If "Lipstick on a Pig" is Such an Obscure Connection That It Never Occurred to Obama, How Come Bob Beckel Was Debuting the Joke Just a Few Days Ago?

Sneak preview!

Beckel: I thought she said the difference between a hockey mom and a Rottweiler -- or maybe it was a pig? -- was lipstick, right?

Surely Uhhhbama is too scary-brilliant to come up with his own applause lines, I suppose.

Then again, he's taking talking points now from Keef Olberrmann. Might be too much work for too little payoff (that's why I'm not doing it), but I bet a google search would find that the "pig/lipstick" line was written hundreds of times by leftwing columnists, bloggers, and "diarists" before Uhhhbama said it.

Thanks to... forget who.

It's Old: JiminJersey--

In his statement Obama also said "You can wrap and OLD fish in newspaper called change. It's still going to stink after 8 years. I agree. Everyone is ignoring the "old fish" line. Obama added the "old" which is obviously a direct reference to McCain which makes the "pig in lipstick" Palin.

It's on the basis of this that I don't give Uhhbama the benefit of the doubt. This was calculated.

The thing is, he did it with enough plausible deniability that I feel a little silly bushing the point (and, frankly, I think the McCain camp looks silly pushing it).

Yes, he almost certainly intended it. But, like his flip-off of Hillary, he did it cannily enough that he can claim, sorta plausibly, that he meant no offense; he's just an idiot.

Don't You Know That It's Different For Girls? Obama's pretty darn-tootin' mad about all these silly "misogynist" charges. Why can't we all just stop dwelling on innocent words, he wants to know.

You know what's not silly? Claiming every damn thing your opponents say is "stelath racist messaging," that's what.

I wish these guys played poker, with tells like these you could make a fortune.

5 It would seem that the section of the attack just prior to the lipstick comment was completely scripted - and swiped from a Tom Toles political cartoon no less.

Listen to the audio again, and you can hear Obama stepping on the setup, and having to backtrack to set the attack line up again.

6 Beckel was the guy who had hookers service him in his home, including giving him a blow job in his driveway while his wife and children were home (they leave that little factaoid out of his online bio of the incident), and paid the ho with personal checks leading him to be blackmailed. How's that for judgment!

I friggen' hate Beckel. Somebody should tell him to either loose some weight or get shirts with bigger collar sizes. Jeez... what a dope.

I watch Fox in the morning while getting ready for the day. I saw him say this but did not tie it up to Obama's crud yesterday. You all KNOW that there was going to be quite a bit of "lipstick" comments after Palin's speech last week. I just thought it would be more... subtle and sarcastic. Instead, it was awkward.

This whole thing reminds me of some G.K. Chesterton:

"It is terrible to contemplete how few politicians are hanged." - The Cleveland Press, 3/1/1921

"It is the mark of our whole modern history that the masses are kept quiet with a fight. They are kept quiet by the fight because it is a sham-fight; thus most of us know by this time that the Party System has been popular only in the sense that a football match is popular." - A Short History of England. p.156

"It is a good sign in a nation when things are done badly. It shows that all the people are doing them. And it is bad sign in a nation when such things are done very well, for it shows that only a few experts and eccentrics are doing them, and that the nation is merely looking on." - "Patriotism and Sport," All Things Considered

"The whole modern world has divided itself into Conservatives and Progressives. The business of Progressives is to go on making mistakes. The business of the Conservatives is to prevent the mistakes from being corrected." - ILN, 4/19/1924

"Women are the only realists; their whole object in life is to pit their realism against the extravagant, excessive, and occasionally drunken idealism of men." - A Handful of Authors

"Women have a thirst for order and beauty as for something physical; there is a strange female power of hating ugliness and waste as good men can only hate sin and bad men virtue." - Chesterton on Dickens

16 There was another Democrat on Fox and Friends either yesterday or the day before that used the same line and got blasted by Steve Doocey. This was clearly a talking point that failed everytime it's been tried. Not sure if the guy was with the campaign or not and I didn't catch the name, but I heard on XM as I was driving to work. Right around 7:45am, if anyone has the ability to find this video.

One other thing...

What if while referring to Obama hypocrisy McCain uttered the words "now that is the pot calling the kettle black". Would everyone be so quick to brush it aside? Saying McCain was talking about Obama's hypocrisy? Or that McCain misspoke? No. he would be labeled a racist. Charlie, Katie and the gang would be foaming at the mouth calling him an out of touch racist old coot. Everyone would be demanding that he remove himself from the race.

So why is it okay to be a misogynist but not a racist? Why are they not in the same league. Aren't they both protected classes?

33 Althouse brought up the fish line too--she immediately recognized "fish smell" as being a very poor angle of attack on a woman.

The more I think about it, the more I think that the fund raising thing is most of what's bugging Obama.

If they hit only half their August target, they really are in trouble on the home stretch. The individual caps mean that he needs to find new donors, which works well when you have good momentum, but is tough when you have negative momentum.

His burn rate is so high (no drug jokes here, folks) that he needs huge cash-flow just to avoid layoffs. Those TV and radio ads come entirely off the top, so he will have a much, much smaller budget than he wanted.

He is exhausted, confused, broke. It's no wonder he is stuttering and gaffing so often. I would feel sorry for him if the fate of the free world wasn't at stake.

38 The thing that gets me about Obama is that he plays to people's base natures .... flipping off Hillary, likening Palin to a pig. And the reactions by his supporters show they know what he is doing ... they hoot and holler and eat it up.

BUT, he is using people's good natures to get away with it ... we grant him the plausible deniability that he asks for because that is what good people do.

It's possible. For me the whole 'lipstick on a pig' thing is at best a minor gaffe, but several women I've talked to are really outraged by it. So it may be a male/female thing. Right now Obama is in a negative PR cycle. A few more gaffes and Drudge headlines and he'll be permanently damaged.

that he meant no offense; he's just an idiot.

So let's look at Obama's options. He's either a passive aggressive sexist who had full knowledge of the double meaning his statement had and went with it anyways probably hoping for the meaning to be caught by his supporters. Or He's a complete buffoon who had no clue that what he was saying would be taken as an insult directed at Palin.

Sexist or Idiot. Gee he sure gave himself a lot of room to work there.

And with everything going on is anyone thinking that perhaps they have decided to keep Palin repeating the same things continuously because they have witnessed the reaction its caused. Not in the fans but in the media. "She just keeps saying the same thing never different." Keep that going long enouhg until they're spinning circles and then let her unleash again just like with her speech at the convention. I mean could they have just set themselves up for another blindsiding by her?

It seems the entire "Lipstick on a Pig" story may have been, at least in part, a diversion to take interest away from the the discovery by the NYT that Obama worked on the Chicago Annenberg Challenge.

The piece is considered “unusually deceptive” and an excellent example of “propaganda” by those familiar with his efforts there, but it could simply be that the writer, Sam Dillon, is primarily a writer about education and unfamiliar with the political implications of the story.

Unexplored was why Obama seems to have left out this job from his resume. Considering Obama has been taking a pummeling for not having any executive experience, this would be an excellent comeback for Obama to all those complaints by McCain and Palin.

54 Stolen from a DKos diary but something to make you go hmmm. Take Begalia's words and substitute Obama for McCain. Do you think there would be outrage from the left? The exchange occurred on CNN over the bridge to nowhere.

ROBERTS: That would appear, Paul, to end any argument over whether or not she supported the bridge initially. But why can't Barack Obama make that point stick?

BEGALA: Because the press won't do its job, John. I criticized Barack Obama when he hasn't been tough enough. Barack's job is to run against John McCain, right. Don't shoot the monkey when you can shoot for the organ grinder. His job is not to focus on number two but number one.

Hell, the line didn't even play that well in front of the audience he was speaking to. There was a smattering of clapping and laughter, but I thought I heard just as much "Oooooo", like they recognized that it was a clear insult to Palin.

YouTube has removed a webad that casts Sarah Palin as the victim of sexism on the request of CBS, whose anchor Katie Couric was featured in the ad.

“One of the great lessons of that campaign is the continued and accepted role of sexism in American life," Couric is quoted in the ad.

Asked about the ad, CBS spokeswoman Leigh Farris said, "CBS News does not endorse any candidate in the Presidential race. Any use of CBS personnel in political advertising that suggests the contrary is misleading."

57 As for women being outraged by the pig comment, but men not getting why it's so bad, let me enlighten you:

In chick-speak, a pig is the second worst thing you can call a woman. Every woman I know would prefer being called a bitch to being called a pig

Calling someone a bitch could be interpreted to mean that she's just a tough cookie.

Calling someone a pig means that she's busting out of her Wal-Mart poly-blend sweatpants, has five months of black roots showing since her last cheap bleach job and Cheeto dust coating her grubby fingers.

It's really, really bad.

74 Sorry, Seattle; a double standard applies here. One guy used some colorful terms to describe certain persons of Asian persuasion while running for president 8 years ago; we expect that (and worse) from him. The other guy is "articulate" and all that and a bag of chips, and he swore that he wouldn't stoop to our level. As good doesn't cut it when you claim to be better.
