27 I used to have a bit of a stutter, not cuz I was a stutterer, but because I was self conscious as a kid, so I have a habbit of either speaking very fast and rather loud (so that I'm not interupted, which is why I was self conscious and why I had a stutter) or occasionaly using space fillers.

Obama's "uh" and carolines "you knows" are space fillers. What they are, are ways of controling a conversation, preventing others from cutting you off while you are trying to say what you are trying to say.

My speach therapist, who was helping me with my stutter, specificaly stated that "uh" "umm" "you know" and "I mean" and other common space fillers not only make you sound dumb but actually prevent people from listening to you. She said about "you know" that it sounds patronizing, or rather "It sounds like you always know more than other people." My preferable space fillers tend to be laugh's or "vocal smiles" like "heh." Later when I took speach and debate, as well as something I was able to practice while I was in, was the skill of "the aggressive silence." Something that mothers learn pretty quick, that moment where you just control a space with silence.

Anyways, the point is that Caroline and Obama aren't idiots because of the "uh's" and "you knows" because those are just space fillers that they use to keep the conversation one sided. They just are shitty speakers.

When caty couric asked what palin read, she didn't ask the question as though she was interested in the answer, she asked the question to insinuate that Palin couldn't read. It was a classic "uncurious republican" question, and you can see in Palins response that she was offended not by having to answer the question, but rather by how the question was asked.

There are a lot of ways to manipulate people, and Caty was being a manipulative bitch throughout that whole interview.
