Obama: Ha, Ha, McCain Is Old, He Can't Use a Computer
North Vietnamese Captors: Yeah, Ha Ha, We Did That to Him; Pretty Good Gag, Eh?

Prepared to lead.

Not apparently prepared to research an ad, however.

"McCain's severe war injuries prevent him from combing his hair, typing on a keyboard, or tying his shoes."

McCain also can't play basketball very well, Obama. How 'bout you challenge him to a game of one-on-one, too?

This is important:

What you are now seeing is Obama's performance in a crisis challenging situation.

Are you reassured? Are you looking forward to the cool judgment and steady wisdom of President Barack Obama in a true crisis?

Thanks to Brad and others.

Seniors and Disabled Veterans for Barack Obama

You can stand at the back of the photo-op pictures, where no one can see you. And please -- no whining. We get it, you're old. Can you at least pretend to be fabulous for five minutes?

Another Easily Discoverable Article: Forbes. Online.

It actually says the charge isn't even true. Except the part about it being too painful for McCain to type. Due to those funny, funny broken fingers inflicted by the NVA.

In certain ways, McCain was a natural Web candidate. Chairman of the Senate Telecommunications Subcommittee and regarded as the U.S. Senate's savviest technologist, McCain is an inveterate devotee of email. His nightly ritual is to read his email together with his wife, Cindy. The injuries he incurred as a Vietnam POW make it painful for McCain to type. Instead, he dictates responses that his wife types on a laptop. "She's a whiz on the keyboard, and I'm so laborious," McCain admits.

I sorta want to see Obama's grades again.

4 Let's recap:

The Obama camp makes an ad that insults old people, people who are uncomfortable with computers, people that do not have computers, and anyone that doesn't like to see any of those people being ridiculed.

And the target of the ad? Oh, it turns out he can't use a computer because the NVA broke the living hell out of his body while he was a POW.

What a well run campaign.

Proposed McCain commercial:

Barack Obama mocks John McCain for not being able to use a computer keyboard.

John McCain can't use this tool because his arms were broken by his captors while he was defending our country's freedoms.

Really McCain should should voice over the very end and say "My name is John McCain, and your g____mned right, I support this message, too."

Okay, guys. You won’t BELIEVE this.

So, I was outraged enough to call the Obama campaign and tell them about this fact and to fact-check their video.

THE GUY ON THE OTHER LINE TOLD ME IT WASN’T A REAL CAMPAIGN AD.

I called their CAMPAIGN OFFICE and the person answering the phone told me it was NOT one of their ads. That he had NEVER heard of that ad, EVER. And that they NEVER did things like that. He told me he’d pass the information along SO THAT THE CAMPAIGN COULD FORMULATE THEIR RESPONSE AND REBUKE TO THE AD.

I hop off the phone and go over to Obama’s official youtube page– yup, the ad is real, definitely Obama’s! I get back on the phone… Called TEN times actually. They never picked up again. Wonder if they have caller ID. hmmmm?

99 This is really a remarkable new low for the false prophet of change and a higher politics, made all the more worthy of highlighting by the likely fact that it wasn't so much the product of a cruel intention so much as an obvious lack of thought.  A lack of thought so striking that it almost causes decent people to avert their eyes and surely marks him as unfit for the office he seeks.  Vote for the senior, not the sophomore!  BARACK OBAMA:  NOT READY TO LEAD.

108 I agree the ad stunk, but so did your excuse for McCain and his inability to comb his hair. use a computer, or tie his shoes. The first video shows John saluting right after being released from the Hanoi Hilton. If you can salute you can comb your hair, especially since its been short his whole life. The second video shows him shaking hands, which he did nothing but shake hands throughout the campaign. Definitely hard to argue tired old bones when you shake a thousand hands a day. Your third statement may be true for all I know, but I do know that he regularly wears Ferragamo slip- ons. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EUh_Aan4lf0 http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-4booZ3CABo If you want to defend thats great, but at least get better excuses.

Ummmm...  saluting doesn't involve, you know, fingers and all. Or, like, holding anything.

Try this, real floozy. Try holding your hand like in a salute, and then picking up a comb. Or maybe tieing your shoes with your hand like a paddle. Or maybe try typing by slapping the keyboard with those hand-paddles.

Yeah, got that figured out now?

Hand. Fingers. Hand. Fingers.

At least you've come up with a new angle for an Obama attack ad: "McCain: Not really quite as crippled as you may have been lead to believe, but still pretty crippled after all."

121 mrbubbs: I sure do hope they double-down on this one. His injuries prevent him from typing -- his wife has to do it for him. "Yeah -- let's challenge that shit! I saw him move his right index finger once! He's a liar!"

Two scenarios if the left double down on this:

1. It turns out to be true that McCain can't type because of injuries. Obama looks like a complete incompetent asshole.

2. McCain can function on a keyboard somewhat, people examine that he is actually technically savvy for his age and then they realize that presidents don't email. Obama still looks like an idiot for letting the issue even come up.  Then when he defends himself ("Enough! I'm taking my gloves off this time!") and looks even worse.

Obama just got himself into a heap of trouble.

Real Doozy

I broke my wrist in 1994 falling on a snow slicked walkway responding to an intrusion alarm at a nuclear power plant. Due to the physical requirements of my job it took a lot longer to be cleared to return to work. I had to be able to prove I was more than 100% healed.

Today that one simple injury causes me, from time to time, severe pain, and I am at best middle aged.

I did not have both of my arms, and my hands, and my fingers repeatedly broken and smashed, and allowed to partially heal without proper care or rehab, and then smashed again.

My injuries have not had 40 years to stiffen and sieze and develop arthritis. Watch the man when he shakes hands. It is not a smooth action. His hand does not meet the others at a natural angle, and it is clear that it is painful.

125 The alleged quote that McCain admits that he "doesn't understand the economy" is actually dishonest, given his actual quote that "I understand the fundamentals" but that he doesn't understand the economy "as well as I should," and would want someone who would compensate that weakness. Saying I don't spend as much time with my wife as I should is just not the same as saying I don't spend time with my wife.
It's always creepy to cut off words in a sentence, as those extra words so often provide context. Also, a little aside, the ad says the quote came from the Boston Globe, when it sure looks like it came from the Baltimore Sun.

Posted by: weffie at September 13, 2008 01:15 AM (qY9wt)

126 Jeez, I don't get you people. Before this discussion was diverted by sheer stupidity, I said that the argument is weak, and gave evidence to the contrary. Ok you win. Lets go with yours! McCain is an arthritic broken down old man that can do little without help. Needs help shampooing his hair, combing it, tying his shoes, and dressing himself. Can't reach for a coffee cup high in the cabinet, can't kneel in church, or make love to his wife unless she's on top. Is that the message you're trying to put out? Do you think this is the stuff McCain wants to hear? Give the man some respect, he's a hero who wears 28 medals for a reason. All you people are doing is running him into the ground.

129 Ah, the Hawking defense. Yes, if Stephen Hawking can do it, for cripe's sake, John McCain could do it.

Faced by the fact of McCain's physical inability, the left says he should have learned an alternative input technology. Because he needs to do that much computer work. And why is it relevant in any way? Because if he can't use an e-mail program, he's obviously not qualified to make IT policy. Really? In reason, we call that a non sequitur.

Then, with it demonstrated that McCain is doing a bit of self-deprecating exaggeration about his computer illiteracy---because, it turns out, he does use a computer and do email with his wife handling the keyboard, and he is knowledgeable about the internet even if he doesn't assistive technology to use it (they want him to use his eyeglasses, so they can say he's too physically limited to be president--they think they can win either way)---then, with their whole basis for the ad shot to hell, they resort to a pure resort to age. "He's too old even if he can get his wife to do the surfing and email."

So McCain can't use a PC.  Can Obama fly a fighter jet?

Who exactly is the more technically advanced here?  Is knowing how to play Solitaire on your PC the technical equivalent of managing electromagnetic countermeasures to jam North Vietnamese surface-to-air missiles as you're flying a pop-up attack at 400 knots?  Is Obama flying his Excel program off a carrier deck?  How many people have died because they made a minor mistake in Word?  It is rather obvious to the casual observer that flying fighters is more technically demanding than flying PowerPoint.

The fact is that Obama is pointing out his own technical illiteracy with this ad and his general incompetence in the contest of ideas.  If this is how Obama manages his campaign at 3 PM, I'd hate to see how he manages a crisis as president when the phone rings at 3 AM.

Exactly what would a President of the US need for email?  You don't conduct official business at that level with email. If anything, it proves how the donks have no idea what the job entails.

Also, e-mail is FOIA-able.  If it ain't on paper or it's electronic from, FOIA requests are fairly useless.

136 Well, Obama does not seem to be doing too well in the email performance either. Does he forget so readily that his 'text message' of his vice presidential nominee on a given date at a definite time to all those who provided their email addresses to him did not go off exactly as planned? In fact, the news of Sen Biden reached the media prior to many emails/texting reached the signer uppers. Also, those who signed up found that their emails were being used for many other reasons. See link.
http://dynamiccopywriting.blogspot.com/2008/08/obamas-email-list.html

Also, email is not considered a secure way to communicate...so in other words...don't be passing any government secrets around.

What a great way for a president to maintain the integrity of his country's secrets, his strategy or whatever. (note sarcasm here)

The idea that using a cell phone (holding a Blackberry up to his ear) proves McCain can use a computer keyboard is just plain idiotic. Look at the pic Cole offers.
