Debate Reactions

Ugh. Barack Obama is a lying c... country western singer, but no game changer, so effectively he wins.

McCain has one debate and two weeks of serious negative campaigning left. That's all that can help.

10 I think it's still a toss up.

On the dark side, if Obama wins, I'd be willing to bet my next paycheck the country will be so far in the hole people who elected him will be screaming for his scalp. How many times can you use the excuse "It's all George Bush's fault!"

13 And what gives with Obama's lying ads headlining Drudge?
"See how John McCain contributed to another financial crisis."

Tom Brokaw bringing up Wall Street getting drunk was just too rich; "never before Brokaw."

Obama had timer, no leash and no muzzle and no etiquette.

McCain keeps addressing everyone as if we're all in the Senate and he's on the floor. There's a place for that parliamentary tenor. But average American's zone out once Obama's shitload drones on and on and on.

24 Tonight is the night that we can point to when America became a Marxist nation. McCain lost. With three days of momentum from the VP debate, Palin cutting loose this weekend and McCain cutting loose yesterday, plus CNN actually running a real piece of journalism on Ayers, there was a lot of momentum to bring out the hammer on all of Barry's Marxist friends tonight......and McCain took a pass. And with that pass, on January 20, 2009, Barack Hussein Obama will be sworn in as the the first Marxist chairman of this country.

God. Help.Us.All.

WASHINGTON (AP) - Republican presidential candidate John McCain is proposing a $300 billion program for the federal government to buy up bad home mortgages and allow homeowners to keep their houses.

McCain said: "Until we stabilize home values in America, we're never going to start turning around and creating jobs and fixing our economy and we've got to get some trust and confidence back to America."

In an unusual step, McCain announced the plan during Tuesday's debate. He said that as president he would direct the federal government to purchase mortgages directly from homeowners and mortgage providers. The loans would be replaced with fixed-rate mortgages, ostensibly at a loss to the government.

"Is it expensive? Yes," McCain said.

Just because everyone loved the Bailout so much. Idiot.

I think the problem was that the debate was so fucking BORING that it dragged everything down. The first one had at least some suspense in the 'who's gonna fuck up, who's gonna lie, who's gonna mis-pronounce shit?'

This was just god-awful boring shit, pretty much the exact same stuff we've heard for weeks now from both these clowns.

Palin is interesting, personable, funny, quirky, down to earth and a hottie. Everyone else in this election is a dull also-ran. Expecting McCain to suddenly light up and try to win this thing may be in vain, but you never know.

31 The only promising point is that Obama left a bad impression near the end that I think will not sit well with the white lower and middle class.  When he talked about scholarships and aid that he got to attend the best universities, that will not sit well with some voters.  My wife almost threw something at the TV, she took it as "Na Na Na Na Na" I got to go to a good school cause I was black and you didn't.

32 I actually think a toss-up favors McCain.  If the Messiah doesn't dominate, what is the reason to chance it with the new guy when you've got a slightly grumpy but reasonably trustworthy experienced guy to go with?  I think the Obama buyer's remorse is going to set in pretty strongly in the coming weeks.

34 I thought Obama was a little shaky at times, especially on the foreign policy section. McCain got him good on the surge, but my sense is people don't give a fuck about the war, they want Uncle Sam to save them. It's not over yet, but this did not do what I thought it should do.

Sarah, you are our only hope. Make his punk ass bleed.

Posted by: Brian72 at October 07, 2008 10:59 PM (h6lGQ)

35

Really? I thought that Obama's comment, which he let slip during the foreign policy section (about Russia), was the "global test" of this campaign. Namely, Obama's proposal to solve our energy problems is to "reduce consumption" at home.

He wants to raise energy costs at home; taxes, reduction on drilling, you name it.

And McCain did fine. Won it, on points, I'd say.

McCain let Obama off the hook with Fanny and Freddy and doesn't seem interested in telling people what really happened or even correcting Obama when he lies about it.

And that means the Democrats will be at it again next year.

Both candidates could use some corporate finance experience.  And O needs to actually understand corporate structure.  CEO's don't get corporate tax cuts, shareholders get them.  The effect of a corporate tax cut can drive any number of things:  greater investment, lower prices on the shelf, or higher CEO salaries.  It's up to the shareholders via the board.  What board would take $700,000 of new cash flow and give it to the CEO (except in the instance where the board is recruiting a replacement)?

One of the first gaffe's I noticed from Obama (though maybe not a big one) was when he said he sent a letter to Ben Bernanke.  Did he say Paulson too?  I don't remember.  Anyways, he said he sent a later to Bernanke regarding the subprie crisis TWO YEARS AGO.

Unfortunately for Obumble, Bernanke was not the Chairman of the Fed two years ago.  Just as Alan Greenspan, who was Fed chair through the end of '06.

In all, that was a shittyass debate.  Watching an old married couple snipe at each other over all the little things that have happened over the years that got under their skin.  What a bunch of crap.  McCain should have brough the hammer down on CRA/Fannie/Freddie, and called out Obama's errors and shitty statistics.  Alas, neither one of these dolts had a keen enough grasp of economics to turn this debate into a bloodbath.

75 I'm biased (that honestly tells you i'm a conservative) but i'd call it for McCain by a nose. Not a game-changer unless people really let some of the messages sink in. I'd say the game has been kept alive. McCain did well enough not to sink his campaign.

I was glad to see McCain on the attack about Obama's record on the current crisis and foreign policy, and still homely and physically embracing the serviceman in the audience. I'm disappointed Ayers did not come up, i guess that means there as still aces in the pack, and McCain had to confront the economic message of the Dems head on. Still, Obama was pretty slick and seemed to have a counter attack for every attack on his record.

For me, the real difference came not in the debates over specifics but the visions of both men. Before i read a single line of commentary i'd like to say the closing statements said it all, paraphrased below:

Obama: I was poor to start with and rose to great heights that i could never have hoped for in any other country. Now it's time to change the country fundamentally. I hope you are with me on this amazing journey (destination not specified)

McCain: (in unspoken reference to his POW years) I know what suffering is like. I know what it's like when others look to you for hope. I know what it's like when others pick you up and give you hope. I ask the American people to give me another opporunity to serve because through all this it has always been "my priviledge to to put my country first."

That last part is a direct quote.

Obama's statement was all about himself, and how the country has to change to suit him.

McCain's was all about his country and how much he loved it and was willing to sacrifice himself for it.

Oh yeah. There are "fundamental differences" alright.

One candidate understands the words of Kennedy "Dont ask what your country can do for you. Ask what you can do for your country"

The other is a total wanker.

Some people's legs might shake when Obama speaks. I was almost in tears when McCain spoke.

I never knew he had it in him.

No one got it.   They don't know who Bill Ayers is, or about his history.   The MSM is still winning.   Its time to start fighting like a democrat.  Start putting up notices at newspaper racks about the destruction of forests for newsprint and how it is destroying the world by stopping the absorption of CO2 by the trees.  Destroy them with their own propaganda.   We can kill the newspapers.   They are going under anyway so it is time to toss them a anvil.

104 Cheer up. You do not have to worry about anything. You will not even need to say anything after the dems win. We know going in to the next few years of misery that they are totally inept and not capable of running the country just like the republicans that came before them. After a few years of that people will forget about how much they hated the republicans and they will return to power. It will probably collapse after it gets big enough and nobody will care.

After sitting and thinking  about this for a while, I actually think that McCain did himself some quietly solid good tonight.  He didn't have a dramatic knockout punch, but he was clearly, to everyone, sober and solid and substantive--quietly competent and authentic.  He got about a dozen solid shots in at Obama without histrionics.  His moment with the petty officer was the most touching one of the debate, and his final statement was very, very good in a simple, honest way.

Even PBS said it was a tie, which they then said went to Obama, as he was looking serious and grace-filled again, yada, yada.  But, they were quite sober themselves, and even a black female commenter (not Ifill) noted that Obama wandered badly on the foreign policy questions, and overall did not do as well as last week.  A consensus was that Obama probably was prepared for a McCain attack, and was thrown off stride.

All in all, I think McCain planted a few seeds tonight, and the points from the debate that people remember are going to be largely the ones that he made.  And those quietly planted seeds will germinate.  They already are with me, and I'm familiar with the man.

Sorry if this seems like a dorky post, but I'm coming around from being bored to seeing what happened tonight as important--in a good way.

I think McCain did extremely well with that last question. A steady hand at the till is a theme worth repeating in his ads. Scare the shit out of people. The country is in grave economic danger, do you want a guy who spent 7 years with the viet cong and came out in one piece or this completely untested kid at the helm? A guy who came out of the dirtiest political machine in the country or a reformer? A guy who knows how to promise, but who's never delivered or a guy who can do both?

As for the next few weeks, the last debate won't matter, simply because no one ever watches the last debate. So it's really all about the ads now. Go negative, Maverick. Be specific and brutal, cuz nothings works like a well-sourced negative ad.

110 I used to always believe that dueling sides would keep this country grounded, and that revolutionary thoughts were the way of nut cases crying for not getting their way.

For the first time I am actually conceptializing a "reset" plan when the shit hits the fan. Neither candidate represents anything remotely I stand for as a neo-libertarian. 4 years of obama, and god willing, a conservative revolution afterwards will get us exactly where Reagan got us in the political spectrum. As hard as he tried, the nation still wound up 1 step forward and 2 steps back towards a socialist society.

Palin has to think of herself. Start running for 2012. Now.

Well, I think we all knew this is what would happen when Romney got screwed by open primaries and McCain's ally Crist in Florida. We have all been hoping he would become something he is not. Like Bush, he isn't a standard bearer for conservatism. Sure, the Palin pick was a wonderful move to placate us conservatives. Hell, had he picked someone else, he would be behind by 15 right now. That said, Palin alone can't fight this fight. McCain has let the media and Dems set the narrative and now he's stuck with it. The only thing that consoles me is that Obama is an empty suit. He won't get anything major passed with a crap economy. The rest of the world is on their own, but f*%$ them. They want Obama anyways.

118 To revisit the poker analogy I made a couple of weeks ago:

Obama-Biden: Unsuited rags - say, Jack-five offsuit
McCain-Palin: Pocket pair of aces

The flop (represented by the events on Wall Street): Jack-Jack-five, giving Obama a full house right off the bat

It's become clear to me that the turn card (i.e. the rest of campaign season, including the debates) will be a big fat blank for McCain, so now he's reduced to needing an ace on the river (i.e. a favorable turnout on Election Day itself) to get the bigger full (White) house.

If this were an actual hold'em hand, assuming no one else was playing and folded an ace, at this point there would be two aces left in the deck out of 44 unknown cards, which means McCain would have a 4.5% chance of catching his two-outer to win.

4.5%... that sounds about right.

You're right.  Next time I, for one, will say nothing bad about Mike Huckabee.

Nope. Like I said back then, instead of ripping Huckabee, how about elevating the candidate that you do like? It was all negative, all the time. The Republican (online) base spent most of its energy during the primaries attacking Huckabee, being negative about the other candidates, and in-fighting.

By the time we woke up, McCain backed-doored himself into the nomination. And I warned and warned and warned everyone because I saw it coming. Huckabee was a fringe candidate and his status rose because Christian Conservatives said "fuck you" to the all the cocksuckers telling them to shut up. Now we got McCain.

126 McCain brought fresh meat to the floor tonight. McCain specifically answered the submitted/accepted questions (dumb as they were) and provided additional material than merely recapitulating the last debate as Obama did. Obama failed to answer questions. According to Gwen Ifill, Obama "blew us all off" as he ignored Americans, stuck so on himself and his blah-blah-blah uninformed crap. So Obama, WHAT WILL THE FINES IMPOSED BE on all those people who can't afford insurance? Let's see, fine the lower economic class, fine businesses, fine "all those living high on the hog", tax, tax, tax.

Boring. This shows why we do not like to elect Senators to the Presidency. McCain talks like he has spent the last thirty years in the Senate. Obama is not the public speaker he thinks he is. My guess is that everyone thinks he is a public speaker because they have not been exposed to any good public speakers.

The difference between McCain and Palin, to my mind, illustrates what is wrong with the Republican Party. McCain is going for the promotion. He has put in the time, he deserves to be President. Palin, on the other hand, like all of us, is an outsider. She has passion, because she understands that the politicians are screwing with our country, our families, our lives. No matter that the MSM wanted to air it ....but tonight they had no choice, and now it's out there. McCain also nailed the boy's misunderstanding of the world. Schooled him on how we infiltrate, befriend and then use the locals in every war since Korea. And when Obama bragged about his plan, McCain stuck a fork in that by introducing the fines for non-compliance that Bama did not previously want to reveal. McCain won this one, and I think he'll come on harder at the last debate, because after the second debate, nobody remembers the first one, after the third debate, nobody remembers the second one.

Obama is not ahead. No one is ahead. Polls have been oversampling Democrats, and besides, they're just polls. The score is 0-0, as the game doesn't take place until November 4. oh, yeah.  I remember now."

It wasn't McCain's job to go out there and be the 'ultimate conservative'.  That's Palin's job, and she's doing it remarkably well.  McCain's job in this format is to go out and corral the independant douchebags who still haven't made up their f**king minds yet.  The focus tonight wasn't on us, folks.  If you want red meat, wait for Palin's next stump speech.

Now; Ron Paul would have run a better debate, certainly one more entertaining and thought-provoking. Imagine the fun Paul would have had on Obama's "healthcare is a right". And Paul is the only candidate who would have brought up the CRA.

It's easy to blame McCain and dislike Obama.  But the problem is the MSM.  Even  back to 2004, the MSM hired lawyers to nail O's primary opponent and general opponent.  But they didn't have $5 for a cab to Trinity Church.  That's simply stunning to me and requires a response from the right.  Where is the right's Soros that could fund an MSM for the right?

Women: McCain 53-36

By Age
18-34: McCain 65-27
35+: McCain 70-21

Who would be better at handling Iraq & Afghanistan wars

188 First of all, I think we get so hung up on the media telling us that McCain needed some kind of home run, that when McCain didn't come out and physically tackle Obama, we automatically think the sky is falling.

I'm tired of this whole, "game changing moment" nonsense that people keep talking about because in two old debates (1984 and 198 two candidates got off memorable zingers. McCain needed to lay down a foundation for the final month of this campaign and he did that. This idea about buying up troubled mortgages is going to be BIG NEWS over the next few days. Will it work? Maybe. Maybe not. But people are going to be talking about it and its something that people are going to perk up their ears.

Three major polls have showed a tightening in this race. State polls usually lag 5-7 days behind national polls, so expect by the next debate to see some tightening there. McCain can let Sarah Palin be the attack dog for the most part on Ayers and Wright. The 527's will do a lot of work on that. Remember, if you live in New Jersey, you're not seeing the ads that are running Florida and Virginia.

We need to chill people. We've become so used to success over the last 8 years. We have a fight on out hands on this one, but it can be won.

I have a feeling he achieved exactly what he set out to do, and that he's marshalling his resources and his timing in a way that makes sense to him.

Sure, there weren't any fireworks and McCain missed a lot of opportunities to go after Obama's positions more aggressively. But you know what - I think McCain actually did quite well. Nah, I disagree. Carter was a completely useless and typical liberal democrat. I can't see Obama being much better if worse comes to worse. Plus, I'd argue the stakes were a lot higher with The Soviet Union at the time, fresh out of our failing to save Vietnam.

The point is you give these morons way too much credit. One of the good things about being a conservative is the faith that your country will always prevail over whatever odds.

Does that mean "just happy talk"? Does that mean I'm not fucking seething with rage that Obama's coasting for President while the media blows him? Of course not. 209 Tonight is the night that we can point to when America became a Marxist nation.

Review, in deep detail, the presidencies of Franklin Roosevelt, Lyndon Johnson, Jimmy Carter, and government expansionist, Mr. Wage and Price Controls himself, Richard Nixon. This is not the first time this sort of stuff has happened. The bailout bill may be new, but the socialism is not--Richard Nixon and Jimmy Carter were full of it. And yet, after Roosevelt, we got tax-cutting, defense-hawk JFK. After Lyndon Johnson and Richard "EPA/OSHA/EOC" Nixon, and then Jimmy "Malaise" Carter, we got frickin' Ronaldus Magnust. Ronald Reagan, the Redeemer. Before that, we had Nixon and Gerald Ford. Before that, frickin' Eisenhower.

McCain is an Eisenhower, he's a Nixon (politically). If we get a McCain administration, we will survive it. Barack Obama is a domestic Roosevelt+LBJ+Nixon, and a Jimmy Carter foreign policy. We've seen it all before. Yes, it impacts us negatively. Yes, it impedes our progress and puts us in danger in the world. But we will survive a Barack Obama in the Whitehouse without becoming a Communist state. And we will survive a McCain in the Whitehouse, even though we might end up signing Kyoto and putting the economy in the crapper for a while.

The history is there.

211 Damn.  Over 200 posts already.  I can't hope to catch up, but for every nay-sayer who catches up with me, I'm not too worried after tonight since the debate was a draw.  I think and hope that was McCain's goal.

McCain is looking for a different venue.  One of the rules of warfare is to pick your battlefield.  I don't think he fought to a draw tonight without reason.

Anyhow, I posted thoughts elsewhere, but these are probably the relevant bits:

I think McCain sort of won.

One of the rules of warfare is to make a noise in the east and attack from the west.  Obama seemed focused on the east.  If he was prepared to attack he never did.  He was focused and prepared to defend against something which never happened.  And that's why he was shown to be a boob.

I think McCain has a plan.  I don't think this oatmeal debate is cause for panic.  McCain said the gloves are off, and he wasn't lying.  However, everybody assumed that meant he would take every opportunity to smack Obama.  That would be stupid given the 24/7 news cycle, and the short attention span of the average American.

McCain is gambling again.  Nobody won the debate.  I doubt McCain thinks it was a battle worth winning.  He will take the fight elsewhere.  After all, another rule of warfare is to pick the battlefield.  McCain will bash Obama on the campaign trail.  He intends to seize the initiative and drive the debate in a venue where Obama will necessarily have to take time to formalize a response and fight back.  So long as he can keep Obama in defensive mode, he will have an advantage.

McCain is a successful politician and decorated military hero.  He might make mistakes, but fighting a battle to a draw isn't one he would make without having a greater goal in mind.

Not a good debate, but there is an opening for a McCain ad. Apparently no noticed that Obama is suggesting that what we really need is an economic contraction. Energy, use less and get out your Carter era sweaters. I am sure someone can find some video of Carter advocating the same solutions to our energy problems.

Why does energy need a huge government program. Seems to me that we have a few companies that have a great deal of expertise in the field and would be willing to do the work at no cost to the government. Just get the government out of the way and let fossil fuel producers do what they do best.  While they provide the current most efficient fuel source available perhaps there will be a breakthrough in alternative fuels that provides a cost effective solution.

The private sector will provide the next breakthrough. I am sure that there is someone out there that would like to be richer than god and almost as rich as Bill Gates.

Balrog, you're right on #225. McCain won this one; and as for the stuff I and many of the rest of us wish McCain had said, all that could still be said in a future debate.

I suspect that as the Congressional Black Caucus ramps up the Palin-is-racist talk, more and more moderate whites will get disgusted - not to mention, worried about how they'll fare under the Community Organiser and his better half, Grievance Girl.

But anyway. I'd like to hear from our host why McCain's mortgage bailout plan is a bad one. We're in need of a financial overhaul, yes? We're not on principle opposed to the occasional government intervention, yes?

I do think in a contrarian way this debate could be better for McCain than expected.  I hear a lot of conservatives angry that McCain was center-right and not conservative, but we all already know that.  To us he's nothing more than a seat warmer for Palin, don't forget that.   Obama looked center-left but that's how the media has painted him and how moderates look at him so looking it again may not be much of a benefit.

However, McCain according to the dems and media is Bush III.  The media has painted Bush as an extreme right-wing nut conservative which moderates fear.  By looking decidedly center-right McCain could have helped himself more with moderates than Obama did.  Of course that is so long as conservatives don't have a collective freak out over McCain being who we all know him to be.

He's losing his base?  Losing the energy? Then why are 10-20 thousand cheering people showing up at every Palin event?  Why did 70 million tune in to watch the VP debate?  Sarah Palin is responsible for the base, and the base is fine (not counting the suicidal nay-sayers who post on these blogs).  McCain is targeting the dopes who will spend ~10 minutes between now and election day thinking about who to vote for.  People need to understand that the next 4 weeks will be spent focusing on a relatively small number of voters in about 7 or 8 states.  Everyone who's having a bird because McCain didn't cover our X-Y-Z arguments needs to chill out.

I respectfully disagree with my friend Bart, Senator from the great state of whichever one he's from:

McCain never had the base.  Palin has the base.  McCain is what he is, and he is running as what he is.  We always knew this.  The winner of this election is the one who best defines Obama, and the way I look at it, McCain and Palin are engaging him from two different directions. It is like two cats playing with a snake.

To some extent, McCain going nuclear in the debates undercuts Palin, if that makes any sense.

I'll say again what I've said before: This is not McCain vs. Obama, it is Palin vs. Obama.  I may be tragically wrong.  We'll see soon enough.

Footnote: If McCain started playacting like he was a diehard rockribbed conservative, who would really buy it?  It would hurt him the same way Obama's hopey changey bringer of light bullshit gets nicked everytime Sarah gets in front of a microphone.

Perhaps McCain chose not to go after obama because he wants to pander to the people in the middle.

I agree. How else to explain the TOTAL DISCONNECT between  the McCain we saw yesterday, who was the attack dog we've been waiting for, and the utterly disappointing mamby-pamby McCain who showed up at tonight's debate.

Conventional wisdom says elections do get decided by that 15-20% in "the middle" who, supposedly, one month before Election Day are still undecided. So ask yourself: What kind of person, in this election, with these candidates, would still be UNDECIDED at this point in time, for crying out loud? A person with absolutely no personal political philosophy, that's what! A person who never picks up a newspaper except maybe for the comics and the crossword puzzle. A person who comes as close as you and I can imagine to living under a rock.

THESE people DO decide their vote on the basis of very shallow things, including "Oh, he seems like a nice man." Makes my head want to explode. But there you have it. And perhaps your theory's correct, that that's who McCain was playing to tonight. I hope so, anyway. And hopefully, enough of the people who are at least minimally connected with the real world will tune in to the news enough to see and hear the attack dog we saw yesterday!

(Of course, the prospect of Captain Zero winning may continue the financial turmoil...)

Anyway, we'll see how the polls move.

"Steady hands on the till.  Everything I learned about leadership I learned from a chief petty officer.  I know what suffering is.  I know how to be picked up by friends and strangers."  The list goes on and on.  The key to sales against a new product is to  cast doubt.  McCain did that.

Well, getting taken in by a jive-talking huckster eventually worked out well for the denizens of River City, Iowa -- the bickering school board members magically turned into a barbershop quartet; little Ronnie Howard learned to cope with his socially crippling speech impediment; the mayor's wife stopped being a censorious harpy fixated on Baaaalls-zack; and Marian the 40-year-old-virgin Librarian finally got her library card punched, if you know what I mean. (Hint: I mean that her hymen was broken by Prof. Harold Hill's erect penis, or so we can infer.)

So anyway, my plan if Obama wins is just to go into a fetal position with The Music Man looping continuously in the DVD player, and telling myself that things will be okay...

302 Did not see the debate, and I am seeing wildly mixed reactions here and on some other RW blogs.

I am one who thinks that McCain should be fighting harder...but looking at the transcript, what was McCain supposed to do? Was he supposed to start hitting Obama on Ayers or Wright when the question was about something else? That would go over well with we red-meaters, but I doubt with anyone else.

Irt's obvious to me, again from the transcript, that the questions and questioners were carefully vetted. the whole thing would be much more informative had there been a few wild card questions from the rabble, IMO.

I'm not ready to jump off the bridge yet, but I'm starting to notice just how high it is.....

Anyone else getting hostile contact all of sudden? Currently I'm getting spooky stuff  from a "very liberal" Iranian. No mutual friends. Trying to understand where this is coming from.

I'm a tad bothered. We have four young kids here. I imagine those who have a website  might have to deal with more hate.

Just wondering about the level of attack we're dealing with. My brother is a cop and told me they are already preparing for election night. Riots are expected on both cases.

Crap. Even as I type I'm getting the very persistent Iranian's multiple scariness.

#190 You are dead on.  ....

"Steady hands on the till.  Everything I learned about leadership I learned from a chief petty officer.  I know what suffering is.  I know how to be picked up by friends and strangers."  The list goes on and on.  The key to sales against a new product is to  cast doubt.  McCain did that.

There was nothing new about Uhbama tonight, and that is what made it boring.

Everybody on liveblog exploded when that guy asked the question (apparently thinking it was another Obama plant), but I thought he was just doing what a good CPO does: Set the table for his officer to look good.

Some of those clowns probably were Obama plants, but if that Navy chief wasn't already a McCain supporter, I'll eat my hat.

Exit question: If African-Americans are, as the media tells us, overwhelmingly supporting Obama, why do focus groups of "undecideds" have a makeup that is at least 10% (Maybe more, from what I saw on Luntz) African-American?  Maybe I just need to "suspend my disbelief" on that one.

311 I think there are a lot of Obamabots running around the conservative blogs tonight and posting crap.  While the debate was not the slice'n'dice I was hoping for, I am stunned at some of the defeatist bullshit I am reading.  The fact still remains that the polls we have been ingesting all along are quite possibly weighted in a way that the election will not be, unless these fucking communists find a way to manipulate that, too.

Grow a pair, people.  The base is sound and solid.  Palin is on fire.  Obama is still an empty suit and the wind was really whistling through it tonight.

I don't know if I'm right, I can only say what I thought.  And I saw a draw tonight.  Obama could only defend himself against a doddering old man.  He certainly didn't offer a nova of offense against a fellow who bumbled around the stage like Hank Hill's shinless father.

I think that McCain offered Obama a whole reel of rope with which to hang himself.  I think the gamble is whether Obama will take the bait.

A draw can be a win for McCain.  Obama is thin-skinned and arrogant.  Don't forget that in the past, he has taken every opening McCain has offered and been crushed.

We.Are.So.Fucked.

I guess McCain spent it all yesterday in Albequrque. He's going to need a lot more political Viagra between now and 11/4 to even have a prayer.

I understand not wanting to completely ignore the question but when else is he going to have the chance to talk to everyday Americans (not us political junkies) about the Obamarxist, his radical, Marxist, Che loving associations, the CAC, Ayers, the Global Poverty Act (which is one fucking scary piece of legislation) that Obama is primary sponsor of, Obama's plans for a National Civilian Defense Force funded equally with the Pentagon (what the fuck is the police and local law enforcement for?!?!?), and all of the other Marxist shit he has planned. McCain failed tonight and failed miserably. If the average American knew about this crap, there is no way in hell they would EVER vote for Obama. Ever.

Palin Talks to the Press Aboard Her Plane

Sarah Palin granted her traveling press corps their first full press conference aboard her plane today and said she will continue to link Barack Obama to 1960’s radical Bill Ayers even while Americans are suffering with the crushing economic crisis:

“Americans are caring about the problems in the economy of course And wanting to know what those long term solutions are that our ticket can provide and what the other ticket is proposing so when you talk though about what it is that we are proposing and what it is that Barack Obama is proposing again it is relevant to connect that association that he has with Ayers–not so much he as a person Ayers, but the whole situation and the truthfulness and the judgment there that you must question if again he’s not being forthright in all of his answers as to how did you know him, when did you know him, why would you continue to be associated with him?” Palin asked, “It makes you wonder about the forthrightedness, the truthfulness of the plans that he is telling America in regards to the economic recovery because that is first and foremost on Americans’ minds.”

This was the first time the Alaska governor took questions from the reporters who have been traveling with her over the last month. The rare opportunity took place on a flight from Pensacola, FL to Greenville, NC. She introduced herself to the press she did not know and engaged in some small talk about reporter’s families even passing me a Happy Birthday message to my mom after she learned it was her birthday.

4 years of obama, and god willing, a conservative revolution afterwards will get us exactly where Reagan got us in the political spectrum. As hard as he tried, the nation still wound up 1 step forward and 2 steps back towards a socialist society.

One problem with that theory:
SUPREME COURT.
Obama pledges to appoint judges in the mold of Ginsburg, Souter and Breyer.
God help us. Forget the "2 steps back" trope. It could take us all the way to the society that Ayers and Dohrn want to see--and that, I'm afraid, would be past the point of no return.

As several here have suggested, get your guns and ammo now, while you still can.

330 come on, you guys really going to do this shit?  Really?  Really?

I promise you no good will come of this.

Further, it's quite obvious why McCain won.   McCain won because candidates who were better in most ways on paper nevertheless were wrongly disqualified by a critical mass of  voters for departing from the conservative orthodoxy on one  issue or trait.

Guiliani -- pro-choice, "gun grabber"

Romney -- conservative  positions suddenly arrived at; further, there is intense anti-mormon bigotry among many in the religious right, and I'll call that for what it is.

Fred -- actually, on paper, no disqualifying positions, but seemed a lot weaker, more frail, and less charismatic than I'd hoped, and got into it far too late, and didn't seem to be energetic enough to make up for lost time.

so, as in previous years (1996?) the party dumbly chose an "acceptable" candidate instead of a possible winning candidate.

KC, you're exactly right -- anyone who thinks the president is responsible for everything that happens is a doofus and an idiot munch.  And it just reinforces my decision to vote for McCain.  Come on, anyone who thinks of just sitting this out, you're not only helping Barry win, you'd also be helping to set up all three branches in the hands of the Dems (and the neo-Dems at that, which Lieberman tried to point out).  If anything vote for the idea of checks and balances like our Founding Fathers designed.

Besides, puppies, who are way more awesomely awesome in their awesomeness than anyone else on this entire planet, consistently vote for JohnnyMac over Barry.  So if it's good enough for (way awesome, totally cool) puppies, then it's good enough for me -- they aren't called man's best friend for nothing.

Plus a big shout out to my amphibious brothers (and sisters), Semper Fi!   (my husband and daughters' group isn't too shabby in that poll either, so a shout out to them too I guess -- Hoo-ah and Rangers Lead the Way!)  So there, who you gonna follow?  Totally cool, completely awesomely awesome puppies, Devil Dogs, and Dogfaces, or patchouli soaked, whiney little cud chewing yippies who would like to demoralize you (ehem, that other "dog")?

Another great night. How about we take a few minutes to drop a few sawbucks into the coffers of the candidates who will help usher a new progressive America -- from Barack Obama at the top, all the way down to the Senate and House candidates.

This is a multi-front battle. The White House is important, so give to Obama, but don't forget that he's going to need as much support as possible in the House and Senate, and we've got a whole bunch of GREAT House and Senate candidates in the "better Democrats" mold.

Sir, I am a member of the religious right and resent your accusation of anti-mormon bigotry. Though I believe Mormonism is a false religion, Mr. Romney was not seeking a job in my church. The irony did not escape me that the so-called-polygamist Mormon should be the only candidate on the Republican side still with his first wife. After Mr. Thompson dropped out I supported Mr. Romney.

Huckabee isn't on the ballot. All those guys who either didn't want to win (Thompson, Giuliani) or just plain sucked as candidates (Ron Paul!) aren't on the ballot. There are two people who are on the ballot, though; one of them is John S McCain and the other one is Barack H Obama.

If you like democracy and freedom, then vote for McCain. If you want the country to descend into chaos, then vote for Obama.

It's really that simple.

This is going to sound really strange to you Justin, but some of us -- who support free markets and capitalism -- care as much or even more about murdering precious innocent unborn babies.

Further even those of us who like myself are not particularly religious, know several believing Mormons as friends... who do things like man pro-life information booths... and we respect these people of faith for their strong, sincerely held, and often inconveniently held pro-life views.

So we lost respect, trust, and even affection (for not being on the right of innocent children vs. political expediency) for Mitt Romney when learned he went to the left of Ted Kennedy, skirt chaser and cowardly manslaughterer (is that a word), during that debate.

Baka - I'm with you.  I can't believe what a bunch of vaginas we have here tonight.  So McCain didn't come out looking 30 years younger and calling Obama a communist for 90 minutes means he lost????  You guys need to go back to reading your John Birch Society pamphlets.

John McCain has taken a beating for the last week for being "erratic," "Unstable," desperate, and mean.  He was none of those tonight.  He made asses of all the media goons who have been tearing him down.  He was warm, compassionate (if Biden tearing up won the debate for him, then come on, McCain hugging the petty officer beat the hell out of it), and substantive.  He gave straight talk about the economy and taxes.  His closing statement was a micro version of his convention speech, which is what vaulted him into the race to begin with.  He looked like a president.

Obama looked and sounded like a tool from start to finish.  His closing was especially horrible, very Me Me Me while McCain was all Country First.  He really does suck at these unscripted things.  He also just lost Florida by selling Israel out to the UN.  Nobody could possibly have watched this debate and come away feeling that Obama will be a friend of Israel.  His bullshitting on Pakistan was unconvincing and Mccain nailed him on it.

McCain also feinted the Obama campaign into wasting huge money and an entire news cycle on some shit about Charles Keating that nobody cares about.  They were sure he was going to bring up Ayers tonight and he didn't.  Good for him.  Tomorrow Sarah Palin will be back out hammering Obama with a smile on her face.  It's gonna drive Obama nuts.

Love that! You got Obama to a T. He's a fucking communist, all right, but the brains and the balls of the operation is Bill Ayers. Obama's the puppet, Ayers pulls the strings. Obama's the messed-up kid with the mommy issues, the daddy issues, the grandma issues--seeking POTUS as a way to work out one's personal identity issues. Ugh.

Unfortunately, the fact that this guy is pathetic doesn't keep him from being dangerous as hell. Read "Understanding Obama: The Making of a Fuehrer" at
http://www.faithfreedom.org/obama.html
But don't read it right before bedtime, as I made the mistake of doing. Not much sleep that night....

Ann Coulter called the O's autobiography "a dime-store Mein Kampf" and the O himself  "a two-bit dictator." She got it about right. Unfortunately, once again, a two-bit dictator is still a dictator.

You can not run a Mormon against a Black Candidate.

The Mormon church did not allow blacks to serve until the 1970s

That alone would have disqualified him in a race against Barack Obama.

You will not get a mormon into the whitehouse at the head of the ticket until he goes in on the bottom of the ticket first.

Ace, you missed the first part of my comment.

You know, the part about calling Mike Huckabee "Fuckabee" and then accusing those of us (in a general sense) who opposed Mitt Romney of being anti-Mormon bigots and not sincerely opposing him for the reason we almost all expressed. To wit his flip-flopping (against his faith no less) on the critical issue of intentionally killing innocent life?

Would you accuse someone who didn't support a 1850s pol because they were before slavery before they were against it of being a bigot?

I'm not necessarily saying you are a bigot... but your "Fuckabee" headline and your accusing people who opposed Romney's nomination of bigotry offers at least as much evidence of bigotry as you're offering against us.

That may not be a lot, but likewise, you're not offering a lot in your accusations.

I cannot accuse you of something "generally."  What you mean is that I am saying something about SOME members of a group you belong to, and you believe you have the right to take offense for a "group insult" as if I insulted you personally.

You would  do better to speak to other religious cons and persuade them that religious bigotry is just as ugly when directed at mormons as when directed at they themselves rather than attempting to mau-mau me into not speaking an obvious truth because it offends your group-identity political correctness.

I support the rights of the unborn in every country on Earth, someone, and I oppose candidates who are pro-abortion wherever they may be. This is because I love children of every country and they all deserve the opportunity for life... or at least not to be murdered.

I feel this way for the same reasons decent Americans are outraged over hanging gay teenagers in Iran, beating and oppressing women in Saudi Arabia, and killing, maiming, and raping people in Darfur.

William Wilberforce was a British subject and he is held up as a hero by modern American and worldly pro-life forces and previously as an ally by anti-slavery forces where he made his most important contribution.

I think that is what we are seeing in the poll direction changes. The conservative base wavering back and forth based on whether they think McCain is going to throw Palin under the bus.

SueM,

How do you presume to know what anyone on here has or has not done to help "the cause?"  I have done plenty, and have worked since the primaries doing what I could to not elect Obama.  That meant phone calls, donations, blogging, talking to people about politics that I would've never talked about that with....and most recently, that meant doing those things for a politician, McCain, that I don't really want!!  Why have I done this?  Because I don't want Obama as my president.

It's unfair of you to chastise people here who are frustrated.  God almighty, if you are a true conservative who has had to accept McCain as our nominee, that has meant swallowing a whole lot of shit from our nominee while doing so...climate change, illegal pandering, etc.  And all the while, being pounded relentlessly by the media who lets Obama go scott free with his deception and lies.

When McCain has had the chance to call Obama out, 9 out of 10 times, he has flaked in that challenge.  Perfect opportunities have been missed.  He's down in the polls.  He's all but forgotten his conservative base.  And he's doing all this while I've done my part to help keep Obama out.  McCain is not helping me (or you or anyone else) help him get elected!  Is that too hard for you to understand?  It. Is. Frustrating.  Our party is dying and he is not helping.  He's been handed life preserver after life preserver and he'd rather swim unprotected with the sharks.  Sorry if I can't look through your rose-colored glasses.  Doesn't mean I'll quit fighting for him.  But I'm disappointed.  I see the country that I LOVE crumbling around me.

So with all due respect, now you can shut the fuck up.  Better yet, don't shut the fuck up.  Go make some calls.

QFT.  You are so fucking money.

You need to blog.  Every time I get stupid, you're always there to slap me around and tell me to snap out of it.

Well, let me tell you something, everyone: You all are a bunch of whiny ass fucknut quitters. When things don't go your way, you moan and bitch and complain. My words to you: Shut the fuck up, and start logging calls or walking a beat.

I worked a McCain phone bank once, and will likely again next week.

I can do that AND declare the following:

I am tired of working to elect a candidate who is worse at making his case than are his supporters.

TIRED of it.

I am tired of having to look to columnists, bloggers and pundits – rather than my fucking candidate -- to make a coherent case for voting GOP.

I am tired of having my beliefs labeled “selfish,” “racist” and “simplistic” with no candidate to refute them.

Maybe this really is part of a master plan: Palin attacks and McCain plays it soft. If it works, I will eat my words, gladly.

Absolutely no funding ought to go to majors in "International Studies" and other such StuffWhitePeopleLike bullshit.

Condi Rice was an International Studies major, IIRC from her biography.  It's not the major, it's the student.
