| For the Democrats, It's Mo Palin, Mo ProblemsWhat’s going to happen when Charlie Gibson asks Palin how she feels about amnesty and she looks in the camera and starts mouthing the old, stomach-churning Maverick-ian platitudes about what it means to be a “true friend” to Hispanics? Second look at Fred!I think that is 60% likely. But there's a 40% chance that McCain/Palin will choose instead to simply win the election right now. We all know that Veeps change their positions to accord with the top of the ticket. But Sarah Palin is supposed to be a straight-talking maverick, headstrong, and not afraid of conflict. Furthermore, there is an especial danger with Palin merely aping every John McCain talking point -- the MSM and left are pushing the notion she's a brainless beauty queen without any real mental firepower. Other Veeps don't have to fear that, or at least not as much, because they're men and the media is usually not pushing the idea that a woman is unfit to be vice president. (But see George Bush the Elder and the "wimp factor" attributed to him.) How to push the maverick idea and dispel the well-coached parrot idea? Sarah Palin could -- if McCain and Palin wish to win this election right now -- say that while she will support her senior officer, she is personally skeptical of a mass-amensty until not only are the borders secured, but in fact really secured, such that illegal immigration does not merely stabilize but in fact falls by one half or more. Only then can we even begin contemplating an amensty. Her beliefs will not change McCain's, alas. But for the 70% of the public opposed to (or very reserved about) amnesty, she'd be the only person on either ticket expressing their policy preferences. So, McCain: You haven't played it safe very often and so far your reckless disregard of conventional thinking has not only secured you the nomination, but the status of front runner. Care to play it unsafe and unconventional one more time and score a fourth-round knockout? How's the idea of instantly adding 3% to your national support grab you? Comments1
THis may all hinge on what Billy Jeff and Becky talked about over breakfast today.

On the other hand, coming out in support of a position favored by 70% of the American people doesn't exactly strike me as "daring" and "unconventional". Posted by: OregonMuse at September 11, 2008 04:27 PM (FO+YO) 3
I'm surprised you put this forward as a suggestion, like it's another Hail Mary play. I just took it as given that this was exactly how they were going to play it. Hm. Posted by: spongeworthy at September 11, 2008 04:27 PM (a00go) Posted by: Cerebral Paul Z. at September 11, 2008 04:29 PM (BOQRp) 5
Did anyone see this live on CNN last night? David Gergen was about to wretch at the concept "she's just the VP nomination" and "McCain is the candidate and we're watching this live?!"
It was shock and awe. Posted by: Vern at September 11, 2008 04:29 PM (ijVRQ) 6
And once again, the solid point is made that McCain doesn't need as much money as Obama to win. Why?
Most of his best advisors -- when he listens to them -- are volunteers. Posted by: leoncaruthers at September 11, 2008 04:31 PM (SHR5S) 7
The Wall Street Journal editorial board is correct: when has a tough stance on immigration ever won an election? It failed in the 19th century, and it failed this time - otherwise, Tancredo would be the Republican nominee...
Besides, a 3% grab is theoretical, but the risk of angering a good number of Hispanic voters (who may be key supporters in a few states, as they were for Pres. Bush in 2004) is real: many of them certainly deplore mass-citizenship for illegal immigrants, but they often feel that certain immigration positions are anti-Hispanic (fairly or not, it is how many feel). I do like to listen to her speak. Would be nice if they could come up with some new phrases and not keep using the ones from her convention speech. She's starting to get so much play that they are getting used up.

oy - when has a 72 year old pilot ever won an election? Guess we better give up entirely.
Or, we could put the wishes of 70% of the country above the delusional persecution fantasies of a small fraction of the electorate that's going to vote against us anyway. Posted by: bgates at September 11, 2008 04:52 PM (CFjXn) 13

Sounds like McCain is consolidating his advantage in the polls. Palin made a major speech without a mention of, much less a punch at, Obama/Biden. It was positive and affirming.
Let's contrast that with the nasty attacks that Barry is throwing out there, looking tired and disheveled. You can always tell whose numbers show they are behind. Posted by: Bender Bending Rodriguez at September 11, 2008 04:58 PM (meHbF) 15
My Palinmania is on hold until I get a clear statement from her about illegal immigration. She's saying the right things about the war, and her foreign policy ideas don't seem to be based in fairyland. But frankly, illegal immigration, to me, is my single issue for the election, as it's part and parcel of our national security along with the GWOT. It'd be wonderful if she said the right stuff, and even better if she meant it, too.

The left is clinging bitterly to the idea that Sarah is hiding and unwilling to answer questions. Yesterday I countered such a claim on another message board by pointing out that she was meeting for two days with Charlie Gibson of ABC News, that he was being given unfettered access to her and that nothing was going to be off the table. The response from the leftys? Derisive laughter, of course, and assertions that I'm a fool to believe that. They're implacable. Bunch of dummies. Posted by: Kensington at September 11, 2008 05:01 PM (kFwRi) 18
Okay, so I don't sound too crankish: when I say illegal immigration is my single issue, I mean national security is my single issue for this election, and illegal immigration is a part of that. Just to be clear.

You know, I just watched that 15 minute 'glad to be back, Alaska' speech you got posted, and the only line I recognized from the stump speech was the one about using 'change for a career, instead of a career for change' one. The rest was fresh material. And she is a damn good public speaker off the cuff. Per amnesty, just for the record immigration isn't one of my big big issues, I'd just say that as long as she doesn't sound coached, she'll be fine. It's not like Alaska has to deal with it like Texas or Cali or Arizona does. But if she is to the right of McCain on immigration thats like putting awesome-icing on an already awesome-cake. Posted by: Lee at September 11, 2008 05:05 PM (AFE7Q) 21
The question is, how many Hispanics do they lose as opposed to conservative/anti-amnesty/secure border supporters gained.
What's the cost/benefit ratio? Me personally? Yeah, f**k 'em and go with SECURE BORDERS FIRST - TALK ABOUT AMNESTY LATER (much, much, much later-- as in never). Posted by: J.J. Sefton at September 11, 2008 05:06 PM (zpaDL) Posted by: Mike at September 11, 2008 05:09 PM (jg+Fr) 23
Since McCain is the one deciding policy I don't think it would hurt McCain's support in the Hispanic community too much if Sarah Palin did come out in favour of a border fence. She would garner some independents and conservative Democrats support as a benefit.
If she did that she should make a virtue of the disagreement by pointing out that Republicans are allowed to disagree with each other. Posted by: Travis at September 11, 2008 05:11 PM (/XCyf) 24
Hasn't McCain already said that he has seen the light on this and wants to close the borders first? I believe that most naturalized hardworking Hispanics want the border closed also.
Posted by: cv at September 11, 2008 05:15 PM (GmamD) 25
I agree with Travis; let's get back to a back and forth within a "team."

"Second look at Fred?"
That zoned me out into a daydream of a Fred Thompson / Sarah Palin ticket. When I came out of it, I found that I had leaked enough pre-cum to float a guided missle frigate. Posted by: Empire of Jeff at September 11, 2008 05:16 PM (bu0Ek) 27
I agree with Brad's agreement of Travis's support for open honest disagreement within the overall framework of conservative government, or basically, Palin and McCain should just say "splunge" on immigration.
Posted by: Potosi Joel at September 11, 2008 05:20 PM (TPRbZ) Posted by: Purple Avenger at September 11, 2008 05:42 PM (6L459) 29
I think she should have a little room to roam, we really don't know what her position is and traditionally Alaska's problems on this front were somewhat, uh, different from those in the lowermost of the Lower 48, but since one of the strengths of the McCain/Palin ticket is supposed to be philosophical consistency, let's not have her go stomping off the range, down the freeway, and into the path of oncoming GOP semis like ol' Biden's making a habit of.
A lot of us are voting for McCain this time around 'cause we think four years is about the right time to polish her credentials for the Presidency, so any policy on blanket amnesty, global warming, etc. that looks like a reasonable sort of first-term stiff-arm is going to reassure a lot of us. Posted by: mrkwong at September 11, 2008 05:43 PM (G8Eo0) 30
My first impression of this idea was "hell yes". But after pondering it for a moment I'm not so sure. I do think that Palin has to disagree with McCain on something big. They can't both agree on everything and both be Mavericks, after all. However pissing off the Messicans with an immigration/border control disagreement may not be the right thing to do with some of the western states so close. And, by the way, where does the 3% come from? Is it reliable? Perhaps drilling in ANWR is a better disagreement to have. Just a thought. Or, on the other hand, they coulld toss caution to the wind and tomorrow Palin could hit immigration/border control and ANWR drilling like they owe her money and watch Keefe and Chrissy meet their final apoplectic end while Howard Fineman puts the finishing touches on his MSNBC Anchor resume. I agree with Cautious that illegal immigration is a key component of the big issues: Nat'l security and GWOT. Going forward, it's also the biggest issue on the Domestic Econ front. -------It is total pile of Schumer to bellow about reforming gov't , health care, and wasteful spending when so much of that is tied into human trafficking, illegal labor+ drugs+guns+badass criminals imported from our ''friends''. AND--------It's batshit insane to reward the 20 or 30 million democrats in waiting, and let them import 20 or 30 million more of their socialist relatives each year. .....Liar John pandered to Conservs with promises of building ''their goddam fence,'' all retracted :::: during his command performance to kneel and suck La Raza's collective Richard Clarke. McCreep expects to baffle and bedazzle the moron conservative base by tossing out Sarah Palin -----like she's a chunk of red meat or something--------certified not to contain any immigration policy beyond sanctuary cities. I don't want Gov Palin slandered or abused, but there's no evidence yet that she will cure Mac's crapweasel agenda to destroy conservatives.......and guess what. All the Hispanics I know are legal and conservative and oppose abuse of the law.

Constitutionally, there's precious little she could do unless something came down to casting a tie-breaker vote in the senate. Posted by: Purple Avenger at September 11, 2008 10:27 PM (6L459) 34
This is the number one reason I'm worried about Palin. The chances of her having a strong position as Governor of Alaska, enough so to sway the influence of McCain and the advisers that are coaching her are long indeed. She's probably going to be a huge disappointment on that vital issue (domestic and security). The question is whether Conservatives take it in stride and blow off the issue or have buyer's remorse (particularly after swallowing the nascent personality cult). I don't know which would be worse.

Sorry, but all you Hispandering fools just don't get it--2 out of 3 of them will vote Demunist anyway and always have! If you really bend over and grab the ankles, you can get 40%--wow wow whee! While alienating everyone else. (The bogus 44% counts Cubans and Puerto Ricans, who are not motivated by the illegal aliens issue, and who are dwarfed by Mexicans in numbers). You CAN'T win a pandering contest with Demunists. Meanwhile, blue collar white Democrats--the ones who Obama calls clingy and bitter--would turn out in droves to vote for no more illegal aliens. The CA Republican Party was wrecked by Hispandering delusions. The Wall Street Journal editorial board is deluded with visions of cheap gardeners and maids, and they have been wrong and wrong again, Ask them about Chris Cannon.
