| 4chan Poster Explains Who Hacked Palin's AccountSort of. It's a guy going by the screenname "rubico." I imagine the Feds can figure it out from there. And he says "Anonymous" and 4chan aren't really responsible as groups. In fact, one of them sent a warning to the Palins to change their email passwords. What would be awesome would be to find that this "rubico" is one of Obama's cultists. Inspired by the Obama Action Wire tactics to commit a crime on behalf of his God.Comments1
Dan Riehl had a link to this in the piece you posted overnight. So, I guess, this is old even thought you sort of posted it before you posted it.

Given the prevalence of child porn and assorted repulsive things on 4chan's ever-moving location, I can't work out why the government doesn't have these d00dz on a list to begin with. It was mildly funny when anonymous was attacking Scientology for whatever obscure reason they chose to but the seeds of anarchy and serious privacy and computer fraud were in that already.

I really do think this was an obama staffer or volunteer who got lucky but then realized he was on the hook because he hadn't taken the proper precautions first to cover his tracks. Either he didn't know them or wasn't expecting to be successful. The whole thing comes off as amateurish. Going to 4chan was an attempt to cover his ass and make it seem like a prank rather than a political op.

I take that as a signal not to mention the kid's likely ID. Insane. We have had mothers and teenagers forced to pay, with dubious but arguable reason, huge and disproportionate indemnities to the RIAA for illegal file sharing... but absolutely nothing will happen to the doodz involved in hacking Palin. For no other reason than that if the Justice Department files any charges, the stentorian cyber Left will howl "Fascism! Censorship!" and Bush's administration hasn't the stomach for it.

I heard that in one of the emails "Palin" describes herself as "anti-choice", and I'm pretty sure that it's ontologically imposible (depending on what exactly "ontologically" means) for a person to sincerely self-identify in that way. A person describing themselves as "anti-choice" is a fictional person.

I am a regular poster on 7chan's /b/, and I have to say the facts given to Malkin are right.
1. Anonymous is not really a cohesive unit or group. Most of these "raids" are saged to death or banned. This was just one kid. The scientology people are simply no longer welcome on /b/ and are saged, banned, and ridiculed for being of the utmost fail. However, they continue to call themselves anonymous because they are idiots. 2. 95% *channers are not hackers, only probably 4% are script kiddies and the remaining 1% are skilled enough to do serious damage. The kid in question simply guessed all the "recover password" questions on yahoo correctly. 3. Political threads on /b/ (at least on 7chan) are saged to death, be they right or left leaning. /b/ as a group simply does not care. In fact, it seems that a lot of the older users of /b/ are libertarian leaning, while the 15 y/o newfag population are the commies. Posted by: AndrewGurn at September 18, 2008 03:59 PM (BX9uS) 39
TS9, as people have pointed out we see this guy's email and his Counterstrike chats, a game that come with Half Life, that's has tracking info. Why? Because this idiot couldn't be bothered to crop a screen capture. A screen capture is just like a picture. A real hacker would crop out anything not related to want he wanted to release and would strip the file of any identifying marks of where it was made or came from. "Anonymous" dumped a whole crapload of stuff on the net they hacked from Scientology. If you find anything on those you can bet it's from someone who forwarded it, not the source.
The other complaint the guy makes is he had trouble getting the info from the email into files and then zipping it, that is condensing it into one file. This is just being stupid or lazy. Yahoo has a built in feature to export the contacts as a text file, which it looks like he may have actually done. Getting the emails is easy too. All he would have to do is connect to Yahoo mail with a client like eudora and all the mail gets downloaded. Email client's could then save it as a text archive file. Windows does zipping. The other thing is covering your tracks. The guy used one proxy when he should have used several. A professional would have hacks waiting to be used as proxys and for email and posting stuff. Bouncing the shit over the net so many times it ain't funny. Rubico could be just a dupe here too. If that's true then it's a sure bet everything in that box was grabbed, which is what a real hacker would do. It's like mining for gold. You take everything and pan later, not stand around hoping no one notices you looking for it. In the end whoever it was will get caught if they are in the US, which they probably are or we would never even heard about this. Tracking is a matter of time, money and effort. I don't think those things will be spared here. There are plenty of people shitting bricks on Capitol Hill today thinking about this. Posted by: Rocks at September 18, 2008 04:00 PM (Q1lie) 40

He didnt hack. He guessed. Palins password security was weaker than Obama's resume. Not it wasn't and no he didn't, technically. Yahoos password recovery is weak. He didn't guess the password, he looked up/guessed the information neccessary to get yahoo to email him the password at his own address. Which is how they have his own address. He couldn't log into hers until he had the password. You have to send it to an address you do have access to. If he did sign that up as himself, I don't know what kinda subretard moron gives yahoo accurate personal information in the first place. Posted by: Entropy at September 18, 2008 04:01 PM (m6c4H) 42

Not really. The guy used publicly available information/guessed in order to change the password via Yahoo!'s password recovery system. It asks three questions and then you can change the password. *** As Mesablue says, there's a guy with the same username (rubico10) who has a profile at another site. The website linked from there exposes his real name (I won't repeat it) and he's apparently the son of a Democratic state legislator in Tennessee. Topsecretk9,
RE: Rocks' "A real hacker would have covered his tracks better and would have had no problem with getting everything there and zipping it." This "cracker" (as opposed to a "hacker," and he isn't even that) just performed a manual brute force password exploit with some social engineering (if loosely defined) research to increase the odds of success. The secondary dumping to "Anonymous" was likely an ill-conceived cover-up to disguise his tracks. What I think Rocks was suggesting that a) this was an amateurish, front end GUI entry to a controlled application that doesn't even merit the "script kiddie" tag, and that b) a real cracker would likely have used another method of exploit. The zipping means that the whole collection of emails would have been archived, compressed, and packaged for redistribution as a single file. An expert cracker would have used a backdoor method to access the data and used a different means rather than the Yahoo email GUI. If the email server was known and configured insecurely, an expert could have cracked a vulnerability on the email server holding the target account, raised his user status to superuser or even root (a very serious escalation), and acquired whatever content desired, and then (because of user privileges) deleted his tracks or run a rootkit (collection of tools to gain root or to perform lots of automated tasks) to do it for him. That would have been difficult (perhaps very), but not impossible, to do. Short of that, a front-end exploit for Yahoo's email application could (if it was known) be performed that might circumvent coded controls and allow for account abuse via the proxy chain (of one) the abuser tried to hide behind; however, this person didn't do that. It was simple password guessing and normal email account perusal via web GUI. The account was violated and law broken because of unauthorized access. There was no "hacking" involved. This "kid" acted maliciously in a manner about as sophisticated as granny accessing her email after forgetting, and subsequently remembering, her password. This political operative/black hat is giving crackers a bad name. Posted by: AnonymousDrivel at September 18, 2008 04:25 PM (sI5Ho) 57
I'm just trying to do some explaining. I'm just doing the same. A lot of people think of it as a proper nickname for some sort of 'elite hacker squad'. It is not. Posted by: Entropy at September 18, 2008 04:33 PM (m6c4H) 58
Short of that, a front-end exploit for Yahoo's email application could (if it was known) be performed that might circumvent coded controls and allow for account abuse via the proxy chain (of one) the abuser tried to hide behind; This all strikes me as overly complex. The bastard could have simply just gone to the damn public library. Or connected to a wireless network. Shit all you have to do is drive down the street with a laptop and a wireless card and there's probably 5 people on your block just blasting unsecured internet access out there. Then your neighbor gets arrested for hacking Palin's email and he can't call the cops on you anymore for throwing your unsorted trash in his can or something like that.... Posted by: Entropy at September 18, 2008 04:40 PM (m6c4H) 59

--- Well I guess the AP believe it to be the person pinpointed and as such have decided this was just a prank, despite the person saying he want to find dirt and derail her candidacy. Sigh. Entropy,
Sure, he could use a public node or wardrive, but amateurs in basements are lazy. Plus, remaining incognito is a multidimensional concern. One can remain fixed and hidden and use technology to hide one's tracks. Alternately, one could become a moving target to hide amongst the masses and rely less on technology to "hide" one's virtual persona. Either way has risks and rewards. Going out in public has the potential to expose (either high or low probabilities here) and is inconvenient. In this case, the brute force attack required but ~45 minutes. That is extraordinarily short, even if one uses an automated script to do the work. I doubt this person thought it would be that easy, so sitting at a public terminal for hours trying to access an email account would surely draw undersired attention. There's no law per se against a private citizen gathering evidence; people do things everyday for which they might be held to account. Not that Governor Palin is among them. I’d expect to find nothing incriminating, but the attack on Sarah Palin’s privacy is inexcusable. Citizens do have rights, the right to be secure in their papers among them. In a poorly worded memorandum, the Associated Press informed the Secret Service, “No way dude, are we giving up them emails ‘till we get the moose stew recipe. Like get your own story man, this one’s ours.” Due to the electronic medium, the Palin case should be groundbreaking. For the less technologically inclined: whenever one’s cell phone is switched on, not necessarily making a call, just turned on, even if it's not a GPS enabled device, it emits a signal that anyone who knows your SIM card number may track with an array of inexpensive software.
