lot of talk about what gas price would be the breaking point for consumers. Well, similarly, some wondered when would the nation forget 9/11/2001. I'd have to say that the elections of 2006 and 2008 showed that the American people's attention span lasts all of 5 years. 9/11 has been forgotten by the majority of Americans.

Pathetic.

Well, as Queen of All Women, I wouldn't agree with that!

No, actually, that is a good point.  There's nothing improper or sexist about discussing the facts that men and women are biologically different, experience pain differently and perceive situations and stress differently.  One of my pet peeves is when "feminists" attempt to simultaneously claim that there are no biological differences between men and women and that women have a superior way of knowing.  Yeah, no.  It's one or the other, baby.  Either men and women are exactly alike or there are differences.  Pick.  One.

Which, um, wasn't exactly what you were discussing.  Sorry about that.  It just really ticks me off.  There are differences between men and women, up to and including how the brain processes data.  One is not better than the other, it's just different is all.  It's not demeaning to me, as a woman, to discuss those facts.

As I said earlier, I throw the bullshit flag and I expect to see a lot more of this shit in the coming weeks and months. I expect quite a few “tell-all” books as well in a few months. At least with those you can pretty much determine what the motive for all the lies and spin is.

The question here is what is her motive? Is she trying to set up an “I was against it” defense if the Obamites decide that she was an organizer for torture? We do know that the Dems have promised many show trials and investigations for what they see as Bush infractions.

One thing to remember about this woman is that she is the evil person that caused the Gitmo Lawyer to resign because she was so bad on the terrorists.

The other thing that gets me is that there is already talk that the assholes who were aggressively questioned will most likely walk because the evidence can not be used in court and the SCOTUS in their infinite wisdom decided that Gitmo was U.S. soil. Given that, and the fact that no other country wants these scum within their borders, we may even have to turn them loose inside our borders.

Not a single action in the entire tale is torture. Is it harsh treatment? Is it humiliation? Yes. IT IS NOT TORTURE!

Fucking candy-ass lawyers who got their feelings hurt during fraternity and sorority hazings should not be defining what constitutes torture.

Posted by: MCPO Airdale at January 14, 2009 11:20 AM (wba6w)

75 Gitmo detainees are the most protected species on the planet. It may have been uncomfortable and humiliating, but by now they know that they are the Untouchables, and no real harm will come to them. So yeah, all those saying that torture doesn't work have created such a safety net as to render this milquetoast concept of torture useless.

Now, hammering toes? That's never killed anyone but would be much more effective. I'm just guessing, here.

Forty-eight of 54 consecutive days of 18-to-20-hour interrogations.

This sentence makes no sense to me.   Either it's 48 consecutive days, or 54 non-consecutive days, unless I'm missing the "logic" in her "America is bad, Muslims are good" dhimmitude argument.  (Which is what it ultimately comes down to.)

As for this ass being "tortured" I, along with the others here, don't give a broken damn with a dent in the side panel.

If someone is going to claim torture it's too bad that we didn't go for the gold. I mean, if people really want to see torture I'm sure that we could deliver it in spades. The possibilities are truly endless if you put the right sick fuck in charge of said torture.

That being said, I really don't give a shit about this fuck. I'm sure we've extracted everything we can from him. Why is he still alive? And he isn't worthy of prosecution because of perceived torture? I know a LOT of people who would think otherwise. Something tells me they'd all still find him worthy of prosecution if they'd ripped off his fingers and toes one by one while playing catch with his testicles.

90 My issue with defining torture down is how do you describe actual torture, you know, like being dipped into a vat of oil or acid or having fingers cut off and the like.  Superdoubleplusbadtorture?

I think what we're seeing is moral equivalency in effect.  If blasting rock music all night while they're in a cell with no bed is the same as slowly skinning someone and rubbing salt in their open wounds, then we HAVE to go purely the legal system route on terrorism.  AKA The Bill Clinton method.

Which then begs the question...when I lived in the dorms at college and my next door neighbor would blast rock all night, and I had the equivalent of a board with styrofoam cheese on top to sleep on, can I retroactively sue the school and my neighbor?

Where is our moral authority to complain? Well, we have lost it." Perhaps you could tell that, not just to the families of the tower victims, but also to those two brave soldiers kidnapped by the terrorists in Iraq, then carved-up into little pieces and left by the roadside. 105 We are Americans, and we shouldn't torture. Not because of what it does to the terrorist scum, but what it says about us. However, the Geneva Conventions allows battlefield executions of "combatants" not in uniform or fighting under the flag of a sovereign nation. We should exercise this to the fullest. There would be much less of a clamor to fight against "The Great Satan" when several hundred of those who preceded you were shot a few minutes after being captured. No limelight, no publicity, no chance to strut around like the cock of the walk, spouting Islamic filth. 120 Drew, thank you for this extremely well-done post. You covered the salient points. When I read the original story this morning off Real Clear Politics I just about puked. Such agonized delicacy about the treatment of this poor terrorist POS. As you said, if these guys decide to play the "international man of mystery" game, all bets are off. If you are considering mass civilian murder, you ought to know this fate may await you.

When it comes to terrorists who can be positively identified (as Crawford affirmed in this case), they should be interrogated by the best methods available to ensure reliable results. They should not be treated sadistically, but only because that's not us, because they deserve whatever they get. However, once the interrogations are finished, however many hours, days, months or years that takes, they should be taken out and shot with the proper military formalities.

Both sides are talking past one another.  Yes there was torture.  Detainees in Iraq and Afghanistan were beaten to death.  Out of more than 100,000 detainees over the last eight years, there are about thirty deaths that are suspicious, probably some of them are in fact cases of going to far with interrogations.  Torture?  Yeah.  A major crisis, no.  Virtually all of those cases were DoD interrogations or in a few cases CIA officiers working with the DoD in the field.  Shit happens.  Mostly we ignore it because prosecuting it does not help.

Does it shock my conscience?  Am I sad that al Qaeda scum died in custody?  No, not particularly.  But it was stupid to expand these interrogation techniques to the Department of Defense?  Yes.  Rumsfeld fucked it all up.  This shit led directly to Abu Ghraib and idiotic inbred sexual deviants who decided to photograph their shennanigans.  That was a propaganda failure of epic proportions that almost cost us Iraq.  It hurt Bush's presidency.  It was a major major fuck up.  It cost American lives by firing up the Iraqi insurgency.

Now let's get to the issue at hand, waterboarding KSM and his ilk by the CIA.  Now I hope these interrogations were professionally done, although if you read Suskind it suggests even these were fucked up.  Again, it does not shock my conscience.  But we are apparently not waterboarding anyone anymore.  It is arguably a form of torture, although a relatively beign one as torture goes.

So I would prefer getting away from this shit and getting back to old school interrogation, which involved slowly but surely breaking down high value targets we get like KSM with carrots and isolation.  It worked wonders with Saddam.  It would probably work on a KSM (who weakness is his ego).  And in the meantime, I want to get back with not taking al Qaeda captives for the most part.  Send them to allah express from the battlefield and avoid this whole detainee problem.

Gee.  I thought pulling fingernails, mutilations, and rape were torture.  Silly me.

I think you nailed it.

Susan Crawford, who is the person appointed by the administration with charging Gitmo detainees, used the 'T' word.

Bush sure knows how to pick them, doesn't he?

Why do I get the feeling that he picked most of the people in his administration from a list provided by his friend Ted Kennedy?

Does Bush know any conservatives? This man cannot exit the WH soon enough for me. Then we can get back to blaming left-wing policy on the Democrats, which is the natural order of things.

Sleep deprivation or cold temperature environments (closely monitored to prevent injury) of AQ terrorists are acceptable methods to extract information about imminent attacks.

That treatment on non-terrorists or those who follow GC rules are not acceptable.

If only more people were murdered, more families directly effected, and more politicians, particularly of the Liberal flavor, incinerated on that day, then we might have gotten some rational response.

It's going to take a dirty bomb or worse in a high population center, and probably several over an extended time, for America to collectively wake the hell up to defend itself and stop this navel-gazing, self-flagellation.

We are fighting an enemy that doesn't play by the Marquis of Queensbury Rules, and can't find Geneva on a map.

They understand our way of thinking better than we ourselves. They don't hesitate to use children as suicide bombers or human shields.  They've got good occupational experience at torture, mutilation, and gratuitous executions. Feeling sorry for these shit bags is tantamount to weeping over a little humiliation meted out to former Nazis.  Whomever makes the decision to release any of them to pick up where they left off; planting IEDsthat kill American troops, targeting the West, and slaughtering innocent civilians, has a crap factory for a brain. (Read: B. Hussein Obama). He wants to 'negotiate without preconditions'. The Islamofasicts and the rest of the world's malefactors are salivating for a 'change they can believe in'.

If connecting a terrorists' testicles to a 12 volt battery will save American lives, I've two things to say: The RED is POSITIVE. The BLACK is NEGATIVE.

Subject to strip searches. 18-to-20-hour interrogations. Standing naked in front of a female agent. Forty-eight of 54 consecutive days.

Add a Las Vegas or Mid-Town telephone number and uptight executives would balance the debt for that kind of custody.
