Obama Names National Security Team

No surprises but makes official what has been leaking over the last week or so.

President-elect Obama officially announced his national security team today, naming Hillary Clinton, a top rival for the Democratic nomination who he sparred with on foreign policy, as his Secretary of State.
Obama also retained Defense Secretary Robert Gates at the Pentagon, named former Marine Commandant and NATO Supreme Allied Commander retired Gen. James L. Jones as his national security adviser, Arizona Gov. Janet Napolitano Secretary of Homeland Security and campaign foreign policy adviser and Africa expert Susan Rice as ambassador to the United Nations.
Additionally, Obama officially named Eric Holder attorney general.

Elections have consequences.

Slublog has a link in the headlines to a post at the Campaign Spot that recaps some of the greatest hits from UN Ambassador designee Susan Rice. I particularly like this one...

On March 6, Rice said of Obama and Hillary Clinton, "they're both not ready to have that 3 am phone call."

That's comforting. Here's hoping Robert Gates has all the calls forwarded to him.

Executive appointees serve at the pleasure of the President and can be dismissed at any time for any reason or no reason, unless they are part of a semi-independent agency whose organic statute specifically requires the President to have "cause" to fire them. Anyone in the cabinet doesn't head such an agency at "arms-length" from the White House: the Fed and SEC chairmen are the first that come to mind. If you can think of a federal agency head called a chairman rather than a secretary, that's usually the quickest hint.

Can you imagine how tough it will be for these guys who have served their country in the military all of their lives to not roll their eyes every time Obama or Susie or Hilly or one of these other children opines on the state of the world.

Luckily the economy will totally suck so hard that it will strongly discourage our career soldiers and sailors from giving up their career in order to avoid having to organize and administer some great international easter egg hunt. Maybe we'll be able to rebuild what's left in '12 or '16 if the adults can get back in.

Johnson's enemies in Congress (i.e., almost everyone) had passed a bill, over his veto, to purportedly prevent him from doing this, and when he did it anyway, that's when they impeached him. The statute (the Tenure in Office Act, I think?) was almost certainly unconstitutional and I'm fairly sure has long since been repealed.
