I grew up in small town GA and the most vocal and black hating racist I ever met was a guy in my division from North Dakota. Before he joined the Navy he had never met a black person and he also said he could not understand what all the fuss was about. Things may well be different now with no draft and the military only taking high school graduates, but back then there were a lot “bad” people in the Navy, as well as some hard core racists. I generally found that the military reflects society as a whole.

It's cyclic. My son joined the Marines just over a year ago and would not have been able to get in without completing HS. At a slightly different point of the year, he could have with ASVABs high enough. The services tend to move those criteria somewhat depending on labor market factors.
